So many red blooming Lobivias this year! Love it :D
This one is not new. I have it for a about 4 years (two of those actually) and it is the third season it blooms for me. Very reliable one!
Lobivia arachnacantha v. vallegrandensis
It is a small cactus native to Argentina and Bolivia. It's often growing hidden among some grasses and rocks often almost flat with the soil. It doesn't grow up, but it easily grows multiple offshoots and with time it will turn to a nice clump.
As many cacti, it needs cold winter in order to bloom in spring. The temperature in their natural environment often drop close to 0 degrees. It will handle freezing temp too for shirt time, but only if they are kept completely dry. The moist and cold is a recipe for rot.
Since it got a new post it started to grow a lot nicer and the small green balls really plumped. Every years there is a few more of them.
It also bloomed with more flowers.
Another bud waiting to open:
Here is am image in their natural environment. It is not mine of course. It was taken by one of my cactus, especially Lobivia type gurus - Tomasz Blaczkowski. I ordered some seeds from him, but didn't sow them yet. The damn virus got on a way of me picking it up. Hope they they will still sprout when I finally manage to sow them.

.This flower is gorgeous, you are very lucky to have it at home and see it bloom, congratulations, beautiful cactus and great photos.
Thanks a lot! I am really enjoying the flowers :)
The flowers (and fruits) of cacti are so beautiful. It's been years since I've had a cactus, and I haven't seen one in the wild for a long time, but they never disappoint.
They grow wild where you live?
Here I just see the big opuntias around.
Oh, no. I live in a rather humid place. But when I've been on trips to arid regions where cacti grow, I've seen some in bloom, some fruits.
Now, if you ask me for their names, I have to do my homework.
I will not torture you like that :)
Do you have any photos though?
Hahahaha. Is not torture, is just that I would have to search the web.
Opuntias grow here too. But there are other species. I have some photos, I think. I have to look for them.
Wow the flower is so pretty! My cacti are still babies, I wonder in how many years will they bloom?Does it happen every year?
Thank you!
They should bloom every year after they reach the right size (unless I kill them first).
Please show your cacti! :D
I have many, mostly babies
Wooww so many!
Those tall ones (columnar) cacti are either way harder to bloom, or take much longer to reach the blooming size. I have some similar ones to yours and they never did. They are still very pretty though :)
I read somewhere that some need up to 40-70 years to reach maturity (I think it was about Saguaro cactus). I don't think it's any of yours. But just to give an example :p
P.S. I like the white covers :)
Oh wow 40 years.... I am 31. I must live at least 100 for my cacti to bloom. A great motivator for a succulent lover hahahaha. I muust liive😂😂
Hahaha You have no choice 😂
I will make a future post with all of my succulents. Gosh I love my plants, I treat them like my babies. ❤️❤️
