Lately I've been a bit heavier than I'd like to be, I especially noticed this from photos of the traveling we did recently and it bugged me so often that I decided it'd be a good time to change things. I'm not someone to usually care about my health too much and really like postponing things or ignoring things but I guess it's gotten to the point where it can no longer be ignored.
Ever since we got back I've stopped drinking soda's and other sugary things aside from one or two coffee's per day which I can't drink without some milk and sugar. Even though it hasn't been many days of this no-soda diet I can already feel a bit better and clear-headed. I plan on keeping this up as I remember my metabolism wasn't bad in the past, I didn't really have to think about my weight much as it never really got that high. Then again I also used to workout/do sports here and there and with age who knows what's up with my metabolism now, but I reckon that with this diet alone I'm most likely going to start losing some weight.

That said I'm not planning on just doing this diet, else it would've probably been a much shorter post that could've fit better in Threads. The plan is to also start exercising every day starting with some walks and moving on to some faster walks and possibly also jogging once I hit my weight goal. The reason jogging is out of the question currently is cause I've always also had this thing with my shins and at my current weight of 100-110 I know they're going to not last long. The walking more often and for longer will definitely help get them warmed up, though, which then could allow me to start running again. This goal is quite far out so I'm mostly just thinking ahead at this point.
The only thing I got at my disposal at the moment is a place to walk and two dumbbells at around 15kg or so (I think, it's been so long I've touched them and for so little time I'd have to check again). This does give me quite a few options, though, and if things go according to plan I might get some more minimal equipment to work out at home. The idea would be to do some exercise at first to get warmed up such as walking (and I'm definitely going to get warmed up in the asian climate) to then finish things off with some body workout and weights. Maybe @theycallmedan can give me some pointers as well as I know he's done these transformations a few times in his life (and I think he's back at it again which is amazing to see).

While I really lack dedication compared to others, I'm thinking that posting about my progress, thoughts and possible feelings throughout it might help push me to at least do something compared to nothing. While I'm not going to provide you with any progress pictures I may muster up the courage to post some before and after pics if things go well though right now I wouldn't sit on the edge of my seat about them if I was you. :P
Another reason to exercise more is also that I remember it really helped me to clear my head and think of things from different angles in the past. I'm hoping that with all the projects and plans I have coming up for Hive this will help me out to think about things and plan ahead better when taking breaks off the screen.
I've got a good start towards my goals this time around, being in Bangkok for the majority of the time during my recent travels sure helped me drop down a few kilos from all the walking and exploring. I'm going to post some pictures from that here soon but also check out @hiddenblade's blog as she's going to do the same and her shots won't just be of cellphone ones but from an actual camera. :P
Anyway, wish me luck! I'll try to post about it now and then and try to also not lie to myself and everyone about how it's actually going. xD

I know what you mean about being clear-headed. Though we don’t normally hear sugar being referred to as a drug it truly is one. Being hooked on sugars through sodas, juice and sweets has been my lifelong battle. As soon as I limit my intake my mind feels so clear and light. My entire body feels light as well. It’s so so hard but definitely doable I know for sure.
So you drink two cups of coffee per day? I usually do one but have been giving it a break lately. I noticed I don’t enjoy it as much when I do it everyday non-stop. Once I take a couple days away from it seems I enjoy it even better. My husband has to have sugar and creamer with his. I’m trying to help him break away from adding sugar because the creamer is already sweetened enough.
I hope you reach your goals.
Cool man, great to see you striving for better fitness and thus better health. It's an expression as old as the hills, but you're health is your wealth. It's so true and easy to lose sight of.
I want to be around for my kids for as long as possible, so even though I enjoy a few beers, eat out quite a bit, I offset it with healthy eating and exercise.
The exercise piece is all about habit forming and accountability. It might take around 2 weeks to form that habit of say a 20 to 50 minute workout every day Mon to Thursday but soon it's engrained and then it is easier to maintain, that is my experience anyway.
The accountability piece will work great with Hive. Maybe pick 1 or 2 days when you post on your successes and in that post you can say what your commitments are for the next few days... say...
The next post can then say if you succeeded and if not why not..
On the healthy eating, well done on ditching the sodas. That is brilliant. Try drink loads of water instead and have a soda maybe once a week as a treat if eating out or whatever.
Interested to see what @theycallmedan has to say on this topic.
Best of luck with it bro.
Well, you took a huge and brave step... not just the first one, but announcing it out into the community! So big bonus points for that!
What you drink can actually make a huge difference. I have a heart condition and my doctor told me to lose weight "or else" and the biggest change I made was going to drinking about 90% water, instead of sweet drinks, juices, milk, beer, etc. I dropped about 15kg over 6 months without really doing a lot else different, other than minding my processed food intake.
Good luck with your efforts!
Good luck! :)
As someone who also struggles somewhat with willpower and making changes I've found that the following things have helped me to make big, important changes in my life:
Yeah I'm definitely building a roadmap here in which changes I'm making one at a time when I feel ready or the last change is the new norm. Great points!
Dudeee, nice. I've been drinking water, tea, coffee, for years now, dropping all energy/sugar drinks entirely. I don't even miss it, I've had a coke last week because I thought: ey, let's see if my teeth don't fall out after drinking it.
When I wanted to quit smoking (for the 3rd time lol), I told myself that I can smoke, but I first must do 10 push-ups. Kinda like punishing myself, but by rewarding myself in the long term. I used to do 50 push-ups straight, so I know I can do them, but when I started when I didn't move as much, even 10 were pretty hard.
Anddd ofc. last year I got pretty sick, and I just changed my eating habits, and lost 5KG in 3 months, by doing absolutely nothing, but stop eating bags of chips after dinner and started eating fatty fish once a week.
Don't worry too much about sharing stories to motivate you, it would be much easier to make a habit out of it (the hardest part to begin with, but easy once you get on a roll with it), things just slip in and become part of your daily habits.
You got this Acid!
Good for you and much good luck. Sounds like a good strategy to start out with regular walking to avoid injury. Regarding equipment, you could consider looking into adjustable dumbbells. I bought a set of those through the pandemic, and was quite happy with them. Regardless of equipment and type of activity, though, I guess staying consistent trumps everything.
I've fallen off my excercise plan too in the past year and it has definitely started showing (and like you describe, it never did before). So I'm actually just getting back on the horse myself. I'm glad you shared this.
I'd like to recommend a channel on YT called MindPumpShow. In short it's four different guys with loads of experience with training, discussing everything related to the subject. No sensational techniques or obnoxiousness, just informed discussion. Could be it's of inspiration to you too - defintely has been for me.
The only thing I don't like about adjustable dumbbells is that they often make quite some noise during usage, you can never get them properly "rooted" to not make noise. At least from previous personal experience.
Thanks, will take a look at that channel!
Ah. I may have gotten lucky with the set I have then, cause I never experiencd that. But I'll be the first to admit they're not nearly as satisfying to use as regular dumbbells - If I had the space it would be an easy choice.
I can't imagine spending more than 7 minutes in Bangkok without a damn good reason haha...
Your mind is going through exactly what mine is. I even wrote a blog about it already just haven't posted yet.
But basically, I've watched myself since I hit my 30's slowly balloon from 82 to 97kg. Be damned if I'm gonna hit 100 (given it's 97% fat and 1.5% muscle).
Exercise doesn't make you lose weight, just makes you live longer, and who needs that?? So I just did diet. Not eating a bar of chocolate is equal to like 2 hours of intense workouts.
And yeah, already lost 9kgs after just a couple of months of that. Not even trying that hard, really.
Trying to hit 84kg before England but... probably not that likely anymore. Gets harder to lose even a gram after a while.
Haha think I went from about 87 or so to 119 at max but currently I think under 110 since bangkok (will have to actually weigh myself but been saving it for the next post update). What's wrong with bangkok? (other than the heat)
I know it's like 85% diet but I do wanna be able to run again before the simulation ends as I kinda miss it. Back when I came out of the military I used to do 10-15km daily for fun, now I can't even run 15 meters.
My ultimate goal for my length would be under 90 but replacing fat with some muscles, but not too bulky as I still wanna be able to run, etc. Let's see how it goes, will most likely take another bull and bear market but maybe I can afford a personal trainer next bull to get me to my goal faster. xD
Welllll its not a slight on the place itself; I've been twice and enjoyed it although I was alone. I guess I've just aged out of it. It's a very... 'starter pack' meme-y Kinda place. At my age I need to be very single and alcoholic in order to fit in.
Damn, one of the top greatest feelings on my list of memories was spending a few weeks on a treadmill and transforming from getting absolute death lungs after 3 minutes jogging, to 30 minutes sprinting with a resting heart rate. Damn, if I could do 15km for fun, I'd have to concede that I'm a literal God
Ever since that experience (and the himalaya one), I maintain that exercise is one of the best things ever, despite not for weight loss.
I think many of us have been in the same position you are right now, I know I was a while back so I totally get it. The freaking ankles right? They're always the problem children 😆
You know that both subconsciously and consciously now by posting this, you've reinforced it which can only be a good thing and will serve to motivate you to keep at it. I also suffer from lack of discipline like that - I always try to find more motivating factors than there are possibilities for excuses to procrastinate. I'll go check on hiddenblade's page to see the photos from a "real camera" 😁
Good luck to You!
I've been doing same don't care about health and that postponing things.. change is lifestyle is necessary.. I tried couple of times but eventually went off to another track.
In my case, I wanna gain weight and muscles.. doin workout and all but lack dedication.. I'm sure you can do it and will becomes so much better.
What if, there's some sort of challenge on hive for like body transformation to encourage each other.
Good luck again and let us know how it goes and what challenges you face.
A challenge would be interesting, though it'd be a bit difficult to prove things without doxxing yourself with video footage, etc.
Oh, yea that's the only thing.
A bit of dedication and self-discipline, that´s all you need. No gym memberships, no personal trainers, no expensive equipment... I have been doing my workout outdoors for years. Jogging is free and so are all those places for calisthenics (some even with actual gym machines like this one that I´m using here in Prague). To lose weight, focus more on cardio. To get shredded, do more calisthenics. To gain muscle mass, start lifting... But the most important thing is to find your own way of doing these things so that you actually enjoy your trainings. Good luck :)
Good luck and continuation for those huge changes and goals ! Even I didn't eat any transformated and industrial foods since ever, I recently decided to go further, no more coffee at all, barely no gluten - damn, I don't feel angry anymore ^^ - and strict control of sugar and salt. Gosh that made a big change already and in parallel, I've launch myself in a daily training of 30 minutes of cardio and general fitness... This is interesting to observe as that, except walking a lot daily, I didn't use to practice a lot. I can recommend you some videos if you want ^^ !
Congratulation for this move, I hope (and I'm sure) you'll find even more power through this evolution ! Big up :D
Not sure if the app AllTrails has any trails in your country or close to you. It’s an app I’ve been using this year to find trails to walk/hike on.
I use it as one of my research methods for finding trails I want to go on. People can upload photos and trail data to it so you can see photos of the terrain, dangers, and things to keep in mind.
It’s also great for checking where you are on a trail if you get lost or want to work out how much further you might have. Along with showing how far you have gone and other data.
People are kind enough here to give a warning if they spotted bears recently or give trail updates as some of the areas are rather swampy and turn into thick mud if not dry. While others get shut down sometimes due to storm damage.
That's a great step you took. Also a courage to share it with others (and us).
I am up for supporting you morally and eventually also technically with everything concerning Yoga techniques to harmoniously stimulate the body, without stressing too much bones, articulations, and nerves.
I understand the feeling of getting worried about how heavy you are becoming, I do experience that once in a while and I always hit the road for some days and try jogging it out and try as much as possible to reduce my in-take of food and I have been keeping off soft drinks in a while, only take them occasionally.
I wish to have a treadmill someday in the future when I settle fully on my own.
All the best to you.
I tried the old intermittant fasting and it worked a treat. There is a free app called Fastic that gets you started. I would be fit enough and quite sporty but this app made me lose so weight I had to shed. Not for everyone as I know some people can't do without breakfast but I stop eating at 8pm at night. Skip breakfast and have my first bite to eat at 2pm which pretty much gets me on target. Coffee is OK provided you don't lace it with milk.
I should actually try it, I know I should be eating more frequently smaller amounts due to my gallbladder removal, and of course less fatty as well, all of things I've ignored the past few years. Maybe intermittent fasting could fit well there unless I remember it wrong.
Yeah its a nice handy way of doing it without changing your life all that much. I found that app really good. Best of luck with it anyway.
Best of luck.
I hope you will be able to reduce your weight more and bring it in a good shape. I was never concern about my health and weight but I naturally walk a lot and that helps me to maintain my weight in a standard range. Maintaining weight is a easy task for me but I think with age it get difficult to maintain. So I think it's not so easy for you but with consist effort you will reduce weight little by little and bring it perfect shape. You are more experienced tham me and you know better what to do🙂.
Yeah it used to be easy for me as well but I guess the age thing is making it harder this time around for it to go down on its own or not increase as much without me thinking about it. That and that I barely do any activities these days.
Hell ya man. Ever since I started eating healthy and working out consistently, I feel so much better. Your health isn’t something you want to put off because you will never get that time back. I am getting healthy now so that in the future I will be around long enough to see all my grandkids grow up and be with my wife as long as possible.
I had a friend who had a heart attack shortly before he turned 50. That and the fact that I had a short battle with cancer was enough to tell me I needed to get my butt in gear. I had cut out soda a long time ago, but I made a renewed effort to start working out more. I have been pretty regular at that for the past two years now. I can tell it is helping even though I haven't really lost any weight. I think I'd need to cut out the alcohol for that to happen. Not that I drink a lot. I just know it is one thing that I haven't cut out yet that I could.
Hey great to hear you beat that, had no idea! and yeah, I'm lucky I don't really enjoy alcohol, never liked beer and in general only drank in my youth cause everyone else did it. I prefered smoking some marijuana over alcohol at one point but it's been quite a tolerance break from that as well the past 5-6 years, guess you could say Hive's been the only drug I need lately, haha.
I've heard that sticking to just some wine with your last dinner shouldn't be that bad for your health and still get that little alcohol in you just to let you sleep easier at night.
I have heard that too about wine. I typically only drink on the weekends and I prefer whiskey. I really think it is the occasional captain and cokes that really get me. That's the only time I drink soda. I love my sweets though and that doesn't help me either. I recently started doing some weight training. They say as you get older you need to build more muscle to burn the fat, so I am focusing on that. I got way luckier than a lot of people with the cancer. Only cost me a nut.
Haha that's nice to hear!
That's a really huge step. And I guess you know that already that we would be on the edge of our seats for those pictures, lol, but then again, there's no pressure. I hope you have the willpower to continue with this.
🤣
I hope you can stick with it :) Maybe add some swimming too?
@scholaris could give you lots of suggestions and motivation about changing your lifestyle. As well as inspiration that you really can be healthy again :) ...
Can't wait to see the vacation pictures!

Thanks for the mention. And best of luck, truly, to @acidyo. Hindsight is always 20/20.
The best advice I’ve learned is to start small and stick to it. Increase gradually as you can or one day you’ll have to start hard and deal with it.
Over the last 12 months I’ve been living medical nightmare scenarios. Ultimately, it was because I did not listen to my own body when it mattered.
Hope you're starting to feel better! and yeah, gradual is the plan, currently just trying to stick to water and some natural juice here and there along with coffee and at the same time not eating the whole meals but leaving some out.
I am feeling better. Thank you very much for asking.
I've got about a year left before my body stabilizes. Got part of my spine fixed in March and I've been in my sons' karate class now for a couple of weeks. It's been good pain, especially since the kids are more motivated now that daddy is joining in on the "fun". Not sure yet how I feel about getting beaten up by high school graduates, but at the end of each class my body gets a little looser and easier to control.
Haha sounds like a fun way to get back in shape, hope there's no Mike Tyson's or Dwayne Johnson highschoolers there. :D
Except that there are LOL 😆. I was powned religiously by some kid that just got out of high school. Perhaps, I'm making it out more than it is, but these kids have infinite energy during training. However, each day gets a little easier as my body gets stronger.
The first couple of months really sucked after surgery. Now, I'm sore in the morning, but it's not so bad. I used to drink all the time reaching for a bottle each time I went to the store. Now, I walk past the alcohol and it doesn't even phase me.
The effort and pain are worth the improvement in life that follows.
Swimming would be great but I'd have to see about the availability in this area.
It’s one thing to commit to a plan, but it’s something else entirely to hold yourself publicly accountable. Doing that just takes your discipline to a whole other level in my experience.
Wish you the best and will be cheering you on from here!
Thanks!
Bangkok changes people haha. When I was there, it was lot of walking and somehow I got used to it. Now, I walk daily even for an hour. I think I roughly lost 20 pounds from walking when I was there. Also, keep it up and don't complicate the whole thing :D
I mostly had to do it so that @hiddenblade could get a lot of pictures taken with her camera, lol. But I didn't mind it, people are so nice there so it's not like others may imagine New York or something where they think many people equals difficulty to walk on the streets. The only thing that was annoying was getting from places during rush hours, a couple km's could some times take an hour while we contemplated why we took a grab/taxi in the first place.
Since you have got a good start towards your goal, it is very possible for you to end it well. I wish you goodluck and success. And I think I like the fact that you announced it to us in the community.
We'd support you!
Writing it out here shows your seriousness about the matter. You can do it!💪
I was just reading a while back the preview of your Bangkok trip via hiddenblade and can't wait to see more photos😊
This is something I need to start soon. I have already started exercising at home, and I also walk outside for 30 minutes a day, as fast as I can. I'm sure you can do it, man, if you're as committed to exercise as you are to the Hive projects. I wish you the best of luck.
Walking is indeed your best bet along with weight training. Jogging actually makes your body go into survival mode storing up the fat and also blocks the air flow. But jog walks are a good level up. Good luck on your journey, health is wealth.
PS: I plan on going for a good walk and then weight training after, hmmmm maybe I should post about it.
Much success and courage, when you are used to eating sweets and sodas the beginning is hard, once I gave up sugar for three months and I did very well, the primci6fue was what it cost, I know you are determined and you will succeed.
It is good to start those walks little by little, and drink a lot of water, combine fruit snacks and reduce carbohydrates that will help you a lot. Greetings I look forward to seeing your progress 👍
What was the cost exactly? :D
The cost was the first few days the anxiety made me sick, I was a little hungry, I ate less and I wanted sweets but then with time I got used to it.
aah anxiety, yeah, already felt/feeling some of that. I just asked cause looked like your autocorrect or something messed the word up in your comment. ^^
I read your post and it's just what I'm currently experiencing, the difference is that the sadness from the bereavement was who took me further away from my exercise routines and that I don't think I would be able to share the progress on Hive haha. All we need is discipline for this goal we want to achieve and in a short time we might feel and look fabulous like Dan... Happy start of the week! 💪
posting is a great way to hold yourself accountable and should help with the motivation. All healthy and good things for you you'll feel better and more! Look forward to seeing the progress and to help keep you motivated. Heck you might even able able to curate during some walks lol
Hey! I'm a professional manual curator, I can't let myself get distracted!
jk, I actually downloaded some audiobooks I might give a try instead so I can still keep my eyes on the road while being fed sci-fi to my brain. Might make it easier to walk longer distances if there are enough cliff hangers. :D
I actually just started the same with audio books and loving it. Great for walks, airplane rides etc.
Good on you for making the changes. I need to find the self discipline to do the same. Like you, exercise used to give me an opportunity to clear my head, organize my thoughts, and actually burn some stress off. I do hope you find it improves your health and you feel better once you have been working at it for a bit. Look forward to you sharing your journey.
Working out has helped me the most when it came to clearing my mind back in my early 20s. It's funny how pushing and pulling on a heavy set of dumbbells and machines can help declutter your mind so much. I think it's really the heavy breathing, the pauses we take between sets and exercises, that's what helps us think a bit better.
Also, the quality of sleep on those days after intense workouts are unparalleled.
Ha yeah i lost 50 pounds in 3 months in 2019 then gained it all back over a couple years after covid started in 2020. Nice to know i can lose weight that fast though just need to start exercising again
With just your own body weight, and the correct technique, you can achieve a lot. I have the opposite problem in that I struggle to put on weight. It could be the third world diet and budget - a blessing in disguise as being underweight is the apparent ideal place for top health and longevity.
Best wishes on your regimen, from the south coast of Africa.
Congratulations for this great decision! Stopping drinking soda is very important, because as you say, it helps to feel lighter in your mind and also prevents osteoporosis, which although in men is less frequent, soda still ends up being a risk factor. It is a very good change, especially if the intention is to improve your quality of life. That, together with an increase in exercise, will surely give you more energy and raise your vibration.
Thanks for sharing and the best luck for this new path!

Water tastes good once you start getting used to drinking it. :D
Little changes takes us far, good luck, sure to find results appealing once into the rhythm of longer walks. Most desk jockeys feel it's a waste of time, yet it clears the mind and opens one up to thinking whilst walking. 👍
You can do it!! =) Great start! :)
It is really not easy to keep up with the commitment of exercising daily but then some people are doing it so it is possible, good you also stopped taking soda, and just incase you eat late night food i will advise against it.
It's really easy to put weight and eating junk food non stop. I just recently start eating healthy and i say no to sugar and trust me in 3 weeks i have lost 5kg weight.
Thank you for sharing some tip, but in my case I didn't even engage myself to exercise or having a diet, but I think it is because of my depression 2 years ago. From 65kgs to 50kgs real quick huhu, but I'm doing better now which is the good thing I do for myself now. Anyways, just wishing you luck and good results in the future!
Thanks, and good to hear you doing better, let's hope it continues that way!
Making some changes with the food definitely helps! Rice is the culprit. 😆
lol earlier he just said he didn't want rice today cos we ate rice last night. Like bruhhh we eat rice everyday. Then I remember he's not Filipino 😂
I used to proudly say I'm eating organic food everyday but nothing beats rice with any Pinoy "sud-an" so I'm having cheat meals every other day.😂
Ooohh so that's your secret. 😋 No matter how good pasta tastes like I will still crave for rice lol
Exercise always proofs to be a healthy and great way to keep fit.
pretty sure that's not what he says there xD
hahahhahahha
I know but it suits it in this context
If you need pre workout or protein I have developed some of the best and it is Aussie made. You could potentially be the first person to pay for it with Hive.
think I'm gonna try cutting out the unnecessary stuff I put in my body first before looking if I need something else.
is @hiddenblade feeding you to make you chubby so other girls don't look at you? cause that is why I did with my husband until the doctor put him on a diet ☹️ now my plans are ruined!!!
Wouldn't surprise me :p
You know what, I could be your trainer helping you lose some weight ;)
Not compromise on exercise buddy. Ignoring it is like ignoring your health.
Can let you know if it starts to feel like I'm not making any progress even though I'm trying, but right now I'm still at the point where I need to try first. :D
Where have I heard that before? 🤔
75 would be a little too low for my length I think, but nice to see you still going strong with your close to useless comments. :p
