ππ Its a little depressing to see this happening on Steemit , and becoming unenjoyable . I used to love coming on Steemit ! I still do , to at least communicate with some fellow steemian's and perhaps enter some contests ( another way to possibly make money and meet like minded people ! ) but its just not as much fun as it used to be ...
π So unless you have a ton of prominent bots up voting all your posts and comments , or you have already established some whales or big dolphins to upvote you , like a lot of those that are constantly trending and making hundreds of dollars do on every post ! ( I Wish ) along with some guilds or minnow support groups , you can forget about making any money / trending / gaining more followers and meeting new people to follow because your post will die within 30 minutes unless you show yourself some love , and you have a lot of money to boost your own posts all the time because no one else will !!! That is my thought process too. Especially since a lot of people on here are parents. Patterns, time and life changes during the summer. I think that, plus the general downtrend have caused some of the drop off. I do think the voting limitations are also a key part.

Despite the leveling of the field by HF19 minnows like us still have a hard time. I posted as soon as the HF19 was initialed and noticed that those who had an established following got even bigger rewards for their post because the minnow followers still voted and thus gave greater rewards. I admit that I also reduce my voting power to ensure that I can curate as many post that I can.

However thinking long run, we do have a lot of minnows who just onboarded steemit and they will gradually become dolphins and then whales. While i agree with some points i believe it is also a function of time to some degree especially as saturation continues to hit steemit. The amount of original content really does make this a fantastic platform but i totally understand where you are coming from -- But I am very happy to have met you and some of the fine folks from general chat who's content i enjoy!

When I read your post I was surprised to learn that someone with your following and reputation wasn't earning more!
I think the growth of Steemit quickly sends new posts further down the feed.
I have been missing quiet a few of my favorite posters because of it. So unless someone purposely goes to their page, they may get missed.
Personally, I would like Steemit to have a favorites list, or save list to easily find content. For example it took me a while to re-find a recipe posted last month.
Let us hope the growth of Steemit initiates favourable changes so it remains enjoyable for everyone.

@susieisms, it is very simple. When ever I like a blog that I want to revisit later, I just comment on that blog something like "cool. Interesting stuff" or similar.
The idea is once you comment, that blog is in your comments section. You can always check your comments and get back to that favorite blog that you wanted to visit later.
So you convert your comments section into your favorite list section. Simple. I have been doing this since some time. It works for me. π

Oh definitely. We worked our butts off and wrote a thousand posts to reach this reputation. WE still posts the same quality posts we used to post. It is really sad indeed because that tight community is gone. I only switched on my steemvoter again yesterday but I have chosen wayyyyy less people to support. Honestly it is really sad that things are turning out this way. Let us hope that they will realise that this curve is not working and that you actually have to work to earn money...

It's down to hardfork 19 (HF19). It took power away from the power voters (who used to do their full 40 votes a day) and instead gave power to the minnows, while ensuring that voting power drains away after 10 votes.
They assumed that the minnows would replace the power voters - what has happened is that the minnows use their ten votes on themselves (posts and comments), and the power voters can only do ten votes a day instead of 40. So voting has collapsed.
As with all things just a few people were doing all the work to make this platform nice. Restraining them and expecting the masses to make up for it was folly.

Some of the ventings that follow are taken from another conversation I have been having elsewhere. I make posts because I want to share knowledge and interesting subjects with like minded individuals. But it is hard not to get disheartened when your hard worked posts are buried in seconds or minutes under a torrent of shite. The quality of 90% of steemit posts is so dire I wonder how much longer I will be on the platform. Is it worth my time? It's not a question of money. It's always a question of time and right now I feel like I'm wasting it. As I have heard Elon Musk state in many interviews. What is incentivised will happen! Steemit incentivises making posts to make money. It does not incentivise making good, cogent posts to make money. Hence steemit is full of people posting nothing of worth to try and grab at some meagre value. Another problem this platform seems to have is that it is so fucking meta. The basic rule of making tons of cash on steemit? Post your tits or write about steemit and crypto currencies. Or just constantly post random images you found on google and pass it off as 'hey look at this funny meme I made.' The way the wall of posts from people you follow works is also terrible. I havn't been here long but I'm not sure if I want to stay. The 'community' doesn't seem to be something I want to be part of. To many aspects of the worst of online humanity coming to the fore, i.e begging, cheating, plagiarism and outright fraud, ego masturbation, lack of self-awareness and moral fortitude, desperation for money and to climb to the top of the hill by any means, ignorance of the concept of proof reading or cogent content. If I do stay it will probably only be so I can make blogs to then post on other social media sites that don't support easy blogging. That for me is steemits only use at this time. It is easy to blog with. However, steemit for steemit's sake seems like a dead end.

@karenmckersie, you couldn't be more right in your observation. I am a minnow here, just 2 month old, but have sensed what you mentioned here. The window of visibility is getting shorter for every blog, every day with more blogs hitting the screen than ever.
It does not matter if your blog is useful /helpful/plain valuable. You get a very tiny fraction of steemians chancing on your blog and a very tiny fraction of that fraction actually reading the blog and further a tiny fraction of the tiny fraction of the tiny fraction actually upvoting the post. And you end up with negligible payout.
2,75,000+ accounts, only a limited amount of rewards everyday, whales n dolphins upvoting themselves or a few of their favorite authors, a good number of quality blogs out there every minute, each vying for a share of pie, if you are lucky you get traction and upvote, but most often than not, your blog won't fetch anything. All the efforts and hard work n time means nothing. A big naught. This happens with thousands of bloggers here (including me). I have seen some extremely good blogs fail to generate double digit vierweship and a dollar in payout.
So the point is it is no more true that a quality blog will fetch you good comments, upvote n resteems. In fact forget upvote. You may not get any encouraging comments too (and they are free to be disbursed).
I have been through this in my tiny span of 2 months here. I have stopped having any expectation here now, but just post it because it gives me some joy to share my thoughts and stories. I don't even see the payouts for my blogs, instead only look at the "Replies" section to reply to my blog commentors. This has saved me some heartburn and dejection. So I have my energy n focus to write my next blog.
I have started to take it easy here. If it pays good if it does not, it is fine still. It's a good experience and I am learning a lot here and that's my takeaway for all my efforts n time here.

I feel the same way my friend, i thought having more than a thousand followers can easily make your reputation and your votes high, i have been here since may 2017 and at the beginning its was good as my art gets fastly recognized and upvoted, but now i feel like everybodys busy making post, its like posting in a promote page. You give your best shot but barely make a dollar. Not unless you use bots, which i find cheating yourself in a way. Sometimes its just pure luck that it was just the right time.

I agree @karenmckersie. When I came here in June results weren't great for a writer but seen potential especially from people who said after a year of effort things are better than a day job, but after the hardfork it doesn't look good at all.
Looking at steemit, I think the biggest factor people don't realize as it is a blockchain technology is that more people on steemit, less everyone earns. The 4x payout that was implemented quickly became a joke because it suddenly all went down hill from dollars to cents.
I see people with 60+ rep and their upvote is only cents not dollars like before.
I hear people saying thoughts about voting on own post or comments and I had to put it plainly in one reply where I explained that people working hours just to make sense and concerned about the cent that the person voting on their own post does.
If steem could pay people at a normal wage or better, then it is a good thing for society, but I see same as a lot of systems online where it only benefits the few.
I think a lot of people don't realize this simple principle:
1 user = 100% of reward goes to them
4 users = each gets 25%
So, when people invite other people to steemit, they will ultimately find this.
There is more to this and that is only one side of the factor but it is an important consideration and why it only gets worse with more members.

I got on to Steemit a couple of days or so before the Hard Fork. And I saw people voting on my posts so that I got 2 or 3 SBD in no time. But, once the hard fork happened and I started putting up better content, I saw my posts dwindle to 0.02 to 0.43 SBD in a week. Distressing! I'm slogging along, making friends steadily and learning a lot of new stuff from others' posts. Once in a while, somebody with lots of SP walks in and honours me with a decent vote. But, otherwise, my posts make anything from 0.02 to 2 SBD. Earlier I was using Randowhale and Booster for all my posts, but I've stopped. Because it is not always working out in my favour, and I'm losing more than I'm making, besides I want more human interaction. :) Nice coming across your post and you. Good luck! I agree with you Karen. I think it is due to all the new users. There is a new post every 2 or 3 seconds, so it is easy to get lost in the shuffle.
I think a lot of the new users will fall off when they realize that this requires work, and not just a get rich quick platform. I just hope they don't drain the pool before they leave.

Yes, unfortunately is not easy to make it here, unless you've been from the beginning, and already established yourself, but that applies to majority of people. having a lot of bots upvoting is also something that I do not really agree with, because I think we all want our posts to be appreciated by humans, rather than machines/programs, but maybe that's thee only way to get your posts seen and read by other people? a little disappointing...

Do you know of Digg.com, it was taken over by bots and crashed. Mention Kevin Rose to any of the social network techs that work on social networks, Steemit Inc and investors better think twice about bots or they will go the way of Digg.
This article doesn't mentioned the bot wars but my husband loved Digg and was on it since it started and eventually petered out. One reason it failed, the company didn't stay up to date on competition, too many changes to the digg page structure, the company wasn't honest with it's memebers, and I don't think this articles mentions it, but the trending page on Digg was manipulated, there where a group of people colluded, group voting each other up.... it became Rigged.com

This is exactly right! Though we do gain some followers. Mainly it's the follower for follower kind these days that just hope you follow them and upvote them. They don't care about our posts.
I'm slowly losing my inspiration to keep on posting the way I've been doing. No one is reading them anyway. The way Steemit is going now, we'll simply lose more and more quality content, until there is mainly crappy spam left. This will probably mean Steem will eventually just lose value...

Not much has changed, in my opinion. If you win support of influential people with Steem Power, you do well financially. If not, you don't.
For those who are still voting for authors and friends they support, curation rewards are good. The upvote bot trend is interesting but will eventually reach an equilibrium (while also bringing in new investors).

It's a tricky thing because this whole ecosystem is dominated by technical people (okay, "nerds" and "geeks"). So we not only upvote things we like, but we also recognize the value of the tech earlier then some others do (meaning we invest early, mine early, etc) so we have more Steem Power. We're the early adopters. When non-tech geeks also recognize the value here and talk about "normal" stuff, they won't get rewarded as much by their friends.
So what's the solution?
Power Up!
And get your friends who vote for you to do the same. Buying STEEM on the market and putting it towards voting power is how things will change. It's not going to happen just through writing great content.
Be the change you want to see, and all that. Some authors who complain about rewards haven't invested time and resources to understand the technical things going on or to increase their voting power with their own money. They can complain more, but the solution, to me, is to spend that energy building communities with Steem Power who value their content. That means real money flowing into STEEM.

Only my first introduceyourself post did really well, as far as upvotes and views go. But I completely agree with your assessment. I've taken the time to learn about crypto, purchased Litecoin and then used that to buy Steem and then power up. It's helped a lot.

Though i am not as old as you but before HF19 things were good and now account holders are feeling insecure in terms of their voting powers, thats the reason mostly people leaves a comment but they don't upvote and few upvote with their 1% vote.. thats the reason but sometime i try to find solution. What i have done is made a watsapp group and included my friends. I think it's much tougher now to be rewarded, and obviously this is felt more by the people who have been here a while posting detailed and original content. This difficulty is apparent for all though, it does seem really tough to earn, I'm just hoping the 'glory days' will return in future!

The few comments I get are positive and supportive, yet I don't really know how to get more exposure for my posts. So I've been commenting a lot.
But my voting power is not so powerful. I was below 80% yesterday so I didn't see any point in upvoting any posts, even though I wanted to support the poster. I'll still plug away for a while as I see steemit as an opportunity to practice writing and to develop my creativity. Steem away!

Not that I'm glad that you are struggling on here...but I am glad to hear it's not just me! I was starting to doubt my ability to produce quality content. Now I know someone that I got to know through the Community Engagement Challenge and who's been successful with more experience is also having a hard time. That at least gives me encouragement that it's not me or my content. I had a post sit at $0.14 for about three or four days until @dreemit took pity on me and helped promote it and then @canadian-coconut jumped to Dave the day! So there are still wonderful people out there willing to help out those who are struggling. That gave me some hope to keep going, so if you keep going @karenmckersie, I will too!

Thank you for your article! I feel satisfied somehow, because I have the same frustration. I am here since March but I get really involved in June. If a Steemit member like you, older here, lo ts of followers and higher reputation, feels that the platform is not like in the past anymore, how a minnow like me can feel, think and expect from it?
Exactly ! All we all can do is hope someone fixes this some how ! Maybe there will be another hard fork soon that will change things . I sure hope so anyways ! Hang in there , things usually get better on here , once enough people say how they truly feel about it ! Steem on !ππππππ
Thanks for keeping it real Karen. I understand your feeling. Myself and the others are going through it as well. Since the price has sagged the party is over for a little bit. When the price is high everything is good.
It is certainly a tough thing to deal with. I feel it is a lot better than it was on here but I have had a pretty tough time just getting back to 2000 Steem Power even with almost 1700 followers and all that.
I would have expected STEEM to be at over $2000 with the crypto surge but STEEM is lagging for some reason. It might be because people were selling out to jump into other things for awhile. I'm not really sure but even if things sink again we can hopefully become more powerful and have a stable base for a moonshot.
We are still holding it down!

I refuse to change my 100% upvote, and won't.
I have been trying to find a good sweet spot so I can up vote more people while still giving a few cents at least ! I have been using 20% mostly to give more to more people ! But if its really good post I up vote 100% , I don't like having to stop up voting for a couple of days to build my power back up , so I try to help more people a little , which is better then 0 ! πππ
Well this post has done fairly well :) If I make a few dollars I'm happy, but I'm resisting self-voting and using those other services. The Steem is being spread thinner these days, but some people are abusing the system. That needs to be dealt with. Concentrate on the positive and keep on working to make this platform better.
Yes for sure !! I may be starting up a positive type of contest tomorrow where you just need to put a link of your favorite positive post you did or whoever , before your post pays out in my comments , and if a person wants they can also make a post and spread the positivity even more ! Im still figuring out the best way to do it , so if you have any suggestions please let me know !! I am right there with you @karnmckersie - when I first got on here in August of 2016 I was making around $65 per post - now I am lucky to get 65 cents. I don't have as many followers as you - but I am an active member and have been for a year. I don't know what is going on besides Mercury RX. Let's see if things shape up after September 2

I can't say much since I am relatively new here. I initially signed up in December 2016, but didn't get my account confirmed until recently.
I've noticed a lot of junk content coming through the feeds. It seems people are reposting Youtube videos and photos that they didn't create. They've heard about Steemit and the money some pioneers on the platform made and looking to get rich quick.
I know the developer of Steem bases the platform model on Austrian economics. Because of that, I believe the free market will fix the situation. Those flooding the market with junk will find the effort is not worth the reward. They will move on and then the true creators and curators who stick it out will reap greater rewards than before.
I really hope your right ! But we need to get rid of a lot of the bad bots as well before they totally take over steemit and crash it !nthankss for your awesome reply ! Steem On !πππ

I'm on Steemit since recently and I have some experience with social media, blockchain and cryptos. I know Steemit has some a great potential, but I have also some doubts... especially as minnow.
My idea was never to use bots, but recently I gave a try... I have mixed feelings about the whole platform.
... and yes... I love Steemit, and I'm just trying to have fun.

It is impossible to grow here unless you make an initial investment in steempower so you can give back a few cents to your followers/commenters. That is by design of this page and actually a good thing. Everyone who wants a piece of the future cake has to invest first. It quickly discourages everyone wanting some quick money which is a good thing as it improves the quality of the posts.
I love steemit as well and its sad to see this happening ... I don't have a bot myself and I have no bots following me either ! Sometimes I wish I did ! But I do use the boosters when I have steem dollars to do so , otherwise I make only cents on my posts !! We can only hope somehow this gets fixed before everyone leaves as its getting very hard to grow now on this platform ! Best of luck to you !!πππ

There's a simple solution to the problem of self-upvoting.
If more people up voted posts like they used to , we wouldn't need , or even want to up vote our comments occasionally . This is just a new thing since the hard fork ! All this is because of the hard fork 19 ! Heading to bed now , thanks for your reply ! Good night !πππ
I gave you a 100% of my vote, worth all of 6 cents. I don't know what's going on. Not seeing as many of the folks who have been around for a year or so. Those who are still around are just trying to make as many posts as possible and running out of ideas just to milk this all before it crashes.
