I feel very strongly that STEEM is significantly undervalued right now. In my opinion, we should currently be one of the top 20 cryptocurrency projects. Plus, if the SMT launch goes as successfully in January-March as I believe it will, we could easily make it into the top 10.

Top 10? But.. What about all of Steem's problems?

Don't get me wrong, our project is not without it's problems. I know there are users/stakeholders who will point to the various things that need fixing, and cite those as the reasons we are not there.

The problems we have do need to be addressed, and those internal discussions we have on what needs to be improved are extremely important to continue having. My view though is that even with all the problems we have, we are still WAY BETTER than most of the other cryptocurrency projects out there.

Lack of Marketing

One of the things that our project has been extremely lacking in has been marketing/promotion of Steem to potential investors.

Can you believe that there are still investors out there who believe we still have 100% inflation, and Dan Larimer is hand-picking the witnesses with his ninja-mined stake? A lot of people who might actually be interested in investing in Steem have not taken a serious second look at the project since it's launch, and a lot has changed.

I want to fix that. I want potential investors to pay attention to Steem. I want them to take a serious second look at the project, and decide whether Steem is worth putting their money into.

Invest in Steem Social Media Blast Day

I am organizing an "Invest in Steem Social Media Blast Day", where we all take to the streets and start talking about how amazing Steem is.

I want to generate as much "buzz" about Steem across the internet that investors can't ignore it. I want them to think what's going on all of a sudden with that Steem project? Combine that with educational material that highlights all the amazing things we have going for us, and I think we have the potential to generate some serious interest in the project.

My (ambitious) goal is that as a result of this social media blast day, we push into the top 20.

When?

Soon :) Next week I will announce the date of the blast campaign and provide instructions on how everyone can participate.

Brainstorming

In this post, I would like everyone to brainstorm. What can we all do in order to make this a success?

Here are a few ideas:

Promote, but don't spam.
Focus on Steem as an investment (not on the blogging side).
Get the word out ahead of time, so that everyone in the community knows when to start "blasting".
Generate a collection of investment focused Steem memes and graphics.
Collect a list of positive things about Steem.
Users post to Facebook, Twitter, etc.
Collect news articles that talk positively about Steem.
Users create content on Medium/Reddit that talks about Steem.
Writers contact cryptocurrency publications and ask to write articles about Steem.
Users contact cryptocurrency based hedge funds to inform them about Steem.
Stakeholders sponsor paid advertisements.
Stakeholders sponsor paid articles in cryptocurrency publications.
Focus on Steem or all the DApps built on the blockchain (not just “Steemit”).
Users share their positive blog posts about Steem on various promotion services.
Users get articles published in local newspapers (usually free).
Users talk to their friends/family who are "curious" about investing in cryptocurrency about investing in Steem.
Try to save as much of the activity as possible until the day of the event.

A vast majority of altcoins are obnoxiously overvalued. People call it the bear market, but I still think it's ludicrous to value something at $1 billion with no working product and no signs of a revenue stream. Yes, this is capitalism, and the value is real - I understand. That doesn't make it justified, rationally.

Steem is probably one of the very few altcoins that is close to being valued rationally. That makes it highly undervalued from the warped cryptocurrency lens - I agree.

I appreciate your effort to do something about it. Frankly, it's astonishing it has taken 2 years for either Steemit Inc or any top witness to organise a PR campaign. However, if a higher price is your goal, the focus should be firmly on not only institutional investors (as you have listed) but more importantly - the crypto whales, the manipulation groups and the pump-and-dump groups. There's enough evidence for much of altcoins' value being derived out of the manipulation conducted by a handful of groups.

Or, don't worry about the price, the Top 10 or the Top 20; instead focus on onboarding new users, content creators and curators who will actually use the platform for what it was intended. This is the only way to build something that is sustainable.

Of course, meanwhile, PR & Marketing is absolutely crucial. Far more important than engineering, indeed. You can have the best product in the world, and it'll be bulldozed by an inferior product with better marketing. The need to reach out to as many people as possible is obvious and not negotiable.

Getting back to a platform that's friendly for content creators, consumers, commenters - I'm afraid Steem in its current state does not enable that. One look at the Trending page reveals this is a broken platform that does an abysmal job of valuing content. However flawed, the Steemit.com or Busy.org experience is far inferior to Reddit or Medium. Consumers want a platform that's easy to use, convenient, performant, and most importantly has curated access to the content and discussions they want to participate in. Till then, I'm too embarrassed to promote a platform that encourages scammers and opportunists. Granted, even in this state, it has every chance of catering to a significant niche; just not one I am interested in.

I have spent an inordinate amount of time and effort building on Steem through the years 2016 and 2017. I have seen it grow from a platform where only 20 users on whale bots earned 90% of the pool, to something far more diverse. I remain optimistic that SMT and Communities can lead to at least a few vibrant projects. I mention this so you do not dismiss this rant as divisive, but see it in context as a realistic assessment of what needs to happen. I have written enough about possible solutions in my blog over the years, if you want something constructive.

Finally, as a response to stakeholders sponsorships, I pledge to donate all of my witness profits after server expenses to an organised marketing campaign. At my rank, it's worth very little (maybe a couple of hundred Steem/mo) but my hope is higher ranked witnesses will be encouraged to contribute.

An important focus, but I don't think they are mutually exclusive goals. There are quite a few efforts already going on with this front (recruiting more users, improving the user experience, etc.) This particular campaign is purely focused on attracting investor attention.

When you talk about it from a user experience, you are totally right. When you look at it from an investment perspective though, this sounds like opportunity. A platform that still has some kinks to work out but has a solid foundation and lots of room to improve. Seems like something someone might want to put money into if they believed in the long-term trajectory of the project.

I remain optimistic that SMT and Communities can lead to at least a few vibrant projects.

When going into campaigning, I would suggest to create a campaign package, with the right messages, in different formats; And everybody who likes to contribute to spread the word about Steem, they use content from that package. When all create their own content, and use it, it'll become a chaos, looks (much) less professional (investors don't want to invest in something that is not professional). It is a damn shame, STINC doesn't do anything, while they have marketing people in their midst. But ok, we can't control them. So, I suggest to start creating a core team who create the marketing/campaign messages and materials. Also create a spot/place somewhere were everybody who like to help promoting in whatever way possible, can come together, at Discord for instance. Key is: structure, consistency, and professionalism.

Expanding on this idea, I think some key lead roles would be helpful. At the end of the day I think for something like this to be successful at least a few people would need to take charge of particular aspects of the project and from there things could become more diverse trickling down through the users. Some thoughts on those roles, thinking in terms of bare necessity as I see it.

Overall lead

Someone who keeps track and contact with the other leads and replaces them if necessary.

Technical Lead

Someone to provide data and analytics that will fuel the various types of content produced. Basically tasked with making things as accurate as possible, while also highlighting the strongest points that we'd want to promote.

Marketing Lead

Someone that decides and leads the charge of what's going to get posted where and when. Able to provide the community with resources that are created and primarily tasked with having a strategy as to whom to target and with what etc.

Creative Lead(Visual)

Someone in charge of visual branding, aesthetics and consistency. (I'd be willing to fill this role if no one better suited is interested) Primary role would be establishing the style of the visuals, recruiting community assistance on the design front and keeping that visual messaging consistent through providing guidelines to others. Would need to work with tech lead to consolidate the message.

Creative Lead(Writing)

Basically the same thing as the visual creative lead only with the writing aspect for articles, blog posts, or whatever other written forms of content that would be generated. Would also work closely with tech and visual creative lead to have a consistent and consolidated message.

As @edje suggested I think the best idea would be to organize this in a discord, start with these roles and let everything else trickle down from there.

I think that changing our profile picture on facebook for the day to the steemit logo would be a good idea as this would reach a good crowd of people. When something big happens we all change our facebook profile picture to show support, so that is an option for a day.
I also think that if we are out promoing steemit on the street we need someone who can give us 20 free accounts each so we can hand them out to people, I have bought them in the past for people who have come to steemit, But right now all my funds are tide up and I can't afford to do that.
But if we are armed with a tablet or an ipad, and 20 free accounts to hand out to people who join there and then I think that would be a great thing to bring people to steemit.
The best people to talk to about all this is @starkerz and @stephenkendal they have been working on promoing for a long time now and they have got plans for this place :D

If you change “Steemit” to “Steem” I think it is a great idea.

Regarding the signups, it is a legitimate problem to be trying to solve, but probably more focused on the “blogging” side.

@artonmysleeve @timcliff, love this idea of changing FB profile pic to STEEM logo. Why not do it for all social media profiles and even go further with email accounts and mobile chat apps like Whatsapp.

We can put pumper stickers on cars, backpacks, bus stops(I won’t do this but some might). I would even ask my favorite lunch struck to put a sticker near the ordering window. Make t-shits and hats to wear it at events.

I know we need to get people to invest in steem, to make the price go up that is a great point, but the steemit platform sells it for me, if I was to tell people to buy a token, and they asked what for then what do I say?
I like to think that steemit as a social media platform is the best way to get people to invest in steem its self, If I had the money right now I would buy while cheap, as it is a great time to do so.

While I am talking with you, do you know who the first person to post on steemit was? and do you know what it was about? I am interested in seeing who it was and how far they have come on the platform.

I've tried promoting Steem and Steemit across various other sites, but people just seem sceptical. Maybe it just seems too good to be true, but we know it does work. I can show them the guitar I bought with what I made here. What angles do we need to work on?

I think that you mean well and it is a project with good intentions but it is hard to pitch STEEM to investors for a lot of reasons. I like that you did mention that there were problems with STEEM. The issues mount up so much that it is hard to pitch it to people.

What are we pitching? Is it a social media platform? Because the quality of the content almost has no correlation to the rewards. That becomes a big issue and confuses the hell out of people.

Investors can't really come in and be Witnesses. Those spots are already taken up by the chosen elite and there is very little movement there. Most Witnesses aren't even working on STEEM or have anything to do with it. When I look at an account like @furion he is just working on other projects but stacking up STEEM Power by the hour and then delegating that power to upvote bots to earn more.

It is like "give me the rewards so you can buy my vote"

Similar type stuff is going on with a lot of Witnesses. And guess what...... they aren't going to get bumped out and most of us can't consider running witness and seed nodes because we aren't part of the oligarchy "club".

Do we pitch investors on the idea of coming in and running more upvote bots?

I have voiced a lot of these issues and solutions of how to fix them but of course everyone in power pays no attention because why not just keep collecting large rewards.

Greed overtakes the chosen ones and then they just circle jerk this place into a slimy weird pump and dump place.

All that being said I do agree that functionally STEEM is light years ahead of even EOS because of all the man hours that have went into development of Steemit.com and the 3rd party interfaces. It is a very hard task to accomplish and the community here is something very special but a lot of us have been seeing the future for the last two years but so many of the issues from the beginning haven't been addressed and a lot of the stuff that needs addressed isn't in the best interest of those in power.

Those in power will seek to remain in power.

There are reasons why STEEM is in #36 spot. The market has spoken and the people are unwilling to have real conversations of how to fix this place for a sustainable future. Guys like me are just looked upon as "negative"

I would really like to see the problems here addressed, see this place thrive, and feel good about promoting it to others.

That is a cop-out if you asked me. Myself, @followbtcnews, and several others have made it into the top 20 by doing positive work for the platform. Other witnesses who are unable to make it into the top 20 and look to blame external forces are probably not contributing enough (or promoting themselves in the right way) to attract the attention of key stakeholders.

Well, there is a lot of complaining in what you say with little "solution oriented" discussion. In my view many of the problems that we have are solvable, and I'm doing what I can (as are others) to try and improve things.

As far as investors, a good investor should be able to see past the issues we have today into what the platform can become in the future. Back when STEEM was around $0.08-$0.10 there were very few people who could see past all the shit that was going on and believe that the platform could actually improve. Fast-forward to today, we still have problems - but there are less (many have been addressed or improved) and STEEM is worth a lot more.

It being a cop-out is a fair assumption. I will give you that. I have even asked myself if I was making up excuses about the situation but I have weighed the risk vs reward many times and even set up a witness node for VICE but those jack offs had no clue what was going on and their docker images were garbage so they wasted my time and money and I got sick of their excuses and peaced out. I thought if I got in early and provided support when things weren't looking very good it could workout for me there but that project is an incompetent mess.

I have voiced solutions many times. I even had very detailed comments posted on @lukestokes Witness Report a couple of days ago.

Most Witnesses don't like my solutions because if vote decay and any sort of situation where they are rotated out of tops slots for periods of time they aren't going to like because they would be giving up a consistent flow of money even if they aren't doing much of anything.

There is no way you can dispute that accounts like @freedom had a serious impact on who the top Witnesses were and eventually when a Witness collects enough power success proceeds itself. Then witnesses can group up and collude and pat each other on the back because now they are all "experienced."

@lukestokes felt that having the conversation of asking why certain witnesses are being voted for so I asked him why he is voting for @furion . I just am not seeing what value @furion is adding to the STEEM blockchain at this point. I haven't received any kind of answer for that.

At the end of the day once most Witnesses are in a position of power they don't want to rock the boat too much in fear of losing their position. It is human nature to not try to solve the tough problems or speak out against issues going on if they are getting paid day after day. They just shut their mouth and keep collecting from their magic money machine.

When STEEM death spiraled to $0.08-$0.10 it was looking terrible and I personally was giving the platform about a 20% chance of survival. Fast forward to today and I feel like we are dealing with some of the same issues and in some ways things have gotten worse. I feel like some of the problems have just manifested themselves in different ways.

I could hunker down and set up a witness and a seed node but it would almost for sure be 99.99% chance at unprofitably despite the fact that I have the technical knowledge to do so, have been here for 2+ years and have over 10,000 post/comments on this platform. Half my blog would turn into a Witness campaign and at the end of the day I would waste money and be pissed off because a bunch of basement dwellers with their ninja mine stake won't vote for me.

I saw your detailed follow up comment and appreciate it, but I haven't replied yet do to other commitments. @furion is on the bubble for me (if you check my voting history you may see I have removed him and and added him at various times), but I still think his conductor tool is still adding value to the witness ecosystem, and I greatly appreciate it. My hope is he'll continue to add value here, but that will only happen if he's incentivized to do so.

I'm surprised your opinion of success for the Steem platform is so influenced by token price. When I bought in at $3 and $4 and watched it go to $0.07, I didn't feel differently about the value of the technology. Being a good witness has more to do with just understanding Steem (IMO), but also STEEM and the larger cryptocurrency ecosystem. Emphasizing the current token price is a poor way to evaluate the future value of a project.

If you want to run a witness account, then do it. Don't complain about what might happen. Do it and see what happens. Everyone takes a risk and puts them self out there. Some succeed and some don't. The point if witnessing isn't wealth redistribution, but it's a secure blockchain. If servers aren't being run securely and consistently, then yes, changes should be made. If they are, then changes are less about the blockchain and more about the individual and their expectations.

My opinion of the success of the STEEM platform is only partially influenced by the token price but that is a lot in part do to the fact that because the technology and what has been built here is in a lot of ways superior than anything else blockchain related including EOS. I believe that because of poor execution, poor distribution, and a range of other factors the price isn't as insulated to these large drops like it should be. The fact that there is an incentive to be VESTED should partially insulate from large drops but there has to be other revenue streams to support the price in my opinion.

When you bought at $3 and $4 and the price dropped to $0.07 you were more vocal about the mountain of issues here. Your situation has improved here and you are in the money so in some ways it may seem that things have improved but from a lot of people's perspective things haven't improved they have just changed. During that time I'm sure people saw you as a complainer and Steemit INC probably didn't like the criticism. I never thought you were a complainer. I thought the concerns were valid. Now I'm a complainer though because I'm bringing up concerns to those in power.

When I jump off cliffs I not only depth check but I usually will jump after someone else jumped and when I see them come up safely I try to land in the same spot they landed in to reduce my odds of getting hurt. Running Witness and Seed nodes can get expensive and when you are out of favor or not popular among the few with power then it is unlikely to be profitable. It can become a money and a time trap so I have to ask myself does it just make more sense to focus on masternodes where it mainly comes down to having the appropriate amount of coins or take some chance that will require other people's votes. I just have seen so many highly skilled individuals who were great members of the community fail at the witness game and then ultimately devest their interest and leave. There is a reason for it. One example was this guy. https://steemit.com/@nonlinearone Had a Phd, was super knowledgeable about blockchain, was always positive but in the end he wasn't part of the club so these people leave one after another.

A person could certainly go broke campaigning when they could have focused their money and effort on other opportunities. There have been many times when I have thought about completely devesting my interest in STEEM and to stop posting here to protect my time and energy. I'm just a really stubborn person so I have a hard time quitting even when I should.

I personally don't think that the incentives are inline to make the changes this platform will need to really succeed so it is more about learning from what I perceive to be the pitfalls of this platform. That only serves me if I can join a team building another platform or if I can get the funding to build my own platform. Otherwise it is a waste of time.

Even if I thought there was a 30% chance that I could even get in the top 40 on the witness votes I would go for it but I feel the odds are much lower than that.

I think you may be misremembering your timeline. When I was raising issues the price was much higher. I'm happy to say the issues I was mostly concerned about have been largely resolved. The website is much more stable, Steemit, inc is communicating weekly about their efforts, and they are actively using the blockchain directly to do so. I didn't just complain, I gave solid recommendations, and I'm glad to say it seems they are following them. I also met the actual team and bridged the gap between my perception and reality. Negatively destroys teams and communities. Your suggestions so far don't seem very compelling to me, but I'm certainly open to hearing more.

When I look at accounts like @nonlinearone, I just see a lot of resteems and not much engagement (and clearly no commitment to the platform). Commitment is what matters. People want to support those who are still here and aren't threatening to leave if they don't get their expectations met.

I don't feel like I'm misremembering the timeline. It was sort of two separate instances. Late 2016 and 2017 you were certainly calling for more communication and calling into question why @ned and @dan were powering down and cashing out with no answer and you used the example of how as a business owner you mainly reinvested back into your business in the early years. Which I agreed with this and was questioning the lack of communication myself. It looked like a money grab.

In the second instance was shortly before Steemfest 2 where issues with the website were called into question and you wrote a post about eating your own dog food. Essentially utilizing your own software products internally or something of that nature. It was another good write up and then I do remember you meeting with the team at Steemfest 2.

So I consider some of the instances as two separate times spans that were about 8 months apart.

I feel like my ideas about the issues with STEEM and Steemit are pretty well thought out and I have really studied the success and failures of other social platforms.

In Sydney I had in depth conversations with two Block One employees about some of the positives and negatives of what has occurred with the STEEM blockchain and how those issues could be addressed. They both were very receptive to what I was saying and it correlated with their experiences on this platform.

I'm not being negative. We have some great examples on here of what has worked and what hasn't and in the end I feel like the platform that will end up working the best will be one that combines elements we see on Busy.org, Steemit, DTube, and DLive.

You would have to go back to 2016 for an account like @nonlinearone He set up a Witness node and was giving speaches about Blockchain tech in Phoenix and in Vegas and different places. He was pretty engaged. More recently he took a step back and powered everything down.

There are countless examples of this. We can't chalk everyone up who left as them being quitters or complainers.

Why did @daxon quit posting here but posts almost everyday on Instagram? Why did @mynameisbrian quit posting and power down his account? These are questions we have to ask ourselves. We can't just chalk all the attrition to people just being flaky quiter / complainer people.

As far as your last statement about people wanting to support those who are still here and aren't threatening to leave if they don't get their expectations met. Well it doesn't really seem to play out that way a lot of times. Is it supportive to people to just delegate their power to an upvote bot so that others can buy their vote?

A lot of these content creators that were fortunate enough to have solid support like @allasyummyfood have turned to that model. A lot of the witnesses and large whale accounts have very little curation engagement as well.

Hey Tim! This is an awesome initiative. And I agree Steem is definitely undervalued and should be in the top 10. Here are a few of my thoughts, why would everyday Facebook users want to get involved with Steem? Because they can earn money doing what they already do. But there is still a stigma out there with cryptocurrency, so we need to somehow eradicate that stigma, which in time I think that will happen. But for now, since I am a video guy and YouTuber, my part could be making a special video about it and sharing it all over the place. I think we initially only think about Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. as places to share our videos. But there are sooo many other places where we can share videos about Steemit and Steem! And we should definitely talk about having fun while investing. Something for everyone with Steem. That could be a cool slogan haha. Anyways love the initiative man, and I will do whatever I can to help promote Steem.

Reading through this melted my heart. Although it took long enough to get to this point, I am finally glad that we are here. I remember sometimes when I'll chat you up about the promotional events which we've anchored (steemit in Nigeria 1 and now steemit in Nigeria 2 scheduled for this year) and how supportive you've been.

The truth is that we need to promote steem and onboard users as well as investors. Investors will come with a large and stable user base and the large user base will come when they have something to look forward to.

The truth is I believe in steem and I know we will get there, however, we need to encourage those actually promoting steem. Take for instance, Steem(it) in Nigeria 2 event is around the corner, no support from steemit inc. yet, but we're pushing it and this is supposed to be the biggest crypto event in Nigeria and it's all about steem, yet no support from them, how does that look as a confidence boost? I know how many times you've supported our efforts in the past as well as @donkeypong, @ausbitbank and some others.

Right now, I and my team are in Abuja, spending our money to try and put things in place for the event. I have spent my hard earned savings on this (check blockchain records) but no support from steemit inc and we're promoting steem. This doesn't stop us because we love steem and we're doing our part towards the growth of the blockchain.

As for pump group mentioned by @liberosist, I think I have also heard about them but no "concrete" evidence to back up their existence.

I do the share this steemit thing everyday from my lyft drivers to co-workers and social media. Have held a meetup in Manila where I gave a 4' steemit banner away and plan to hold more meetups across the U.S..
Also look at my last few posts, I give some steemit info interesting for investors.
