Time and operational tempo

Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend.

- Theophrastus -

It's not often one is handed time; it moves in one direction only, forwards, and never comes back. Eventually it's gone forever and I suppose that's why our friend Theophrastus calls it the most valuable thing we spend. I agree.

I was handed time yesterday though, a good deal of it, and I've been making use of the unexpected boon.

I was supposed to return to work today after enjoying a small break starting Friday 24th and was happy with the five days off. I wouldn't have minded having the whole week off between the 24th and 3rd January but I'd content myself with five. I just like that time between Christmas and the new year, usually very hot weather here, to really wind down. Considering I got a hammock for Christmas I could have used that time well. Alas, it was not to be.

And if you believe that you're bonkers!

Ok, so it's true, I was supposed to return to work today, but I got an email asking me to take the rest of the week off pending review which I should know about by Friday 31st. I made a call and yep, I'm off. No, I didn't do anything wrong...But the Covid-19 situation is going bonkers here so the company is trying to split the workforce into two groups. Moving forward the idea is that one team are there when the other are not, supposedly to minimise risk and keep the company operational.

I was asked to take annual leave but considering I have only been there six weeks I only have two days worth so it would mean the loss of a day's pay. I have since heard they will pay me which is kind of nice.

So anyway, that means my operational tempo is, well it's super slow.

Today was hot here, 37°C, so I didn't do much although spent an hour cleaning my BBQ after using it yesterday and watered my garden for another hour. From there I was crypto-trading, chatting and I wrote a big fiction post which was pretty enjoyable. Other than that, I sipped cool drinks, relaxed and made the most of the additional and unexpected time I had been given.

I'm really quite pleased to have this time off and will probably use it to finish off a Lego Technic set I've been too busy to finish. I know, it sounds dumb but finding six straight hours is hard for me as I've so many things I have to make happen. But, I think I'm make the Lego happen in the next day or two. I'll do some reading and maybe be a post or two as well. Thursday is going to be 38°C so I'll not be going out much...It's so good I'll not have to be at work!

Anyway, I'll be around so, if you want to, drop me a comment below and tell me what you're doing and if you have some time off as well. I'd love to hear from you and about what you're up to if you care to share it.

I hope y'all are well...so better get back to relaxing, writing this raised my operational tempo to alarmingly high levels. 😉

I was extremely fortunate that I have a long weekend every other week(perks of working 12 hour days) and was even more blessed that it fell so perfectly on the Christmas holiday weekend this year. It made if feel more of having vacation days than just my regular days off.

I usually avoid taking extra time off during Christmas so that one or two of the guy who work for me and have small children can put in for the time off. I try to use extra time during the Thanksgiving break as my wife, a teacher, is off the entire week and then I take extra time several times during her summer break.

There is no better gift from a boss than paid time off and I certainly hope you are able to enjoy it to its fullest!

I never used to like taking this time off as it's too hot and busy around the place but over the last 5 years got used to it. I was disappointed I wasn't getting it and then...Boom, the universe provided. 😊

I am a little thankful that people are too busy to notice that I have been too busy to be around much. Thankful for small favors.

I feel like a heel having so much time off right now, but, grateful as I need it.

I am reorganizing life right now. :) I feel just a tad out of sorts with being so behind in everything, but, this too shall pass. I am so happy for you to be getting a little bit of time off. What is up with that? You are a diehard workaholic! Stop this. :) Actually, it looks good on you, so much more relaxed !

Post that lego project when you get it together!

Hi, Galen! I hope you had a Merry Christmas and New Year is on the agenda!

You think it hasn't been noticed you're not around Swigs?

Well actually what I really meant was I haven't been commenting that much because I was so behind commenting on my own post but I never did get around. Well, very little anyway. How many people thought that I quit them raise their hand!?

I'm actually okay with it but just a little bit bad because this is the time when you would like to let everybody know how much they mean to you and I have been just too busy to put that out.

Anyway, I am glad you're getting some good time up and that you are giving that hammock a breaking in.

Do what you can, when you can. That's all you can ask of yourself, and yourself is all that matters.

Most of my company left, which of course I would never trade anything for. That time special being they all stay here it makes my alone top 90 per cent. That's okay and I we went wake you up anytime I have for family. They will be here for the long run.

Glad you got a short break Galen:)
So, you watered your garden for an hour?! That must be quite a large nursery or farm that you have going on there. I miss doing stuff like that, not so much cleaning a bbq grill though.
Chilling in a hammock!😎 Lucky you! The joys of summertime, with the awesome invention, called a hammock.
My mom has a big garden that she tends to daily and I have about three hammocks that I hope to set-up in my backyard next time I go back to Jamaica.
Eight years ago when I visited Jamaica, I was shocked out my wits to discover that a basic hammock was being sold for 100 - 150 USD. A vendor told me she could give me a discount for US$70. I declined that offer and just kept on dreaming!
Enjoy your days off:)

No one likes claning the grill...I like mine spotless though and so I get messy to make it happen. Now...It's spotless. I'm a happy chap.

The garden...Well, watering is fun so I take my time. I also don't like to waste water so I'm careful and that takes a little extra time. It's a nice time to think and contemplate though, and I enjoy it.

That's a lot for a hammock. I think the one Santa brought me was half of that. It'll do the job for a while and if the actually hammock part wears out a new on can be bought - it's one of those ones that goes on a free standing frame. Kind of cool.

I'll be in it later.

Yeah, you strike me as one who likes his grill spotless:)

I think I look like a money tree to Jamaican vendors, so they always try to rip me off, and then get surprised when I walk away. I'm no good at haggling; The price is either good or not.

That free standing hammock is a nice idea.
I could consider making a macrame hammock next time I go home. You've given me a great idea there:)

I'm the spotless grill guy for sure. Sometimes being this way is a curse, other times, well I think I'm ok. Sometimes.

I reckon those Jamaican vendors would run in fear of you unleashed. Might be worth a go.

could consider making a macramé hammock next time I go home

You know I'm going to want one.

Haha! Yes, the Jamaicans know to run because they are the only ones who comprehend my exhaustive vocabulary of curse words, and inventive ones I come up with when mad!😆

I'd be sure to make a hammock, especially for you!

Yay for my hammock!

🤞that's a promise!

Ahhhh. I keep my grill clean but not spotless. I actually like the smoke from the little bits that fall through the grate. I have a wood grill tool that I use every time before and after I use the grill. The cooking surface is perfect. The rest provides flavor.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Haha, I know people that rarely clean their grill swearing that it adds flavour. I get it too. I'm just one I'd those who needs to have a clean grill, despite how bloody messy and annoying it is to clean. 🙄

Yay for unexpected time off, unlike some people sounds like you know exactly what to do with it XD

Yep, I'm making the most of it. Finally finished that Lego Volvo A60H. Post pending. It works too, all the remote control features. Yay!

Oh nice! Yay :D

Yeah, I'm relieved. 😀
