"Nobody reads my stuff so I can't make any money."
Have you uttered these words? Did you say (think) them recently?
If so, then you might want to pay attention.
Two weeks ago, I decided to do an exercise. This was informal and I announced it to nobody since I did not want any interference. I always tell newer people that the key to success on the STEEM blockchain is to comment. However, I always did this without any accurate numbers.
The project started Sun 2/4 and ran through Sat 2/10. During this time, I did nothing except post like I normally do.
From Sun 2/11-Sat 2/17, I recorded all the payments that came in from my comments.
On Sunday 2/18, I tallied the SBD and SP, converted the SBD (for number purposes) using the SBD/SP rate posted on steemit.supply by @dragosroua and the price quoted on there.
There were two rules:
A. Post like I normally do which was verified by @abh12345's weekly report for @fulltimegeek's SOG report of roughly 100K words posted.
B. I was not allowed to upvote one single comment during that time so my SP had no effect.
A couple advantages that might exist:
A. My Rep is 66...personally, when I upvote comments, rep means nothing to me but some might give preferential treatment to higher reps.
B. I am on here almost 6 months meaning I do have relationship with some people from our interaction in the past. That said, there were a few votes I know I received from a couple heavy hitters that I never interacted with before.
I bring this up just to state it might be an advantage I have that a newer person does not.
Nevertheless, this is what occurred.
Over the 7 days, I earned 35.958 SBD and 9.020 SP.
Converting the SBD at the rate of 1.228 netted me 44.156 SP.
When added to the 9.020 SP, this brings my total to 53.176 SP.
At the time I ran the numbers, STEEM was priced at $4.35 for a total of $231.58.
I did this exercise to quantify what commenting can do. Anyone with under 500 SP should be using this approach. Even if you do not get 50 SP in a week, earning 25 should not be difficult. Quality comments receive upvotes from Whales, Orcas and Dolphins. Concentrating on this means you will not be posting the lame excuses I started this article with which, as shown by these numbers, are totally false.
Over the course of a year, using this payout, one will earn over $12,000 USD simply for posting comments. Of course, the naysayers will cite the fact that I have relationships with some of the people who voted for me, hence most will not get $231 from commenting right away.
Fair enough.
One thing I will guarantee is that if one posts comments like I did, that person will earn at least half of what I did. Plus, using this approach for 3-4 weeks will establish a lot of strong relationships. There is no reason why someone cannot be at this level within a month of getting started.
So there you have it. Based upon these numbers, there are 50 SP a week in the comment section just waiting for you.
Now you know the secret.

Hehe :) . My first meaningful sbds were from comments. One upvote gave me 0.65 sbd, i couldn't believe my eyes cos then my posts were getting little less than 0.14 , and still do as at now.
But then one just have to keep at it. The comments section allows for interaxtion with people already in the system

Well I'm six points lower than you in rep score and I got above $0.60 on one of my comments yesterday and that happens fairly often when I leave a well worded, meaningful response to the person's post or add something of value to it. Even when my rep score was lower and I was new I would sometimes get payouts over a dollar on comments back when STEEM was well below where it is now. SO I can definitely agree that commenting is a good way to earn but also to gain attention from the right people if you do it correctly (more than just a few words in the comment).
I've been earning pretty decent money this way since my first month here and some days I earned more commenting than authoring. And of course if you leave a good comment then that person is somewhat likely to go check out your profile...
I think that just goes to show that most people who upvote comments do not pay a whole lot of attention to rep score.
If the comment is something that intrigues people and adds to the conversation/post, they will upvote it.

Another benefit is gaining quite a bit more followers. I have not done any study, but I am pretty sure that commenting gains me a ton more followers than posting articles on my own blog. I also tend to find more people that I want to follow. I'm not sure there is any direct payout effect from followers, but they do seem to add to the conversation.

There is no doubt commenting gets on recognized...also by some bigger fish. A bran new person most likely isnt going to interact with a dolphin on the new person's post. However, when one comments, the chances of interacting with someone like that goes up greatly (and gaining an upvote and follower).

Iβve done this too. I think I earned more commenting than posting. I also gained more followers fast by commenting.
Commenting with a worthwhile intelligent response is the key to early success on Steemit.
This is the grind, and those without deep pockets will almost certainly have to do this to both build relationships/followers, and gain those early SP prizes.
Your level of commenting is out of the ordinary and when compared to the average it is streets ahead. And so, this figure is huge and indeed I am looking at a quarter of this total for the past 7 days. Saying that, this is still in my opinion, an epic financial result which brings more than just that to both your content, and the platform.

I guess I should have been clearer about post like I do...I was referring to the number of comments not so much the number of words. A new person could easily make a couple hundred well written comments a week when first starting out. There are times "conversations" take place within the comment section which adds to it.

I think the problem is people think they should just get money for free. It takes hard work. Making abgood comment is no different. Yes it does take hard work...although I find posting to be easier than many of the jobs I had in the past, especially part time ones.
But you are right, it isnt a situation where you put up a post and people hand you hundreds of dollars right off the bat.

Appreciate the guidance. I'm the new kid on the block (chain) and am absorbing all that I can in good solid advice. I try to make appropriate and well thought out comments. Even with what little exposure I've had, I can tell it makes a real difference. I've noticed, too, that posts such as yours that deal with steemit in a myriad of ways seem to get noticed and read and commented upon. I must also say that one quickly learns to foster relationships with persons such as yourself... not only to gain knowledge but to become active in an enclave or community within steemit. In my mind I picture the totality of steemit as an energy but within this metropolis of light I see smaller communities, villages, enclaves that are creating and developing their own energy and light. That seems to me to be what you are doing. So, in other words, I go to the light. BECAUSE I think this post is valuable to those within my own very small gathering (can't call us a village yet) I am RESTEEMING.
$230 is a whooping sum by any stand. It takes an average of 2hours to write a good post and receive good upvotes.
But you can do that with a comment and earn the same through comments.

Adding a quality comment to a good post is always a good idea....it is also a way to "thank" the writer for putting together the post.

I believe everything we do on here has an impact. Anything of quality helps move this site forward and has a compounding effect.
A comment helps to lengthen a post which will help the Google rankings. Also, someone could pull up the post down the road and learn something from the comment. We also gain followers which can help out own posts. Finally, any money we receive can be powered up and help each person we upvote.
It all compounds upon itself.
I can recall in my early steemit days when my comments were earning MORE than my actual posts.
I still have some comments earning well, but it varies from day to day.
I used to have a weekly earnings quota I wanted to meet and when I surpassed $25/week, I set the level to $50/week... I have stopped with meeting my quota and focus on not only quality content but also quality comments. There is a difference and I am THRILLED to see how many members have taken comments more seriously. I wrote a post just last week about how steemians are commenting...and MAKING real comments; no drive-bys and how spam is becoming less and less.
And that makes sense.
To start, when we are new, we are not known so our posts are floating around unattached. They do not get any views. However, by commenting, we are relying on the author's following.
Also, we usually do not attract people with much SP when we first start. In the comment section, you find all kinds of SP there. It helps to be where the heavy hitters are.
I monitor closely how I am doing by regularly checking in steem.supply and I average abouy 17-23 comments a day outside of replies I do on my posts.
I make an average if $1 per comment and it had reflected the highest that can remember at $103.
So I am proof that it is possible to engage the community and be rewarded for it.
My mindset has always been comment on topics that I am interested in. I comment from minnows to whales and best case scenario if I do a good comment is to get an upvote and get that person interested in my posts, maybe even gain a follower.
Worst case would be I am ignored. So either way there is more to gain in commenting well.
Engagement is key to success.
You wrote quality comments @maverickinvictus ever since you started appearing in the comment section of my blog. Right off the back, you jumped in and posted stuff that added to the conversation. This is something that we need a ton more of on this site. The average post gets 2.5 comments or something. That is very poor. Granted many posts are not worthy of many comments but that is another problem altogether.
If we had 5,000 more people like you posting around 20 comments a day, that would really push this site forward.

When you silo yourself to your region you miss out on a lot of good content and people out there.
I have always been an adventurer and I see posts of other people as a good way of making my mark and maybe even create a deep meaningful connection.

I know from @abh12345's stats that I don't comment as frequently as you, but I have focused somewhat on commenting and make anywhere from 1-3 SBD (and corresponding SP of course) each day. So probably 15 or so SBD per week. It's an easy, and for me anyway, enjoyable way to supplement what you get from posting. Thanks for the experiment and motivating me to up my commenting game!
It also helps to grow your following while growing your account. Not a bad way to do things.
Most all your comments in my posts warrant an upvote from me....you leave some interactive stuff.
I don't imagine there's any reason to comment otherwise. I mean sometimes there's little more to say other than "Nice job" - in which case I usually say nothing, and maybe just upvote. I rather think that comments should be interactive, and create a discussion.
And yes, the commenting also helps grow your account, which can't really be measured in terms of SBD, but is likely more valuable than the monetary rewards in the long term.

This is really an eye opener. It is good to know that through commenting we have access to create good relationships in this community while earning also. Though it takes efforts to comment because it is expedient to read and understand a post before go ahead and drop good comment. I really buy the idea of comment alot because it has been helping me also. I will appreciate if you can as well point out some steemians that appreciate interactions on their posts in order to help the newbies.

In my case i earn about 17 to 22 USD per week through comments only. I am a participant in @abh12345 's weekly contest. This keeps me motivated to do more and also helps me earn some what more money. Comments can be rewarding sometimes, but most of the time it depends on how you manage to convince the author and some times luck can matter too.
If someone cannot invest on this platform then comments can help him build some reputation.
Great idea for an experiment. Thank you for conducting this as well as writing the results.
Steemit need more and deeper interaction, and less spammy/worthless comments. I hope your posts inspires many people to put more thought into their responses so that they can be rewarded and so that steem can become much stronger.

With the amount of comments per post (under three) the site is in dire need of more commenting. The numbers are even worse if we took out all the spam bots that operate on here. I imagine we probably average about 1 comment per post, a comment made by a real person that is.
Thanks for this encouragement. The other day I posted a couple posts throughout the day which didnβt make much. The comments for that day were worth over $20.
I find the key for me is consistency. Iβve noticed it the other way- when people consistently comment on my posts, I notice them, perhaps go check out their page. Iβm more likely to upvote someoneβs comment who I see regularly on my page. And I notice people who I comment on regularly also upvote my comments more.
Itβs not hard and itβs a great exercise for the brain to leave meaningful comments.

I remember you had briefly touched on it in one of your previous blog posts. As a newbie, reading that felt like stumbling on gold.
In the past days that I have been on Steemit, I think I have earned more from comments and upvotes on other people's posts than on what I earned from making posts on my blog.
And like you said, ability to earn quality returns from comments depends on the commenter's reputation, the reputation of the Steemian who made the original post, who sees and upvotes the comments, time, and a couple of other factors.
For newbies like me, it certainly makes more sense to comment than struggle to make new blog posts.
I will try this technique more.
I definitely agree that commenting is the key to building the value of a Steemit account over time. At the outset, original blog posts sent out into the ether are unlikely to gain much attention, so the key to growing a new Steemit account (and following) is with comments. Sort of a grind at first, but it can become enjoyable if you follow the right people. :)
That being said, a newbie Steemian starts with 15 SP. As a result, due to the way the Steemit curation algorithm works, there is a very different economic result for someone commenting with 15 SP vs. someone commenting with 15,000 SP.
My account just hit the 30-day mark over the weekend, and I am now re-adjusting my strategy. Curation awards (i.e. comments) are much more powerful (potentially exponential in nature, as you have suggested before) the higher your SP. So I am not focusing as much on the $$$ payouts right now and focusing much more on building my SP on an exponential basis. From 15 SP to 150 SP, and from 150 SP to 1500 SP, and then from 1500 SP to 15000 SP.
Comments are not curation...curation is curation.
Getting an upvote on a comment is an author reward and that has nothing to do with your SP. If I upvote a comment or an article, the vote counts the same for the person (as long as the voting percentage is the same).
This strategy is for newer people. Curating is something that is not a great deal for anyone under 50K SP. Even the 15K you mentioned doesnt net a great deal in proportion.
An excellent post. I have been working on interacting with the community over the past week, and I have been pleasantly surprised by the frequency and amount of upvotes my comments have received. Over the last 7 days rewards from comments have been 1.25 SBD + 0.30 Steem Power which is the equivalent of $7USD. This may not seem a lot but it is a good start as this is really my first week of commenting and I am really pleased with that. I am also enjoying being part of the community; where else can you get paid for having fun?

I joined steemit in September but I only got active about 2 weeks ago and I see lots of great potential in building up relationship with people from all walks of life and also earn steem in the process.
My activities on Facebook have decreased as a result of my new interest on steemit. This is just kool and with patient and interest on the plartform we will all benefits.

I try to follow your guidance or instructions, whatever you call it, about comments. I can't say I have earned 25SP, but whenever I am regular, I have seen that I earn at least 5-6 SBD in a week, even more I think. Given my relative inexperience and low rep to start with, I think that's quite good.
In fact comments kept me alive for the first few weeks and had it not been for comments, I think it would have been much more difficult for me to maintain the motivation and focus. The initial earnings from comments gave me the impetus that I needed. And off course, comments gave me most of my followers.
Thanks for this awesome advise which I discovered pretty early in my Steemit journey.

As for the return, 5-6 SBD is $25-$30 in a week..just for leaving comments on a website...not a ton of money but more than those people on Facebook are making.
Absolutely agree, who would pay me a penny for doing anything on FB unless I run a business there?
And even then, many who run businesses on Facebook dont make any money.
On here, someone can make money the first day by posting comments. It might not be a ton but it is most likely more than FB or YouTube paid.
Yes, though my earnings are pretty low as of now, I have earned here much more than the blogs I used to write and got paid in pennies through Google Adsense.
I am confident that I will be able to increase my earnings over the comings weeks and months. The system works like compound interest, earnings should ideally keep increasing for a long time to come. Hoping for the best :)
This is the golden nugget@svkrulze that most many miss. Everything we do on here does compound. One should make more the second month than the first....and even more the third than the second.
As long as the activity is consistent and the focus remains the same. Each SP that goes into ones account makes the VP worth more. This gives one greater impact on the entire ecosystem. A rep of 25 a month ago is now 45...an account of 15 SP is now 40 SP...etc...
Plus we get the compounding effect from the growth of the steem blockchain itself.
This is so interesting! I've been seeing people around here saying this same thing. I wake up every morning and I write. I'm here because I want to help and inspire people. I don't get into all the bots and stuff and the economics. But I would like to do better. And jealousy certainly kicks in when I see newer people doing much better than me. I need to get out there and comment and interact more. I should probably be spending the same or more time commenting as I do actually writing. My writing takes two to three hours every morning. I like to do it organically. I'm not into the bots and all that.
I have, from the very beginning, found it important to comment on posts that I relate with. The only time I had issues with commenting was when I had bandwidth issues. Since then I comment as much as I can everyday, with my bandwidth on my mind, mind you.
A lot can be achieved on this site with just comments. I have made relationships through my comments, I have drawn some big names to my blog posts because of my comments.
One of the first things I did on discord was fill the column, ginabot provided in its settings page with names of people who I wanted to be notified about when ever they post.
The importance of comments can never be overemphasized. At the same time, writing comments that show interest in the article under discussion pays more than commenting because you are expecting an upvote. The difference is evident.

Two months ago I was having my first days in Steemit.
I would look at my posts on the $0.00 and then it hit me - Of course I earn absolutely nothing, nobody cares about me or knows me enough to come and actually read my stuff in a platform where new stuff is always getting produced.
Thus I set myself to comment 100 times per day, and to really spend all of my energy into it.
On my first day, I earned more than $10 USD and was thrilled. The next couple of days it really compounded, and I finished my week with $140 USD worth of SP.
I can attest that commenting works, as I have written plenty of times. It is the best and most effective way for newbies to grow their SP levels, rewards and followers.
I also, as promised, wrote a post on this topic, mentioning you and this post - my apologies for the cat with the cupcake pic, but I didnt found yours and thought that one would serve as well hehehehe.

100 posts a day are a lot...but it is effective.
If one is serious about making some progress on here, in a rapid fashion, that is what is required.
You progress is evidence of that.
I have seen people earned few votes of @gentlebot and @things-2 for interesting comments. Yes, one need few strategies for earning from comments similar as blogging. However, people with low reputation and SP holding, its better to comment on whale's/orca's post rather than writing a blog unless they think that they are prolific writers. It can be a good beginning. I request @taskmaster4450 to make another blog on strategies for writing comments from his experience.
Yes there are bots that go around and hit up comments randomly which is a great thing. I have gotten a few in my time on here...it is always exciting to get a few bucks when either of those two hit you up.
As for low SP people, even starting with Dolphin is a great place. Many dolphins upvote comments and have enough voting power to give a decent upvote.
It is easy for you but it is so difficult for new steemians . Because our voting power is lowest and reputation power also. When we comment that many steemians comment also and give upvote in their own post. That is why most voting powered steemians will remain fast in ranking . Pulishers will give importance first comments. That is why it is so difficult for new steemians. If i do wrong, please forgive me.
You've heard about piranhas, right? A single one cannot do anything that would help it survive, but a group of such creatures could be deadly! I too am a minnow at Steemit, but I have found some minnows like myself who are very much open to conversations and are consistent in checking out my posts, its not a "follow-me follow-you" kind of agreement, rather I would like to describe it as my Steemit Circle, where we help out each other.
Whales are real here, but a 1000 minnows combined could make a ripple here! What we have to do is set aside our differences and become one! Profit minded people can get lost, I'm here for Steemit, not money, I want to find more people who are like-minded. You should be like that too. Eventually minnows will grow! We will make our voices be heard!
What you describe @jaedea is what I posted a number of times where the balance of power is slowly shifting.
As more newer people get involved and start amassing SP, even though individually, it isnt much, collectively it does add up. When one has a following of a lot of people with lower SP accounts, progress is made in doubling each of those accounts. It takes time but one can go from 25-50...then to 100...and so on. With that, the VP increases in proportion.
Imagine we went into a community and started selling something without growing a user-base or friend-circle, no one would actually give a damn to what you are doing ( except maybe a few ). What a newbie should do first at Steemit is to create that support-base by interacting with the Steemit community. It doesn't matter if you post long articles in during your initial Steemit days, what had to done is to reach out to as much members as possible. One could find out an interesting topic here, share your thoughts in the comments, reply to people who you think you have an answer to.
Eventually we could see a follower base growth and then we can see votes coming into the posts/articles!
All great points. I dont know why people on here think it is any different. They arrive on STEEM and expect everyone to come rushing to them. They are baffled when their content gets no upvotes and wonder why.....well the fact you are here three minutes and have zero following might have something to do with it.
Over time, commenting is a great way to build that following and let others get to know you.
Excellent result! It's a good thing you did a real experiment. I also set myself a plan for the number of comments a day (I mean it was quality of comments, not "great"))). My husband says it's like I got a job)))) it is Necessary to look who from users you commented)
It is kind of like a job in the beginning...at least a part time job. However, compared to a lot of work out there, this is much better.
And the results can be there. It also has the effect of compounding the results one gets on the articles since more commenting tends to get more followers.
Yes, I agree. I think we need a balance between articles and comments. My SP is still small, not a lot of followers, especially with a lot of voice, so my articles don't get a lot of votes yet. So I allocate my time so - one article per day and a certain number of comments
It seems so obvious to me, has been my strategy since day two. I didn't have a strategy on day one.
What do I have to offer on the blogging platform? Nothing that anybody knows about. NOTHING. That's not to say my writing isn't good or that my subject matter is awful. It's simply to say that nobody knows me.
How do I change that? Comment and engage. Thoughtful, germane comments are mana from heaven for a blogger. They tend to remember who made them.
I don't give a rip about rep but I do care about the people that I engage with. All the time.

You make a post about the most important topic on Steemit because many people wants to earn here but they didn't get the attention of beig members because of their new account and low steem power but commenting is the secret trick by which we can earn without posting and make very strong relationships of a writer and reader and whales always respect their true readers,so it's good to know that you make a post about this important point.π

I do have some things I'm really curious to know. So you have any idea how many comments you wrote? And how much time did it take?
My suggestion for users that try to earn via comments is to search for authors that regularly upvote comments below their own posts. And perhaps even more important follow and read stories you really like. Cause of you have fun, things are easy easier.
Commenting to me is like a gold handed over to everyone. Apart from the monetary value, there's the relationship to earn and then knowledge to receive. I think my greatest achievement from comments is the knowledge received. Since I am the type that always read an article to the end, before commenting, it means I have to fully understand the premises that the author is writing from. I have learned a lots in the last one month from reading and commenting on posts. Thank you @taskmaster4450 for always sharing some tips with newbies to encourage them to succeed.
People really underestimate the power of quality comments. I did discuss this in how to create a healthy group of followers.
Due to the fact that I donβt any of my followers and the people I am following in real life, that the way to go!
Remember people this is not facebook, where a message like Iβm going to sleep now will get you likes!
Here you try to build a community based on shared interests.
Building a community is the key idea.

I've definitely always made more from commenting than I have posting.... and that's because your articles were some of the first posts I read on the Steem Blockchain. I've also gained way more followers through comments than posts... which makes sense given that you can really only reach the people that already follow you with your posts.
Sometimes a whale will randomly upvote a comment I make, which can be several times the amounts I usually make on posts, but generally its a numbers game, lots of little upvote amounts.
Thatβs quite impressive. In addition to the quality of your comments, youβve got volume on your side. In my case, Iβve never be a prolific writer. In my heart of hearts, Iβm more of an editor than a writer.
Gotta work on that balance. π
The thing you do, in my view, @preparedwombat, is you make up for it with consistency.
That is also a huge factor on here. Haphazard posting or commenting isnt going to net someone much over time. It is the regular comment on an authors section, day in and day out, that catches one's eye.

Early on in my Steemit days I read about the importance of commenting, but I had trouble even finding posts I wanted to comment on or that I had value to add to the conversion. Just because you like a post, adding "great post" is probably worse than nothing at all in the long run.
However as I began to find people to follow with my interests, it not only became easy to comment honestly and with added value, it also became much more fun and engaging. It's the correspondence and meeting of new people that really makes Steemit an enjoyable place. Don't miss out on the best part!
Commenting is a fantastic way to build up some SP when just starting out here, when I have the time to create quality comments I am always rewarded. Even when we don't build votes, we build connections that might support us the entire time we are here, which could be more valuable than a bigger vote! People seem to forget that life is all about relationship, whether it's a quick relationship of discussing a post, or a lasting one where you discuss post after post and start talking on discord and learning about the person. Comment as often as you can!
Thanks @taskmaster4450 for a great piece for us noobs. I have been at this about 2 weeks now and find commenting the most rewarding part of the platform so far. I have only posted three articles and yeah, it's a downer when they don't get recognition. But I have had some great conversations in the comments and have made a good contact with at least one person I feel a personal connection with. I hope to earn more as I go on but for now just building a community bis the greatest reward and comments seem to be the best for that.

Over time, the commenting will help your posts since you will get people on your follow list. It all adds up.
Steem is a giant compounding system where everything builds upon everything else. Nothing happens in a vacuum on here.
One comment today could have significant impact on a post a week from now.

I couldn't agree more. I don't comment as much as I should be, but it does really provide extra income if your willing to put some thought into your comments. It's also not as easy to keep track of and I don't tend to look through my comments to see what has been upvoted. I like the surprise of getting the rewards when I'm not expecting it.
Yes it is something that few ever track. I know I did not although steem.supply does have a section to tell where one stands with it. To be honest, I only gave that a glancing look.
Actually writing down what was coming in was very informative. It helped me to realize how this works. There are lots of small upvotes....a number of middle of the road ones....and I got a couple nice hits..
Like anything else, it is all about the law of averages....posting many quality comments means that some big fish could possibly see it.
I might try and keep track of it a little bit more now that I really think about it. I know there have been quite a number of times where I check my wallet and I notice I've got an extra few SBD to claim in between post payouts. I didn't even bother to check what comments they came from, but I will probably start now.
This post should be mandatory reading for all new users who sign up. I get asked so many times by people how to get more upvotes on their posts and I always tell them to stop posting and start commenting!
Personally I love when people actually read my posts and write thoughtful replies. I always upvote those for a pretty good amount. Better comments would bring this platform to a whole 'nother level, in my opinion.

There is so much to be gained for all by posting comments. Everyone benefits on many different levels.
Yet most new people want to put up an article and make the trending page. When that does not happen, they get frustrated and leave.
That is why I tried to quantify it some. Even if one gets 1/2 the results I get...even 1/3, for a newer person with no SP in their account, it is a great way to start it growing. Plus it will allow people to learn who that person is.
A trending page for comments...now that would be interesting.

That would be a great idea @yabapmatt and that is supposedly what they must do. But charge to experience, Website owners don't reveal the tricks of the trade. It is always up to the users to explore the site or SteemIt on how he can benefit from it if the user has the enthusiasm and interest to explore more. But to some users who don't have this kind of mindset, they easily get discouraged and discontinue accessing the site.

Did you by chance record how much time you spent commenting? I think that would be a cool number to have too!
That would be an interesting addition although impossible since I am always all over the place doing different things. I go through fits and spurts with it.
At times I will post comments and then flip to researching my next article.
So there is no rhyme or reason to it in the regards you are referring.
I can tell you it is a fair bit of time.
I flip flop too by placing reading articles in-between work and things of that nature. It would be an extreme pain just starting a timer and stopping it over and over while working and commenting.
