Unter den Gästen der heutigen Jazz-Matinee, wird sich der Eine oder Andere möglicherweise fragen, wer wohl dieser Tony Allen sein mag, dem nicht nur eine komplette Matinee vorbehalten, sondern von den Musikern gefeiert wird?
Tony Allen (1940 - 2020), in Nigeria geboren, gilt nicht nur als der Erfinder des Afro-Beat im Jazz, sondern als einer der besten Schlagzeuger überhaupt. Es gibt nur ganz wenige dieser Ausnahmekönner, deren Spiel man bereits nach ein paar Takten zuzuordnen weiß.

Among the guests of today's jazz matinee, one or the other might be asking himself who this Tony Allen might be, to whom not only an entire matinee is reserved, but also celebrated by the musicians?
Tony Allen (1940 - 2020), born in Nigeria, is not only considered the inventor of Afro-beat in jazz, but also one of the best drummers ever. There are very few of these exceptional artists whose playing can be identified after just a few beats.

Der französische Akkordeonist François Xavier Bossard (Fixi), der mit Tony Allen seit 1997 gemeinsame musikalische Wege beschritt, beschreibt das Spiel von Allen so: „Er macht an vielen Stellen genau das Gegenteil von dem, was andere Schlagzeuger tun. Wenn er übt, dann ist es wie eine Meditation.“
Als Fixi Tony Allen kennenlernte, war dieser zwar in Afrika ein Begriff, doch in Europa kannte man ihn kaum. Dies änderte sich umgehend mit der Veröffentlichung des Albums “Lagos No Shaking”.

French accordionist François Xavier Bossard (Fixi), who has shared musical paths with Tony Allen since 1997, describes Allen's playing as follows: „In many places, he does exactly the opposite of what other drummers do. When he practices, it's like a meditation.“
When Fixi met Tony Allen, he was well known in Africa, but hardly in Europe. This changed immediately with the release of the album „Lagos No Shaking“.

Als der Zug auf den europäischen Jazz-Bühnen so richtig ins Rollen kam, sollte der Trompeter Nicolas Giraud die Formation mit seinem Spiel bereichern. So weit kam es jedoch nicht mehr, da Allen in Paris überraschend für alle starb.
Fixi und Giraud entschlackten mit dem Album “Tempo – Tempo” den typischen Afro-Beat, behielten jedoch den Rhythmus von Tony Allen in den Stücken bei.

When the train really started rolling on the European jazz stages, the trumpeter Nicolas Giraud was to enrich the formation with his playing. It didn't come to that, however, as Allen died unexpectedly for everyone in Paris.
With the album „Tempo - Tempo“, Fixi and Giraud stripped down the typical Afro-beat, but kept the rhythm of Tony Allen in the tracks.

Sie versuchten es, fast identisch dem Idol, dem diese Matinee gewidmet ist, mit einer Fusion aus Jazz, Worldmusik und Chanson. Teils instrumental, aber auch mit Gästen am Mikrofon.
Tempo - Tempo geht übrigens auf die regelmäßig vor den Konzerten von Tony Allen gehaltene Ansprach an seine Musiker zurück.
Alles geben und nur ja nicht nachlassen!
