When Monika Roscher was born in Nuremberg in 1984 and did not grow up in the circle of a well-known musical family, it was not necessarily to be expected what kind of artistic career she would one day pursue. But it was already during her studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich that it became clear what a great talent had grown up here.
1984 in Nürnberg geboren und nicht im Kreis einer bekannten Musikerfamilie aufgewachsen, war nicht zwingend zu erwarten, welchen künstlerischen Werdegang Monika Roscher einmal einschlagen würde. Doch bereits während ihres Studiums an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater in München kristallisierte sich heraus, welches großartige Talent hier heranwächst.
Today, Monika Roscher not only delights the jazz community worldwide with her performances and vinyl releases, but also as a composer for theatre, film, and drama. Examples include engagements for 'Die Räuber' in Munich, 'Luther' for the Klosterfestspiele Langenzenn, 'Woyzeck' in Basel as well as 'Elektra' and 'Das große Heft'.
Heute begeistert Monika Roscher nicht nur die Jazz-Gemeinde weltweit mit ihren Auftritten und Vinyl-Veröffentlichungen, sondern auch als Komponistin für das Theater, den Film und das Schauspiel. Beispiele hierfür die Engagements in München für ‘Die Räuber’, das Theaterstück ‘Luther’ zu den Klosterfestspielen Langenzenn, ‘Woyzeck’ in Basel, sowie ‘Elektra’ und ‘Das große Heft’.
But there is no doubt that Monika Roscher owes her international popularity to the fact that her big band brings a kind of jazz to the stage that defies categorization. The music has something of southern bombast, orchestral fullness, a touch of funk, modern, very tender and then again heavy beat elements.
Doch besteht überhaupt kein Zweifel daran, dass Monika Roscher ihre Popularität, über die Landesgrenzen hinweg, dem Umstand zu verdanken hat, mit ihrer Bigband einen Jazz auf die Bühne zu bringen, für den es eigentlich keine geeignete Sparte gibt, um ihn einzuordnen. Die Musik hat was vom Südstaaten-Bombast, orchestraler Fülle, den Hauch von Funk, modernen, sehr zarten und dann wieder heavy-beat Elementen.
It all started in 2012 with the album 'Failure in Wonderland', which was an immediate winner of the newcomer of the year award. But in 2016 it was topped by 'Of Monsters and Birds'. There was hardly a jazz festival that Monika Roscher and her big band were not invited to perform at. Jazzfest-Berlin, Jazz-Baltica, Burghausen or the Stroke Art Fair in Munich. After a tour of Europe, their next step was a knock on the door of the jazz world in the USA.
All das begann 2012 mit dem Album “Failure in Wonderland”, welches auf Anhieb zum Newcomer des Jahres gekürt wurde. Dies wurde jedoch noch weit übertroffen 2016 von “Of Monsters and Birds”. Es gab nahezu kein Jazz-Festival, auf das Monika Roscher mit ihrer Bigband nicht eingeladen wurden. Jazzfest-Berlin, Jazz-Baltica, Burghausen oder Stroke Art Fair in München. Nach der Reise durch Europa klopfte man an die große Tür des Jazz in den USA.
And now the collective around Monika Roscher is back with the release of its third album. Entitled "Witchy Activities And The Maple Death", the album once again proves how exciting the big band sound can be. One critic summed up his impressions with the following sentence: "This is what a band sounds like that loves adventure, that, driven by an insatiable hunger for musical symbiosis, surprises and reinvents itself again and again".
Jetzt kommt das Kollektiv um Monika Roscher mit ihrem dritten Album auf den Markt. Unter dem Titel “Witchy Activities And The Maple Death” bleiben sie auch dieses Mal keine Sekunde den Beweis schuldig, wie aufregend der Bigband-Sond klingen kann. Ein Kritiker gab seine Eindrücke mit dem folgenden Satz wieder: “So klingt eine Band, die das Abenteuer liebt, die sich angetrieben von einem unstillbaren Hunger nach musikalischer Symbiotik immer wieder selbst überrascht und aufs Neue erfindet.”
