Before I invite the various formations on to the matinee stage, a quick word about ska-jazz. What is the meaning of this expression? Where did it originate and how did jazz musicians become aware of it? And what are the characteristics of this style? Ska originated in the 50s and is considered a fusion of jazz and Jamaican rhythms. But ska really took off in the '90s, when jazz and reggae were fused in London clubs.
Bevor ich gleich die verschiedensten Formationen auf die Matinee-Bühne bitte, noch eine kurze Anmerkung zum Ska-Jazz. Was bedeutet diese Bezeichnung? Wo entstand sie und wie bekam sie die Aufmerksamkeit der Jazzer? Und was ist das Charakteristische an dieser Stilrichtung? Der Ska entstand in den 50er Jahren und gilt als Verschmelzung von Jazz und jamaikanischen Rhythmen. Doch so wirklich etablieren konnte sich der Ska erst in den 90ern, als in den Londoner Clubs der Jazz mit Reggae verschmolzen wurde.
Following tradition, ska jazz is mainly defined by a lot of brass and just as much percussion. But all this only really works when improvisation meets inspiration shaped by tradition.
The North East Ska Jazz Orchestra is a very typical example of how this sound has taken root in Europe. The orchestra was founded in Italy, not Jamaica, and has been entertaining the entire Mediterranean region ever since.

Ein ganz typisches Beispiel dafür, inwieweit dieser Sound sich auch in Europa verfestigt hat, ist das North East Ska Jazz Orchestra, welches sich nicht auf Jamaika, sondern in Italien formiert hat und seither das komplette mediterrane Gebiet mit ihrer Musik bei Laune hält.

Back in France, Nancy Skankin'Jazz Orchestra is writing another chapter in the ska-jazz biography. Although based on Jamaican rhythms, their music is strongly influenced by the big band sound of the swing era. In addition to their own compositions, the band also likes to draw on the material of established jazz greats - as many as there are: Herbie Hancock, the Skatalites, Stan Kenton or the Toots.

Don't let the name of the formation fool you. With Jazz Jamaica we are far from the Caribbean. We are back in what is known as rainy Britain. But we are still enjoying the music of the colony. The band was formed in 1991 by Gary Crosby. They called their style of music short and sweet: Skazz. One of their aims was to get more of the younger generation of Caribbean immigrants interested in this kind of jazz music. They seem to have succeeded.

Wir befinden uns im, als regnerisch bezeichneten, Großbritannien wieder, genießen jedoch die Musik der Noch-Kolonie. Bereits 1991 wurde die Band von Gary Crosby gegründet. Sie nannten ihren musikalischen Stil kurz und bündig: Skazz. Ziel war es auch, mehr aus der jungen Generation der karibischen Einwanderer für diese Art des Jazz zu begeistern. Aha, Ska Jazz also. Da habe ich doch tatsächlich noch was gelernt.
Ich bin ein großer Ska Fan und spätestens nach Madness sind Blasinstrumente nicht nur etabliert, sondern ein wichtiger Bestandteil in der Musik. Selbs Künstler wie Terry Hall und The Specials haben auf ihren Live Sessions immer ein mehr oder wenig großes Blasorchester zur Unterstützung gehabt. Auch war es üblich, dass Musik anderer Künstler und anderer Genres, in die "Musiksprache" Ska übersetzt wurde.
Deshalb war es für mich immer einfach Ska und nun habe ich gelernt, dass es eigentlich Ska Jazz war ;)
Wir leben halt in einer verrückten Welt, wo alles, immer in eine Schublade gesteckt werden muss, damit man es sortieren, katalogisieren und im schlimmsten Fall kontrollieren kann. Rock - Pop, Arm - Reich, Links - Rechts und nun auch Ska - Ska Jazz :-)))
Was die Schubladen betrifft, kann ich dem nur zustimmen. Mich verwundert dabei das Phänomen, dass die Dinger anscheinend nie überquellen? Die schlimmsten Schubladenfüller sind übrigens die, die mit diesem Wahn glauben, Ordnung geschafft zu haben.
Was den Ska betrifft, verhält sich die Sache ganz einfach: gewährt man dem Musiker freie Interpretation des Themas und ist sich dabei gewiss, dass er immer wieder musikalisch ins Team zurückkehrt, dann sind wir beim Ska-Jazz angelangt. Bevor ich es vergesse - 6. Schublade von oben und dann die ganz links hinten. Also ganz leicht zu finden. :-)
