Having to do without coffee is crazy. But as I wish to participate I would sacrifice tasting it.

The explanation is simple, the aroma of coffee makes my imagination fly, it is irreplaceable, I love when they are grinding the beans, I remain as a statue during the process, just feeling the essence.

I would propose a solution in the following way... I smell the coffee grind while tasting a similar hot drink, the aroma would make me imagine drinking the most exquisite coffee, I would savor it and enjoy it as usual.

Without coffee

That's a really good idea to trick the brain a little bit. Smart. I think that it would actually work too. 🤔 🤓

I want to try it and share the experience, but first I must initiate the cerebral programming together with the olfactory one. Let's see how many times I will need to try it until I achieve the deception 😅

I think the side effects are what make it harder to achieve the deception though. You would need do do tremendous mind work 😂

That's a super interesting point of view there. Yeah, I think the mind is so powerful, that if we're smelling coffee, we could trick ourselves into thinking that we're drinking it! Hahaha! No way man🤣
I love the tooned photo 👍

The power of the mind and visualization...
I smell coffee and savor it.
I made a gif with the same photo that I will share some other time hahaha

You are me and I am you. I would totally do that. That aroma is just magic for the soul. Ohh that face without coffee? I’m not going to cross it. Hehe!

Luckily, being without coffee is only for the contest. 😅

WOOW, what a difficult decision!

But since I have to choose one, I decide NOT to smell the coffee.
After having spent months without my sense of smell due to covid, I can say that I got used to not smelling some things.
So, despite the adversities OVERCOME, I decide to enjoy and savor every day my big cup of coffee as I like it, with powdered milk, sugar, chocolate or cinnamon, well blended in the blender to make enough foam so that we have white mustaches and make faces to have fun while having breakfast with the family.
You have to take advantage of all the senses so I also enjoy listening to the coffee maker in my home....

Mmm Delicious!

I like how fun you made it. I guess we just have to look at the bright side of everything. I can't imagine what it was like, to lose your sense of smell. You make it seem not so bad after all.

Like everything in life, there comes a time when you adapt to the situation you are living... But thank goodness I got my sense of smell back as well.

You are right. That’s the special thing about us humans.

Even covid put us in perspective about not tasting or not smelling... the decision is a matter of preference and probably of our most dominant sense. Even if that is not my choice, I understand yours because there is nothing better than the taste of a good cup of coffee!

I'm glad you share my thoughts hehehehe. It is really terrible to go through covid, I think we never imagined not having some of our senses. Greetings!

That peg takes the cake (coffee) ☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️❤️💕

Wow with that description of how you like your coffee, no one would resist.
Hahaha the white whiskers, I haven't read or heard anything like that for a long time.
The truth is that they didn't make it difficult...I'll try not to delay in making a decision.

The milk-white whiskers remind me of my childhood. hehehehehehe

Don't delay, you are also a coffee addict. And I know you will make the best decision.

I haven't heard that for years, my friend, the white whiskers, hahahaha. My mother scolded us when we drank milk and we got that mark and my brothers and I loved to play with it.😃😋

Yeah, it was always fun to drink milk and for us to make mustaches. It would drive our parents crazy, then they came up with the catchy "Got Milk" Ad 🤣

Hahahaha just like that Milly . Definitely coffee and its versions and stories from our childhood are the best.....

I have to agree with that one:)

I think it would be difficult to lose a sense of smell because a lot of our taste sense actually comes from or sense of smell. That's unfortunate that you got covid and lost that sense but I suppose your answer is based on personal experience, so that's interesting.

Of course. although they have a union, each person develops a different sense. It is a super personal experience. But I got over it and today I have all my senses in perfect harmony.

I'm glad that you got your senses back. It's lucky that the symptoms were short lived and not permanent. I couldn't imagine not being able to ever smell coffee again

Thank God I passed in a couple of months. My sense of smell is intact. So much so that I'm in the middle of class and in the office making coffee my mouth is watering.

A very thoughtful choice. Haha, I'd choose same too cause who am I without tasting coffee? Haha. It has really helped me these few days to stay up late and read for my exams so I'd rather not smell it than not taste it so kudos. I love your GIF.

I wouldn't say I'm addicted to coffee, but the world is a safer place when I drink it 🤣
I just wouldn't want to make the choice, but if I was forced to, then I would carry out a lot of antics to frustrate everyone 🤣

but the world is a safer place when I drink it

You bet it is. A lot of people don't know this. Lol

if I was forced to, then I would carry out a lot of antics to frustrate everyone

This one got me rolling, I wish you were forced to, would love to learn those frustrating antics maybe I could use them someday 🤣.

You have to take advantage of all the senses so I also enjoy listening to the coffee maker in my home...

That's a super valid point there.
It's about doing everything mindfully, and using all the senses and being in the present. So yes, the sound of the coffee maker adds to the experience also 👍

Interestingly, we taste with our noses too. When we take a sip of coffee, the smell is 80% responsible for the taste; meaning that if you can't smell, you probably only can taste very faintly that it's coffee....,we%20experience%20come%20from%20smell.

But just for the caffeine factor, I'll probably have to choose with losing the sense of smell and drinking a 20% tasteful coffee, otherwise, I'll never wake up. 🤣

I guess I could also snort it.

@edprivat Haha, snorting coffee would be hilarious. I guess what you say about smelling and tasting makes a lot of sense.
It's the same with semen. I gather women would be keener on tasting/swallowing for its natural medicinal benefits; but somehow, the strong scent could be a deterrent. That's a shame because there are so many beneficial healthy claims of semen being an excellent mood booster, sleeping hormone and anti-depressant.
#justsayin 🤷‍♀

Omg 😱 this conversation took a wrong turn giiiiirl... 😫

There is a tree here in Spain, it's called the carob tree and I kid you not, when it was flowering last month, its full scent is semen smell, and we got used to it eventually. So, so should you 🧐😂😂😂

You know what I am taking the conversation in an even darker corner, did you know that drinking you own urine is good for you? There's an MMA fighter that was promoting this for a while, he did look very young for his age, but I don't know if it's related to his daily practice...

Aaaah it's almost midnight the kids are sleeping 😌 it's time to take all the wrong conversational turns hahaha

Haha, there's a parish here in Jamaica that smells like semen. It is miles away but I remember driving the long distance to de-stress when I used to live here 🤣

Drinking your urine, my my! I only just started drinking beer recently, but before I swore to my husband that I'd drink my pee over drinking beer... Now I've gained new knowledge that maybe I missed out on a healthier option.... damn!!!🤣

Don't ever apologize for dark conversations, they are encouraged here! 🙃

Jesus, this conversation took a turn
Lmao. I want no part of the smelling or tasting of urine or semen.

ha,ha,ha ha,ha,ha,😄😂👐

Wait, I thought I was reading about coffee for the last 10 minutes. How did semen get into my coffee 😝

Haha! It got your attention though 😂
I will check to see what your choice would be:)

If my coffee will have semen in it I will have to give up both smelling and tasting it! 😂

Haha! We have come up with the most effective way to kill the coffee industry right there 🤣... I would be right with you lol!

The world is no longer a safe place.

Hahaha what a way to start the day, I read all the comments from bed and couldn't contain my laughter.
Here in Venezuela there is a fruit called Ciruela de huesito, it is small and not very fleshy. Once when I was in the office a coworker was eating the fruit and another one said to her, "Finish it quickly because you smell like semen" we all laughed and I replied... "I thought I was the only one who had noticed the similarity of smells". So the bony plum smells like semen.

Haha! That's hilarious🤣

It's good when you can identify whatever it is that emits that smell, so you know what to avoid on important occasions.

I like to make trouble sometimes 🤣

You decided to talk about scientific fact, so I'll go with the first part, I prefer 100% of the smell rather than 20% of the taste. I'll see how I stay awake 🤣

Snorting coffee eh! Now that's the kind of coffee nerd I wanna be friends with! What say we go snort some coffee later this weekend!

Try not to drown in it though

I am not responsible for whatever happens after the snorting 😉

It should be written on every coffee packs 😂👍

I'd buy that pack 😂😂

Lol snort it. 😂
It's true what you said about the link between smell and taste. Our tongues can mainly only register sweet, salty, bitter, sour and umami, most of the other tastes come from smell. Blind folded with your nose plugged, its really difficult to discern the difference between and apple and a raw potato. Lol

 2 months ago (edited)

@leaky20 It's funny that you say that about apples and potatoes. As a teenager, I never liked apples because I thought they were like eating raw potatoes. 🤣
That's because I compared (American) apples to my local Jamaican apples which are soft, delicious, and sweet. They are known as Otaheti Apples. I had massive trees in my backyard that would be laden with those apples. 😋

otaheti apples.jpg

That's interesting. I've never even heard of those before. So many fascinating fruits and vegetables that I'm unaware of.

Yeah, "exotic" fruit is amazing. My husband is not a fruit guy, I have to force him or trick him to eat fruit, but it's just different culture... and I have to admit that fruit that he might like such as pomegranate might have been more like punishment for me to eat 🤣

No to pomegranates...interesting

Haha! That lion is so cute. I wish I had a cheetah as my bodyguard here. I haven't ventured out much in local towns, but having a cheetah by my side would be reassuring 😁

I'm sure you know that potatoes in french is Pomme de terre? Which is "earthy potato" literally...

Yes, that was one word that I could say and understand 😂

This fruit is known as Puma lacquer or Puma rosa.😁

I will look it up 👍

 2 months ago (edited)

That's the thing about the smell. It's almost like you can't taste it if the aroma isn't there. Now I've got scientific evidence 😃😃.

I once lost my sense of smell when I had Covid-19, I thought it was annoying but I can still enjoy coffee even though I can't feel the strong aroma of coffee.

I try to imagine and simulate my life. Trying to never taste coffee again and try to find a drink substitution to replace the 4-5 cups of coffee that I drink every day. Finally, I couldn't find the best scenario. It seems that I will choose not to be able to smell coffee but can still enjoy a cup of coffee, because my body and brain need coffee to continue living.

Sounds like an unpleasant experience not being able to smell coffee (or anything) when you had covid. Good choice on choosing tasting. By the way, in either scenario you would still be able to drink the coffee, just wouldn't be able to smell or taste what you are drinking. So regardless you would still get the effects of the caffeine and all that.

hello @leaky20 Thank you for describing it well, I seem to have misunderstood. But whatever it is, I need caffeine from coffee.

I think a lot of people were thinking that as well. But we would never ever consider stopping people from drinking coffee or even thinking about stopping 😉

 2 months ago (edited)

That must have been a terrible experience when you lost your sense of smell. I'm happy that you're all good now. That's a great look in the photo! 😁

There will always be different opinions on which coffee taste better, depending who and where the persons from. My personal preference is also locally sourced coffee from my own hometown called "Sidikalang Coffee" (not worldly famous as the Aceh Kopi Gayo = Gayo Coffee from Aceh). And there is an argument whether the variants of Arabica or Robusta taste better, I, as a coffee enthusiasts would say that I actually prefer Arabica than Robusta, but.... i would never say NO to a good blend of both variants. Additional spoonful brown sugar or frothy milk or a dash of salt or a mix of all, just enough to balance out all flavor to a perfect cup of coffee.

 2 months ago (edited)

...and what are you talking about @riyuuhi?

Have you noticed that there's a topic for discussion?

Ahh sorry. A newbie on the site.

Choosing between never smelling coffee and never tasting coffee is a very tough one indeed, since the two actions are co-dependent and tasting coffee without smelling it first is quite impossible. So I might choose not tasting it if I can not smell it.

credited to giphy

Me without coffee is highly impossible. Although I don't really need the caffeine kick to pick me up in the morning, the drink itself is part of my morning breakfast that I can't really let go.

Interesting choice. I see the sense in it.
I couldn't imagine giving up coffee either.

I would prefer never to have to make a choice either, but if it was Russian Roulette, I would take the chance and not give an answer...haha!

Me without coffee is highly impossible

Me too, I think the world is safe when I have coffee!

Oh I'd definitely give up the smelling. Drinking coffee is not just about the taste to me, it is entwined with so many memories of sleepless nights before exams that I just can't give that up! Drinking coffee has resulted in so many lovely chats with friends at a cafe that smelling coffee alone would never be able to replace. I mean if you say to a friend "Let's go sniff some coffee at a cafe" they'd probably call 911!

They probably would think that you're crazy if you just wanted to go smell coffee in a coffee shop. It would probably look pretty stupid as well 🤣

Yeah, the social aspect of not being able to drink coffee, only smell it would be devastating! 😂

If I were forced to only smell coffee again and never taste it, I would plea to sniff farts instead. The reason is that sniffing farts is reported to preserve heart health and prevent dementia. I discovered that from my girlfriend who is quite a farting machine. She researched that information to let her husband see just how privileged he was to have free "therapy"
#justsayin 😆

How are you coming up with these 😂

I thought we were done at semen, but by the looks of it you're on some real good Coffee. Where can I snort some of that? 😂

 2 months ago (edited)

Haha! I guess it's the superior quality of the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee that I'm drinking here at my hotel (free refills), mixed with the strong smell of sinsemilla that's emitting from every room on the block except all the happy reggae beats and glorious sunshine.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, but never had a chance to have a go at it. It's quite difficult to come by in my country. I will keep an eye out for it next time I'm travelling! Jamaica sounds gorgeous!

 2 months ago (edited)

oh... it's a very difficult question but the answer came easy to my mind, and I'm going to explain it below. I have tasted hundreds of coffees, half have been really good and half have been honestly bad. However, the smell of the coffee has never ever let me down, and that's the best part. The smell of coffee is invariable, it is characteristic, it is strong and it remains over time, so that is my choice. ☕️

That's a super interesting point when you look at it from that perspective. Thanks for sharing those thoughts 👏

You make a really solid point there. I've never actually smelt any bad coffee now that I think about it. But sure have had my share of bad coffee! But you know what they say...bad coffee is still coffee and I'd still drink it 😂

We all know that our sense of smell is completely linked to our sense of taste.....

My life without coffee would not be life, but if I have to choose between its pleasant aroma and its delicious taste, I would stay without smelling it, but I would continue enjoying for the rest of my life that exquisite flavor, drinking it and tasting it pleasantly, imagining that peculiar aroma that has its different brands, but I would never stay without drinking every day at least one cup of my adored coffee.❤️☕️😍

I think you share the same opinion as many others. It would be the most difficult thing for coffee lovers to ever give up tasting coffee over smelling it. From your phot I gather that you feel completely crazy without coffee, right?

I would really go crazy without my beloved coffee. yes, in the picture I wanted to show amazement and madness for trying to take my coffee cup, that's why I decided to take the picture today with my coffee cup in my hand, so that no one would ever think of taking it away from me, hahaha. 🙏☕️☕️☕️😍

I think you made a great decision to add the cup 😆
Do you suffer physically in any way if you miss coffee for a day?

That photo is a great representation of life without coffee. I'd have the same expression I think lol.

If I had to choose, perhaps I would go with not tasting coffee. There's something about the aroma. It's like magic when brewed. It takes you to places. Almost nostalgic. If I can smell it, I could pretend to be drinking it. Coffee without that signature smell is just Ewww.

This would be me without coffee. I guess I would just snap at everyone around me. I'd probably act like mean fairies are whispering in my ears, nasty things to do.

That's a really good point about the aroma. The smell of coffee is a really big part of the experience.

I'm glad someone agrees.

Wholeheartedly 👍

Haha! Yeah I can relate to wanting to snap at everyone around me when I do not have coffee lol.

I'd probably act like mean fairies are whispering in my ears

Fairies whispering in your ears is not such a bad thing though, right? I think it's better than having mosquitoes buzzing in one's ear 😡

That makes the two of us. 🤣🤣

Mean fairies are certainly better than mosquitoes. I can't stand them.

Thank you.

I have a vaporizing, semi-automatic, AI-driven, heat-seeking, steampunk-designed, machine gun. I’ve been training it on machine-learning algorithms for a few days now, but I’m warning you guys, NOW, I’m a damn good programmer and I’m quick.

See, it’s simple - touch my coffee and find out just how good I am 😊 😡 😤 😠

In defense of the realm,
I can’t choose.

Hey yes, I have found that people can't live without coffee, that's a punishment! haha!

Indeed it would be

I choose never to taste coffee.
Because coffee may still be tasted with the nose or nasal sense while being ingested with the aroma. I can smell the flavor of the coffee and will imagine it while drinking it. :)

Sad Happy Hour GIF

I think it's a rather brave decision to give up tasting coffee ever again, but agree that we do in fact taste with our noses too.
Hmm, on another note, most people who drink coffee every day tend to suffer from headaches if they do not have the opportunity to drink coffee, what side effects, if any, do you think one might have from never smelling coffee ever again though?

Tasting with the nose - interesting way of looking at it. I get what you mean by that.
