When jazz unites with flamenco.

Today on the Jazz Matinee stage is a man who, like no other Spanish musician (not to mention Paco de Lucia), manages to combine jazz elements with flamenco, world and classical rhythms.
David Peña DorantesBorn in 1969 in the province of Seville, David Peña Dorantes was born into the music of this region. No wonder, having a father Pedro Peña and a grandmother Maria La Perrata.
Heute betritt ein Mann die Bühne der Jazz-Matinee, der es wie kaum ein anderer spanischer Musiker (Paco de Lucia nicht zu vergessen), die Elemente des Jazz, mit dem Rhythmus des Flamencos, Weltmusik und der Klassik zu verbinden.
David Peña Dorantes. Die Rede ist von dem 1969 in der Provinz Sevilla geborene David Peña Dorantes, dem die Musik dieser Region wohl bereits in die Wiege gelegt wurde. Kein Wunder, wenn der Vater Pedro Peña und die Großmutter Maria La Perrata sind.
David Peña Dorantes explains why flamenco always plays such an important role in his compositions: “It is our way of communicating, almost on a par with the common language of spoken words. The medium through which we communicate is more than music - and our gatherings are much more than a party; it's more like a community”.
Probably no further investigation is needed with this statement.
Warum der Flamenco in seinen Kompositionen immerwährend eine so große Rolle spielt, erklärt David Peña Dorantes mit diesen Worten: «Er ist unsere Art der Kommunikation, fast gleichrangig mit der üblichen Sprache der gesprochenen Worte. Das Medium, durch das wir uns mitteilen, ist mehr als nur Musik – und unsere Zusammenkünfte sind viel mehr als nur eine Feier; es ist eher eine Art Kommunion.»
Diese Aussage erübrigt dann wohl weitere Nachfragen.
The basis for Dorantes' compositions is usually classical music. On top of this foundation, he then adds a wide range of elements from other styles of music. In keeping with his own identity, the elegance and sensitivity of flamenco play an unmistakable role. The role of jazz, which is incorporated into this musical fabric, is to broaden the spectrum of free interpretation.
Die Grundlage für die Kompositionen von Dorantes ist meist die Klassik. Auf dieses Fundament fügt er anschließend die verschiedensten Elemente aus anderen Stilrichtungen zu. Seiner eigenen Identität gerecht werdend, spielen dabei die Eleganz und die Feinfühligkeit des Flamencos eine unüberhörbare Rolle. Dem Jazz, der in dieses musikalische Gewebe eingearbeitet wird, kommt die Aufgabe zu, das Spektrum der freien Interpretation zu erweitern.
Dorantes finds the following words for this: “The possibility of simple communication has brought places closer together that are spatially far apart, has made this music open to other forms and aesthetics, and has thus achieved a musical result of extraordinary quality that is comparable to jazz and classical music, but has retained the warmth of purity, expression and intuition, thus parrying the judgement of academism. One now achieves quite an interesting balance between the two aspects, which I hope will not be lost and will continue to develop because it accommodates otherness.”
Dorantes findet dafür folgende Worte: «Die Möglichkeit der einfachen Kommunikation hat Orte einander nähergebracht, die räumlich weit voneinander entfernt sind, hat diese Musik offen für andere Formen und Ästhetiken gemacht und so ein musikalisches Ergebnis von außerordentlicher Qualität erreicht, das mit dem Jazz und der Klassik vergleichbar ist, aber die Wärme der Reinheit, des Ausdrucks und der Intuition bewahrt hat und damit dem Urteil des Akademismus pariert. Man erreicht inzwischen ein recht interessantes Gleichgewicht zwischen den beiden Aspekten, das hoffentlich nicht verloren gehen und sich weiter ausbilden wird, weil es der Andersartigkeit stattgibt.»
David Peña Dorantes made his absolute musical breakthrough in 2019 with La Roda del Viento, in which he musically is hiking the routes of the explorers from Magellan to Elcano. Adventures from 1519 in the guise of 21st century.
Then, with El Tiempo Por Testigo (2017) and La Roda del Viento (2020), the influences of jazz became increasingly apparent. Now, with Identidad, he has released a live album in which all the styles that have shaped him have found a place.
Den absoluten musikalischen Durchbruch schaffte David Peña Dorantes 2019 mit La Roda del Viento, in der er sich mit den Routen der Entdecker von Magellan bis Elcano beschäftigte. Abenteuer aus dem Jahr 1519 im Kleid der Musik des 21. Jahrhunderts.
Mit El Tiempo Por Testigo (2017) und La Roda del Viento (2020) wurden dann die Einflüsse des Jazz immer stärker ausgebildet. Nun hat er mit Identidad ein Live-Album auf den Markt gebracht, auf dem allen prägenden Stilrichtungen ein Platz eingeräumt wurde.
