After recently carrying out an analysis on the Churn rates on Steemit and an analysis of when people tend to drop off Steemit, I have decided to take some actions to try an improve retention rates myself. After all that is what business intelligence is all about, acting on the insights.
By carrying out different analysis on the steemit blockchain I have found that the average drop off day is 32 and the median in 75
So I have connected to the STEEMSQL database and collected information from accounts set up 90 to 30 days ago
To this data I then added further filters and criteria to the dataset to ensure I was left with quality users and hopefully very little bots. I’m not going to get into the filtering here, because what I am classing as a quality user is subjective.
My list of accounts is 514 long and over the next 4 weeks I hope to get to each one of you. I am going to check out your profile and if you have been sent a link to this post(or the follow on posts), you have been selected by me for some Steemit TLC. Not all the accounts will get sent a link, anything that looks like spam or bad for the steemit platform will be excluded (heheheh its also a test to see how accurate my data skills are at detecting quality accounts)
If you are reading this post, because you have found it an I didn’t send you a link then you are also welcome to try out some of the tools and initiatives I suggest further in the post. But please do leave a comment below because I want to try and track the data of these efforts and see if it has any impact on retention.
I think it is safe to say almost everyone on Steemit wants to see Steemit succeed, but we also know how hard it is to keeping going. Here are some of the possible reasons people leave steemit
1. Unable to find good relevant content
2. Just don’t get how steemit works
3. Are not earning rewards
4. They think steemit is a waste of time
Are there any more reasons you can think of? Please do comment below and let me know. In fact, you stand in that threshold where we begin to lose users so if anyone can answer the question you can.
There are many projects and initiatives around that to help you grow on steemit as both an author and curators. It has been proved with the data that people that participate in these initiatives tend to stick around. It has also been proven by the data, the longer you stick around and engage on the platform the higher your rep will grow. And there is a correlation between higher rep and higher rewards.
Steemit is not a get rich quick place, it’s a slow burner. If you are here to make money fast, then you are in the wrong place. But with time and effort and not giving up, you will get there in the end. You are still an early adaptor of an experimental platform. The aim now is to engage with you to help you find the tools and communities you need to make it happen.
So, let me share some stuff with you that could help you stay on your way. If the tools and initiatives are not your thing, but are still looking for something, thinking of leaving steemit, comment below and I will do by best to point you in the right direction.
Check out @SteemBasicIncome – an experimental initiative where by a pool of votes is split between a group, new pools being created when a cap is reached on existing pools. It works like this, you purchase a basic income unit for 1 STEEM. For this, you and a person you select gets added to the current pool.
Check out the leagues of Excellence – originally started by @abh12345 for all of Steemit, it aims to reward human, manual curation and general engagement on the blockchain. This league has grown highly popular and has now been replicated for the Indonesian region by @paulag and Italy by @girolamomarotta

The next tool is @dustsweeper. A project by @danielsaori and @davemccoy Did you know that posts with a pay-out value showing as <$.02 are not paid out? For people starting on steemit, there is a way you can claim this payment. By sending 1 SBD to dustsweeper, this bot will sweep though all your posts before pay-out and vote any post that are below the threshold. So, these dust payments no longer go to waist.
Finally watch out for phishing attacks. These come in the form of posts made to look like they are on steemit. When you log in, you give the attacker your keys and your account can become comprised.

@paulag thanks for pointing me over here. all things that @thedarkhorse has told me about but think that many of the newer members on steemit could use the info.
part of the issue is lack of exposure and unrealistic expectations of what a newbie should expect to earn. remove all the paid votes and massive self votes and there are very few posts that earn more then say $20-30 outside of very established people who have spent a lot of time to build up their accounts.
yes a few get lucky with 1 post and picked by curie but overall most people that are new need to expect to make next to nothing for months while they are building relationships. first build an audience then worry about earnings.

I hear this time and time again and have different opinions on it. Trending does not help, but personally I don't understand why people think if they come here they should expect to earn big buck straight away. Having come to steemit as an established blogger, I know what it takes and had no expectations. lol in fact I thought maybe I could find followers here for my non steemit blog.

engagement as you say is key. when someone walks around with nobody to talk to they feel unwanted and go back to comfortable places they already know like facebook.
when people see trash posts making hundreds of dollars because of bid bots but they don't understand what a bid bot is and they can't earn even a couple pennies when they write their heart out they get discouraged. trending and hot are complete garbage and should be done away with. these pages make people wonder why they dont stack up.
guessing that if you can figure out how to make newbies see some level of profits in the first 30 days the rate of dropping out is way lower.
would also be very interested in knowing what percentage of the accounts that leave are bots, scammers, or plagiarizers who get flagged and just open a new account.
I have never been a bid bot fan. In fact our witness principle are based on manual curation and engagement ( you might consider us for one of your witness votes, our witness server is @steemcommunity and my witness partner is @abh12345)
At the moment it is impossible to establish what % of accounts are bots in the first place, let alone what % of these leave. its also rather hard to establish who opens new accounts with out human verification

@paulag I had a post a few days ago asking for help for ideas on how to improve the contest and one of the things that came up was how can we improve the engagement level with people on the posts that are featured. I'm a newbie and signed up in march and only recently started to post, how well is up for debate, but i wanted to start posting to find out how things work. The more I research and read, the more confused I get... "upvot at this time, dont upvote after this time, always upvote ur own content, dont upvote it, ugh is where i get so I stop reading and just keep coming up with different written posts to post in "ulog" to just get something going. I am new to block chain and crypto, but thats how I got here, crypto currency. So with all that, can't wait to start getting the hang of this so i can see if this is for me. It definitely isn't a sign-up and go platform, alot to learn!
so much to learn, and such a diverse range of information you have been given. Steemit is an experiment in its self, no one can really define what it is, or how one should behave. I have let self morals guide me. When I joined, I self voted. In fact I self voted until I became a witness. Most new peoples votes are not worth much - its when your vote becomes worth more that people take notice of self voting. Be guided by your moral standards is the advice I give on that one.

I haven't tried anything other than upvoting, posting and commenting...i successfully transferred etherum to steem to give myself some steem power. I still cant adjust the amount my vote amounts can be. I'm stubborn like, so i'll get it going sometime

One of the frustrating things I can say I have is coming to a link, like ur busy one or any other links i have come upon with "Here is the how to" type blogs for steemeit, and its just another blog or service that wants me to make a new account. I'm not being a debbie downer, just expressing that frustration. I gues I'm just used to the ease of use on the other social platforms. My main concern is that i don't screw myself by my actions before I get to know the way it all waorks around here! Once I do figure it out, I'll definitely have something to blog about! Lol
you do not need another account, you sign in with your steemit account. You the steem blockchain has a number of different user interfaces, steemit.com being 1. another example would be dtube or dlive. all of these decentraised apps build on steemit require one log in :-). Anything you post on these apps are also posted to steemit.com
Yes indeed there is alot to learn about how everything functions but in many ways it is very exciting to learn all the tools and functions.

hi, I just looked at your account. It seems you are spending a lot trying to buy votes from smartsteem and bots. I understand many people think this is the only way to get earnings on their posts.
I would suggest that you engage more, ask people questions about their posts, and put questions in your posts that give people a reason to comment on your post. Spend less on bots and use the SBD to buy Steem on the internal market and power up.

I use bots since they reintegrate me more sbd to be able to buy more steem power
but you are not using the SBD to buy steem power, cos it keeps going back to the bots.
lets just say to spent 100 SBD last month on bots. If you spent this on STEEM instead, then you would have gotten about 85 SP, which is worth a $.02 vote. voting ten times a day, this would have increase the amount you distributed to the community by 6 SP and your curation rewards of 1.5 SP. How much did you make using the bots that you did not send back to them?
The internal market has no fees, so you can convert your sbd to SP and grow your account organically

So glad to see more of a push for user retention. I agree that finding communities is key. @steemsugars, @thealliance, @thewritersblock, and so many others have helped me find my family here and stay inspired, as well as feel supported.
Also, the @welcomewagon is putting together bite-sized tutorials for newbies to Steemit. I mention this because there is so much to learn, it can sometimes take a month or three to feel comfortable here, but if users just learn a little bit more each day, it starts to come together.

For me, the number one problem as a reader is finding people to follow. I was here for seven months before I found you. It was five months before I found @aggroed. Every week, I discover an entirely new group of amazing people who have been around here for a while.
It's like walking through a forest in the fog. Suddenly you see a person walking past and say "Hi."
I don't like to give Steemit, Inc too hard of a time, but their progress since the token launch is a little underwhelming considering how much money they raised.
Steembasicincome Enrollment is 1 Steem, not 1 SBD. Do you mind correcting? I find people have a better experience when their initial information is accurate.

I'm glad to see that someone out there does care about user retention. It's a well known fact that a majority of the dormant or inactive accounts on steemit are newly registered accounts and a smaller fraction to accounts with lost passwords. You would hardly see an account that has been built up to high rep holding being dormant.
In this lies the problem:
"Newbies get the wrong idea about steemit, they go to the website and see trending posts worth huge amounts and because they do not know how to navigate the platform, fail to go through the new posts and see firsthand how most newbie posts do so they walk in here, expecting to be rich by the end of the week with no investments or anything of such. The result is that for most new accounts, they end up wondering why the weren't able to get even a $1.00 worth of upvotes by the end of the week."

At the moment I think (but I could be wrong) steemit chat is mentioned in the initial email. and again I could be wrong but minnowsupport is the official orientation program.
Although discord is fantastic, with any luck hivemind (the community feature on steemit) will be ready soon. Maybe it would be more in tune with steemit to get ready to build the community here?

not the wrong message at all. Getting funding is not as easy as writing a post, there are many communities trying support with people that have more connections than i. The problem is now trying to compete for funding when the lease business is so ripe. Let me think about the idea some more.

This is a really interesting initiative @paulag. I suspect you will learn a lot from it that goes beyond "saving" accounts.
A friend of mine joined steemit 1 month ago today and he already has 101 followers. However, I just went through the first page of his followers (50) and muted every single one for him, except me, as they were all spam.
He works really long hours so doesn't have much time for engagement at this point but I thought if he got started posting once a day he could build his account slowly.
But now I'm not so sure. All his followers are low rep, posting hourly sometimes, posts with just an image, following tens of thousands of accounts even though they've only been here themselves a short time and if they're not posting spam content they're just resteeming other spam content.
If I was him I would find no reason to stay at all.
I only joined last December but my first 100 followers were mostly people. This is a massive change in a short space of time.
No wonder people leave, although I would guess most of the people leaving are just spam accounts anyway.
@gillianpearce that you for your comment as it is very interesting. Having worked online for many years now I know how much time and effort it takes to grow a blog and understand how hard it is to find a niche that is interested or finds value in what I have to say. Steemit is no different. Many of the followers I had at the start we low rep accounts, but as time passed these accounts have grown, just like mine has. I am here nearly a year.
If most of the people leaving are spam accounts then good, but lets not lose good accounts when we dont have to.

I think the main point I was making was how much things have changed, for the worse, since I joined in December. That's what shocked me most.
These are my musings, not my friends. He is content to plod on for now because he's seen the success I've had.
From my perspective it's not so much that these are low re accounts. I agree with you it takes time and effort to build a blog and most of my early followers were low rep too but these accounts following him are blatant spam. They are not simply low rep accounts that will improve with time.
However, if you have found 500+ that are genuine people trying to make a go of it then I agree, the more of those you can save the better and good riddance to the spam accounts.
I look forward to hearing your report in a months time and it will be interesting to see what my friends account looks like then.
In the meantime, I'm going to go through all those that are following him and report as many as I can to Steemcleaners. 😊

Is there a list somewhere of these users or something broken down into tags they post in such as gaming? There is one community that is working on just trying get more good gaming content some rewards. While they are not focused on new accounts they are on gaming. If I found something that was up to their standards that was not a dlive or dtube video I’d be happy to pass along the link of there blog for that tag.
Biggest issues I’ve always had are the bots and copy/past spammers. Sadly the tag introduceyourself is just a horrible way to go if you are new. Too much spam and people just reposting there same blog over an over every few weeks.
514 Accounts sounds like a lot to focus on just for one person. I can only hope you find a way to break it up and get more people involved. This does sound like a wonderful experiment.

It will come Real Soon Now. As a former programmer, I know what that means. It does have the promise to be a real game changer, and kidding aside, I do think it will eventually be implemented.
However, I think it's also smart to come up with other curation strategies in the meantime. First, we don't know when it will come out (or how good it will really be). Second, this system is still very much in the birthing process - a preponderance of approaches, even (especially) failed ones, will help make it healthier in the long term. Third, there's no reason to think that current approaches and hivemind will be mutually exclusive.
I do some manual curation myself. On good days, I tell myself the above makes sense. On bad days, I tell myself it's a good rationalization to spend time browsing steemit rather than other social media.

Yep its a lot. 514 accounts. And that was after narrowing it down a lot. I could add another 1000 to that number if I widened some filters. All I can do is try and if I am running behind, I know there are people on steemit that will help

Well I can say the first part of the experiment is working for sure. You’ve found me just at the time where the initial excitement has started to wear off and I was starting to question why I was putting so many hours into writing (when I have other writing in ‘the real world’ I should really be doing instead!). But your post is exactly what I love about this platform, everyone is invested in everyone else doing well here. And after a nice little success yesterday, I’m fully back onboard!
The steem basic income is an excellent initiative that I took advantage of a couple of weeks ago. If anyone here isn’t involved in it already I highly recommend it! It’s really easy to get started (even for me, someone that’s not overly familiar with how the platform works) and while the payout is not huge it will keep paying out for as long as you keep using the platform, so it should more than pay for itself in time. The other advantages of it are more psychological/communial, for you there’s nothing worse than seeing a post you worked on get no votes, this won’t happen anymore (as long as you’re not posting more than some number of posts a week, not sure how many). For others that see your posts, the ball has already started rolling so they will probably be more likely to upvote, and also if they check your votes they can see that you’re part of the scheme so are obviously invested in the platform doing well. Also you’re helping other that have signed up too. Everyone wins!

You mentioned the psychological/communial element and that is exactly what this post and experiment aims to home in on. But here on steemit via an actual post. Steemit is not just about posting, but interacting and meeting new people. Niche content is good, but people are finding it hard to get an audience - but it also does not just have to be niche content - this post proves how well people welcome engagement. lol the next step will be getting all of you to engage with each other.

The reasons you've listed are pretty accurate I think. Though the communities on Steemit are wonderful. It just takes some time to find them and to learn how to it all works. I've found that all but finding good relevant content have sorted themselves out of me with time and engagement on the platform but I still struggle to consistently find good quality content. It is certainly here, it just seems to get buried a lot of the time.

I hadn't heard of most of those tools. I'm still navigating my way around and working things out. I like discord and the communities there but don't have a lot of time to get on there. I'm slowly carving out more time in my day to dedicate to Steemit.
Discord is awesome and there are fantastic communities, but dont let it take you away from engaging here on steemit. Many people fall trap to spending hours networking on discord and not on steemit. If the same time was spent on steemit on discussions I think steemit would be a better place.

I think one of the most common reason is because majority of people are ill-equipped to navigate through Steemit.
We are led to believe that it is so easy to start earning money here and that we become famous.
Such unrealistic expectations of course would result in disappointment and often people would leave complaining about the system.
Even if you have all the best intentions and provide guides, mentorship and a community behind someone there is still a chance that they leave because we really can't make people stay because it is their choice.
We can only offer them an environment that would hopefully make the stay.

I am from Aceh, in my country some journalists can not separate themselves with religion, culture, and ethnicity. news will be biased and this is a danger. I want to improve the understanding of journalism for the younger generation, because they will later become the successor. dream I want to establish a free journalism school.

What a great idea! Thank you for finding me. My goal when I first signed up with Steemit was realistic, I had no expectations of making much money at all. It was only because I received a few Curie votes and an OCD-resteem vote that I finally had enough money in my wallet to really start learning about this platform.
The most frustrating part about this platform when I first signed up was not able to get notifications when people were talking to me. I finally learned how to sign up with GINAbot a couple of weeks ago and this tool has been super helpful to me!
People who write good contents spend a lot of time writing posts and working on photos. I know this was the case for me. I was barely getting any traction or response at first. Then to see others posting one photo without any words and get $30 on the photo was frustrating. I have to admit, I almost gave up because of this. I could better spend my time elsewhere.
I was lucky enough to have a few, more established people on the platform helping me before I realized I was being helped. After learning about voting bots and how to read wallets, I came across someone who had been helping me by paying for bots for my posts. The moment I understand what that person did for me without my knowledge, I signed up with Steembasicincome and sponsored him. I have also sponsored several newbies who I thought should be encouraged to stay on the platform. It feels good to pay it forward.

Giving is contagious, i was also very fortunate a few months ago where by I was granted delegation from two supporters for a couple of months and if it wasn't for that I don't think i would be doing this now. And look at what you are doing :-)

are you using OBS to stream, you will need to look at the setting on your streaming software so you can record while streaming.
If you have subscribed to steembasicincome then yes you are in, however if you have any doubts you can aways ask someone on the steembasicincome team

it is a difficult job, but if we only have bots looking at all of the accounts then steemit will fail as a social networking site. I want to see steemit work as a more social place and show people its not all about posting. people have to engage with each other. Hi, I got an comment about this post but I think I'm little bit late for the discussion. In my opinion 3rd party platforms are the best way to create and develop a community. These platforms can be about anything or any category. Because there was 1M user in here and all of them have different skills. For example I'm writing about MongoDB via Utopian but my girl friend write her own art. But she can't find support for her contents. We can say to her "don't give up!" but everybody want connection, views, rewards. It's not mean everybody should earn 300 $ for per post but 0.02 $ and 0 comment wasn't good motivation for a writer. So, we need more 3 part platfors or projects or grups like Curi for support every categories.
not at all to late, glad to see you came over. If it was not for this experiment I would not have come across your account, and being a data person, I would have been missing out. Utopian caters for 1 community and is able to support that community, as Dlive supports theirs. And we are also hoping the community feature goes part of the way to help solve this problem.

I am very new (26 days).
Before I joined I did a lot of reading about Steemit. Most of it made it sound like a 'make a lot of money for not doing a whole lot' site. Well of course that sounded pretty great! After I joined I realized quickly that wasn't the case. But I started meeting some really nice people here. I 'met' some welcome bots, but it was the real people who reached out to me that made the difference. Came for the money and stayed for the people!
To your points -
Looking into Steemit one of the first things that seemed odd and a negative was the 7-day cut off for rewards. What if I write something that is 'timeless'? A month from now, a year from now, someone finds a post I wrote helpful or interesting? Too bad for me! I'm supposed to write great content, format it in a readable way, take and/or choose photos, all for such a narrow window? It seems to me that encourages the post and grab mentality. Saying up front that I accept the terms set down and sure don't have a better idea how payouts could be scheduled.
Tags! I read a tip about checking 'Trending' to see what the most popular tags were and see if any of them fit my post. I understand it's pretty subjective, but I looked and couldn't find a 'master list' of tags. I used 'esteem' thinking it had to do with self-confidence, 'busy' because I assumed it meant 'I've been busy, read why', and so forth. The ones that are abbreviations I don't use because they probably don't apply to me, but maybe they do?
Okay, this part isn't about retaining users, but right now it's a point of frustration for me. I think I know a good thing when I see it and I like Steemit. I'd like to support it, be a part of it, to buy Steem. I'd like to get in the SBI – what a great-sounding program! - but I don't have a Steem dollar. I am totally new to cryptocurrency so I click the link that takes me to Blocktrades. Can I buy Steem there? Where is the 'use credit card' option? I go to my wallet and click 'Buy Steem or Steem Power' and that takes me to – Blocktrades!
To end on a positive note, the main reason I expect to be staying, is the groups. The Greeter's Guild, Asapers, Payitforward, newbieresteemday, and several more that slip my mind right now. It truly is the personal touch, the human curation and comments that make Steemit a friendly place.

I am aware of the groups you mention and The Greeter's Guild and newbieresteemday try and get to new accounts, the effort I am making here is at older accounts, hopefully most of them will have had contact from one of the groups you mention before me as I am looking at accounts a few weeks older.
Love what you said about the tags, ha ha gave me a giggle. But this is a problem. There are many many tags not listed because they are not 'over' popular. These are often tags set up by a community leader for a particular niche.
You would like to get into SBI - no problem. because when I buy a unit, I also get to give one to someone else and I just happen to have a spare one, its on the way.
You do have some SBD. in your wallet if you click on your sbd you will see the option Market. This is where you can swap your SBD for Steem at the current rate. it is an internal market and there are no fees.
Because I am very new I hesitated to give my thoughts. But when I get an 'awesome' from you (and a giggle) I'm glad I did. And a 'spare' SBD? Oh my - that is so generous of you! (I'm proud and blushing at the same time.)

Just dropping by to let you know my thoughts about your efforts. You had left a comment on our latest @buddyup post and guided me over here which I'm very grateful for. It's always nice to see more projects popping up which are supporting the retention rates, that is the main problem after all.

nearly 4 months I joined this platform, many things I was learning over time, reading this as my two problems start to see bright points, 1. my goals in steemit and 2. fix financial periodically. maybe you can help fix the two points mentioned above. a hard job for you @paulag, but it seems you find happiness here, in doing all the homework, how you can control the time very well, teach me
@mrday it really depends on what you use steemit for. If you use it for a social platform, rewards are not that fantastic, but it you use it to share really valuable information then the rewards 'should' be reflected. However this is not always the case. people should consider this carefully. Personally i like to vote for 3 reasons.
Lets exclude the bots okay. But if people are looking for the big votes, then they should go and look at the content that is getting them ( you must exclude bots and circle jerks).
You are making a lot of effort @mrday, and doing a lot on discord to help and encourage others. Your reputation is growing. Try grow your SP as fast as possible, you will notice a difference as this increases. 500SP is nice, but it seems to me when you reach 1000 SP people on steemit start to notice you more

My rep is high, I have a good following, my posts do well and I am a witness. I am hoping direct engagement with more establish steemains can have an impact. So if you like I can add you to the list. that means you should join one of the initiatives I post about, or use one of the tools, or share in the comments what is and is not working for you. It is up to you how much you decide to interact, but I know interaction is the key and we can all learn from each other. I will do a weekly post where we can all check in

I hadn't used social media since MySpace and didn't get the engagement part until last Christmas. I did a lot of stupid posting until I clued in. Now Steemit is one of the most valued parts of my life.

I was particularly excited by the engagement leagues, which are actually living one tab over and will be read about in just a moment.
Even I learn something new about steemit every day, thats probably why its so interesting to me.

The Elephant in the room, as I see it, is the emergence of the bots and paid voting. It seems to go against the original ethos of Steem. I have been here for nearly a year and have enjoyed my slow but steady growth but I believe as a new users seeing the high payouts for the posts on trending coupled with their questionable quality would lead a user to think this is all a scam and the only way to Make It is to pay money into what is advertised as a free network powered the quality posts of the user.
I too am here almost a year and have grown over the time. Yes the trending page is an issued and if that what people see first, coupled with the message from steemit about rewards on the registration page

Hi Paula, thank you for taking steps to engage new members, I really like SBI and have a number of shares. I have a solution to make curation rewards better for plankton. I would love to get your feedback as a witness. I think it could be a real game-changer for Steemit.

@paulag love the initiative and it's made me realize I have been curating quite a bit, and posting practically nothing. Guess the MSP Waves radio show and developing original satire for that has taken my time from Steemit. Glad to see a small coalition forming around human interaction.
As an aside, I just read we have our one millionth account. Curious if you could use your analytics powers to see if that account is a bot. I mean, would that no be the ultimate irony?

The merit I see from this experiment is that when the retention improves, and this process gets duplicated or multiplied across different communities, then I can say that you've found a solution.
So out of that 514, how many should stay active, let's say past the 100th day, to measure the retention rate has improved. I'm still not sure for the figure to watch out for, but I do am curious of the result.
I am not 100% sure either of my metrics on this one @eastmael. As I am going through the accounts I am making an awesome database of information. but heck this is going to take me ages. I did not factor in language so many of the accounts i can not communicate with, this is one thing I found to be a surprise.
I hope these people I engage with, engage back and then in a few months, after some relationship building and so forth I can look at the drop off days and compare them to overall and other initiatives.

Blogging on steemit can be hard, but as I have said to so many others, blogging on steemit is not unlike blogging elsewhere. it takes time to grow a following and get comfortable writing. but steemit is not just about blogging, it is also about social networking. free free to use this post to network with others you have not met before, there are many comments in the thread you might find interesting.
Also do you use tools to help you on steemit? If so which ones?
I think the TLC, as you showed me today, really helps. People can work really hard on a post (whether it has value or not!) and it can be disheartening to not get any feedback or comments. Sometimes people upvote, but don't bother to comment - this can be a time issue on their part, but I know my most valued interactions are with those that bother to say something about what they liked about your post, or add to it with their own contemplation.
I've been here for a few months now and there's times I wonder why, but that's less and less so now as I'm getting into the heart of Steemit. Community engagement is definitely the most fun part. I'm enjoying writing too, more so than I have for years, and I've won two small contests for short fiction which has suprised me. Being part of Team Australia and now ecotrain is beginning to make me feel a bit more valued and heard, and the payout is welcome too. You do need to work hard though - this is really time consuming for me when I work a job as well, and I know it is for others too. Then I see really terrible posts, terrible editing, terrible content (all of my own value judgements aside - really!) and they are in the trending page, upvoted by bots - this is frustrating for sure. I can see why people would want to chuck it in in disgust!

It's a really strong community dedicated to the environment, sustainability and so on, and really supportive. I love being part of it! I agree with the Trending page and I tend not to go there unless by accident. I always go to 'new' and the people I know that write good content and support them. I also find new followers through the interactions on their posts as well, so it's great to have these communities in more ways than one! xx

This is an interesting publication. I think Steemit is a great platform and allows us to see the power of the cryptocurrency and its future in the worldwide economic. I never thought I could live on a cryptocurrency now I know

It's awful. This is due to the exchange of currency in the country where I live. Our economic situation is critical. This means that 1 STEEM is compared to the salary earned by one worker per month. That's crazy, isn't it?
Have you ever seen the Eurotrip (2004) movie (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0356150/). There's a part where the protagonists get to a country by error and they only have like 2 dollars. Well, they are treated as if they were billionaires and they stay in the most expensive hotels in the country, get fancy food and they go to a concert too (only for a few dollars)
That is our sad reality. But, somehow, call it Universe, God, Luck? Steemit appears and give us the opportunity to get income. Amazing, isn't it?

@paulag thanks for finding me through my post. To filter so many accounts is such a tall order. But with determination like yours to make Steemit a better environment, I'm sure this higher goal will keep you firmly on the war-path.
Would say Unfairness is one issue in Steemit ie. whales collaborating to upvote one another in a closed community. And what's worst is the content ie. one picture that says "Good Morning" (that sort of thing).
Then again this may be the reason why Steemit has better adoption than other blockchain names. Its definitely a double edged sword. Also collaboration like above is reflective of real world economics, where certain rich only help the other rich.
But instead of leaving Steemit, users should be more motivated to better themselves, put out good content, and support others with good intents and contents. Like you mentioned "Steemit is not a get rich quick place, it’s a slow burner. If you are here to make money fast, then you are in the wrong place. But with time and effort and not giving up, you will get there in the end."

thank you for coming over. There is for sure some circle jerking going on, but there is also a different side to that too. When I started on steemit I had no SP, like most others starting off. I found some content I liked and a year later, I still like and still vote for and I am fortunate the some of these like my content and still vote for me. But now, my account is that little bit bigger, and so is theirs. My question to you is, should I stop supporting them because we have grown?
Going back to one of your possible reasons people leave Steemit "Unable to find good relevant content". We join Steemit because we believe, and we stayed on because we understand how it works and were/are able to find interesting content that we liked and upvoted (and still like and upvote).
My simple answer to your question is a deafening YES but only if their accounts are still producing interesting and relevant content that speak to you. Like you've mentioned, the mutual support and growth go way back. This may also contribute to the feeling of nostalgia that influences the way you upvote. But if those accounts are reduced to just "Good Morning" messages, then the real question is whether we allow our head or heart to vote.
I really appreciate your content and mission here on Steemit, and I believe they appeal to many you've have invited here too. So this is my head and heart that upvoted you, and will continually upvoting for as long as they speak to me.
