A clip or magazine: Demonstration video (by me)

The noblest pleasure is the joy of understanding.

- Leonardo da Vinci -

Watching movies with me is usually enjoyable but when the movie has guns or military stuff in it...maybe not so much. You see, I understand guns and military things and it's abundantly clear that those who make movies [usually] do not. There's exceptions of course, some really excellent and realistic movies that depict the aspects I mention above accurately, but they are few and far between.

So, I sit there watching and say things like:

"That wouldn't happen."
"Umm...nope, not even close to how it is."
"Who even says that?"
"Where's the recoil?"
"Seriously, you only had three bullets in a gun that holds 19?"
"You have 37 bullets in a handgun that only holds 17?"

I think you get the idea. It can be frustrating watching movies that just don't get it right, and probably frustrating for the person sitting there with me having to listen to my scoffing, derision, laughter and scorn dished out to those nutbags on the screen and the nutbags who made the movie and didn't get it right.

One of my pet hates I didn't mention above and is the focus of this post today...The misuse of the term clip.

I'm sure you've heard someone in a movie or TV show say, I've only got one clip left, throw me another! His mate throws over a magazine and the scene keeps going. Dick heads.

Below you can see what is generally referred to as a clip and a magazine. The clip is the thing that holds the row of .303 rifle rounds and the magazine is the container [for lack of a better word] that holds the rounds inside it. The magazine is inserted into the rifle and stays there and the clip is used to load the rounds into the rifle and is then discarded.

20220515_123809-COLLAGE.jpg

The video below is me demonstrating the use of each with the first showing me loading rounds into both the clip and the magazine and the second showing how the clip is used when operating the rifle. Not all rifles have a clip-feed method of loading and not all rifles or handguns have removable magazines. To keep this post short, and digestible, I've not gotten technical but these two videos clearly demonstrate the difference between a clip and a magazine.

You will note in the video above that the clip and magazine hold the rounds differently. The clip is designed simply to hold the rounds and make it easy and fast to load them into the rifle when needed as they slide right in. Some pressure is required, but it's generally quite easy. You'll note the five round capacity on this particular clip also.

The magazine has a ten round capacity and is fitted up into the rifle so, with each shot and cycle of the bolt, a spent case is ejected and a new round pushed up and into the chamber. Magazines are reusable, as are clips, although due to the small nature of clips they are often lost. Also, in combat one doesn't go around dropping expended magazines then collecting them, nor does one care too much about what happens when the clip is emptied as it is a very cheap, mass-produced item...And when being shot at there's other things to worry about.

Generally clips are not used these days. One would typically have multiple magazines, all loaded, and swap them out as required. Having said that, I know people who still use clips when hunting as it's a legitimate method of storing rounds in a convenient way and loading quickly.

As you can see in the video I made above both are reasonably easy items to use and just about as fast as each other to operate. Of course, the clip in this video only loads five rounds to the magazine's ten. Please also keep in mind this is a rifle from the First World War, [decommissioned in 1918] and is not in use in modern militaries today. There's better systems now, although you can see the effectiveness of this magazine or clip system pretty clearly I guess.

Anyway, that's about it...The basic differences between a clip and a magazine. I've purposely not gotten too technical in this post as there's little need to do so, it's not a training document, but now you should know enough about clips and magazines to sit and watch movies and TV shows and call them out for their nutbaggery when they get it wrong!

That's about it. if you have any questions or comments please feel free to ask in the comments section below.

Sort:

in short: clips hold ammunition. Magazines feed ammuntion. Clips may be used to fill a magazine directly (en bloc) serving as the magazine feed lips until empty, or they may indirectly feed magazines (stripper clips) before being discarded. Moon clips are a special case for rimless cartridges in revolvers. I have one half-moon clip in .45 ACP somewhere.

If only I said this...It would have saved me 800 words. 😁

I find watching stripper clip videos strangely soothing...although, not quite as soothing as emptying the rounds at the range or in the field.

I found my old post on the topic! It includes a pic of the moon clip.

And you replied to it!

Yeah, I see that...Just looked at it now. It was a god post, worth looking at twice. Now, if only those people who make movies understood the difference.

Excellent, I'll have a look when I finish stuffing my face with this chocolate donut.

This I didn't know so I'm glad that I read this and watched the videos. Makes a lot of sense.

Hahaha I would love to hear your commentary on movies. Over 40 bullets in a mag? Ummm I know very little about guns but even I know that's BS.

 2 years ago (edited)

Yeah, people think they gain knowledge and wisdom from the movies and in truth, not. There's some magazines that may carry many rounds, but not one's a cop would have as an issued sidearm. You know?

As for my side-commentary during movies...It's bloody annoying for others, I'm sure. And to add to my nutbaggery, I hate people talking when I'm watching a movie. Other people than myself I mean. I really am a fucken knucklehead huh? 😁

(In my defence, I don't do it at the cinema. It's a home thing. Usually. I've been known to utter a snort of derision in a movie theatre. I most often get punched for it though.)

The only movies I think are worthy of using for teaching this kind of stuff are documentaries and even they are sometimes inaccurate.

That must be funny to watch. One sided maybe but funny nonetheless. We're all a bit knuckledeaded in different ways. I used to talk a LOT during movies but now LL does that to me and it drives me freaking nuts. I think it's some form of payback for anyone I annoyed by talking while I was younger 🙃

Beautiful bolt action you got there 😉

Yeah, most of what I watch is docos, history, nature, architecture, how stuff is made. I watch movies though, and pick on them.

Oh you were an in-movie-talker? I should have figured. Well, you're getting your payback now Andy. if you ever watch a movie with me just remember to fucken zip it. (I, on the other hand, can talk - but only to scoff at the firearms nutbaggery.)

You know movies always use creative license for whatever they portray. Plenty of things are laughable and unbelievable even if you are not an expert on anything. I can see why you notice though.

"That wouldn't happen."
"Umm...nope, not even close to how it is."
"Who even says that?"
"Where's the recoil?"
"Seriously, you only had three bullets in a gun that holds 19?"
"You have 37 bullets in a handgun that only holds 17?"

THAT made me laugh !

When you said you were going to do a video demonstration, I thought Oh ! Now we'll hear what the G-dog sounds like.... but no. It was still a clearly understandable demonstration.

Yeah, movies would be rather boring if they stayed too close to reality. War movies would consist of a lot of lifting and moving things, sleeping wherever and whenever they can, bad food, gearing up for ops then standing down at the last minute and officers with no clue.

I'm glad you got a laugh from my movie dialogues. The even funnier thing is that I'm not even joking. I say those things and more.

I thought Oh ! Now we'll hear what the G-dog sounds like

I was thinking of doing a book reading on video Jace, it's still on the cards. I wrote a book called, Days of the week and was thinking of reading some for a Hive post. What do you think? Should I?

Of course you should !

It may be a hit ! You'll never know till you try it....right ?

This is true...I might have to get it done. It could be good for a laugh.

Laughing is good for your health, so if you make us all laugh, you'll be doing us a favor all the same. 🙂

I don't mind people laughing at me, it's a sign of personal strength to have that ability and one I value in others, so assume others value it in me. I'll make it happen and you can hear my Australian accent. I sound nothing like Crocodile Dundee or Steve Erwin, but I can put it on if I have to.

Mmmm...the random things I learn on a Sunday, and the beauty of Hive. You never know what's going to come up in your feed. Interesting to know, even though I think (hope) I won't ever need to put in practical use

I understand, it's not something most firearms users would ever use either, only the one's with particular firearms, like me. It's interesting though right? That rifle helped win World War One. It's kind of cool for me to have it, as a massive history guy.

Thank you for commenting on this post despite it probably not being your thing...And yes, I agree with your comment on Hive.

it never hurts to learn about more random stuff, you never know when it's going to come in handy at the pub quiz!

The historical side of the gun is really interesting and the fact you own one is even more amazing. I'm sure my 10 old great nephew would be fascinated about it, he's a massive history buff and loves anything to do with the wars. His mum said he could answer the history exam papers set for the 16 year olds.

I like your nephew already! He sounds like another 10 year old I once knew who was a cute, but intense little brownish boy who grew up to be less cute, but just as brownish. (Me). Lol.

One major grey area is my M1 Garand, it uses clips inserted into the rifle directly. The M14 is basically an M1 with a box magazine added. Both are fine weapons, and when used by a trained operator; can sling comparable amounts of lead downrange. They are both excellent battle rifles, and we should have kept the M14 over the M16.

👍🤠🤕😡😳

The M1 is a splendid example of a firearm done right. I've not had a lot of experience with them but those experiences I've had have been enjoyable. They have proven their worth time and again.

I'll have one of each ready, when you come to visit, ROFLOL!

The finest battle rifle ever on the M1, time on target is extreme. It bumps, and drops right back on target for a fast second shot! It is also perfect for use with a bayonet, providing 4 attack options with one move.

I kind of discounted the M1 before I got one. She really convinced me....

👍💙😁🤠💗

Sometimes things surprise us, as with the M1, and I think it's good to be proven wrong sometimes as well. Keeps us humble. 😉

I have to be humble, I'm married, LOL!

But the M1 did Surprise me, and make me smile. An excellent rifle!

👍💗🤠

Lol...Humility is a strength.

Keeps me from getting knuckle bumps on my noggin! I have to be good, she has a pistol; and I taught her to shoot....

👍🤠😳😆💗🙏

It ain't rocket science is it 😃. The term Magazine was used for any item or even place that stored ammunition or explosives. In my hometown of Leicester there's a building which still stands that though originally built as a gateway was used to serve that very purpose during the english civil war and stored munitions and is known as The Magazine and the pub nearby that was our local for many years was called...yup you guessed it The Magazine. Sadly been pulled down now but was a great boozer

I think most just don't understand the term and how it applies from a firearms or military perspective, especially the fact, as you say, that a building can indeed be a magazine. It's not a new term, it's been around for a long time. I guess most are just clueless through ignorance or choice.

The clip/magazine thing comes from the movies though, and is sheer nutbaggery.

nutbaggery nice one, I can add that to my verbal arsenal ( see what I did there) and interchange that for bellendery.

Bellend is not a popular term here, but I use it often. 😆

It sums some people up to perfection

I think video games do a better job with guns compared to movies. 😂

Possibly, but even then it provides no practical understanding. The only way to gain that is with specific research and training, then practical experience.

In recruit school (these days) they do some of the training on rifles in an indoor range, using computers to determine accuracy, but that alone can never provide enough understanding to prepare one for actual operation body a firearm.

In real life the experience is on a different level, no second chances, no room for mistakes.

But when it comes to video games, mostly the first person shooter genre, they at least do their research and try their best to be accurate. Whether it be the sound of a certain gun, its ammo capacity or fire-rate, most of it surely seems fairly accurate when I compare it all to an actual real life demonstrations on YouTube.

Whether it be the sound of a certain gun,

You ever fired real guns? I recently took @mattclarke and his son shooting and the first comment was, wow, that was way louder than I expected. You can't gain an impression of the violence and noise of firing a gun without actually firing it. YouTube isn't a good substitute. You'll have to trust me on that, or go shoot some guns.

Just as an example. If you shot my culling rifle without ear protection you'd have ringing ears for an hour and be unable to hear me talk.

You ever fired real guns?

I've shot an air rifle quite a few times, belonged to my father, but I know those things are nothing. Handled a few pistols and shotguns, but never really got the chance to shoot.

YouTube isn't a good substitute. You'll have to trust me on that, or go shoot some guns.

I know, but just visually from playing the game and from the audio, most of it seemed accurate enough when comparing.

In real life the punch is way too much to handle for a newb, whether it be the ear-shattering sound or the heavy recoil. I understand that it's surely not as easy as it looks, and without guidance and protection? Well, that just a bad idea.

Computer games are surprisingly realistic these days, I understand. It leads people to feel they have more understanding than they actually have. Perception, not reality.

Have you served in the military before?

I have zero knowledge about guns even to I play games and I would hesitate to choose a gun with lots of rounds so that I don't shoot while reloading.
I guess movie producers should try to be more technical, it would be great having someone like you on a set that has to do with guns.

Most people have no idea about guns, those that play computer games included. All movie sets have armorers and advisers to ensure accuracy, but for some reason still get it wrong. Like, in a gun fight there never seems to be any reloading and yet they just keep shooting. I once counted over forty shots without a reload from a handgun that holds 17 with a standard magazine which is what it had in it. Weirdos.

Thanks for your comments.

Lolz, lots of movies today are very far from reality.

Most are, yes. There's a few that stay true to reality. I'm just really critical as there's so many dumb things that happen around firearms on movies.

You need to have a look at the YouTube channel C&Rsenal great resource for WW1 small arms they have some great history on the long Lees and the SMLE as well as just about small arms from every country involved in the Great War

I've seen it once or twice, they have showcased some interesting firearms. I have a library full of books though and prefer books to watching videos. I've studied war history from the age of ten. I'm not as much into reading about guns as I am about owning and operating them and tend only to delve deeply into those I either own or have had to operate from time to time. That's not to say I don't research them though.

Thanks for commenting.

I discovered it during lockdown in the Philippines. I’ve found it fascinating. Owning guns in the UK is a little difficult.

Yeah, I know you folks have it a bit rough in the UK. It's a good channel mate, no doubt.

Y'know, I knew the difference between a clip and a magazine, but I've never actually seen a clip used to load the magazine before. Being that I do not own a gun of any sort (bows are different - I have several), I get all my gun knowledge from TV and movies, just as you suggest. 😂 Seriously, that was interesting to watch.

Most will never see it, or get to operate it as I do, so that's why I did the video. I hope it was clearly shown. I like to represent firearms and shooting well so am happy to explain concepts like this in, hopefully, easy ways and language.

Skills with a bow are every bit as valuable as those I have Victor, but you know that.

Thanks for commenting.

"You have 37 bullets in a handgun that only holds 17?"

Ha! Now that's just Dumb lazy writing there XD

Not gonna lie to ya Galen... You're a low-key badass :-) Respect.

Now, I really don't know much about guns or military but after reading this very enlightening post, I think I've gotten a little insight into the ACTUAL functions of a Clip and Magazine.

Oh, and Jacob's comment was also a breath of fresh air with its summary 😂

Oh great! Now I WANT to watch a military movie with ya just to see your reaction. Ha! Maybe we could watch The Green Berets, I heard it was pretty inaccurate :)

Not gonna lie to ya Galen... You're a low-key badass

I'll own this description of me.

Oh, and Jacob's comment was also a breath of fresh air with its summary

@jacobtothe is an intelligent man, I'm a blunt instrument...So yes, his summary was good. Maybe I should get him to write all my posts.

Now I WANT to watch a military movie with ya

Trust me, it's annoying. I love that movie, The Green Berets but yes, it's not very true to life. It's always worth a look though. I like The Guns of Navarone also, and The Big Red One. Classics. Of course, the modern ones are awesome. I just watched Hacksaw Ridge again last weekend. If you have not seen it, do yourself a favour.

How well would you survive the US western and WW2 TV shows of the 1960s?

Lol...Indeed. I watch them though, and love them.

I used to watch one called The Rat Patrol. I would have been around 9 or 10 so late 1970's but the show as made around 1966. I loved it.

I'm not as critical as I made out in my post, although I certainly make those comments. It actually makes bd movies better to be honest as it gives me something to do, looking for mistakes and round-counting etc.

The Rat Patrol was the specific show I had in mind, although it's not the only one. The later Baa Baa Black Sheep also still rotates on the local digital TV broadcasts. Nearby Hayden, Idaho has a small airport named after Pappy Boyington. !LOL

Haha, an airport names after a TV character. That's gold!

Now I want to watch The Rat Patrol. I can remember thinking their Jeep with the 50 on thee top was the coolest thing ever. (Ok, I'll be honest, I still do.)

Pappy Boyington was a real person, and the show was just a heavily fictionalized narrative based incredibly loosely on his memoirs. He was born in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. That city basically merges seamlessly into Hayden, where Coeur d'Alene Airport/Pappy Boyington Field is located. One of the more interesting homeschool field trips I had was a flight in a kit plane from there before the renaming.

I'm in hospital because I drunk a cup of petrol.
That was a very fuelish thing to do.

Oh, please do.

Ouuu... Jacob seems like a visionary. However, no one could write quite like ya. Jacob would be missing that good old G-dog touch.

Oh, and from a scale of 1 to Rusted, just how blucny would you say you are? :-)

LoL, I don't know why I instinctively thought of serial killer Ted Bundy when I read Hacksaw ridge😂. But hell yeah, I just watched the trailer so i'm defs gonna watch it this weekend.
Thanks for the recommendation.

Hacksaw ridge is a good example of what a man with a compelling reason why can achieve. It's a true story, remember that when you watch it.

Also, on any scale, I'm 11/10.

Oh... You're already getting me hyped! I might even watch it today, if I have time. Sounds like my kinda movies.

Hmm... I'm not even surprised by the 11/10 score😂

Sometimes I'm -1/10 though.

This is fab - I love it when I learn something new! I've also learnt never to talk if we're watching a movie 🤣🤣

Thanks for sharing, @galenkp

Haha, yeah I was pretty clear about there being only one person who can make ridiculous comments when I'm watching movies huh? In truth I'm not that inflexible, it just added a fun element to my post I guess. 🤪

Glad to know I won't be banned if I do mutter the odd word, lol!
