Context
HIVE Witnesses are the pillars of the HIVE blockchain but many Hivers don’t even know we exist or don’t even care. Those who know and/or care don’t have much visibility on what the “job” involves or how much witnesses earn.
All witnesses need from you is a witness vote that costs you nothing (it does not use your vote power like a post or comment upvote). By voting for a witness, you are telling the blockchain that you trust that Hiver for performing task of signing blocks and keeping the Hive platform stable and safe.
All the transactions (activities) you perform (create/edit posts, comments, upvotes, transfers etc...) on various Dapps (hive.blog, peakd.com, hivesigner.com etc...) have to be witnessed and signed by a software running on a witness node (computer/server) running 24/7/365.25 before being added to the blockchain. This operation can be time consuming and requires some expenses. For doing this work, HIVE Witnesses are getting rewarded with Hive Power for each block that they have signed and successfully added to the blockchain.
Blocks of transactions are processed in rounds of 63 seconds each. In each round, 21 witnesses will be picked to sign the blocks and have 3 seconds to sign. The 21 witnesses in each round are the top 20 witnesses plus 1 witness amoung the remaining (called the Backup Witnesses). The single Backup Witness in each round is selected in a weighted random manner based on their ranking, the higher they rank the more likely they are to be selected.
Every day, the system generates some HIVE tokens that are split into three pools:
- 65% is allocated to the reward pool that is used to pay author and curation rewards.
- 15% is allocated as interest to Hive Power holders.
- 10% is allocated to the Hive Proposal System pool to fund new projects voted by the community.
- 10% is allocated as producer rewards to the HIVE Witnesses for their work for the blockchain.

General Producer Reward HP distribution
There was a total of 800734 blocks produced and 224721.39 HP earned during last week.
The column chart below represents the distribution of Hive Power earned by witnesses over the last week.
Notice the dramatic drop past the rank 20. Remember, each round is composed of each of the Top20 witnesses and one backup witness. This means each Top20 witness has to sign a block every 63 seconds (max), while for a backup witness, it will be much less often. The servers of the Top20 witnesses are thus under higher load/stress than those of the backup witnesses. You need to keep this in mind when looking at their number of missed blocks: 10 missed blocks for a witness at rank 10 does not mean the same as 10 missed blocks for a witness at rank 120 for example.

- Blocks can be missed for various reasons including technical issues, misconfiguration, bugs in a new version of the blockchain software etc... and the higher your rank, the higher the chance it can happen.
- Some witnesses are managing multiple projects for Hive and the communities in addition to maintaining their various nodes and hence don't often post.
- Click on the witness names to get to their witness announcement post.
- The earnings in USD below are just an estimate and are only effective if the witness are powering down and convert their liquid HIVE to fiat. By keeping their producer rewards powered up, they take the risk of seeing those staked HP loosing value if the market goes down.

I have been here 2 months today.
I haven't voted because I dont want to vote for the 'wrong' project or person without knowing it's 'wrong' and get blacklisted by the autovote oligarchy and have my investment taken away.
I see discussions about what is quality content but what does that matter if most of it will never be read and its popularity is based on bots, likwid, appreciator, whale builder, not engagement.
Cant seem to find any experienced users or anyone else explaining those things.
I do see fake new user accts making $100 in their first week (doing tutorials on how to use Hive) while actual new users get ignored even when they use the tags they are told will attract support.
I didnt come here for the rewards, wouldn't use the bots if I knew how. I came here to do what I can to promote the grassroots adoption of decentralized society.
I believe in the potential of blockchain and especially Hive.
I gave up posting tho, why waste my time researching and writing quality content that no one is gonna read and has no chance of competing for engagement against bots and auto voting circlejerks.
So far to me it seems more like a pyramid scheme right now.
And if you aren't at the top you're just here to be fed on.
I dont upvote content that uses bots anymore.
I spend my resources supporting quality content that isn't part of the oligarchy and welcoming and supporting actual new users.
I appreciate and applaud your hard work and dedication in all you do here.

Hi appreciate your comment here and what you said does make sense. When I started over two years ago when we were still on Steem, I observed the same thing. A blogging platform that financially reward its users for posting and curating will obviously attract not just content creator but also people who are not really interested in content but in the financial side of it. Without Steem or Hive, many of our users would rarely write any blog or make any decent comment on other blog posts.
Maybe by attracting more and more users we might have a better balance.

If there were a way to integrate it intuitively and according to individual preference.
Perhaps if you follow someone you can set auto tip or something.
Or have upvotes and following/followers ratio to rank content as far as trending.
That would be a more relevant method for engagement and interaction.
Put creating a following on the content creator and the community.
Not on autovotes.
That might also be a method for stopping scammers as well as driving quality content.
I think the tipping idea like on Peakd is a good start.

The keyword here is decentralisation I think. Not being centralised by a big entity means the users have to provide the services themselves. Witnesses are providing the network and the database (the blockchain). Other users provide services such as auto-vote, wallet etc...
Now in order to implement more features, we need more volunteer developers.
Why would they have to be volunteers?
The community should decide what it wants and have access to knowledge and information to choose, and thus drive development.
Reward for operation and maintenance (witnesses) should be intrinsic and expand in relation to network expansion.
Equitable positive interaction and opportunity will drive adoption on all levels, content creators, curators, and consumers but more than that, we need the individual network, preference driven, instant response capability, and multimedia integration that a facebook provides with the advantages of decentralization.
I meant just more developers, volunteers or paid for.
Pretty great information as I have also tried to run a node at some point and wondered if it could be financial sustainable. Of course it was not a full node, but rather one with MIRA.
What I would be also interested in this top would be for example what support a witness needs to make it to TOP100 (How many HP "delegated")...?
