Weekend-engagement week 21: It's all about food y'all!

in Weekend Experiences3 years ago

A couple of days ago I had a mid-week date with my wife Faith, during work hours of course; The best sort of date to have - A paid one! Anyway, we went for coffee and I had a cheese cake as well; I've been craving it for a few weeks; Craving sated.

So...I decided to make this week's topic food related in honour of my cheese cake. You see, food is something we all have in common despite us being spread all over the world. We all eat! If you don't you might be a freaky alien - Just saying.

I'm of the belief that good company makes average food great; I've shared many moments with friends over food and, whilst I've got nothing against great food on its own, it's quite often the people around me that make whatever we happen to be eating that much better. Having said that though, food has a stand-alone goodness - And it's food y'all have to comment on this week!

WEEK 21 TOPIC - A choice of one or all three

- Show us what you're eating this weekend and tell us about it.

- Show us your favourite food and tell us why you like it.

- Introduce us to your national food and tell us about it.

It will be best to use some pictures, preferably your own, and don't feel any pressure for the food to be restaurant-quality. I don't care if it's a bag of peanuts or a messy home-made burger, even a toasted cheese sandwich...It doesn't matter. The point of this is to share food with the community and to stay around and comment on others.

This weeks topic will run through to the early hours of Monday morning the 2nd November, so all weekend, and you'll need to drop your picture and comment below in the comments field. 👇

You can do a post relating to the topic also but don't drop the link here, that's not what this post is for! Feel free to post that, or any other weekend-related posts, into the Engage the weekend Community - A community dedicated to the weekend! I'll be curating there all weekend but the #weekend-engagement topic responses happen here.

So that's it y'all - There's not much else to say other than:

  • Answer the questions above in the comments of this post.
  • Use images preferably, your own if you can.
  • Don't post links to external posts in the comments.
  • Get it done before Monday morning.
  • Stay around to comment on the other people, that's what this post is for.

I hope to see y'all around, and am keen to see the foods you come up with.

Happy weekend y'all!

Design and create your ideal life, don't live it by default - Tomorrow isn't promised.

Be well

By the way, here's a shameless plug for @abh12345's Engagement League...Get on it y'all!

Super ...great topic this weekend, Galen 🤣 We are all foodie lover 😋...So excited, let's see how ladies talk when it comes to food 😋😆...Omg I'm thinking of few Vietnamese foods I'm proud of showing here, I really want to show all foods I love but it may takes few hours..lol, okie I'm going to pick some yea. I guess many travellers who visited Viet Nam must fall in love with our FOODS and I hope there are some big FANs of Vietnamese foods here on HIVE.

  1. Spring rolls or Goi Cuon (Photo: WorldKing)

Together with Pho, spring rolls have been named in the list of the best 30 dishes of the world by CNN. It's also known as Vietnamese spring rolls, salad rolls, or rice paper rolls) These spring rolls are refreshing, colorful, flavorful and easy to make. Dip wrappers in water, add filling ( some veggies, shrimp, egg, or pork- if you are a vegan, then use tofu instead) then wrap tightly. It's served with homemade fish sause or peanut sauce....delicious and healthy 😋

  2. Noodles (Photo: WorldKing) We have so many tasty kinds of noodles and Pho is one of the world’s classic noodle dishes that I highly recommend, it's a must-try when in Viet Nam.
    vietnamese_record_worldkings.png
    pho.jpeg
When talking about Vietnamese food, "Pho" is mentioned the most by foreigners and the country’s most famous dish. "Boiling broth is poured over a bed of soft rice noodles and sliced meat (Chicken or Beef), and topped with a handful of chopped herbs and chives. Served with squeezes of lemon, slices of red chili, sprigs of basil, and dabs of hoisin sauce." Yummy 😆your trip in VN will not complete without trying PHO PHO PHO

  3. Banh My (Bread/ Vietnamese sandwich) -(Photo- Banh My Phuong Hoi An)
"The King of Vietnamese street food" and "One of the most iconic Vietnamese dishes"

nothing_familiar_2.jpg

banh_my.jpg
Banh My is found at every corner in VN, it's delicious and reasonable price. ( you can find Banh my everywhere with only 80 cent-1usd). It is loaded several kinds of Vietnamese ham, char siu or fried pork, butter, paté, pork floss, pickled carrots, cucumber, and coriander ( you can ask to skip coriander if you can't taste it ...hahaa)
I'm a “Banh Mi-aholic” 🤣, a Banh My and A cup of coffee is a great combo to start my day 😃
I'm feeling hungry now, well I will get out to grab a Banh my now.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone !!!!

Looking at @trangbaby 's comment with sooooo many different food, everything likes so tasty and colorful. I feel that my diet is very limited, compared to the variety of the shown dishes.

 3 years ago (edited)

Vietnamese foods are spectacular, interesting and always tasty. It's not necessarily always complex food either, although they have that...A lot of simple to prepare, just good quality produce...Good honest food...And yep, very colourful. It's pretty good eating.

Thank you for promoting our foods. 😊

Thanks for such a beautiful comment 😊. I was in diet for a couple of months and lost few kilograms. However, I can't resist of delicious foods here 😅, I eat Banh my and Noodle each day, and it makes me fit ( 😅just kidding ) We love to eat everything served with veggies, Vietnamese like eating vegetables and finding fun to decorate foods so our foods look colorful 😊. I'm glad that you like those shown dishes. Have a great weekend ❤️

Of course I liked , and really the decorations and colours are stunning 🤩 thanks for sharing, and have a nice weekend too

Yes, certainly a variety of foods. I thought my Southern foods choices were varied.

You are right, and that is actually the point. We can see how many different dishes and varieties are in each culture, just amazing!

When I was on that cruise on Ha Long Bay I had a spring roll making competition with another passenger, someone from Cornwall. It was an Australia V UK spring-roll-off! I'm ashamed to say I was defeated, but pleased to say I had a lot of fun...But the prize was shared between everyone, that is, loads of spring rolls to eat so we all felt like winners. I wrote about this in a post recently.

We have so many Vietnamese people here, most of which immigrated after, or during the Vietnam-America war in the mid 1970's. So, it is a very prevalent food here. There's nothing we can't get although I think maybe the food has morphed a little since then as when I was in Vietnam it tasted a little different. That may also have something to do with the product. There's some spectacular restaurants here, and almost ever street has a take-away place.

Pho and Bahn Mi (Bahn My I guess) is very popular...I have a place directly across from my office where I go probably once a week for one or the other. It's not flashy, just good quality.

When we were in Vietnam we ate many of them, but it wold be rare for a week to go by now in which I didn't have one - I generally add chilli and sweet chilli sauce to mine.

You mention coffee...That was one of the surprises that come from our trip to VN. It was very good, and the way they prepare it, whilst different to most other places, is interesting and tasty. It was a pleasant surprise as I had expected it to be terrible for some unknown reason.

I would love to visit Vietnam to get a first hand experience on these delicacies, just imagining if I could go on a food tasting trip around the globe

A food-tour of the world would be a most welcome journey for most I think.

I've travelled around the world and one of the most enjoyable and engaging thing has been the food-culture. We usually try and immerse ourselves in the culture of the places we visit and food most often forms much of that culture...I hope you get to take a food-tour someday, and that Vietnam is on the list of places you go.

It has been added to my goal but not sure when it will happen, I would love to visit Vietnam also

I’m glad to hear that VN is on your list. You are always welcome here. Hope the Pandemic is over soon. 😊

I hope so too, I just want everything to go back to normal

Wow! I will be expecting you sooner in my country for a food tour😆😋

I hope soon yes, Vietnamese food becoming popular now. If there is no VN restaurant in youur country yet, send me the location...I will invest to open VN restaurant there...haha (kidding) For sure, it will thrive 😋

😂 😅 🤣, but that would be a great idea 😁, as far as food is concern. 🤣😜

Glad to hear that you had fun on the cruise in Ha Long Bay and it was interesting to have Spring rolls as a reward. Was it fried or fresh spring rolls?
I heard lotd of Vietnamese people living in Oz, I was told that they even have Vietnamese markets in Sydney. I have tried some Vietnamese restaurants overseas and yes the taste somehow a bit different. The owners told me that they need to change a bit to adapt with local people so the foods there not totally real Vietnamese taste. 😃 Pho and Banh are most popular and sold at every restaurant overseas.
I understand what you are telling about coffee 😊. Some of my Westerner friends make a bit coffee with a cup of fresh milk and they told me that VN coffee too strong & sweet for them when they first time tried it As the coffee is made from dark roast coffee and
condensed milk 😃
However, they tried second time and many times after they become addicted to Vietnamese Milk Coffee.

When I had the coffee shop the guy two doors down was a Vietnamese guy that really liked coffee. We got to be pretty good friends and he started giving me some grief about serving him coffee Vietnam style so we worked one out. Condensed milk and the same beans that we used for espresso, very dark. I've completely given up the milk, but I used to love making him a coffee (and one for me) every day. I still use really dark beans for my coffee at home.

Missing Vietnam (and the food soooo much!) - it's easier and cheaper for us to go to the beach in Hoi An from our home in Chiang Mai than it is to go to Bangkok. After one holiday to Koh Samet (paeng mak maaaak!) we swore to do more Vietnam. And then covid. Urgh.

I LOVE those thin egg pancakes they do in Hoi An.

Bahn Mii? There are a few shops doing it in Chiang Mai now too, but not quite the same. What is it with Thai people always needing to make bread sweet??!!

Loved your VN foodie choices and hoping for Hoi An & Da Nang April 2021.

!ENGAGE 25

Thanks @artemislives, I love Thai foods, Thai & Viet cuisines similar I think. I worked for a Thailand restaurant when I was in New Zealand so I had a chance to eat Thai foods everyday and I loved it.
It's difficult to find the real Vietnamese foods in Overseas. I heard VN & Thailan will open borders for each other soon.
Chiang Mai is on my list and I hope I will visit there soon.
Have a great weekend :)

I love spicy. Those noodles were made from my Thai Chef in New Zealand 💖
img_9513.jpg

img_9530.jpg

What's the name of these ones, they look so inviting

At least one dish I'm can prepare here is the spring roll, wow!!! That's some variety of Noddles, would love to know how to prepare them. They really look tasty.

Where are you in the queue, I can't find you?

Hey 😃, thank you for your comment here. Yes Spring rolls super easy to make anfmd healthy..🤣Well, I will write how to cook prepare noodles next time 🙂 Because noodles very cheap here (less than $1) you can enjoy a very tasty bowl of 🍜, I often eat outside 🤣
You can't find see me as I'm not in the picture 😅

Hahahaha, I will be expecting the post on Noddles. Please write it soon and tag me

Everything here looks very delicious 😭😭😭😭 those noodles looks like my weakness

I love noodles too. We have so many delicious noodles here and today I had a crab 🦀 noodle 😃
img_0786.heic

Looks sensational! I want to eat it all

That's one big bowl of Noddles would love to join you

Heheee...I already finished that bowl...🙂

All alone, that's so fast

Even I know Pho and Spring Rolls. Though the pho in your photos look better generally than what I get around here.

That Banh Mi just looks astounding. I can see why you are addicted. Almost looks too good for words.

Thanks for sharing this weekend. I wish I were there to have some pho and Banh Mi.

I learned something new today!

Thanks for always writing nice comments on my answer for the weekend topic. If you was here, my pleasure to show you food around. I guess the taste of foods you get there will not be 100% Vietnamese as they are changed a bit to adapt with locals taste 😊 I hope you enjoy it. Well, highly recommend to try Banh My next time if you have a chance.
Have a fabulous weekend and happy Halloween 👻 Halloween 🎃

You can bet I'm on the search for Banh My. Even if I have to get it when I go to Phoenix or San Diego...

Ah you are making me hungry with these! One of my all time favorite restaurants when I was growing up was a Vietnamese place that grew their own fresh veggies and herbs in the back. They made the absolute best spring rolls, so many other things. What I loved the most about the food is you didn’t feel tired or sick after, you were full and satisfied! I haven’t been to the restaurant in years, I think I will see if they are still open!

I want all of those dishes, especially a nice bowl of fresh and hot Pho!

You are so lucky it can be found near you, do enjoy and send me a plate when you buy it

Sending you Crab noodle..Yummy 🤪
img_1025.heic

This is totally unfair, how could you do this to me😭😭😭😭😭

Hmmm, I know how you feel, I almost fell into my phone beholding it😩😌

Hahaha I'm not going to fall, I can withstand anything she sends😋

Wow It's interesting to hear you was fed some Vietnamese foods when childhood 😊. Guess you have tried many kinds of VN foods. Glad that you love it. A nice bowl of hot Pho is a great treat during these raining and cold day huh 🙂
Thanks for engaging on here. Have a wonderful weekend

All that looks delicious. I have never tried Vietnamese food. If it tastes like other Asian food I have tried (Chinese, Philippine) I can eat it all. I love the combination of ingredients

Vietnamese food tends to have similarities to Chinese, but then an identity all of it's own as well. It's very nice though, the flavours and textures and I can't recall ever having bad Vietnamese food. The most simple form of it is the spring roll and Bahn Mi I guess...Readily available and such amazing taste for such a simple combination of ingredients. I hope you get to try some one day. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Thanks. I hope so too. I guess I'll have to leave the country to do that. We do not have any Vietnamese restaurant in town and I am not sure we have many in the country. There might be some in Caracas and other big cities, but restaurants in general, even local ones, are a vanishing business these days.
I do admire the apparent simplicity of many Asian dishes. It amazes me what they can accomplish with the ingredients they use.

My hope is that things improve to the point that you guys can either relocate to a better scenario or that things improve in your location. It must be difficult to have watched the decline.

We hope so too. Before covid-19 we were certain leaving was the best option. Now with all the complications, we have to wait to see if and how the rest of the world improves their condition. Venezuela is far from getting out of the hole, even without the pademic

The way you keep your attitude positive is a credit to you, I can't imagine it's easy. It speaks highly of you and your family.

Well I'm sure you will love it 😊
Thanks for your comment 😍

I like spring rolls fell in love with them in of all places Tennessee just north of Nashville, go figure they were great though and I have loved them ever since.

Thanks for commenting on here. I'm happy to hear that you like spring rolls and so do I. Its fresh, healthy and delicious 🤪

Wow!.
I've never had a chance to eat Vietnamese food. There are a couple of restaurants in town so I will definitely go to one of them whenever this pandemic lets us move around freely again. Your photos look stunning, especially the spring rolls and the sandwiches.

Mention my name you will get 50% discount 🤣 just kidding
Wow, a couple of restaurants, where is it? :))
I hope you will enjoy the cuisine 😊

This is the one I was thinking of. Now closed due to Covid, but hopefully, I will be able to go in a few weeks.

Hope The restaurant will open soon, looks pretty 🙂

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Vietnamese food is fantastic - I have a friend in Australia who made this meat stuff that was wrapped in lettuce leaves and damn it was great.

You just reminds me of Beef grill in wild betel leaf ( I guess) We call Bo La Lot....Its super tasty and damn good

bo_nuong_la_lot.jpg

This looks so good, you are making everyone feel hungry

Ooh wee! @trangbaby bringin the heat. Ok.. I'm starving now.

Thank you @dandays for comment 🙂 Beat the Heat, Go to Eat 🤣

I knew I shoulda took a picture of breakfast--doh!

It's what happens when I go to breakfast starving--no time for pics.

Keep the heat comin @trangbaby!

Thank you. I will 😊 Need the heat here after a month of Rain & Storm ☺️
I didn't often take photos of foods I ate before but now on I will 😀for many purposes

Hive have thought me to be always ready to take a shot of both food and other nice stuff, it comes in handy

Certainly.

I've yet to get this phone to serve as both a camera and fork at the same time. After seeing those food pics, all I could think was fork.

Lol, a little practice can help once in a while, before you know it you will be used to taking photos of your food

Hello. What a colorful arrangement of food. I have not eaten the traditional Vietnamese foods. I do love Spring Rolls. But I don't remember if they were Vietnamese. I mostly stick with cooked meats and veggies.

What I do love to sample is sandwiches. What is PORK FLOSS?

To have street food on every corner at a reasonable price when you go out is very convenient. Thanks so much for sharing.

Thank you @justclickindiva. Glad that you like those dishes and esp spring rolls. Hope you will try Vietnamese cuisine soon one day and I'm sure you will love it.

!ENGAGE 25

Most food lovers who have visited Spain have tried Paella, probably the most popular food from the country. As much as I love eating it I want to talk to you about Fideuá. This is basically as a Paella but instead of rice, you use fideos (thin, short angel hair pasta).

image.png

Although it is served all year long in restaurants, it is a summer dish you can find in any beach restaurant in the country. I am not a great cooker but I love trying it myself although every once in a while we just order it from one of the local restaurants. It is a fantastic dish to eat with friends or family outside on a summer sunny day.

If you feel like trying yourself, here's a link with instructions on how to prepare one, as well as the corresponding video. Hope you enjoy it!

Ohhhhhhh. I'm a fatboy and a big eater. I can tell I'm going to like this week's category.

That looks so good. I can see prawns and shrimp and muscles and pasta and just pure goodness!

So is this an expensive dish or is it priced for the masses? I have definite favorites in both categories :)

Thanks for playing early this week! You are probably going to shape my response a bit. I'm thinking!

My inner fat man is going to come out with this weeks topic lol.

LOL. Inner fat man. Made me chuckle. !ENGAGE 10

Lol, inner fat man.

I've been thinking about this topic for a while...I hope it turns out to be a good one. Who doesn't like food right? How could it not be good?

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

I feel ya bro. @bigtom13 "The Fatboy" comment... Lmao.

Constant battle for me being a trucker. Some end up being 400 pounds after a few years of it.

I am holding steady at 225-230 lb. range. 40-50 over for only being 5'6" in height.

Wow! This is serious, no wonder you guys are almost the size of the truck. 😳

I seen a driver couple weeks back. Sitting on 2 regular sized chairs. Filling both of them at a diner table with enough food on it for 3 people.

I was gonna snap a picture. But felt sad for the guy and moved along.

Lack of self control, food addiction is real. I usually only eat one time a day. And a light snack in the afternoon/early evening.

😂 😅 🤣,whoa! OMG! That's really funny but I know you are at least almost it's size 🙄😃😆😄

I'm sitting right on 250 at 6'4". I'd like to be rid of 25 but...

Not really expensive, in a regular restaurant you may pay €15 per person. There are two or three food manufacturers who sell them here in Spain, not sure if you can find them in the US or Australia but you need to complement the pasta with the seafood as all they provide is the broth. You can give it a try following the instructions from the video, it is not hard to do.
Here's the link to one of the only companies I would recommend to purchase from.

My stuff never looks pretty like that but I'll give it a try. It just looks scrumptious!

Thanks for the link.

15E...Just under $25AUD...Not too badly priced. I figure it'd come in decent sized serves so doesn't seem too costly. I'd say here in Australia paella is probably more prevalent; I've certainly never heard of, or seen, Fideuá.

It's on my radar now though and will give it a try if I can find it.

yes, it looks like seafood spaghetti, and spaghetti is almost always good.

Oh yes - I remember this! I had a spanish boyfriend back in the day who had grown up in Manilla before California and Melbourne, Australia) and HIS MOM MADE THIS. A standard Sunday after church 'thing".

Those noodles are incredibly common here in Thailand too and we use them all year round as "junk food" and food emergency staples - they just need to sit in hot water for a few moments and they're good to go.

Thanks for some nice memories today!

!ENGAGE 25

Your Sunday after church thing sounds more exciting than mine. I just had boring old roast beef or chicken or pork that we'd raised. It was actually quite good, and my grandmother busted her ass every Sunday. She may have made a rollover in her grave with that line :)

Yum!

I love paella and am pretty sure I'd like this too! I've never heard of it though, I guess maybe it takes a back-seat role to the more famous paella. It certainly looks good though and I can imagine the taste, pasta instead or rice.

This is a good start to the weekend topic mate, well done!

God! I would definitely try Fideuá ! I'm not a rice lover so 🤷🏻‍♀️ hahaha it's a definitely YES to this one

Not a rice lover?! That's blasphemy to me 🤣. Maybe I eat too much rice!

Blocking user*** hahahahhaha

I love the dish it looks so tasty but I didn't get the names of the ingredients used in preparing in according to the video, or maybe I'm not familiar with the names I heard apart from pasta, onion, tomatoes, garlic. Please list the ingredients

It's not hard to do, if you check the link from the post there are written instructions with the ingredients.

Thanks, will do that

You did it very well to present the fideua, as a lot of people heard of pallea, but not so of fideua.

The color of it alone makes me want to gobble some of it! What are the black items in your photo by the way?

Those are mussels, but the good part is you can add any seafood you like on top of the pasta.

I haven't had a good dish of mussels in a long time. I did get to enjoy a little seafood this summer but mussels wasn't on the menu at the time. Next year for sure!

Wow! This looks delicious, I just feel like having a taste, I'm tempted. 😋

Damn that looks delicious! I haven't had a Paella dish in years! I think the last one I had was in Puerto Rico and it was absolute amazing. This here looks incredible, I think the thin angel hair pasta would add such a nice element to it that I can already know I would love it. It seems cool that it's one of those delicious dishes that flies under the radar.

There's a very American, Boston lunch food that a lot of people don't know but it's equally delicious. A roast beef sandwich with cheese, mayonnaise and barbecue sauce. I'm not a huge beef fan but a roast beef sandwich is one thing I have to get at least once a year because the combination of all 3 are fantastic! Most people that come to the Boston area get lobster or something more popular but we've got our fair share of equally delicious things that aren't as famous to people who don't live in the area, like your dish. I want one now hehe

I love trying local delicious jewels not many people know. Popular food is great to try but at a certain point, the offer is so big, only a few places keep authenticity. I'd love to try that Boston Lunch!

it looks good, I love pasta, okay i just like to eat, but it does look very good, and something I would likely try at a restaurant.

Very interesting... It looks like something my @pooky-jax would like.

Only recently, in the last 10 years or so, Have I started eating things that I never thought I would.

I did not even try crab legs until I was in my 40's. Boy was I missing out on some great foods.

So I would probably try this..?

I'm with bigtom on this one. No crab meat for 40 years??

Alaska snow crab --my favorite seafood.

Yep. Still gives me the heeebeee jeeebeees crackin' those giant sea bugs open to get to the meat. But Oh So Good dipped in sweet butter. Soooo Goood.!!

Such an interesting pallet. See, I like crab without anything. No butter, lemon, nothing. When it melts without anything.. oh man.

You need to try some Dunganess from northern Puget Sound. I think it's better than Snow Crab. Just sayin'

It's the deshelling that goes with dungeness Tom. That and the sharp armor they got.

Yep. You've got to work for the good stuff with them.

Didn't try Crab until you were 40? You were culturally deprived my friend. Just sayin'

Hahahaha am sorry I couldn't hold the laughter

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Paella looks yum and impressive huh We don't have any Spanish Restaurant here 😐 Well, I may find it somewhere else hopefully. 😍

It was Christmas prep and test this weekend, to see if Smallsteps can handle some special gingerbread cookies. at the very least, she enjoyed the baking and the taste of them :) I baked you something special too!

hahaha, I am not gonna ask who was the one who ate it!

Did @galenkp make a reply? If he did I haven't seen it yet...

On what?

The cookie Taraz sent you.

I just ate it, no comment required. Mum taught me never talk with my mouth full. :)

I'll remember that.

I love Paella!

I've never eaten this dish before. It looks delicious. You say it's a summer dish, but it looks like it could be a fulfilling meal in the cooler months. Angel hair pasta I love. It would probably pair well with other types of seafood and probably and meat, perhaps chicken.

The dish looks like what I've eaten before in my country as Shrimp Creole. But's prepared with rice.

Thanks for sharing.

There are a bunch of different varieties, the nice thing is you can add seafood, meat, veggies, or whatever you want.

OMG! This is really cool @galenkp,
well I might be a gourmand but there is a particular food I love eating very very much that makes me feel like yummy! yum! yum! 😂🤣😅
Although it's my native food called
ekpangnkukworecipemainphoto.jpg

Ekpang Nkukwo,
in case you are wondering why the name of my food is so conk I'm from the coastal southern side of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom state to be precise, the name of my food sounds funny right ? You can just leave it to me if you don't know how to pronounce it 🤣😂😅😜 Yeah! Has it sounds funny so is the rhythm in your mouth when taken in, 😋 ho!! @galenkp you are making me feel like I have it tabled in front of me now. 😭
I Have really loved this Food right from when I was a little child, my parents know that I can joke with other food but when it comes to this very one ahh! Capital no, well, mom cooks it to suite my tastes well. It comprises of grated water yam, fresh ugu leaf, periwinkles, stockfish, crayfish, assorted dry fish, palm oil and seasonings you can even add more to suite your own taste.😋 😉

Oh yeah - let's seem some great AFRICAN foods - my heart hurts to see the terrible political posts from naija friends. My cousin lived and worked for a long time in Senegal and eventually married a Senegalese man (they now live in Holland) and she cook some AMAZING food for me! Using millet.

How about the #Naija community get an African cooking challenge going in the Foodies Bee Hive community?? @starstrings01 - make it so!!!

!ENGAGE 25

I will see how I can do that soon. 😊... Will speak to the hive naija community leader but I think he would prefer it in the #Naija community.

That would be really nice, it will be really fun 😅

I hope you can cook, I would love to see your entry if the contest comes through

Me?😳 Oh! I can't really say.

Lol, really

🍲🙄😳😝😜😆

I've not really tasted it, maybe its because I have not been opportune to travel to Akwa Ibom. It really looks great and yummy, will try it out one day

I've often wondered about the different foods in Africa and how far one needs to travel before it become totally different from place to place. I guess each region would have it's particular foods that are available and they will be prepared depending on what spices and produce is around the area.

That's right, I intend to make a comprehensive post based on this topic

Yeah! That's the real fun about it.

You don't need to travel to have a taste , it's really fun and easy making it.

Really

Yeah! For sure, you can cook it to your taste with my recipe 😌

That's ok

So it's a seafood dish which indicates it originates near the sea I guess. Is it eaten with something else, like rice or something? Or maybe just by itself.

Its very self and a chilled juice will ring a bell on the head.

I see...Interesting. I'd like to try it someday.

I bet you won't regret it 😂😅🤣

Hahaha I don't know how to pronounce that!!

But looks really really good! I think I can feel the smell from here

Hmmm, thanks but don't admire it too much so I don't get looking for it, I don't even know you might just start your invention on mine.

Hahaha I'm a free woman I can do whatever I want to! Then that the Ekpang Nkukwo be it!

😂 😅 🤣 You are funny,or are you a magician?

I can be both 🤷🏻‍♀️

😂 😅 🤣 😜

Ohhhhhh, that looks good! I mean seriously.

Please don't take this wrong, and it's certainly no knock on your food. But the first time I looked at that dish I thought "That would really, really look good with some slices of smoked sausage in the sauce." I still think so.

I'd eat that in a second.

Yeah! I actually said you can also add more to suite your taste. 😁

This dish looks hearty. I can see the leaves, but not the various seafood chunks or pieces. Are they cut up into small pieces? Yams, or sweet potato, I'm familiar with. But water yam. That's different. We all have some childhood favorites we remember. Mine is beans and rice cooked to perfection by mom.

Wow! You must be a mummy's pet. 😂🤣
As for the seafood chunks, the moment the food is served, it becomes a game😂😅, wondering how? The periwinkle is swallowed up by the grated water yam and as a result of this you might end up finishing your food off with much, less or no seafood. Luck counts on this one 😂😋😁

Seems like it. Thanks for the explanation, I think, lol.

😁 Thanks for your comment I really appreciate 🙏

Pizza and Beer, food of the gods! As much as i love my meat there’s something about this veggie pizza with spinach on it that I love. @diveratt loves it too. Today they were an hour and 10 mins late delivering it so it lasted all of 2 mins

You making that for us when we come over to snorkel and check out PH??

Damn well hope so!! LOL 🤣

!ENGAGE 15

I can order it lol might take a while to get delivered

You are already familiar with their late delivery, its better to order ahead of time

we ordered at 11am for delivery at 2. lol this is the philippines so at 2:34 thay apologised and said it would be 15 mins and then it arrived around 3:10. Unbelievable.

Haha hahaha, that's an additional 21minutes to the time. That's poor customer service

Bloody top nosh that! I've got mine in the oven right now as it turns out. Pizza.

Nice work lads, enjoy!

still stuffed, as it was late I won't be able to eat dinner so just some nibbles tonight

Not a bad thing.

We're finished. Pizzas were great and just had a little apple crumble for dessert. I'm feeling pretty content. Been watching P1 too, good to see a full track of cars. Quali to come now. Let's see how it goes.

I won't mention who was fastest ;)

Yep, notice I didn't?

Was surprised the McLaren's were so far down the order.

What were those baby duck fetus called? Maybe add them to pizza to make the gag reflex lessen...

Lol...Balut.

OMG!!! I just need a slice with chilled juice, its making damn hungry now

was delish i am still stuffed. Their tactic of making you wait an extra 70 mins means no talking while eating just eat

Hahahaha that's a very good business tactics

i barely chewed mine i was so hungry

But you enjoyed it, that's a bonus

Ever wondered if you could take it internasally and just avoid the chewing?

Yeah, man. I just snorted a slice of pizza cause I was so hungry.

That Pizza looks quite colorful indeed!

so good, so so good

Damn. That looks really tasty. I'd just as soon have some meat on my pizza, but once in a while a nod toward sanity is a good idea.

I REALLY expected you to come with cheesecake. Silly me.

lol i sent @galenkp a pic of my cheesecake the other morning. Gotta change it up

Pretty much the Go To, Fall Back, Easy Fix,
Anytime, Quicky Meal.

Always good, and better with beer.

100%. Thats how I feel. And you can do it so many ways. Can't beat pizza and beer. Food of the Gods!

You never can't be wrong with a pizza 🍕 an hour and 10mins late wtf! Hoping that pizza was delivered for free

it was. We were like zombies when it arrived and ripped it to pieces

That's really funny 🤣😂😅

Ah what's better than a simple pizza and beer combo? Love it!

i think its one of human civilisations greatest achievements, well at least it was yesterday.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

That veggie pizza looks fantastic and delicious @scubahead, Beer and Buddy what a great spend on weekend and during these raining days

yup was good. we demolished it in next to no time

an hour and 10 minutes late?? Did they take the scenic route?

wasn't even a last minute order,I ordered at 11am they said as the oven wouldn't be ready would be 2pm earliest i sad ok. 3:10 it arrived. Welcome to the philippines

Pizza is food of the youth. Just ask any young adult. Any variety, meat or meatless. I love it also. My favorite is all meat with spinach. I'm not a huge fan of onions on my pizza.

I'm about 50 so I guess I'm young at heart 🤣

That's all that matters. And you can drink all the spirits you want with it. Won't hold it against you :)

What a topic! I think no wrong answers here, no?? 🤪 Food
So here is my today's lunch, it can not be more recent photo

IMG_20201030_133616.jpg

Mussels! I prepare them with garlic, parsley and lemon, boil all together few minutes and ready to eat.

It is important to buy them fresh, and when you clean them if there is some broken or already open, it has to be thrown away.
Luckily, before I ate them I took the photo 🤣
I have one working afternoon now to start, I will be back in the evening 🍻

Your food looks so fresh I can see it through the photos!!!!! Looks so good!!!

Thanks honey, it was so fresh that I went to buy them, came home and prepared to eat.
I am back from work, I am going to read the comments 🤪

Hahaha you need to eat before reading !!! Cause everything here make you hungry

I know 😭
🤣

I'm hungry already AGAIN!!

At least it's day time in your place 😇
It's midnight here.... although last night (at 3 in the night) I went to the kitchen and eat 🤦🤦🤦🤦

Reeaalllyyyy, that means you can eat a whole building and still not get satisfied 😳🙄

hello dear friend @ mipiano
You look great, they look very delicious, I appreciate that you let us know their way of preparation. Enjoy it a lot

It is very easy to prepare them, the more work is to clean them before the boiling

IMG_20201030_133005.jpg

This is moment I put them into the pot

Nope, there's certainly no wrong answers...Food is right, not wrong. :)

I've never cooked mussels but heard that if they do not open in the cooking process then have to be thrown away? I've eaten many though, mainly on spaghetti marinara at Italian restaurants...So good. It always seems a treat food to me, but here you are eating it for an end of week lunch. #nicework

Yes, you heard well. If some do not open after cooking, don't eat it.
All the seafood if good only if fresh. We also like shrimps, as well with garlic and parsley

Shrimps...We call the prawns and yep, I'm with you there too...So good! :)

How good is food in general! Good company, good food...that's what life is all about!

SAVE_20201030_233208.jpg

I mean these. Are these called shrimps or prawns in English?

Yes, company is very important as well

Here I Australia we call them prawns. I think in America they're called shrimp. Same thing, different names.

Ok then, just name difference.

Shrimps in North America, I didn't know that they called prawns, I know something new today

And in your country, are they gambas or langostinos?

 3 years ago (edited)

It's an Australian thing I guess, although I think the word prawn is also used in the UK.

I found this online somewhere.

Shrimp possess lamellar, plate-like gills and a set of claws on their front two pairs of legs. Prawns, in comparison, have branching gills, and claws on three sets of their legs, with the front pair being noticeably larger. One nuanced visual distinguisher setting shrimp apart is the distinct three segments of their bodies, with the middle segment overlapping the front and rear portion. Prawns, lacking such body segmentation, have straighter bodies than shrimp.

All that aside, we don't use the word shrimp here very often.

I'd call them shrimp. Though prawns are used in a lot of places.

That particular batch looks like another delicacy, crawfish which are a fresh water shrimp.

There is actually quite a lot of very good shrimp near here. The northern end of the Gulf of California is famous for shrimp and there is a shrimp farm about 80 miles from here. They raise some really good shrimp and you can buy 1 kg bricks of fresh frozen shrimp that are very tasty.

Hehee seems you like seafoods 🙂

same same but different 😃

Heh, yes I like seafoods

So what about crayfish? course that's what we call it over here in Nigeria.

Ohhhhh. Fresh seafood. I don't get near enough of it. We are 350 miles (500 km) from the ocean and I honestly don't trust fresh seafood here. But I do love it!

Your mussels look simple and beautiful. Just wonderful.

This summer in my travels I got to eat a fair amount of fresh seafood, it was just heavenly!

Haaaa...

Fresh

spelled S.P.O.I.L.E.D.

Fresh to me would be still dripping with the water they were snatched out of.

Not 3 days after in a dirty old ice bucket right.?

My point exactly! I was in Newport, Oregon for a couple days this summer and ate lots of stuff that was swimming yesterday. It was wonderful.

Oh, mussels!.
They bring me such great memories from my young years when I would go to the beach with my uncle to get them from the rocks.
There used to be plenty and unfortunately, you can hardly find them now as there is too much crowd all over.
Your's look delicious!

A friend of mine from Galicia said the same, that when he was a child, they used to collect a lot from the rocks.

Ah some fresh mussels that looks delicious! I haven't had a good bowl of mussels in many years, I think. I could get it locally but my wife doesn't like sea food so when I eat it I don't get a kiss for a day or two 🤣 not a worthy sacrifice yet!

Hahaha, so best not to take the risk ;-)
Actually the mussels don't have that strong taste, the shrimps/prawns yes. And even with garlic, as I prepare , you can imagine 🤪🤐

See your lunch, I want mussels so bad😋...That was my favorite one when i was in New Zealand

The vietnamese dishes you posted are really fabulous, mine is so simple compared to yours. But mussels are we tasty and good, we like them

😋😋😋, I don't really know how it tastes but I feel like having a bite. It doesn't really matter if I am late 🙄, you know nah👀, you can be your brothers keeper. 😋

Now mussels is one seafood I've never tried. It looks like oysters and prepared the same, boiled in spices.

Boiled in salty water with garlic, parsley and lemon. Believe me, you would not regret tastinh them

Hello! Is it finally Friday? This week passed very quickly. It remains to work out the last shift today. And tomorrow morning after the shift, we go to the nationwide testing for coronavirus. Food. I hadn’t even thought that I would cook this weekend. Probably it will be stewed potatoes with mushrooms, pancakes and something from the first courses. Perhaps it will be kharcho soup. As for my favorite food? I love bograch. This is the Hungarian national first dish. It is prepared from 4-5 types of various meats and smoked meats, hot red pepper sauce and a lot of hot paprika are added. In Uzhgorod (in Ukraine) there is a restaurant that serves bograch in bread in a very original way.

I also love sushi. We try to mainly cook them at home.

IMG_20170906_220204.jpg

I also love canned sweet corn with soy sauce. And frog legs. Have you eaten frog legs? this is just a heavenly pleasure!

IMG_20170915_160927.jpg

National food. The national dish of Ukraine (this is my homeland) is definitely bacon, borscht and dumplings. Borscht is a red soup made from beets, cabbage, potatoes and tomato paste. And dumplings are something similar to dumplings. Dumplings are molded with various fillings: stewed cabbage, potatoes, cottage cheese, berries. And the national dish of Slovakia (this is the country to which we moved for permanent residence) is cheese dumplings. The dough is made from potatoes. I make small dumplings and sprinkle with bacon, onion and sheep's cheese "feta cheese". Incredibly delicious. Fuh. It's time to stop. Thanks for Friday!))) I'm going to get ready for my shift!)) Have a nice evening!)

Hi @sokoloffa how is the civid in your country, hope you guys are safe.

I have never seen a bograch but it looks tasty in that bread. You have some very nice dish there, we don't eat frog in my country so I have no idea how it would taste like. Have a nice time at work

Omg ! I can't with this topic, all your food looks really good! That bograch, ohhh so nice to see, it's like a pleasure to my eyes, this is like porn for me guys, LOL!

Btw I haven't try frog legs, lol

this is like porn for me guys, LOL!

Hahahaha, but have you tried frog like any part

Nooo 🥴 what about you????

Noooo never even thought of it

I dare you ;) Hahahaha

Nooo I'm not sure I can give into that dare unless its served to me without my knowledge of what it really is

I have tried it before the taste made me jumped like a frog 🐸😋

Hahahaha is similar to what?

Hmmm, 🤔 I might not really get what it tastes like as it's been long I travelled home. I prefer it roasted.

Yeah I don't know about frogs legs lol

Would you try one ? 👀

I have never tried frog legs 😅
And I don't know if I would try it 🤔 I am just a bit scared from frogs 🤣🤦

Don't worry, once they are cooked they are harmless! :)

But still...😂

Haha...Yeah I get it. I was like that with escargot, snails, when I was in Paris once. Still, I ate one, then another, and before long I'd polished off a dozen. I'm not sure if I'd eat more, they were ok, but far from the best thing I've ever eaten.

Mmm , snails sounds interesting, I assume that taste similar to mussels, so that would be a green light for me to try

They're a little chewy. Maybe rubbery might be a better word for it. They were sautéed in garlic, butter and parsley I think, maybe something else also but I couldn't read the menu as it was in French. I can speak a little but not too much. I'd say give it a go if you can...Same with the frogs legs...Life's too short not to have some experiences like this.

Snails are very tasty, you will love it when you try it

I'd way rather frogs than snails, I can tell you that for a fact :)

I've eaten a few escargot, but thank you God it was when I was still drinking. Shot of Jack, eat a snail. Repeat as needed.

Sorta reminds me of Rocky Mountain Oysters. Lot of people that think that's a delicacy but I needed serious beer consumption to get them done.

I won't say they were my favourite thing and to be completely honest we were sitting in Moulin Rouge watching the show at the time so...Probably would have eaten anything. 🤣

Cooking them does take the jump right outta them. LoL

Lol...If one jumped off the plate right before you ate it I'd say it was cooked rare wouldn't you say?

Right... And the ones that I have had over the years were all a bit chewy. But surprisingly tasty.

I've not tried them. Had the chance at Paris one time, decided to go for the snails.

I have heard of bograch but have not tried it. I like the way they serve it in the bread...I like bread, so anything involving bread gets my vote! :)

I really like how different countries have their own flavours, ingredients and ways to put foods together - Variety is the spice of life they say. I also like the way you seem to do a lot of cooking at home as many these days have lost the art of it, or are just lazy. The concentration on your face making that sushi...Now that's determination!*

I've been to France and know they eat frogs legs but have not tried it. I didn't know it was something people ate elsewhere so you have enlightened me on that. It looks like it's deep fried in bread crumbs or something?

Once thing I want to comment on though is that outdoor cooking area. I assume you have a kitchen, but I'm really glad you added that photo...It's probably how cooking was done a long time ago, more outside than in as houses probably didn't have kitchens like they do now. It's rustic and outdoorsy which I love. I also like BBQ's and so this appeals to me. Thanks for adding that one.

@galenkp - most Thai houses now have 2 kitchens - an indoor "western" kitchen and the traditional Thai outdoor kitchen, specially for smoking, cooking over a fire, pigs on spits and the super-spicy food that chokes you with fumes if you cook it inside.

We have 2 kitchens here too and am currently starting planning to BUILD my own home, which will feature a wood fired oven in the outdoor kitchen zone. Sometimes it feels almost french provincial or italian in its vibe. Also hugely practical in a very hot climate!

That's fast becoming the norm here although I feel it's more for wank-factor than any real need to have an outdoor kitchen. Much of what people do here is to keep up with the Jones's or for some deluded belief that what they have and get relates directly to their sense of validity.

When done for the right reasons, with the intent of actually getting used the benefits are clear, as you point out.

You're about to start building your own home? That sounds exciting. I would love to do so and it could be a possibility at some stage although we have no plans to do so right now. I'd build something simple though, nothing like what people tend to want these days. I'm a simple person though and would only need what I need, and would be careful to think ahead into the future.

It would be good to incorporate a wood-fired oven into your house, some external benchtop, sink and running water. It would mean the heat of cooking stays out side and the smells of course too as you mention. I think this is one of the main reasons for the outside kitchen in the first place. I'm sure you'll come up with something suitable capturing views, light and breezes perfectly to maximise the house's effectiveness.

But would you try frog legs? 👀

I love that outdoor cooking area too, mainly because brings a lot of good memories for me ;) everything it's more enjoyable like that, I meant with people but food too taste and flavor are stunning!!

I'd give it a try...I've eaten some fairly strange foods in my time and am happy to give most things a try...I have my limits though; There's things I wouldn't eat for sure.

I've eaten some insects in the past... I was trying food from an indigenous culture, it wasn't so bad some of them tasted like chicken, lol.

I once swallowed a bug when it come in through my visor at 100kph when I was riding my motorbike...It didn't taste so good. I should have had my visor closed so it was my fault. :)

Hahahaha omg but no raw insects !!! iuck, totally your fault

Occupational hazard of a motorcycle rider.

I haven't had them but there is a popular Mexican dish for sale at the baseball stadium in Seattle. Candied fried grasshoppers. I understand they are really tasty.

It's a traditional Mexican dish in the center of the big part of Mexico. I've never had the opportunity, but will one day.

I love that picture of all the giant cook pots. I bet that place just smells like heaven all those flavors and aromas.

Yeah, I'll bet that whole courtyard smells really good. I'm getting hungry again!

My father's family lived in Russia on the Volga so some of that is very familiar to me. It looks fancier when you present it than when I ate it :)

I have had frog legs. When I was a teenager I got a chance to 'gig' some bullfrogs and my grandmother cooked up the legs for us. She made them taste pretty darn good :)

We ate Borscht and Dumplings fairly regularly when I was growing up. I have to tell you it wasn't my favorite dish :) Not that I didn't eat it, it just was not my fav.

Oh Man.!

Stew..!

Always good, anything goes, creativity in a pot, boiling and hot!

But I gotta bail on the Sushi, I am outta here... gag reflex LoL

Just not for me. Carry on ya'll. It's all good. :-)

Oh man the Bograch looks delicious in that bread there! I would totally eat a few of them for sure. All of the food you shared looks like stuff I would eat....except frogs legs! Lol sorry :D

When it comes to food, I come to mind. 😂 I love cooking as I love to eat cook. And those who eat my food say my hand is delicious. I guess this side of mine is like my grandmother. Turkish cuisine has a wide range. But I want to tell one of the dishes I made. That’s why I had to go down to my phone archive.

378A393C-602B-449A-9ACF-7F3D9616EAE8.JPEG

Stuffed grape leaves is a dish of Ottoman origin. It made with a variety of interior materials including bulgur and rice. It is usually a food made with white cabbage, collard greens and grape leaves. It can be made with olive oil, minced meat or meat.

img_3529.jpeg

It is a very demanding meal. First the filling is prepared. The filling usually consists of rice, onion, garlic, tomato paste, olive oil and spices. And lots of greenery. Then leaves are boiled. The hardest part is wrapping. Stuffed should be wrapped thinly.

B03AB009-6D2D-4862-8970-A6FEF7925E3A.JPG

If you wrap your stuffed leaves thinly, you are ingenious! This dish is cooked on special occasions.

Oh, I guess it’s been a long article. 😊

I have been meaning to make dolmades FOREVER! We have a grape vine here in Chiang Mai Thailand which never gets grapes but has fabulous leaves. And I love Greece and would be living in Itea (Gulf of Corinth near Delfi) if I wasn't here in Thailand.

I feel a weekly project and a foodie post coming on!!!

Gorgeous. Making me hungry. !ENGAGE 25

Grape leaves. You can make great stuffed with them! :)

Hmm, I'm not sure I've had this although there is a Greek variation that I've had called dolmades, or some such thing. Pretty good stuff so I'd imagine that these would equally as good.

Are these eaten with any other foods or just as they are,by themselves?

Thanks for sharing. I'd like to try these one day.

Usually served with yogurt.

Oh yeah, that would be good I think. Now, if only I could find some around here.

My mom did it for me. I will eat soon. :)

I was going to say if you've never had stuffed grape leaves you're missing out!

I agree, they're good tucker.

Absolutely!

Ohhhhhh. Those look sooooo good. I really like the variety, too. So far as I know we have nothing like that here. Cabbage Rolls are probably the closest I can think of. Cabbage Rolls were comfort food from my mother :)

I thought I was going to really like this topic but I can see that there is going to be a problem. I am absolutely starving and it's about an hour before my normal breakfast time :)

How long does it take to make them from start to feeding? Looks to me like it's not a 'damn I'm hungry for stuffed grape leaves' and whip some up for lunch.

Cabbage rolls, yeah, I've eaten them and probably the closes thing to this I can think of. I mentioned dolmades, the Greek version, but cabbage rolls might be more similar I think.

My mom just made death stroke cabbage rolls. There was a community festival that she made them for every year and we allways got the rejects. Which were just plain tasty :)

Cabbage rolls ..That's a Polish thing right? Hmm, maybe not though as I saw them made on an English cooking show recently. Maybe universal.

Cabbage is one of my favorite vegetables. :)

Cabbage is a much underrated vegetable and done right can be amazingly tasty. I like it although have had cabbage done badly that was...Well, bad. :)

I do not believe that cabbage is consumed very little! :D

😅😂🤣, that's funny

I have tried something similar but it isn't exactly the same, I would love to try this

I would like you to try. :)

I'm just getting to know this dish for the first time, its not known around here but we have a dish that is prepared with wrapped leaves which is bean cake but its commonly called moi moi and its made from grounded beans img_20200919_082550_800.jpg
I have not really perfected my hands in wrapping it but its a work in Progress

It's interesting how different cultures have similar foods, just different.

Yea, that's right. This is a good medium to learn more

looks different and similar! :)

That's right

Oh you right looks very similar to Hallacas

IMG_20201030_085501_484.jpg

Btw I've been hear that name before moi moi, and it was a conversation about food but I don't remember exactly what was !!

It's made with grounded beans, pepper, crayfish, fish or cooked egg and some other stuff

Oh man I'm already hungry!

So sorry, go eat something as @bigtom13 did then come back to the salivating league

Already did a few minutes ago.... 😭

Yeah. It's the right choice! I'm probably good for another couple hours...

🤣😂😅 You don't have to we have enough to go around 😅🤣

What do you suggest? Should I lick my screen?

Those are bigger than the local tamale. I had to go back a ways but found a picture that I took of one that I brought home from the Tamale Festival.

image.png

That's salsa that I added, obviously.

Ohhhhh I have definitely tried them before !!!!

Hahahaha go big or go home!

Not a big fan of these. But then again, I have only ever had a few over the years from the "Roach Coach" food trucks that come into the shipper/receivers parking lots with the funny horns beeping & playing the yiy yiy yiy aye music... LoL

Oh, man. You have been culturally deprived. Crafted Tamale are close to as good as it gets.

We had a Mexican guy worked for us on the farm for years. When we butchered hogs she came out first day and trimmed all the meat off the heads (and other stuff) but she froze it and each of us got two dozen tamale on Christmas Eve. It was heavenly, I'm telling you.

Those look good too. The ingredients sound like something I'd really like.

You definitely like it when you taste it

Yeah! This is really great and delicious, the leaf gives it a special flavour. I have been wanting to eat it for a while now. 😋

You can find it in any fast food close to you or better still you can prepare it to your taste

I don't know if you know of Liziqi, she is a very popular Chinese YouTuber who makes videos on all sorts of DIY stuff but mostly on traditional Chinese foods.

I think I saw a similar dish on her channel too. Here's her channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoC47do520os_4DBMEFGg4A

There's another dish like that in South Asia that is similar but the filling isn't that elaborate, it's mainly plain rice and chilies. I ate them as a young boy but no longer seen them now. One more food item lost and forgotten.

But it's great to see similarities exist in many cultures.

I did not know. I will check the channel.

I was in Istambul last January and remember seeing those leaves in cans in some of the supermarkets. I was curious about how they would taste. Now that I see your photos I realize I should have ordered them at some of the local food restaurants I had dinner. I will have to try them at home, they look great!

You must try! Stuffed grape leaves is one of my favorite dishes. :) I will even eat for dinner. :)

I love to cook and eat healthy food too. I havent tried Turkish cuisine before. Stuffed grape leave looks delicious and healthy with great ingredients 😋

Wow! @ssygmr, It almost looks like my native food, It really really looks delicious, and this is indeed good for special occasions just like my native's 😋

Oh, that looks so professionally done. You are very handy.
I like to eat the white cabbage version 😋

Hey! @mipiano take it easy so you don't get your tongue bitten 🙄😉

Now it's already too late...🤦😂

😂 😅 🤣, it's nice hearing from you again😁.

I have been really busy, I mean counting the shrimp legs all weekend is not easy task. @galenkp can justify me, I hope? 😉

Hmmm, I can understand, nevertheless you are welcome. 🤗

I am a witness to that, you were given a new title was it sea food biologist?

this looks like something I would absolutely love. It's early orning and I usually skip breakfast but this is making me hungry

It looks and sounds delicious. I have not tried many Turkish dishes, even thought there is a big Turkish community in Venezuela.

This will be a push to check out their food, its good to try something new

It is. Unfortunatelly, we do not have many international cousine options here. We used to have a lot of chinese restaurants, most of which have closed in the last 3 or 4 years as a result of the economic and political crisis.

That's so sad, I understand

Sounds kind of like a sandwich only with out the bread, for a little while I had to use lettuce leafs for my sandwiches, I kind enjoyed the tuna salad in the lettuce leafs.

Ah I love stuffed grape leaves! I would love to try the version that you post here, they look incredible!

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

I've eaten cabbage rolls, but not the ones with the collard greens. They are prepared the same with the same stuffing. The color of your rolls comes from the dark collard greens. And you're correct; you have to be careful not to cook them too soft or they won't roll. Delicious.

Thanks for sharing these. I'd forgotten about them.

Pela'o de Cangrejo

Source

This impossible to translate dish, which literally means crab that has been pealed or skinned, which can't be the case with this dish, as you'll see in the images, is one of the typical or traditional dishes in my hometown (Yaguaraparo) and the whole Paria Peninsula. It is basically rice with blue crabs. It is like a paella, but without all the other seafood.

In this area we have at least two varieties of crabs. We call them river crabs (brown and not very tasty, espeially if they have eaten of a certain fruit that makes their meat sour) and golf crab (blue crab). Even though these crabs are around all year long, they can only be picked or hunted in the winter (rainy season for us). They live in deep holes in the marshy lands (mangroves) along the Paria golf and can be very difficult to reach, let alone catch considering their powerful claws. But in the winter, when the thunders "shake the earth", they run out of their holes like crazy and are easier to catch.

IMG_20201030_153131.jpg

Thus, this is a seasonal food that is very coveted because it is not eaten all year long and because it has an amazing, unforgetable flavor. I have not tasted pela'o de cangrejo in six or more years and yet as I write this and look at the pictures I can smell dish and taste the flavor.

For this amount of crabs you need about 1 Kg. of rice, 10 cups of water.1 Kg. of onions, ½ Kg. of sweet pepper, 1 bulb of garlic, black pepper, a bit of coriander, oil and spice dressing.
Preparation: Wash crabs well, get rid of shell, rewash them with hot water and vinegar, rub limes on chest and smashed legs and claws. Mix crab pieces with ingredients, except rice. When stew is ready, add rice and water, stirr until rice is done.

Catching crabs in my town was a rite of passage of sorts. I have bitter sweet memories of that. But I'll tell the story later

Oh - Thai people do this with the land crabs that are EVERYWHERE in the rainy season - and they can be HUGE. Saw one just yesterday in the driveway that was easily 6 inches across. And yes, they rub them with lime juice too. But they're very much into adding CHILE to spice it up.

Awesome dish. The Thai people tend to serve it over rice, but I think cooking the rice in the juices makes much more sense!

!ENGAGE 25

Oh, boy. It sounds like you have abundant reserves of crabs. In my town people added ají picante (chili peppers) to taste, after the dish was done because not everybody is fan of hot spices. But, yes, it takes the flavor to another level.

This looks tasty!

We have similar crabs to these called blue swimmer crabs and they're seasonal also. There's also limits on size when harvesting them. I've been crabbing a few times, and have bites on my feet to prove it! I don't mind the activity though, it's kind of fun.

So this dish looks pretty good. Like paella but with crabs sounds pretty god as it would showcase the crab flavour rather than it getting mixed into all the other flavours. It looks easy enough to prepare also I'd say. I would like to try Pela'o de Cangrejo and maybe we can go and catch some crabs and make it when I come over your way for a visit?

That would be great. I think we have a variety of those blue swimmer crabs. We call them jaibas.
Crabbing in my hometown was quite an adventure, especially if you did it at the wrong time. Pulling crabs from their holes is a demanding and dangerous activity; you may have to dig so much that half your boddy would be inside the hole, even if you have a long stick at the end of yur arm to help you reach deeper. The first time I tried I got bitten pretty bad. I remember one of my brothers telling me not to move my hand, that the crab would let go if I stayed quiet. Let go? it bit harder ripping the glove I was wearing; it was a female (both claws are small, they bite harder, the males have huge claws you can fool). At the end I had to pull hard and got bleeding fingers with a still biting claw hanging from them.
But,like any other human activity, it is about skills and experience. It can be done pretty efficiently and safely if you know your business well.

As you say, preparing the crabs without mixing other flavors is a great approach. It can be tricky to eat, though. Many people do not like the digging into the shelly parts to get the meat. I think that the taste compensates for all the trouble.

We go crabbing at low tied with a big plastic tub being pulled behind us, tied by a rope to our waist. We use a crab rake to poke into the holes and under ledges and stuff and they grab onto the rake and then they're lifted and deposited into the tub. It's a safe process for hands, but one's feet are always in mortal danger. :)

I don't go much, only once every few years but Faith's uncle and aunt live right on the beech in an off-grid house, totally self-sufficient, and they go all the time. I tend to have a constant supply of pickled crab, scallops and calamari. ;) (All without having to lift a finger.)

Oh, man. You are lucky. That is just fantastic.
The muddy area of the Golf of Paria, where you can sink up to your waist, has little cat fish at the bottom. It's the closest one can het to walking on landmines.

Lol, landmine fish!

Here we just wait for low tide and off we go...I don't mean off the beaches of Adelaide city, more just north of there. When the tide goes out it reveals little channels that snake around the place...Seaweed grows on top and in the channel itself is where the crabs hide. I always wear closed shoes, old runners of something, otherwise I might come back minus a few toes. The furthest I'd sunk is about knee deep in the soft sand but that's rare.

That's like cheating, isn't it? Don't have to lift a finger?

My first ex had an aunt and uncle that lived on Vashon Island. We'd go visit and they'd send us home with 5 lbs (2kg) of clam meat. They had lived in interior (Fairbanks) Alaska for 40 years and he just loved digging clams. What a good deal that was!

Well, when we're there I go fishing and crabbing with Gary and help with the prep, but it's 5 hours away so it's not too often. He always has stuff on the go, and trades it for other foods people make and produce so we tend to get some nice gear now and then. 🙂

The dish looks tasty, looking at the crab it reminds me of when we use it to prepare paper soup. Its been years since I ate crab, seeing it now makes me crave for it

If they are available and afordable in your area, go for it! :)
What are paper soups?

Its a spicy and hot dish that is prepared with assorted meats or catfish![img_20200813_203423_859.jpg

This is an example but tomatoes is included in this one

oooohh! That looks fantastic. We love catfish. We used ot have a lot in the Golf of Paria. Last time I was in my town it was rare to see those fish in the market. Yellow catfish was one of the typical dishes of my town.
Curious name for that soup :)

Why is it called yellow catfish

The skin of the catfish is golden/yellowish. I had an uncle who composed a song to that fish. One of his sons is here on hive and made a video with his sons who are also musicians. You can check the post here: https://peakd.com/hive-174578/@carlosehijos55/el-bagre-amarillo-video-original-con-imagenes-de-internet-de-la-cancion-de-mi-padre

Yellow fish? This is really interesting 😳

Thanks god I'm eating just right now!! I love spicy food 🤤🤤🤤🤤 looks yummy yummy

Hahahaha, I'm craving for a plate now

Wow! I can't stop swallowing my spite, it tastes really delicious, wondering how I knew? I ate from when I was into fishery, I actually took care of catfish. 😋😜

That's nice, that's means you can prepare it

Yeah! I tried it once and it really tasted good 😋

Now we are talking. Crabs. Oh my, I do love crab meat.

Where I grew up there is a species of red crab called Dungeness. It is really sweet and tastes good alone or with anything. The North Pacific is also famous for King Crabs, but I don't think they are as tasty as the Dungeness.

Blue Crabs are legendary on the east coast of the US. I've had them alone and as crab cakes. I have to tell you they are mighty good. Oh, jeeze. I want some crab NOW. :) If I had some it'd be a crab omelette for breakfast for sure!

Thanks for sharing this. I'm just over the moon.

Jajaja. Good.
Those Dungeness look like our Jaibas, but I think yours grow bigger, judging by some images I am looking at on the Internet.
One of the things that always surprised me here was the lack of variety of dishes prepared with crabs. Besides the pela'o (crab with rice), we have the stew, but I never saw anyone prparing salads or cakes, or any other variation or combination. I think that meat allows all kinds of creative dishes.

Wow. Crab salad is wonderful as is crab chowder and the crab cakes are out of this world. Like you I think you could put crab in anything and it would be good.

I just happen to remember that Dungeness Crabs had to be 6 inches (15 cm) across the back to be kept. Most were double that.

Caught them with Crab Pots (a cage trap that sits on the bottom). Put your pots out in the morning and pick them up in the evening. I actually ran a crab line for a while for a friend when he had to go away for a family emergency. He transported the crab live to his restaurant. It was a good gig!

That sounds great. In my town crabbing was never projected as an economic activity. I remember once there was some talk to allow a japanese company to exploit the crabs at big scale, but I don't think we ever had that big of a population of crabs. It was always something minor that individuals procured for their households. I guess it was good for the environment that way

Oh this looks so delicious I love seafood! I can feel the smell through the pic, lol

Yeah, right? It is delicious. For some people who are not so much into sea food it may be an acquired taste

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Whoa! It looks scary at sight but can be very delicious than it looks. I remembered how I used to go visit a friend during weekend and they have it filled up in a big rubber, watching them alive was really fun.

Yes, crabs are impressive creatures. In the university where I studied and eventually worked, which is located by the coats and has a mangrove langoon by the side, we used to get crabs in winter time walking around campus. As a freshman I once tried to "pet" one, put a leash on and all, but crabs are not the best walkers to hang out with :) plus that made all the girls run away from me, so I gave up that idea.

😂 😅 They would have really ran with the back of their feet
touching their head. 😂 🤣 😅 😂

I like gumbo cooked with the same ingredients. One of the spices is Old Bay Seafood Seasoning or Crab Boil. We also add sausage, chicken, shrimp, and crawfish for meats.

Mmmmm That sound yummy. Sounds like our asopado de mariscos, a thick soup with a variety of sea food, a delicacy in this part of the country, but one that isnot sold as often as some years ago.

JPEG_20201031_135434.jpg

My reply is late because I traveled for a wedding on Friday which was held on Saturday. I traveled to play the guitar for the church wedding and I was served the meal above, which is jollof and fried rice with cow meat.

After eating that, I asked for a plate of Amala and ewedu soup since the rice was not enough for my hunger

JPEG_20201031_141258.jpg

Don't mind how it looks, I had started eating it before I thought to snap it.

What pained me that yesterday was I asked for another plate but they didn't give me 😒. They don't know playing the guitar is not easy and we need some fuel to keep up.

  1. I don't have a favorite food because I am the type that eat anything that goes. Anything that comes and taste nice, I eat 😋. I like rice though but it's not my favorite as it depends on my hunger mood and hunger mode. Just to note, I don't eat much anyways. Feel free to invite me to your house anytime 😋😋😋

  2. The second picture above is a national food in my country. I actually don't know what the amala is made of. I just know we buy the flour in the market then cook it up but if I am to guess then it would be cassava. The ewedu soup is made from a leaf that was meshed on fire.

It's ok that you're late, because you're not really late...It's still Sunday here so you're all good. Thanks for coming by and I hope you'll stay around and comment on some of the others too.

I think you're the second person to mention jollof so I assume it's fairly common. I'd like to try it someday and see what it's like.

I don't believe you that you don't eat much...I get the impression you have a big appetite and might clean out my pantry if you came over here...That's all good though, I'm a good host - There'd be plenty of food!

Why I said I don't eat much is, if I eat, I eat in large quantity and when I am filled I may not eat that day again or still dinner.

My mother, and me by extension, would just be aghast that someone would ask for more food and didn't get it.

When we were young my brother and I would wait until everybody had eaten what they wanted and then we'd see if we could finish up. We didn't often get to the end...

Lol.. Over here, we can't do that or the food will finish while waiting. That's because as I am waiting, some would have packed their take away. I expected to be given more because I came to play the guitar without charges asper I know the groom.

I'm just telling you that my mother, or hers or any of her sisters would be in pain if they thought somebody did not get enough to eat. It was a matter of extreme pride with them.

They have the white amala which is made from casava and the dark amala is made from yam.

Looking at the way you devoured that food I don't believe it when you say you don't eat much🤣

Lol... Seriously. Invite me over first then you can judge maybe I do or not.

I will, soon

Playing the guitar must take a lot of energy to ask for seconds, lol. Then you say you don't eat much! Everyone has a national dish. I'd not heard of Amala nor your ewedu soup.

Lol... When he send national, I thought he meant something within my country.

It's been a little chilly here in Canada...Autumn is in full swing. To combat the cool weather, I've been cooking a lot of soups. This one is one of my favorites. I'm not much of a photographer so I don't think it does it much justice but it's a ham soup with barley, split peas and lentils. It's absolutely fantastic and one of my favorite to put in the slow cooker.

image0.jpg

The soup looks so good, there is a soup they cook here in Nigeria with beans but I can't recall the name maybe its because I'm not familiar with it. It's really good for the weather, here we take pepper soup when the weather is cold to put a little heat in there

I love soups. This one looks like a chowder with loads of veggies and meats. A hearty dish. I love it with rice, pasta, potatoes, and corn. As far as the meat, ham, chicken are my favorites for soups.

Soup is one of the great comfort foods and this one looks like it would be hearty and tasty. In winter we get a steady stream of home made soups from my mother in law and so always have something quick to heat up and eat for dinner, or lunch I guess depending on the day of the week. Add in some warm buttered crusty bread and it's a satisfying meal. Soups are underrated I think, but can be very tasty and healthy too.

Thanks for joining in!

I absolutely adore a good soup. My husband doesn't like them. He's crazy! :D Good thing I love him. But I wish he did like them because then I'd make them more often.

How can he not like soup?! Have you tried cold soup? Not common but they are delicious as well!

I question his sanity at times but then again I married him so...... ;) haha

Man. We got a guy doesn't like pizza and one that doesn't like soup? That is pretty bizarre in my world. Just sayin'

Right? 2020 man....it's bringing out the crazy!

And also a guy who doest like sushi..

Point well made!

Hubby doesn't like soup? Only person on the planet who doesn't like soup maybe huh? Lol. Still, that means more for you!

It's weird right? LOL I tell him it's weird as well!

Haha, it's good to reaffirm your husband soup-weirdness. :)

Oh yes, winter time soup, warm and hearty. I have been practicing and learning basic cream style soups, I need to branch out I miss ham and bean soup, but I don't buy canned soup any more so i need to learn that one.

I kind of cheat a bit. I use a premade organic soup mix for the beans and lentils. You can get them at the grocery store. I use a chicken soup broth and add some onions for flavor and the ham.

My mom has a fantastic recipe where she slow cooks the ham and then uses the juice from the ham as a broth.

I'm hungry now.

I'm hungry now.

That seems to be the most common reaction on this whole thread. For the record, I'm hungry too!

I use the canned broths, with it just being two of us it makes little sense to make homemade broths, but I like all the other things to be real food. We just had a quicky cream of potato and broccoli soup for a late lunch.

I was hungry after my second check of the post for new stuff. I think it is going to be a get fat weekend, Halloween candies not handed out, and then all the foods to try.

Whoa that soup looks incredible! I love ham served any way so if it's tossed in a soup I'm all for that. I love lentils as well, I make a really good lentil soup with bacon, onion, garlic and orzo pasta!

It was really tasty. And it was even better the next day since the flavors really blended nicely. Ham is a favorite of mine as well :)

Ohhhhhh. That is comfort food for the soul. That looks sooooo good.

Did I ever tell you that the last Mrs.BT captured me with 'Hocks and Beans'? I mean we'd had a couple of dates but she had some mutual friends for dinner and asked me to come. I just about didn't leave. Seriously.

I just love hearty soup like that. I put chili and sometimes stew in that category (the stew that doesn't thicken up-tastes good but no visual win). I haven't made it since I lived in Washington but I made a clam chowder that was pretty darn tasty. I could use canned clams for that (I do not trust the seafood here).

Now I need soup on top of everything else!

I also love a good hearty stew!

I think haven't try ham soup! But this soup looks really familiar to me I don't know why 🤔

hmmm...I just threw it together but maybe you've had a different variation of it :)

I do have a few variations ;) have you tried onion soups?? Pretty good too

Happy weekend for everybody.
I am drooling with all these delicious dishes. I love eating and even though I can eat almost anything, I have a special weakness for hamburgers and sushi. Since hamburgers are more common, let me tell you about the sushi.

IMG20201031WA0017.jpg

I do not remember exactly how old I was the first time I ate Sushi. It was in Cumaná, Venezuela. My mother had bought a Philadelphia roll at a restaurant in a local mall. It had fried rice around. It was love at first bite. I wondered then how come I had not eaten that before. I tormented my mother for weeks to please take me to that or any other restaurant and get me some more sushi.

IMG20201031WA0024.jpg

In one occasion a maternal uncle visited us and he took us to a fancy restaurant where I ordered a 12-unit plate of sushi. I have many friends who do not like it beause it is raw fish. I just find it irrisistible. I guess the Japanese found the perfect balance to make eating raw fish something good. Maybe it is the vinegar or the sauces. I learned to prepare it and my grandmother and I have done it a couple of times in Brazil. This one had crab, shrimp, avocado, and cream cheese.

IMG20201031WA0028.jpg

My favorite so far, the amazing boat my aunt got me for my 18th birthday.

IMG20201017WA0091.jpg

That boat almost want me to try sushi again, one day I might be able to eat fish again.

Can I ask why you can't eat fish? I'm assuming for an allergy reason. You don't have to say why though, just curious.

I used to think it was too much protein in most fish, almost an allergy, but tuna is one of the highest protein fish. I can eat tuna fish, and a little bit of cod, but when it comes to salmon and halibut, my stomach just will not handle it. Even rainbow trout and other trout hurt. Not sure why I can eat those two but not the others.

That's interesting. People are always speaking about the merits of this over that, health benefits and all, however there's always a flipside right?

We eat a bit of fish and have never noticed any adverse effects although have to other foods. Faith isn't a fain of Chinese food, something in the sauces used, we thing fish or oyster sauce, that has a bad effect on her. We thought it was the MSG but most quality restaurants don't use MSG and the effects still endure. I, on the other hand, have a cast iron stomach. That can change with age though I suppose too.

I eat quite a bit of tuna, mostly tinned, as it's a quick and easy lunch snack with some crackers or something. i have always liked it.

I used to be able to eat Salmon, I enjoyed salmon fishing and nothing like fresh caught and cooked with butter and lemon right away, same with trout, just sit at the lake fish catch clean eat, not any more. I loved Halibut, but can not eat it any more. I keep hoping and trying every now and then, for awhile my system could not eat any animal products except eggs. Took 3 years and then I was able to eat a hot dog with out throwing up, been a slow climb back up the food ladder.

That sounds like a major challenge, the eating thing. I wonder what brought that on?

My niece @smallsteps has food allergies and it's been difficult for @tarazkp and @momone to handle it although they have. He's written about it before. We're hoping it clears up as she gets older and more accustomed to different foods.

The fish>clean>cook>eat thing is the best! Faith's aunt and uncle live right on the beach off the grid and they do that. It's 5 hours from here but we go there sometimes and stay a few days...So good. Nothing like fresh seafood.

Fresh trout and salmon (let's include steelhead) are like dream foods for me. Seriously. I dream about them.

Nothing like a west slope cutthroat that is in the pan before it dries out from the river. Just sayin'

I had a buddy with a restaurant a boat (52 foot-18 meters) and a commercial license. When you were out fishing with him the first one you brought in went on the grill on the fantail. It was fantastic.

Oh, that's too bad. I hope your body gets rid of whatever was causing the intolerance. I know of people with similar issues. There are still so many undiagnosed diseases in our bodies. It's overwhelming.
Stay safe and healthy. Thanks for stopping by

It gets better every year, these type of health issues are mostly guess work on the part of the doctors, so we just stop doing what causes the problem.

I used to eat a lot of sushi a while back but now I only eat it occasionally, but not because I don't like it, more because I try to limit carbohydrates. We have a lot of sushi places here so it's really easy to get and reasonably inexpensive, though not *cheap I'd say.

I'm pretty impressed with that sushi boat thing you have here...Amazing. I think that would have made for a nice celebration meal for your 18th!

I should be more watchful about carbohydrates too. I hope my sport activity helps me get rid of the extra. Yes, the boat was an amazing thing. Like taken from a magazine. The kind of food you don't want to eat not to ruin the presentation. But it looked so yummy we had to ruin it 😗

I think it's ok to have most foods in moderation and appropriately although in modern society carbs and sugar seem to me the most prevalent foods, at least here in Australia anyway. It's good to have an idea of what one is consuming and to find a balance...But when it comes to sushi like that platter you had...Yeah, it has to be ruined! :)

Okay your boat looks sensational, it's been like almost a year that I don't eat sushi I guess, I can't remember very well since all this covid situation

Jaja. Covi made us lose track of time
It was sensational. Thanks. Hope you get to eat sushi again soon.
Have a good week

I'm not the worlds biggest sushi eater, but that looks good!

Some of it isn't really raw, it's cured. There are some things locally which are done that way, cured in lime juice and not cooked. Works pretty good.

Right, curado. Lime and vinegar make the meat tender and get rid of whatever bacteria it may have, which is what people fear when they hear sushi (they hear raw fish) and picture Gollum in that scene from The Lord of the Rings 🤣

Aww sushi, I just figure out how long I havent eaten sushi huh!!! That sushi boat looks amazing 😋

Thanks. It looked and tasted amazing 😉

That is really one damn amazing boat, it looks so good and tasty. OMG!!! I love the set up and how the food is designed. So much love it

Yes. We were all impressed. The people at that restaurant are artists. I do not even know how much that was and did not want to ask. I'm sure it was very expensive.

They really did a great job, it looks expensive actually

Now that's a boatload of food. All different varieties. I'm a fan of cooked food. But it does looks tasty.

Thanks. It was tasty. Some of it was actually cooked. As was pointed out in another comment, it is cured with lime juice and vinegar so the meat does not feel raw, :)
But I understand that for some people that is not the way meat should be eaten. There is a variety of sushi that is fried around and feels crunchy, really good.

Thanks to the sponsors for the weeks topic! And to Galen and lots of others like Tom who make this a success!

So the big plans I had for posting some awesome Italy pictures like the gelato I ate so often didnt pan out but that’s okay! I will still get to share the delicious sauce I made this weekend.

I had planned on making a nice sauce for a while since we have lots of delicious fresh tomatoes crushed and canned in the cabinet! What a perfect way to warm up the kitchen then with the nice aromas of sautéed garlic, onion and some tomato sauce? That’s what we enjoyed, with a few fresh slices of Scali bread from a local Italian bakery. It was a great way to end a fun day.

8A6FF91C903C429EBA236494E4866DA5.jpeg

There's nothing quite like a home made sauce right? I think unless one tries it there's no way to insert the flavour that comes through. Italian food is my favourite food; If I had to eat nothing but Italian food for the rest of my life I'd be happy. That's not to say I don't like other cuisines though...Food is just all-round awesome.

Thanks for joining in this week, a shame there was no gelato images...As you know I've been to Italy a few times and the gelato is simply amazing. Maybe next time though. 🙂

Holy cow. Home made sauce is just the best. I don't do much of it because sauces are a little bit fiddly and I generally am ready to eat, but I sure do appreciate them.

This one looks just terrific. Reminds me that it's time to plant a couple of tomato plants so I can make some tomato sauce in the spring...

Can you use the sauce to add to meat and pasta dishes, or is it just eaten with bread?

Hello dear friend @galenkp good day
Without a doubt, food is something that unites us as people, saving the customs of each of the towns, or the different ways of preparing food. Therein lies the interesting thing about this proposal that you have made, because it will allow us to know other culinary cultures, I appreciate very much that you have decided on this delicious topic

Our weekend dish is grilled beef asado, Argentines eat a lot of meat, we also have the best meat in the world

The family's favorite dish is the hamburgers that my daughter makes in her eating house, we love them for their way of cooking and the chef's secret that makes them very delicious

In my city there are many typical dishes, but this time I am going to choose rice with chicken,

I take this opportunity to wish you a splendid weekend and I hope that our culinary tastes are to your liking

oh my days can I come and live with you. I'd be the happiest person alive.
MEAT.jpg

Lol. Gold. :)

Meat: It's what's for eating!

hello dear friend @scubahead good night
It will be a real pleasure to receive you, here the meat abounds, we will have a great time eating, also, there are many ways to cook it.
We have several ways of cooking the roast, with firewood, on the stake, and with the hide of the cow on. You will love it.
I take this opportunity to wish you a happy start to the week

Hi @jlufer. man that sounds awesome. I remember going to an Argentinian Steak Restaurant when we were in the netherlands and they has a COW MAP on the wall to educate people as to where on the animal what they were ordering was from. mmmmm Meats Back on the Menu Boys!

That last one is rice with chicken? Man that looks so yummy!!!!!!!

Of course Argentina and Asados hahaha I'm going to travel to Argentina just to eat those Asados

Hello dear friend @josehany good day.
Yes, that chicken rice not only looked, it was very delicious, yes, you should come to Argentina, you will love it, we have many exquisite meals that will be to your liking.
I take this opportunity to wish you a splendid weekend, that you enjoy a lot in the company of the people you love

I gonna be there definitely! Maybe not right now but I will!

Thanks for you kinds words my friend enjoy your weekend with your love ones

That would be great, if you come to my province of Corrientes you will be very well received, my wife and my children will love to meet you.
enjoy a lot and a happy rest

We've got a really great Argentinian restaurant here called Sosta - Been there a few times and loved it. Yes, meat, meat and more meat...Not bad though, I can deal with that.

Thanks for joining in, showing us some of your foods and I hope you have a great weekend.

Hello dear friend @galenkp, it is always a pleasure to accompany you in your proposals, it is good that you have an Argentine restaurant there, if it is meat, it will undoubtedly be one of the best options.

Eating a lot of meat is not good, the uric acid it contains does very bad to our body.

Enjoy your weekend a lot

Those are some really tasty dish, I can't just stop looking as the grilled beef. I would really love to have a piece of it, please pass me a plate

hello dear friend @jizzyjoe good day
If they are delicious dishes that we have in this part of the world, especially that which is cooked with meat, here they are very exquisite, without a doubt I will send you a portion.
I take this opportunity to wish you a splendid weekend, rest and enjoy a lot

Thanks a lot and happy weekend to you too

La foto del asado es espectacular, casi casi puedo saborearlo!

Hello dear friend @santigs good afternoon
Yes, that roast looked very tempting, invite you to take a bite.
I really appreciate your comment have a wonderful afternoo

@jlufer my friend. That is some just serious looking food with great photographs.

I have actually had Argentinian beef. It seemed very good to me, but I'm not so sure that I'd put it above the beef we used to raise in Eastern Washington state. Close, certainly :) I think I should come to Argentina and test a strong sample myself :)

I love the look of your daughter's hamburger. Trust me on this, I'm a hamburger specialist. I'd not thought of grilling the bun but I WILL think about it from now on...

That chicken and rice looks too good for words. I make chicken with rice and it NEVER looks like that.

Thanks for a wonderful entry this week. It's beautiful.

Hello dear friend @ bigtom13 good afternoon
Yes, you should try toasting the bread before adding the meat and eating it toasted and hot, you will see that you will love it.

Argentina has two types of meat, one is export, these are animals fattened to firlot, (a mixture of cereals), usually the meat with this fattening, has a certain flavor of pork,

On the other hand, the meat that remains in the country is an animal raised and fattened on natural grass, there is a great difference in tenderness and flavor.

It is good to know that in your area there is very good meat.

I take this opportunity to wish you a splendid weekend

Oh ho! In our part of the world the feedlot cattle are fattened using corn and soy. The real beef is grass fed! But the locals seem to get all that:) I know well the difference!

I hope you have a great weekend as well.

Wow, that's a lot of meat 🍖 🤣
I like everything from you photos, but the first one, asado, would really eat right now, even after dinner that I had some 20 minutes ago

Hello dear friend @mipiano good afternoon
Roast beef is very tempting, it always tastes very delicious.
happy that my images have been to your liking
I take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful weekend

My Fave post so far as I scroll thru them. You had me at...

  • Show us what you're eating this weekend and tell us about it.

  • Show us your favourite food and tell us why you like it.

  • Introduce us to your national food and tell us about it.

I'll start at the bottom and work my way up. I really have no clue what people in America consider the National Food, It could be gumbo, the lowly hamburger, or hot-dog, or pizza, or spaghetti, I really have no clue what is our national Food, I guess like me, a heck of a lot of people in America just like food. That is why we are kind of big.

In the middle favorite food, that is tough, I like food, lots of different foods. lately I have been doing a lot of homemade soups so today's favorite, because that is what I just fixed and ate.

Homemade Tomato Basil Soup

So now lets make a tomato basil Soup

To start we have two tablespoons of avocado oil and on tablespoon of butter, warmed up in the sauce pan. We add about two inches of leek chopped into little bits, (one eighth of a tennis ball sized onion). about four inches of chopped celery, a sprinkle of pepper, a couple shakes of nutmeg, two pinches of garlic salt three pinches of Himalayan pink rock salt, a teaspoon and a half of sugar, and a tablespoon or so of basil leave.

Let that all cook and blend for 5 to 7 minutes on medium to medium high heat, while you chop up two softball sized tomatoes.
As you can see in the next image they are pretty big chunks of tomatoes and still have the skin and the seeds, Of course you want to take out the green stem parts. It takes about 7 minutes for the tomatoes to cook down, I just keep smashing and stabbing at them with a wooden spatula to get them small enough to run the dip-stick blender.

I have to warn you though tomato stuff gets hot, whether you use a blender to puree or a dip-stick style blender be very careful.
After the first chop with the dip-stick blender this is what the mashed tomatoes look like. It is at this point I add about half a cup of heavy whipping cream. And then the dangerous part starts, I set put the dip-stick blender back and and use the high speed puree button. It can make a mess if you are not careful, and make sure it is off before lifting it out of the pan, and always leave the blender head fully submerged.

After the puree action add another tablespoon of basil leaf, and let cook on medium for another two minutes so the basil flavor can leach out.
And there you have it homemade tomato basil soup. It only takes about 20 minutes from start to ladle the soup into a couple of bowls to eat. The below picture shows the time image one was taken and image four 18 and 33 after the hour, so a pretty fast soup.

So for today that was my favorite food. I don't know what my favorite food will be tomorrow.

So the final answer part, why do I like it, well it is getting to be winter here in Alaska, and as far as homemade hot and tasty and good to eat it is a pretty easy and simple soup to make. I have been experimenting with homemade soup for a few months now, and this one does not require a stock liquid, just the tomatoes and the heavy whipping cream, no other liquids. I do like the basic creamy potato soup we have been experimenting with also, I guess it is soup season for us.<br.
Food pictures never come out very good for me and these were from my phone over a hot stove and a steamy at times pot of soup.

Soup is one of the best things ever, especially in cold seasons...Add in some crusty bread thickly buttered and I'm there with bells on. This one sounds bloody tasty!

I'll be honest, Faith and I don't have a lot of time in the day left over for cooking, we do basic things that don't take up too much time usually, although we get a bit more cook-active on the weekends sometimes. He mum is retired though and she cooks all the time so we tend to have a constant supply of home made things rolling in...Including soup. This probably exacerbates the no-cook scenario we have going on...Why cook when we have home made foods delivered every second day! :) Of course, this scenario will change as her mum's situation worsens...But for now...It's on!

Having said that, this one looks easy enough and I'd imagine it is pretty flavoursome too. This will be worth a try for sure.

Just on the national food thing...It's difficult to answer here in Australia too; It's very multicultural and as it was a British colony initially we don't really have a national identity as far as food goes. I don't mind that though, we have so many amazing food-cultures here that I'd not complain at all.

And here I thought the vegemite sandwich was the national food of Australia.

Well, there's that of course; I'm of the opinion one is not Australian unless there's Vegemite in the house. 🤣

I love soups. Fortunately, I decided to purchase a "cooking robot" and now I cook them in summer (fresh cold ones) and winter. I've tried homemade tomato sauce and pumping puree several times but never tried tomato soup. I will definitely follow your instructions to try it out!

I have not heard of cooking robot, is it a robot that helps you cook?

Thermomix was the first one that appeared in the domestic market, quite expensive. Now several supermarket chains as Lidl and Aldi offer reasonably priced ones. I have the one from Lidl. Monsieur Cusine

This is an equipment needed in every kitchen, I love the way it makes cooking looks fun and interesting

Ohhhhh man. It is just now getting cold enough (well cool enough) that I can use the stove all day without the AC (and the electric meter) spinning like crazy so that means it's soup time. I bought 5 pounds of dehydrated veggies that I use exclusively in soup or fried rice. It's sooooo easy and tasty.

That tomato soup really looks good. I mean seriously. My mom used to tell us routinely that real tomato soup is not red like the stuff that comes out of the can... I'll give that recipe a shot.

The nice thing is it does not really take very long to make at all.

Tomato soup is amazing!!!! I even did one of this recipes for my blog a few months ago, so delicious!! My mom is a tomato soup lover she used to eat it with garlic bread ;)

Wow, well presentation. Very detail and clear steps on how to make "Homemade Tomato Basil Soup", Yum-Delicious &Healthy 😋I think I will learn from your recipe to make one 😋 Thank you for sharing

Probably one of the easiest soups to make, no broths needed, no long simmer times, it really is a fast one to make. You just have to be careful of the hot tomato when blending.

I love soup with a passion. I have eaten tomatoe basil soup, because I love creamy soups. But potatoe soup is my favorite with ground beef, seasoned just right.

Soup is so filling if it's hearty, especially during the cold months or just not feeling well. I swear to it that soup makes me feel better.

I like the potato soups also, like you I like having a handful of beef in my potato soup but my doesn't so I add it after, the soup is hot enough to warm the beef. (of course that is cooked beef from left overs).

I need to work on a mushroom soup next.

One of my favorite foods and also a traditional food of my country is the "Hallacas".

They are a delicious typical dish, a corn bun filled with meat, chicken, stew, seasoning, olives, raisins, pork, and many spices. Wrapped in roasted banana leaves. It is a very delicious and loved food here in my country. It is usually made in the Christmas season.

I also love ice cream definitely, but that is a dessert so I will leave it in second place, I like the taste of blackberry, chocolate and Nutella.

IMG_20201031_101012.jpg

A picture of the delicious Venezuelan Hallaca

You say wrapped in banana leaves...Is it then opened up and eaten from within or does one actually eat the banana leaf too? Possibly a stupid question but I'm clueless when it comes to this food. Also, what's the bread thing on the plate? It looks like ham wrapped in a bread roll or something, also with olive? That looks interesting.

Just looking that hallaca 👀 and the salad is wonderful too, pretty the same as Russian salad!! We used to eat this on Xmas 🤤

You're Russian? I didn't pick that.

the photo has a salad and Im telling you it is quite similar to Russian salad

Ok.

It could be, remember that the Latino culture is composed of many imported traditions, and aboriginal traditions. But it is certainly very delicious.

Greetings G-Dog, how are you doing ?
Actually the banana leaf is used to give the shape, and boil the roll, after that you cook it, take the leaf off and eat it. What adorns that dish is the ham bread (also traditional here) and a chicken salad with potato, carrot and green apple. In this post you will see several aspects of the Hallaca.

Ham bread, yeah that looks really good!

You don't need to say it; right from the look I can tell it's delicious and has a nice aroma 😍😋

Gotta say that I had all kinds of plans of what I wanted to cook and share today and honestly, we were BUSY and neither Miss 16 nor I had any desire to go shopping. The fridge was a little bare and so we went for classic and simple: a yummy shitake mushroom omelette with fresh cucumbers on the side.

Omelette1.jpg

Light & fluffy, with sauted onions and a little garlic and not much else. Japanese cucumbers grown by our Chinese vegetable grower in the next laneway across.

Omelette2.jpg

It was perfect with strong black coffee on the side for brunch. WE had intended to grab a bowl of Khao Soi on our way out this afternoon, but we were happily full and decided not. After 3 hours of evening football practice, we opted for a drink and some peanuts. Eating heavy late at night is not something either of us enjoy anymore.

And so after commenting and enjoying sooooo much great food porn in this post, my humble offering attests to the virtue of simple flavours and fresh organic food.

That it took 10 minutes to make? Bonus.

You can cook this omelette for me anytime you like; It looks great! I'm a huge fan of the humble omelette and cheese, mushroom and onion is my go to flavours...So easy and tasty.

Thanks for sharing, and for joining in this week, I appreciate it. Also, I'm wondering how football practice went? Ready to crush the enemy have a friendly game of ball-kicking this week?

I would want to share the native food from the province of Saudi Arabia. It is called Maqash, a combination of boiled meat with its soup, rice, and wheat salted cake.
inbound3439716693571950928.jpg

Fried onions are on the top. Cooking this kind of food needs long patience and effort. I have to bake the salted wheat cake, rice and boiled the meat. Combine all the ingredients and all the spices. (cinnamon powder, black pepper, cumin, bay leaves,)

This is the native food of the old people in the province. Young people are no longer loving it.

To be honest, t
this food is so delicious and healthy food.

Hmm, I can't picture it. What sort of meat do they use?

They are using lamb meat. My phone is laging. I wrote the procedure and add another picture but I cant do it. So I just make it short.

Ah ok, yeah lamb makes sense. It would be good to try all these foods that have been mentioned on this post.

I think Westerners won't like it. Even me, I don't like it. I'm cooking my own recipe, a Filipino food.

Oh ok, well thanks for mentioning it, despite not liking the food yourself. Maybe it's best you stick to Filipino food as you say.

Just sharing their native food. Have a happy Sunday.

Make my own number one on the list 🙄😆😜

Wow that looks good. Like an individual casserole. It's really sad that the young people have moved away from loving it.

I would eat that in a second. I'll bet whitey and blackie like what's left for them, too :)

It's much were you guys having an occasion?

When you're The Luckiest Guy I Know, one of the many perks is your knock-out wife is also a 5-star chef. So I'll share a few of the meals I've enjoyed with her lately that came out of our oven.

Romanesco dip, cream cheese, feta stuffed mini bell peppers with everything but the bagel seasoning:

And check out what she did while we were in Rome during Christmas--a Italian style holiday feast for just she and I.

Pasta penne with real tomato sauce straight from Italy, green olives, fresh strawberries, all the good stuff. Spinach/ricotta stuffed tortellini and look at that vegetable salad! Yum:

Fun fact: Here in the states we say things like "eat" or "let's eat," "I need to feed myself," etc. They don't talk like that in Italy, they say they "feed animals" or "animals eat." It's pretty cool, in Italy they "enjoy a meal together" or "have lunch together."

Cool topic, @Galenkp. Now I gotta see what these other 600+ comments are about. 600?! Man I don't know much about real estate but that's a lot.

Oh! Man your wife is really spoiling you. I'm very sure she hardly lets you eat outside. @dandays you are indeed a lucky man.

Hey wassup @rickardoh? Thanks for noticing.

Now I wish I snapped a picture of breakfast this am--egg and feta fertadas with a homemade salsa. They pictured well, too, promise--you'll have to take my word for it. When given the choice between utensil and camera.. I went for the fork!

😂 😅 🤣, wow! Your wife must be indeed a great cook. Actually I don't like taking pictures of what I eat it looks to me as if I am playing with my food and that's definitely what I don't do, I seat quietly to enjoy my meal. You are indeed a lucky man for sure. Out of 🍽 and 📱 which would I take? 🤔😂😁😉

I like the look of those stuffed bell peppers...And I reckon that table setting looks pretty tasty to. I think dinner at your place would be a taste sensation!

Thanks for joining in this week...Yeah, 750+ comments now...It's been a popular #weekend-engagement topic for sure.

Bonus Post!

Hope the Weekend Engagement Godz do not frown on me for this? LoL

This morning @pooky-jax crock potted up a stew of Cajun Spicy Kielbasa & Taters in a cheese sauce thing-a-ma-bob, cooking up in the crock pot since 7am. 11:30 now so you know it smells Gooood in here.

Early samples are a big positive. Gonna be tasty mee thinks. :-)

The #weekend-engagement committee has convened with the agenda revolving around your bonus post, the validity of it.

The verdict is that it's quite ok to add a second food post and no further action will be taken. :)

That looks like a hearty meal...I like me a good caserole.

I'm a fan of food so I don't really have one favorite food, I've not really had a cheese cake but will try it out one day. It looks so yummy, before I answer my questions I should invite @notacinephile. I made a promise to remind him of this week engagement

Doesn't have to be a favourite food...There's other options.

I will come up with something

Oh you can talk about anything, you have a lot of choices

That's right

Thanks a lot @jizzyjoe!

I was on my way to write a story and possibly miss the discussion altogether!

You are most welcome, its nice of you to join. What story are you writing

A fiction. About a traveler and a forager who wants to rebuild a city. A work in progress you could say.

So when will it be complete, would love to read it

I will post it later today, hopefully. Considering I can finish it today, that is :) I will give you the link once posted.

Thanks, looking forward to it

So. I waited to answer your desert post until I had read and commented on a few food posts (I can tell this is going to be GOOD). I'm a good boy, I cleaned several plates and now am ready for CHEESECAKE.

Damn, bubba. That looks terrific AND you beat @scubahead to the line. Nicely done!

 3 years ago (edited)

@scubahead is the local cheese cake specialist, but I thought, hey, I might as well throw my hat in the ring and see if I could beat him in a cheese cake-off. Ya reckon I nailed it?

There's a lot to be said for getting there first. I think you might have gotten him, or forced him to new heights of cheesecakeness. Either way should be good...

He'll come back strong...It's in his nature.

Yes he is. Hardly ever get the last word with him. And if you do get lucky he sends in one of his minions to deal with you...

mmmmm cheeeeesecaaake

Mid week dates are the best! Even if it's just at lunch, being able to escape the normality of the workday and get out for a bit is a great rejuvinator.

And cheesecake. One can never go wrong with cheesecake.

You are so right Victor. I have never, ever, not even once said "Damn. I'm sorry I ate that cheescake",

Lol...Those words have never been uttered...

It felt a bit decadent having a date during work hours, always does. My wife works a lot so it's not always possible but we do it when our busy schedules permit...Cheese cake often features prominently. :)

Ah what a great topic man. I can definitely get into this one! I will try and dig up some pictures of some of the amazing things that I call my favorite food. I will probably get to it tomorrow so I can check out the 250+ comments right now and see what things others are doing that are going to make me hungry lol

250 comments? I didn't know that because shit is broken, but that's a good number so far I reckon. I'll see what you come up with...No need to make it too complicated, just participate. :)

Have you noticed? The counter is working on PeakD. I'm guessing @jarvie heard our pain :)

I saw that today...Well done to whomever got it done. 🙂 Jarvie?

He's a photographer. Serious photographer. He's got a contract with one of the auto makers to use their 4x4s on his shoots (He goes to some amazing places). Anyway, he's part of the ownership group and I'm sure he's got his fingers in the programming. He started with SteamPeak...

Ah ok, I've seen the name, just didn't get the reference.

Nope wasn't me... probably blocktrades they're the one trying to get hivemind back to working like it was 3 weeks ago

OK then. It's too late to take all that nice stuff I said about you back, so I'll just say thanks. I do appreciate the work.

I just try to point out the things they still have to do. haha

Well, keep pointing man. We need it!
