Frederiksted, St. Croix with Market Friday

in Market Fridaylast year (edited)

IMG_2744 cruise 2023.JPG

Welcome to the beautiful island of St. Croix! Located in the Eastern part of the Caribbean Sea, it is the largest of all the islands that make up the U.S. Virgin Islands. I was visiting Frederiksted, located on the eastern side of the island, which is walkable at 22 miles long and 7 miles wide. If you walk through town, it is very deceiving looking with seemingly neglected buildings, some abandoned and some just in a state of disrepair. Point your car toward the west and go towards the capital of Christiansted and you will be in the midst of Danish-style buildings. It is surprisingly deceptive.

IMG_2742 cruise 2023.JPG

I needed to buy a basket for holding a few items, so I thought I might go to the local mall while I was in Frederiksted, and although some of the stores had closed during covid, I was sure I could find what I needed. I found the Mall to be a few stores, but, more like a strip mall that everyone walks to and it is also bolstered by independent markets set up in the peripherals. To the right of that center walkway are stores, mostly selling clothing and shoes, to the left are local to the neighborhood, selling different goods that always change, depending on what the need is.

IMG_2747 cruise 2023.JPG

It surprises me, the beauty of the calm. So very low-key. All is calm, all is bright. I embrace it willingly. How could you want it any differently? I notice that they slow down and enjoy each thing they are doing. Pick what is important. I find I am doing a little less multi-task and more tasks at a time. Not because I am incapable, but, because it allows me to enjoy it more. No rush, unless there is a need. I have made a point of not letting technology own me. Some days, you just need to step back a bit. Then, just breathe. Slowly and deliberately.

IMG_2908 cruise 2023.JPG

Well done. I love street art, and I was happy to see that some are funded by a beautification grant through the St. Croix Foundation. One of the projects was called No Wall Left Behind, a fun project to boost the morale of people a few years back. I think it is working, The Historic section is looking better every time I see it. Walkers get to enjoy the art organizations and many local artists that are involved in adding pops of beauty throughout St. Croix.

IMG_2733 cruise 2023.JPG

In the next sidewalk down from the mural was another surprise. Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett represents the United States Virgin Islands' at-large Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives.

The number of voting representatives in the House is fixed by law at no more than 435, proportionally representing the population of the 50 states. Currently, there are five delegates representing the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Found on Plaskett.Gov.com

IMG_2725 cruise 2023.JPG

The Fort Frederik Museum: P488+3HW, Frederiksted, St Croix 00840, U.S. Virgin Islands. The cost to get in is $5.00 Typical build for the area. Fort Frederik, also known as Frederiksfort, is a U.S. National Historic Landmark in Frederiksted, United States Virgin Islands. It was built between 1752 and 1760 by Denmark-Norway to defend the economic interests of the natural deep water port of Frederiksted and to ward off pirates. The museum has great information but they don't keep up the displays. That said, it has a lot of pictures of generals and information about interaction with Columbus. It was definitely worth the time. We did a self-guided tour.

IMG_2882 cruise 2023.JPG

Moving on, we visited a park that had different markets set up. Pick your place and good luck! The entire historic section of the town had little markets all over the place, selling everything imaginable. I would never want anything and most importantly, the people were incredibly nice.

IMG_2902 cruise 2023.JPG

They are revitalizing the park and all around the area. Personally, I am in favor of it. The town has been trying to revitalize since the hurricane four years ago and Is still in the process of a big redo of the town. They are doing a great job.

IMG_2893 cruise 2023.JPG

What do you call the man on stilts? A moko jumbie (also known as "moko jumbi" or "mocko jumbie") is a stilts walker or dancer. "Moko" means healer in Central Africa and "jumbi", a West Indian term for a ghost or spirit that may have been derived from the Kongo language word zumbi. Interesting and I didn't get to download the little video of them dancing on the stilts, but, I will!

I was undecided about the basket, so I ought ones that I can use all summer at the markets and can also use in my post. another movie that I don't have to do all the understanding is good as long as you how busy everything is. Thank you!

It is a gorgeous day! There was so much to say and do, but, I was happy to get a post up. I'm ready for tomorrow. It was a gorgeous day and I got to play chess on the beach. Best moments of the day.

Wow you are doing winter right! All we have here in Virginia is cold and rain or rain and cold, take your choice!

Here I got in a little MF action.
https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@old-guy-photos/wow-it-has-been-a-while

I actually like winter. :) A volunteer was needed to go, and I am pretty agreeable. It is not bad at home, according to my kids, so I have no idea how you are getting so much rain. It hardly ever rains and if it does, it is usually night.

Did you bring this stuff to Virginia? Send it back!

Oh, you even did a Market! Thank you... appreciate you dropping the link!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Well of course you like winter from there. You are not freezing in it as we are in the 30s and the house is an igloo lol.😏

Well, you should be warmer today. It has been reported that it will be 50's today back home and pretty much close to that for the next week.

It's warming up, and sadly, there will probably be no snow again this year for me. Well, not really sad as we don't get pretty snow anymore, just a reminder that we aren't quite south. :) Okay, not really sad about that, just stating the fact.

Good morning from here! A bright and beautiful day! Not a great shot, but, it just swam right by me!

IMG_2947.JPG

We are about 35F right now...same exactly as it is in Michigan....complete with grey dome too as an additional bonus of feeling like I have never left home! Seeing as I will have to go back and forth, I dont feel the need to update my location for the weather coz its pretty much the same 😞

Wow! You moved to the wrong part of Virginia for sure! 😦

Are you headed back up pretty soon? I know you wanted to get back up for some party time! 🤡

We sure miss you here! I found a little boat with your name all over it! You would be the talk of the lake and you could live on it!!

IMG_3030.JPG

She is a beauty. I would love to have my name on it as long as your name is on the note 🤣 Yikes I cant imagine what it costs to fuel her up!

Wow, are you on a boat???

Thank you so much for your warn and wonderful words! This trip was, withoutva doubt, one of the most peaceful I have ever had. I can't explain as it wasn't the most exotic, but it is certainly one of the most perfect.Thank you for being part of #MarketFriday!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Lucky girl .. getting all the winter sun. But you deserve it:)

Awwwww! I selfishly volunteered for this! :)

Warm sun in the winter is like cheating, isn't it? Thank you so much for the love! ❤️

I'm not on much, but, sending you love right back!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Well you are keeping warm this Winter. Speking of rain and such, we've been having a lovely mix this year here on the Cape. We get a few days of rain in 40s and 50s, then a cold day with pretty snow, to look and dream upon, then the sun comes out warms up a couple days and rinse and repeat. This is how I really like our Winters.

Have fun and soak in all the sun and I love the light at that time of the year, all the vibrant blues, yellows and peachy reds. Seems a fun way to spend January @dswigle

I love the winter, but, I needed to be here, so it was an easy decision. Thank you so much for stopping by, Donna! @donnadavisart I hope your mother-in-law continues to improve and that you are having a wonderful winter.

It sounds just perfect!

Fresh snow is always so beatuiful!

I find I am doing a little less multi-task and more tasks at a time.

That's a good thing to do every now and then! Methinks you've earned it.

Those baskets are pretty epic! How many are you bringing home?

Every now and then, I make it be about me, I even volunteered to come this time. The baskets are stunning, all handmade with white palms and a variety of other natural materials. I am bringing one home. I love baskets like you love your gramophones. :)

Thanks for stopping and leaving your words!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Aaaaaahhhh! As I look out and curse the wet snow that I see through my foggy windows, I look at your post then realize it's not like this everywhere. I am living through you, to numb the pain of Canadian winter haha.

I can imagine the excitement of stepping into a paradise from a different paradise on the ocean. I have never thought about St. Croix but it turns out to be extremely interesting and beautiful.

I love the murals and the baskets. I think I need to get something like that, this summer. It beats cloth shopping bags. In fact if I went to the market with one of those, I think I could turn some heads around here.

Enjoy your unplugging from devices, except for checking in on us here. Looking forward to your next adventure!

Don't forget that it may very well be cold when I get home, late in February.

It is really incredible to walk out into the warm sunshine and know the day is yours to spend however you want. I know I am lucky to be able to do this. I feel very fortunate. Every single day.

St.Croix is a very secluded, almost private spot. It has many tourists, but not like the other islands. Big mistake. I was in the poorest town this day, the people were hit hard by a hurricane first, then covid. They will persevere. The other end of the island and the city part of this town are very well off and it shows.

I like the people here, friendly and accommodating. Also, peaceful. So very peaceful.

I am a basket lady. I love all kinds of baskets and handmade ones. They last forever and a unique.

I love to unplug. But, hopelessly addicted to Hive. :) Thanks for dropping by! Below: Dinner is a real affair, every night. ❤️

Nice selection of basket.
Last stop for Chinese New Year shopping at the industrial area. I didn't need any basket but the lady bought 6 snacks for for $10.

Snacks! I need one right now! I look forward to reading it.

#MarketFriday loves you!

You're welcome. Hope you get your snacks.

Did you buy the strapless blue and pink dress? I think it would look fabu on you.

You know it!! Everyone needs a nice little strapless dress, right? Actually, I wore my little black one tonight. It was a formal dinner and I haven't had an opportunity to wear this dress since I bought it. (I bought it right as covid started)

I hope everything is well with you! It has been a great day and I saw something I have never seen before today. I am putting it in the next post. I still smile when I think about it.

All is great here! Hold down the fort for me!

#MarketFriday loves you!

A formal dinner?? I suppose we'll be seeing photos of your plate before too long. LOL ! Can't wait !

All is well.... well.... whatever well looks like these days. I'm about to hold down the weekend. I hope something exciting happens... exciting in a good way that is. I hope you are still dancing the night away.

What a refreshing post! In all honesty...this was just what I needed.

I've been battling with my internet for the past two days. My internet has been incredibly slow...and frustrating.

Your post has been the perfect reminder to slow down and relax. We always tend to be in a rush, wanting to get everything done within a specific time limit.

But here we are...your post is a perfect reminder that we not only can, but we need to slow down and relax. Do what we can...what we have control over...and stop stressing about that which we have no control over. Life carries on. It's not the end of the world and tomorrow is another day... We just need to do the best we can.

Denise, your post was not just fun to read today, it was medicine to me...lol! Thank you!

You can find my post for this week here.

That is such a nice thing to say. My internet was terrible right before I left for a whole week, which was probably my computer too, but, it put me so far behind. Now I am not home, so I am not on much, but, I make a little time every day, late at night, so my time is my own. :)

It has been calm and warms my heart to slow down and enjoy the little things once again. I was getting too busy and this has just been perfect. Yes! Tomorrow is another day! For sure!

I send you greetings from the island of St. Lucia!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Love the old buildings painted in colour used for many years with dainty lattice work hanging off the roof revealing the period in which it was built.

Although I can't complain about the Spanish weather, right now it would be nice to find myself in the Caribbean :D Some cold wind came these days, the calm, warm vibe from your post would come in handy :)))

Some similar warmth I tried to catch at this place :))

Happy Friday and weekend, @dswigle 😇

I know exactly what you mean. I left nice weather (unseasonably so!) but the allure of the Caribbean is just magnetic. It attracts you without your knowledge. :)

I sent you some warm vibes, I hope you got them!!

Oh! A short vaca post?? How fun! Happy weekend to you! Thanks for being part of the challenge!

#MarketFriday loves you!

It really seems that Covid had some far reaching and long lasting impact on pretty much every part of the globe. I hope I can get to the Caribbean some day. My dad visited there when he was in the Navy. It looks like a really beautiful place. I think my wife had a cousin that live there, but they have since moved to Chicago, so visiting them is probably out of the question!

I love visiting the different parts of the Caribbean. Each island has its own culture and they are different and always interesting. There is no doubt there is a lot of poverty in different parts, but, most have a good attitude about life and don't let the little things get in the way of happiness.

I hope you do get down here, and I think you would love it, given your love for history and culture.

Thanks for stopping by! Below, I sent you some feral chickens and chicks. They roam freely around all the islands and many downtowns. I guess if you got hungry enough, they would make a great meal. They eat all the bugs, so they are a great asset! These are downtown right near the beach. :)

#MarketFriday loves you!

IMG_2657.JPG

That is cool that they just let the chickens roam like that. I was reading about a city a while ago that uses goats to graze on vacant lots to keep the blight down. It seems like a great idea!

They did that in Texas! I thought it was hilarious. :)

It also is a great idea the serves to wash both hands.

Almostvevery Caribbean island I have been to plus South America and Mexico has feral chickens. I agree with you! Great idea!

What a nice place to play chess! Wonderful day!

My entry for this week:
https://ecency.com/hive-196308/@tatdt/market-friday-ice-rink-in-new-holland

It is a great place. Many of the seasides (and in the town near the markets) have chessboards made of marble. For durability. We have some in the bigger cities (in the States) and people use them in the summers. I play with different people all the time.

It is a great meat and greeter activity! :)

Thanks for dropping the link!

Hello dear Denise ! Thank you for this beautiful tour on this island of St Croix, God, all these colors are beautiful and I can imagine the parallel between them and the emotions and feelings of the people who live there !

It warms up all the more as it's starting to get quite cold here ^^ And even if it's probably less 'rich' economically speaking, the people seem to me to be happier and richer at heart !

No, I didn't forget the link this time, I just posted it before I went to sleep :D

Thanks you again for this warm discover, I wish you very enjoyable weekend 😘

I’m not talking about problems in life, more about the general difficulty to share things, food, help, good moments without other intentions than being generous !

Oh, that depends on one's personality :)

Of course, but in the global picture, it's unfortunately what I can observe, but change may be on it's way.. 🤞

Have a nice week ahead !

The people in the Caribbean are laid back, warm and wonderful. They have a different outlook on life. They have less in materials goods but so much nore freedom to be who they want. I love how carefree they are.

On the opposite end of it all is that there is poverty here also, and people don't seem to worry about it like they do back home. They are still happier than most, despite that. I have to admire their outlook.

I will be around the Caribbean until almost the end of February. Thanks so much for being part of the challenge! You remembered the link! :)

Maybe richer countries need to look at creating solutions where the poor are able to truly thrive - even those unable to have a traditional job.

Yes, that's what it feels like and indeed that's what I've noticed about people who live on islands. A good lesson for us big city people haha ^^ !

slowing down is a very wise choice in this age of technology and speed. this helps to reduce stress levels. I wish I could remember this more often! 😀 I love being with you in the Caribbean. it's a completely different world. What are these baskets made of? beautiful street art is a real decoration and a special charm. I wrote my post a bit late but I still don't want to miss this week. link to my post: https://ecency.com/hive-196308/@tali72/souvenir-shop-at-the-national

Thank you for always joining! ❤️

I have to agree with you. The Caribbean has its own vibe and completely different than how I live. It is a clam, warm, wonderful world. I think you would like it here.

The baskets are made of palms, reeds and various other type of materials to weave. They are quite strong! I am glad you didn't miss!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I like these baskets made of natural materials. I wonder if it's too expensive? thank you dear!

The dark blue and white basket was the equivalent of $24.00 US the colorful one next tonit, $28.00 and the plain one up front is $48.00 all great buys for the work involved.

thanks! these baskets are very cute but the price is pretty high. it seems to me that the inhabitants of the island themselves would hardly have bought them at such a high price. but of course the price is designed for tourists and I don't know what the material level of the islanders is.

I'll have a look at your post :) I agree, we really do need to learn how to slow down 😲

What's beautiful there in the Caribbean at first sight? All the whole environment gives me such a great feeling, and how fun is it there to play chess while visiting the beach? I can see and feel how it's so peaceful and relaxing with all kinds of this stuff. It's really great to watch this challenge. Happy Friday, my dear.🤗

The vibe is peaceful and it gives me a good feeling too. Chess on the beach is fun, they have many places to play chess on different islands.

I thank you for stopping by and leaving your words.

Oh I love #MarketFriday too ! 🤗

Hello :) This looks like a great day out where there is a lot to see and do. I like when cities invest in looking good, after all, that attracts visitors and commerce in the area is mobilized. I hope you've had a great day.

Here I leave my publication today, I hope you like it :) ❤️

I like when cities invest in themselves also. No only is it great for looking good and attracting people, but, it also makes YOU feel good to live in such a nice-looking city.

I needed to buy a basket for holding a few items, so I thought I might go to the local mall while I was in Frederiksted, and although some of the stores had closed during covid, I was sure I could find what I needed.

That's what made me think you were referring to an older vacation ♥️

I hope you continue to have a wonderful time 🙌
