Market Friday: Wading the Salt Marshes of Chincoteague Island

in Market Friday4 months ago

The Chincoteague ponies can be seen wandering the beaches, forests of pine, or the salt marshes on Assateague Island. Assateague Island is 37 miles long and has three different agencies that own/operate it: the National Park Service (NPS), Maryland State Parks, and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The ponies live in two herds, separated by fence and State, 150 on the Virginia side and 80 on the Maryland side. On the Maryland side, roaming freely is encouraged, while the Virginia side fences off areas to discourage wandering where people are.

The best time to come down to the islands to see them is between late April thru mid-October, although for me, I like it best in May/June as I get the best views of Spring-born foals wandering the salt marshes with their moms. The Virginia side has the unspoiled beaches and the lighthouse, and a US Fish and Wildlife refuge, plus about 70 new ponies on that end of the island each summer. Not a hard choice for me.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

It has been rainy and foggy out there this week, but, this is real life so the pictures kind of reflect that look. The last thing you want to do is drag a bunch of equipment hiking through the marsh. We camped out at Tom's Cove right on the waterfront. They have fishing peirs, crabbing piers... everything you need. You haven't lived until you have had crabs over the campfire. The cost is always more on pony week, $71.88 a night, water and electric on the water. I know, we are a little spoiled, but, I need my coffee in the morning and while you may not call that camping, I slept in a hammock. Close enough, yes? But, why on the water? I could just wait and hope for some rain! :)

Please leave the link to your post here so it can easily be found by others. It helps you and me to have them in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much for joining us!! ❤

It is interesting to see the different colors and markings of the Chincoteague Ponies. I find it fascinating to watch every spring, the colors of the foals. There is a book out that I am ready to purchase called The Colorful Chincoteague, by Amanda Geci. It documented and researches the colors found in the Chincoteague Pony. The colors and patterns that are known to exist or have existed are documented as they have never been before. The author is also working on documenting the many instances of other breeds being crossed into the Chincoteague Pony breed population throughout its history.

Paperback $28.99 or Kindle for $12.99

Rain or shine, everyone is ready for the Pony Penning week. There was no lack of people, although covid is spiking on that side of the bridge. There was a distinct party feeling in the air. How can it not? It's showtime for the ponies!

There are all sorts of fun to be had. Crabbing... fishing, you name it! After the ponies did their walk on the beach the other morning, it was business as usual. A mans gotta eat, yes?

You may get tired of ponies by the time I get back home, but, there will probably be a few for the next few days. Bear with me as I find some decent internet to post, I haven't had time to wait my turn at the cafes here, but, I should be returning to regular posting soonish. Thanks for your patience and your support! You know that #MarketFriday loves you!

And just like that, this post is done. I hope you had a good time and learned a little something new. As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to visit, and just remember, #MarketFriday loves you! Thank you for supporting the challenge! Have a most fabulous day! Cheers!!

Chincoteague Island

Have you been to Chincoteague Island
Where the wild ponies roam,
Where fingers of land intermingle
With marsh and bay and cove?

Along the Eastern Shore
Fisherman cast out their lines;
They're catching fluke and channel bass,
The tide is rising high.

Above the seagulls' wheel,
The oysters lie in bed.
Off the coast the dolphin dive;
The tide is at its ebb.

Peaceful Chincoteague Island,
You sleepy Tidewater town,
Your tides and mine are one ;
How can I leave you now?

Christina Pope

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.
    Take pictures! Be creative!

  3. Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post, it is too difficult to guess on some
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!
  5. Following me and reblogging the post would be appreciated, but not a rule, more vision for more views on the #MarketFriday posts!
  6. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post.

Well I would leave the pretty ponies all to you and instead grab my metal detector and spend the days walking/wading that beach. Ponies and horses are fine and all, but in my mind, pale when there is a choice of gold and booty to be found. I can almost smell the gold of some lost wedding rings perhaps even with diamonds. 😲

So are you saying the 72 bucks a night covers the crab on the campfire too??? Oh I am so packing my bags and fueling up the truck!

Oh when you get some internet, I did get a lame Market Friday attempt in after all :)

Oh, I left my rings and things at home, so you won't be getting mine! It's all about the ponies, @old-guy-photos, there are times that money just doesn't rule! This is one of those times.

$72.00 is for the site. The crabs and campfire are on you. But, being you can go crabbing right here, it's pretty cool. Crabs are king here! Sorry, but, that is sort of like free, isn't it?

Thanks so much for taking the time to make a post, drop the link, and support the tag!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Yes it is the sticker shock that keeps me at home. What they charge for things these days is completely criminal. Staying at home is all I can afford, and that even just barely!

A well-deserved holiday exactly where you need it to feel good. With ponies, crabs, sea, and camping ( If I understand correctly). I'm so glad this happened...
I'll tell you this, Dan, the unborn...

You haven't lived until you have had crabs over the campfire.

P.S. Many hours after I wrote this comment I finished my post as well. Because I didn't want to write too much about the market, I went back to my travelogue. I hope you don't mind. I wrote with #marketfriday in mind, a more intuitive market.
Sozopol, a small town by a Black Sea

You know I never mind! I am just as happy either way. I love your travelogues! They go a different directions and you always make it a wonderful experience. I really think thinking outside the box gives #MarketFriday more depth!

So thank you so much! Ha! Ha! Dan the unborn!&

#MarketFriday loves you anyway! :)

I will never tire of posts about the ponies
I know that you love going there at this time and am more than happy to see a few posts about it

I know you probably mentioned it before I didn’t know the island was split between two states or maybe I did read it and had forgotten

Full on roughing it camping ⛺️ was fun when we were younger but now we need a few more comforts and a hammock sounds a great idea to me

Here is my post for this week

Hey I remembered to add the link this week

Thank you! I really do love going back there, probably because of the good that they do with the wildlife in that area. I always forget the island is split myself. I always equate it with Virginia. Ha!

The hammock is the perfect foil to rough it. Rocking myself to sleep, the waves with their rhythmic sound. I do love it.

Thanks so much for dropping your link. I appreciate your support of #MarketFriday!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I am sitting here imaging laying on a hammock by the water hearing the waves eating the colors of sunset

Ohh what a pleasant and dreamy thought 😎😂😎

Hehe! You fell asleep while you were imagining it, didn't you? 😁

LOL honestly I did I was watching a movie with Lulu as I was commenting, and not long after this comment I was woken by Lulu LOL

Denise, I added my story about the central market of my city. Hope you will enjoy the reading, tho the visuals arent that great this time: I came up with what my iphone could provide 🤓

AND it all took place exactly on Friday, i.e. yesterday - isnt it nice? Friday is for Market! 🙏

Hope everything is fine with you, let me treat you with a hot Hive !PIZZA 🍕

Thank you @qwerrie !! I look forward to it and the iPhone is fine! Thanks for dropping the link!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I know, and that makes me a bit more happy creature than I am! 😊
I just posted Part 2 (with more funny visuals).

I can feel how much fun you had with all the pony, fishing and crab.
I wait to see more post about the hammock and was it something hunged over water.
The beach is lively and everyone is sure having a great time.

We also took out time to party and celebrate the children in a beautiful cultural way here.

Nooooo! it was hung between two trees! :) We did have fun all week and even though it was pretty hot, it is the end of July and to be expected. The beach is always lively and I am just happy to get wet and cool off.

I am so glad you partied!!! Thank you for sharing that time with us!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Thanks for taking the time to read the post and drop the link! Indeed, travel rocks, although going to the shore house area isn't really traveling for me! But, I will take it!

Hope you are all resettled with life! Glad you had a great time!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Seeing the wild ponies in the marshes would be so cool and the camping experience sounds great - crabs cooked on the fire, sleeping in a hammock...awesome!

Well, it is roughing it, but, someone has to do it. The wifi is nearly zero, but, some days, you just can't worry about it.

I just read your Porto post! Hello! That was an amazing post!

Thanks for stopping by!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Sometimes not having wifi is a good thing. Forced unplugging from the world

I cant say it's a bad thing. It's definitely been less stress with so much goung on.

Watching ponies would make me more than happy staying rain or shine. Crabs or lobster on an open fire for dinner, well that would be a dream come true!

!LUV the ponies, island sounds a delightful place to relax, Oh how I enjoyed that poetry to give the finishing touch.

Happy Friday Denise.

Thank you so much, Joan! @joanstewart I had to find a cafe to do a little #MarketFriday! :) I am okay with that, I came in the heat of the day. I am in agreeance with you. Rain or shine, being one with nature and ponies - there is no bad time.

The open fire and the day's catch are amazing. We do that when we come to the shore, crabbing is big here. Lots of the sweet blue crabs. Life is simple here, one of the reasons I like coming out.

One of our horses came from the pack. He is horse size, so they have both ponies and horses here. Anyway, thank you so much for the Luv, the support, and for always leaving me with such great comments. xo

#MarketFriday loves you!

You know you away having fun when having to pull in the reigns to find something to write about locally !LOLZ being away always rewarding!

Open fire, tasty treat at end of day remembering all the good times spent in a region with little change, another good reason to return.

Knowing as you watch the herd of horse pass one may be related to your own, visiting family I say.

Wonderful weekend wishes to you and yours.

My daughter thinks I don't give her enough privacy.
At least that's what she wrote in her diary.

@dswigle, I sent you an $LOLZ on behalf of @joanstewart
Are You Ready for some $FUN? Learn about LOLZ's new FUN tribe!

LOL That is funny! :)

I meant that there is no wifi at the campsite, so I have to find a cafe or some type of shop to do any Hive. :)

It does get me off the street though. :)

As warm as this time of the year is, I am not suffering by taking some time off from the heat (and the sun!)

I always think about the horses passing and being related. I actually know who his mother (and father) are, even though they are wild, their herds are small enough to keep track of those things and there is only one stallion per herd. :)

Seeing the horses in the wild adds to the reason to keep going back.

Staying out of the heat a good reason to keep in contact, hidden away in a small cafe sipping a juice sounds good.

Travel safely on the way home!

Thanks, Joan! I am at the Shore House now as it is close by and will go home tomorrow! Have a great day!

Wow lovely ponies. I bet myself and the children would love being at where you were. Such fun! Look at the beach crowd. Good to see some pre-covid crowd back huh? That must have been a great time for you!

Here is my participating post for #marketfriday and the link to it!

Happy weekend to you!

Yes! The ponies are so wonderful! We have a lot of fun when we come here, the ponies live on the island. The beach is always lovely and yes, it feels like we are getting back to normal. Almost.

Thank you for dropping your link!

This just never gets old. What a beautiful place and horses.

It really doesn't, does it? Thank you for stopping by and reading the post! Could you send me some wifi? Pretty please!! The horses are really beautiful this year! The markings are pretty!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I'll get with my people and see what they can do about it.

Thank you!! You are posting more than me now. 😀

ha ha.... I go in spells. Before the last several posts, there was about a 2 week lull. Sometimes I got something dumb to say.... sometimes I got nuthin !

Me too. I have been posting less, getting busier! That's a good thing. Sort-of. :)

As long as the "busy" is something fun and not more work, it IS good !

It feels good to see the horses roaming. I roamed a little myself to get some light bites from I place I had not try before. Thing is their has the name of a country that does not exist anymore. Strangely, I read something about the people who started it is a pilot from Macedonia which is what part of Yugoslavia before.

Oh, yes!! That hasn't been Yugoslavia since 1992! But, that is interesting that a pilot from Macedonia started it. Perhaps he misses Yugoslavia?

The horses were fun, Ace! @ace108. Glad to see you roaming a little to find something different! I will have to check it out and see what you had!

Thanks for supporting the challenge!

#MarketFriday loves you!

You're welcome.

Flashbacks to childhood and reading a book early school called "Misty of Chincoteague". All I remember is horses and swimming, and maybe someone got sunburned (or that could be made up). Looks like a cool place, and of course who doesn't like ponies?

Wow! Are you serious??? That is so awesome! I loved that book when I was a kid! No! Sunburned was very real. I am blonde and I can attest to that!

It has been a warm week, but it is still pretty fun to be here! How doesn't love a pony? How about a herd of them>?

Pony Penning Week is in its 97th year. It just doesn't get old!

Just something about that name Chincoteague that is so unique. I guess it stuck with me for what 50 years? Wow.

I know, right? I love the Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. It is said to be an Indian name meaning “beautiful land across the water”. The pronunciation and spelling have changed over time. Court records in 1671 indicate a spelling of “Jungoteague”. A reference from the early 1800s indicates a spelling of “Gingoteag”.

'Four things greater than all things are: Women and Horses, Power and War". My fave Redyard Kipling carved those immortal words in stone a hundred years ago. ❤️

There is much truth to that. Especially the women and horses. :)

Hi @qwerrie !! Good morning from here!

good morning, Denise! I just cooked my dinner and consumed it and enjoying my deserved cup of coffee. let me treat you with... more !PIZZA?.. a good way to start the day. we have a great relaxed sunny Sunday here! 💃

Poem is perfect ending for your post 👍 Ponies with their moms are wonderful. Looks like a nice little piece of heaven you have found.

Thank you! The ponies are a huge part of the island and it is a nice slice of heaven. It is close to my other house, the one on the shore. It is a few hours from where I live, but, I actually bought it first! :)

Thank you! I hope you are having a great day! Did you drop the link! to your post here?

#MarketFriday loves you! Thanks for reminding me. I was waiting for Friday since I posted it a few days early.

I knew that! I appreciate you dropping the link!

What a great island with its beaches, pine forests and ponies. This is my entry for Market Friday

The island is amazing and filled with everything one needs to have a good life! Beaches, pine forests, and ponies!!! :)

Thank you for dropping the link to your post!

Seeing wild ponies is great!!! I will be interested to see photos of these amazing animals. it's sad that covid is raging in your area. but nothing can be done. have a nice holiday! link to my post:

I say that it is raging, but, that is because there was literally none and the new strain is being tracked. People stopped being tested, even with Covid, so the numbers are always skewed. (to me)

It is fine and we are still clear from it, we wear a mask when we feel the need and when we are required, so less of a risk.

Thank you and yes! I do love the ponies in the wild!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I love the ponies and the beach!!

I love travel, don't you!
Enjoy yourself, @dswigle !

Absolutely! Travel rocks! This is over near my shore house, so I don't think it counts. :)

Thanks for dropping by!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I hope we have a place like that where the horses can roam freely as well. All the horses here are owned and they are used as horses for hire.

That's nice that there are lots of activities to be done there like crabbing and fishing. I haven't tried fishing but I did try some crabbing, just trying to find some though and that's about it.

Enjoy the rest of your travels :) Happy weekend!

I love that we have quite a few different places where the horses run wild and free. I own several horses, but, they have a good life - at least I would like to think that.

There are lots of activities and crabbing is pretty easy here as they are abundant! Thanks for stopping by and reading!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Oh, lucky horses you have :)

When we go to rivers around here, there were only few crabs that we can find, sometimes none at all.

We have lots of nicely sized crabs that are delicious. Also, scallops, clams, oysters, fish, and every other kind of seafood almost! You can catch most of your own easily.

We have the sea, the river has different food. :)

Now that is what I want to experience too where you can easily catch those seafood.

Hello dear friend @dswigle good afternoon
What a beautiful place for a vacation in contact with nature, I love ponies, I would love to visit this place, I appreciate that you have made these beautiful images known to us
Enjoy it
I take this opportunity to share the link of my participation

Fishing at the beach with a large crowd of people? This is something unprecedented for me.

If there is a beach and water, it will happen here. :) They were surf fishing, catching fish the swim in the surf.

You do it from the beach. People are really careful.

Thanks for stopping by!

I will check it out. Thank you.

What a lovely vacation day, are these ponies are wild? They are so cute :)

They are wild! They are referred to as the Chincoteague Ponies as they live on the island.

They are always fun to go see, especially when they have a little one following. :)

Wow! That place is wonderful! Love to see horses and ponies in the wild. Your camping sounded so enjoyable!
Miss the beach and the sea!

I love seeing all animals in their natural habitat! You are right. Camping is always fun, but, would be a little better without the heat! Lucky there is so much water!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Next time you should bring along a portable air conditioner! Or water fan! lol

I brought a fan! LOL I am such a baby!

Hahahah. I would have brought two! One as a backup! Just in case. 🙀😂

Haha! It all worked out! :)

I think any place where people are happy and peaceful is like a holiday.

It is exactly like a holiday! Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I need my coffee in the morning and while you may not call that camping, I slept in a hammock. Close enough, yes? But, why on the water? I could just wait and hope for some rain! :)

Something like this? I have not tried this so far, but this is probably actually one of the best ways for camping. Maybe a little bit scary for those, who cannot swim. For example me. I tried to learn to swim as a young child. We had swimming lessons in the elementary school in a pool with teachers, but somehow I could not learn it, and I have not tried to learn it since then, so currently I cannot swim. Who knows. Maybe I would be able to learn it now as an adult.

Oh, yes! Perfect! :) The rhythmic sound of the ocean puts me to sleep.

One of my daughters sinks like a rock. She can swim when she really thinks hard about what she is doing, but, without effort, she sinks. She goes to swimming lessons every couple of years. So, I believe you. I don't think it is easier as an adult, but, you probably put forth more effort. I would try it.

I never thought about it. All the kids in my family were water rats. They put us in the water and we started swimming.

Give it a try. You have nothing to lose, right? Thanks for stopping by!

Me too. I made some swimming today. In a pizza. :-D

But seriously. It was delicious/tasty. This is my entry for today's #MarketFriday: A spicy Diavola pizza (again) - #MarketFriday (2022.07.29).
