Always first - Gymnocalycium Bruchii

in Succulent growers3 years ago (edited)

Out of all my Gymnocalycium cacti, this is always the very first one to bloom. The buds start to show when other cacti are still asleep and then open those pretty pink flowers. Shots taken today. The second bud didn't fully open yet but I didn't wanna miss it. The flowers do last a few days.

Gymnocalycium Bruchii

It skipped blooming last year. I suspect it is because I was repotting it to a bigger pot.
It could also be lack of proper winter rest. That I will never know. Some cacti bloom every year like a clock, some skip some years. But even though I didn't see any flowers it wasn't lazy. It used the season and more space to grow nicely and produce more ofshoots.

The cactus is native to Argentina and despite very delicate look, it is very tough and can withstand quite extreme conditions. In winter, if kept dry it can survive even -15 degrees C. In summer I keep it in rather sunny and hot spot and it is doing ok. It probably would like some more shady spot, but I don't have many of those.

You can see on the photos below that one side of the cactus is more yellow. It is the side that is exposed to direct sun. The other side is nice and green. Don't worry, it will be fine.

Lots of little babies. I kind of hope they will grow enough this year to start blooming inthe following season. That will be nice to look at. Multiple blooming green balls.

The cactus, despite it's age and multiple little heads is still very small. This is a 5x5 cm pot and I think only next year or in two years I will have to upgrade it.

This is a photo from March 2 years ago. See how small it was? It still bloomed though :)

Wow that is one industriuos cactus. Lovely flowers. Nice color too. We have a very small but growing cacti community in the garden but no blooms so far. Hope they will this year.
