Jazz as entertainment with a social-political message
Köln hat weit mehr zu bieten, als nur den Dom
Imagine you come to Cologne, strolling through the city and there is someone with a bicycle trailer on which all kinds of instruments are set up, from percussion to clarinet to saxophone. They are all being played by Niklas Mündemann, who is today the head of the Globel Groove Big Band Mutia Kaballa Power Ensemble.
Stell dir vor, du kommst nach Köln, schlenderst durch die Innenstadt und da steht einer mit einem Fahrradanhänger, auf dem von den Percussions, über die Klarinette hin zum Saxofon allerlei Instrumente aufgebaut sind. Die alle werden bedient von Niklas Mündemann, der heute Kopf der Globel Groove Big Band Mutia Kaballa Power Ensemble ist.
Back then, as he describes his performances (that they even worked at all), it went like this:
"I had a loop station and different instruments with me, looped everything and then performed on the street. I could unfold different instruments and it looked quite cool. But it was meant more as a joke."
Damals, so beschreibt er seine Auftritte (dass sie überhaupt funktionierten), ging das so:
„Ich hatte eine Loop-Station und verschiedene Instrumente dabei, hab alles loopmäßig gelayert und dann auf der Straße performt. Da konnte ich verschiedene Instrumente ausklappen und es sah ganz cool aus. Aber es war eben mehr als Witz gedacht.“
However, when Nikals noticed the positive reactions to his performances, he got together with other musicians (not very difficult in Cologne, as the music academy is nearby) and founded Muito Kaballa. It didn't take very long and the first album was ready for release: "Everything is broken".
Als Nikals jedoch bemerkte, welch positive Reaktionen seine Auftritte hervorriefen, tat er sich mit anderen Musikern zusammen (in Köln nicht sonderlich schwierig, da die Musikhochschule vor Ort ist) und gründete Muito Kaballa. Es dauerte nicht sonderlich lang und das erste Album stand zum Kauf bereit: “Everything is broke”.
Now the time began in which they moved more and more away from Afro-beat and searched for ways towards jazz and funk. They began to explore and quickly came to the realization that a person within the ensemble was needed to hold the strands in her hands. This role ultimately fell to Nora Beisel, who from that moment on acted as frontwoman.
Nun begann die Zeit, in der man sich immer mehr vom Afro-Beat löste und die Wege zum Jazz und Funk suchte. Man begann zu experimentieren und kam dabei rasch zu der Erkenntnis, dass es einer Person innerhalb des Ensembles bedarf, die die Stränge in der Hand hält. Diese Rolle fiel letztlich Nora Beisel zu, die ab jenem Moment als Frontfrau agierte.
The statements in their lyrics are often surprisingly clear and political. Inside/Outside comes across with the message: Those who were born within European borders can consider themselves lucky. And frequently lose the feeling that their prosperity is also based on the suffering of others. Adé Bantu, a band member from Lagos, puts it this way: "The deceptive certainty of the people in Europe that they are free of guilt, that they are not directly involved in the daily deaths in the Mediterranean, prevails.
Oft überraschend eindeutig und politisch die Aussagen in ihren Texten. Inside/Outside kommt mit der Botschaft rüber: Wer innerhalb der europäischen Grenzen geboren wurde, darf sich glücklich schätzen. Und verliert oft das Gefühl dafür, dass der eigene Wohlstand auch auf dem Leid anderer basiert. Adé Bantu, ein aus Lagos stammendes Bandmitglied, formuliert es so: “Es überwiegt die trügerische Gewissheit der Menschen in Europa, frei von Schuld zu sein, dass sie an dem alltäglichen Sterben im Mittelmeer ja nicht direkt beteiligt sind.”

Personally, I enjoy it immensely to be on stage with the others and also to see that you reach the audience that way. That you dance together with the people and just have a good time."

Mir macht das persönlich unheimlich Spaß, mit den anderen auf der Bühne zu stehen und auch zu sehen, dass man das Publikum so erreicht. Dass man mit den Leuten gemeinsam tanzt und einfach eine gute Zeit hat.“

Sehr interessant! Das erste Stück erinnert mich etwas an Paul Simon's Obvious Child, mit dem etwas brasilianisch/afrikanischem Touch. Nur dies hier ist mehr Jazz lastig. Schon erstaunlich für eine deutsche Truppe. Manchmal klappt es doch mit der Kulturbereicherung... :)
Paul Simon, Gott sei Dank, endlich vom Duett-Partner »befreit«, suchte und fand Inspiration in allen Bereichen der World Music. In und um Köln sieht die Sache anders aus. Dort treffen (via Hochschule) Musiker aus den verschiedensten Bereichen und ethnischen Herkünften zu und aufeinander. Hier wird nicht adaptiert, sondern verschiedenste Rhythmen werden in Einklang gebracht.
Drei Tage Aufenthalt in Köln und Umgebung und ich hatte genügend Willige an Bord für Jazz-Jam-Sessions von Straßburg bis nach Trier.
