Travel with me #74 : A visit to Dolphin Cay to interact with Sea Lions!

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemit Friends :

During my stay in Atlantis, I had the pleasure of visiting their very own Dolphin rescue-rehabilitation facility which happens to be one of the largest in the world. Named Dolphin Cay, the main mammals who live here are of course Dolphins, who have access to around 14-acres and 6.6 million gallons of crystal clear seawater.

Most of the dolphins at Dolphin Cay were relocated from the Marine Life Oceanarium, Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Since then, they have had a very successful breeding program with 16 new dolphin births since 2007.

As you can see from the Map, the Dolphin Cay is just a few minutes walk from the Royal Towers but because of it's popularity, booking an experience is advisable several days in advance.

Aside from swimming with the dolphins, you can also have experiences with Sea Lions and Stingrays.

Although the Dolphins tend to steal the show here, I opted for the lesser known Sea Lions Interaction experience. Many reviews have cited the Sea Lion interaction as being the best out of the three.

I've always had a weak spot for Sea Lions, mostly because they look like the cats of the sea. You know how much I like cats right?

The whole resort is well connected either through in door walk ways, or these sun shaded paths.

On the way to Dolphin Cay, I saw these newts just hanging out in the sun. The size of them on the screen is roughly the actual size of these tiny reptiles!

My slot was for just after lunch. By that time, the sun was already shining fiercely, just a few moments in the sun and I could feel the immense heat.

This is the main booking area. If you've already booked, then it is also the place you report to at least 15 minutes before your allocated slot.

Hanging on the ceiling, they have four very appropriate life size Dolphins for decoration.

After checking in, the staff takes us to this waiting area where the rest of the group will gather.
On the way there, you can see this private beach area which is only available to people who have booked an experience.

On the wall, there is some key information about the Dolphins. Strangely, there is no information about Sea Lions!

You are provided with a free locker to store all your belongings. No jewellery or electronic equipment is allowed.

We're also required to wear a wet suit and floating vest.

After putting the wet suit on, I'm feeling more and more like a professional trainer!

Emotions are sky high!

The Sea Lions

The group that I was in had 12 people. All very keen to meet and greet the Sea Lions. Before doing so, we were taken on a tour of their facilities.

At Dolphin Cay, they have around 90 specialist veterinarians / trainers and support staff all helping to ensure the safety, health and comfort of the animals here at all times.

I wasn't allowed to have pictures taken of the laboratory, but the trainer told us about the work they do each day to make sure their sea lions stay healthy. Frequent samples of their urine and faeces are examined to ensure they're diet is good. Another issue they pointed out was that Sea Lions have a tendency to get Cataracts as they age. This means that their vision becomes degraded if nothing is done about it.

Thankfully, their specialist veterinarians are able to give all Sea Lions who develop Cataracts the necessary surgery to save their vision.

IMG_9677.jpg

Finally, we get to meat the Sea Lion! At first we were told to sit by the pool and the Sea Lion called Carnella would swim over and let us stroke her on the back.

One important rule was not to touch the Sea Lion's head. They can react quite violently if you do.

IMG_9678.jpg

After introducing us to Carnella, she was much more relaxed and ready for us to interact with her a little more.

The trainer called us up one by one to greet Carnella. I was a little scared at first because Carnella is quite a big girl! She weighs over 300lbs!

IMG_9672.jpg

Soon enough we became good friends, and she even stood up to have a photo. Isn't she so tall!

IMG_9671.jpg

Pose and smile for the camera!

She's so cute! She even stuck her tongue out!

The last part of the interaction, we were welcomed into the deeper part of the pool where we were introduced to another Sea Lion from North America.

The trainer told us that when they train the Sea Lions, they like to use positive reinforcement in the form of little treats each time they attempt to perform a trick.

I was given the opportunity feed a sea lion a fish for being so friendly with me!

Did you know, that Sea Lions can eat 10% of their body weight in fish every single day!?

Lastly, we were given the chance to swim with the Sea Lion in the deep end!

And that wraps up my Sea Lion experience at Dolphin Cay, Atlantis, Bahamas!
I must say, it was a very enriching experience. Not only did I have the pleasure of meeting, and playing with two gorgeous Sea Lions, I also learned a lot of interesting things about them I never knew before!

Lots of people say Sea Lions are like the dogs of the sea, but I disagree! They are called Sea lions for a reason!

As always, I really appreciate your up-vote if you liked my post, a follow if you wish to stay up to date with my activities, and a comment to let me know what you think!

Hi @sweetssj. Upvoted and followed you. I love this post about the adorable sea lions - and indeed your whole blog. You've put a lot of time into it and it is great to read. If you're interested in New York or the wilderness where we did a white water rafting trip through the Grand Canyon for a week and how to pick an operator, check out my last couple of posts as yesterday we just started the slow process of putting our most popular posts from our discerning food and travel blog on here under my name as I write for it too. Hope you like the Grand Canyon article. https://steemit.com/adventure/@katythompson/my-trip-of-a-lifetime-grand-canyon-rafting-week-and-how-to-choose-an-operator#comments

Where will @sweetsssj travel next ??

sweet2.png

Very nice! It is a dolphin city ha ha! In my city Hong Kong, dolphin keeping dying as there are many pollution which affect their living environment. And many people eat dolphin which reduce the number of them. Last year, many Japanese people come to Hong Kong and eat dolphin with a high price, which make people kill a lot of dolphin for food. Very Crazy!

Oh no.. i'm so sad to hear that.. That's such a bad precedent. I really hope things can change and attitudes towards them change too.

Hai @sweetssj ... I see you really like Animals, does the Animal you post this also include your pet ..? I see there are Lizards too .. ha..ha..your post is nice, i like.
But I do not like to see you photo with snake, I am afraid .. ha..ha.

Oh, i definitely do love animals. Of course, none of these animals are my pet, but I did dream of having my own nature reserve with sea lions one day..

not sure if I could handle a snake, that would terrify me..

Great pictures, that is one photogenic sea lion.

I completely agree!

And the human next to it causes pain in your eyes indeed :p

What a truly great experience @sweetsssj. I was pleased to hear that over 90 specialist trainers and veterinarians take care of these beautiful animals. Sometimes these attractions don't care for their animals as they are more interested in profit.
Grace and I recently went to Victoria to see a massive seal colony - There was literally thousands of them! We watched them swim and play in the water, so I can only imagine what a delight it would have been to swim in the deep end with one! That would have been an awesome experience. Thanks for sharing such a detailed journey as always! Cheers @myday

it was indeed a lovely experience. I think from my tour around their labs and other facilities, I can tell they spend a whole lot of money on making sure they look after their animals very very well.

Thanks for the link, i shall check it out!

Well that is certainly good to hear! I hope you enjoyed seeing the pictures from Phillip Island in Victoria.

I certainly did! I got confused because I was sure I upvoted it and I went to your profile and didn't see it anywhere! Then I realised it was on your wifes account 😊

Lol! Well thanks for checking it out - that's dedication!

I totally agree with you @myday that "sometimes these attractions don't care for their animals as they are more interested in profit". i happen to love animals a lot but unfortunately the reserves in my country have been poorly managed over the years and as a result i personally feel deprived of such an awesome moment and i will totally love to have such an experience right now LOL @sweetsssj . Thanks for this post. BTW, which camera do you use, your pictures are always so clear?

Thanks adekemi, I actually really hope that the facility cares for the dolphins / sea lions and sting rays as well as they say they do. They certainly make it seem as though it's a 5 star hotel for the animals so that's kind of reassuring.

The photos are actually taken by one of the staff members at Dolphin Cay, as part of your sea lion interaction experience, you get a private tour of all of their facility including their laboratory, housing pen, their water cleaning pumps, access to the private beach, and a dedicated photographer.

You do have to pay for the photos though, and they are quite expensive. I would use my own camera but they wouldn't let me or anyone else take electronic equipment.

Otherwise, I now have two cameras. My old one is the Canon 5D Mark ii, and my new one is the Sony A9.

Wow what a camera! Thanks for telling!

I really hope so too. Thanks a bunch @sweetsssj for the response.

you're welcome

That is amazing pictures you taken and specially with that sea lion because its taken so beautifuly and its not harm you. I like Dolphins photography too because they are nice every places.i like one thing important that you also describes about how to take precautions during touching and stay near with sea lion because sometimes people don't know how to behave with them so its good information.

thanks, the trainer who took us around was really great, he had lots of interesting information like about not touching the head etc. It was really educational!

That is pretty funny that the Sea Lion could smile and show its teeth.

I think she was trying to smile haha 😁

Say Cheeeeeeesssssssseeeee!!!! LOL. I'm surprised they are able to teach them to do that in some ways. They have to be fairly smart.

It's nice post. And very nice. Yours make me to do traveling with you. Hi... @sweetsssj. I am sweetcharity. The people called me with "sweet" my name similar with your name. Really like all the photographs You shared from Dolphin Cay, the 1 Sea Lion was VERY photogenic !!

Thanks Again 4 another incredible post...

Have a Great Week !!

gosh thank you so much for the compliments really blessed! Have a good week 😊

Epic , awesome photos 👏🏼

Oh my goodness! The photos of Carnella posing next to you are SO funny and cute! <3 Would you say summertime is the best time of the year to visit?

Haha they are aren't they! I was so surprised when I saw the pictures. I would say early or late summer would be better. It does get a little too hot around these times!

Great post again @sweetsssj, thank you. This time green dress, but PLEASE if you have time, explain the sleeves to me? Can you somehow extend the sleeves? Or how does that dress work. Also, was the water cold? I have a bit the feeling it was chilly. Also, was that natural sea water or did it smell a bit like chlorine? I can imagine the water must be maintained with those big animals in it. A lot of pure facts and info. Thank you again.

hi lucky.digger!!

It's attached to the main part of the dress with a bit of material and you put your arm through the loop! It moves quite freely as well!

And yes, the water was actually really cold, I guess it's because this is the temperature the Sea Lions prefer, it didn't smell of chlorine though, i'm assuming that's the smell in swimming pools right? As far as I'm aware, the only thing that they do is filter the water with the pumps.

So SWEETsssj of you for upvoting my comment. Very kind of you. Please don't upvote this one and give it to somebody else, OK? Thanks for your answers, still trying to figure out the dress. I hope you did not get ill from the cold water, women are very sensitive to that. And uncomfortable flying around half the globe if you not feeling too well. Anyway, I am waiting for your next post and CU there!

Thanks lucky.digger, thankfully the air temperature was so warm, it really is hot there! I'm actually just suffering from sun burn and not a cold. But travelling definitely made me very tired. I'm going to be taking a break from travelling AND blogging and just blogging for a little while to catch up on some rest.

Hi, I like your post on swimming with the pigs and now you feeding the Sea Lions. You are fortunate to be able to travel so much. All your photos and video are great. Please keep them coming as I really enjoy reading and watching them. Thanks @jackpot

aw thanks jackpot, i'm really thankful to be in a position to travel quite a bit. I really appreciate you coming by and leaving a comment! :)

These photos are amazing. And you are looking so good.👍

thank you yuvi!

Dolphins are intelligent animals and the efforts Dolphin Cay is taking to rescue and rehabilitate them are really nice. Your photos with the dolphins and the one with Sea lion are great. I really like that you took the effort to visit this center which is dedicated to nature preservation and support to animals. Great work!

I had a chance to go and look at Sarus cranes ('tallest flying birds in the word') in their natural habitat. Their habitats are rapidly being destroyed due to new city growths and the species is endangered. I had the opportunity to see and photograph a whole family of these wonderful worlds. I have written a blog about them. Please visit if you have time. Thanks

Thanks vm2904, I will take a look at your blog :)

Thank you so much. I have not posted any big cat blogs today but @the.wild.eye has posted very cute lion cubs blog. I have re-steemed it.

The sea lion actually looks like he's smiling in one of those pictures. How cute is that!

Very interesting post and I love the sea lion pictures. Thanks for sharing.

@sweetsssj
Always sharing great travel experience...

Once i get an incline of a new post from you i leave everything to enjoy myself and wow...i never get disappointed or bored reading through. Atlantis Bahamas is truly a paradise...keep steeming hot
And yes, the sea lion smile is awesome!

But i have a question, to you why do you think these cute creatures are called sea lion?

Incredible photos.

thank you danish!

Dolphins, sea lions... all human friendly. Unfortunately not all the humans are friendly to them. Its a great thing building these centers to protect and save them (from some of us), but just imagine how wonderful it would be if we let them live freely in their own natural environment. Planet earth is a tiny speck in this universe, but its such a hospitable home to us all. Lets try to keep it that way, you people of the world!

Seems like you are having a proper fun with Sea Lions :-)

Lots of fun! I miss them already! Next place I visit I'd really like to swim with them in the sea!

Thanks so much for this post. I enjoyed reading about your experience at Dolphin Cay. I actually didn't know that Sea Lions can become aggressive if you touch their head. I'll keep that in mind if I ever come into close contact with one.

I saw a little girl accidently touch it's head, and it flipped out and swam away.. It was an accident of course, but best stick to rules!

Yes, I definitely agree. I think somehow the sea lion views it as a form of aggression.

wooww..so much fun..look at the sea lion's smile and his action lol....really love it..they must be gilot good training..!!you are really lucky being there..hopefully can visit that place on day..!!
wish you have winderfull day @sweetsssj

Is pictures say stories then this story seemed too much fun. Great camera work as well. Way to go!! 😊

thanks vinyprop, I have to say the pictures do tell a good story. The photographer was actually included as part of the experience. I actually had to spend a bit of money to buy the pictures!

Thank you @sweetsssj. In my opinion the pictures came out brilliant because the person in those pictures was so awesome... 😄😊

thanks 😊 You're really sweet 🍡

Wow that sea lion can smile and stick her tongue out - so well trained. Glad you had so much fun in the Bahamas your blogs are just awesome.

thanks kontora! I was surprised to see the picture because I didn't know it was pulling faces whilst having the picture taken! such a pleasant surprise haha!

Pretty cool story! I like it

thanks sirhenry!

Now that's what I call absolutely epic! One day I'm going to visit Atlantis and do just that.
