If someone told me that growing up in Sudan, recognising one's parents' musical preferences, drawing one's attitude to life from Ethiopian roots, studying in Texas and then becoming the musical leader of a jazz group in Boston is normal today. — I would immediately agree with this theory.

Wenn mir jemand erzählen würde, dass es heutzutage ohnehin ganz normal ist, im Sudan aufzuwachsen, via musikalischer Vorlieben der Eltern zu erkennen, das Lebensgefühl aus äthiopische Wurzeln zu ziehen, in Texas studiert, um dann in Boston musikalisches Führungsmitglied einer Jazz-Formation zu werden. - Ich würde der These augenblicklich zustimmen.

Because only music knows how to weave the threads of connectedness, across all the borders of our planet, together in a peaceful mission. A wonderful example of this is Danny Mekonnen, who grew up with the traditional music of Ethiopia, was inspired by the jazz of the early American scene (Coltrane and Davis) in high school, and then matured into a music student at the University of Texas. From there he moved to Harvard University, where saxophonist Mekonnen met singer Bruck Tesfaye.

Denn nur die Musik versteht es, die Drähte der Verbundenheit, über alle Grenzen unseres Planeten hinweg, miteinander in friedlicher Mission zu verstricken. Ein wunderbares Beispiel dafür ist Danny Mekonnen, mit der traditionellen Musik Äthiopiens aufgewachsen, ab dem Gymnasium begeistert vom Jazz der amerikanischen Szene der früheren Jahre (Coltrane und Davis) und anschließend zum Musikstudierenden an der Texas University heranreifte. Von dort zog es ihn an die Harvard Universität, wo der Saxofonist Mekonnen den Sänger Bruck Tesfaye kennenlernte.

With a few members of a disbanded circus band, who used plenty of brass instruments in their compositions and integrated the sound of Klezmer, they started the series of CDs called "Éthiopiques". In order to do this, they took members of the Ethiopian community in Massachusetts into the studio with them. — All of them were amateur musicians and had little or no contact with jazz music before. This was the birth of the Debo Band.

Mit mehreren Mitgliedern einer sich aufgelösten Zirkusband, die für ihre Kompositionen viele Blechinstrumente einbauten und den Klezmer-Sound integriert hatten, starteten sie mit der CD-Serie »Éthiopiques«. Dazu nahmen sie Mitglieder der äthiopischen Gemeinschaft in Massachusetts mit ins Studio. - Allesamt Laien-Musiker und zuvor kaum mit dem Jazz in Berührung gekommen. Der Geburt der Debo Band.

In translation, Debo means nothing more than work in the community. A truly fitting name for the newly formed group. To give their sound more depth, they added guitar and bass to the saxophone, horns, violin, accordion, and drums. Now they were ready to make the leap from the backyards of Boston to the music stages of the surrounding area.

Debo bedeutet in der Übersetzung nichts anderes als Gemeinschaftsarbeit. Ein wahrhaft passender Name für die neu gefundene Formation. Um dem Sound mehr Fülle zu verleihen, nahm man, neben dem Saxofon, den Blechbläsern, der Violine, dem Akkordion und dem Schlagzeug, noch die Gitarre und den Bass in die Gemeinschaft auf. Nun gelang auch endlich der Sprung aus den Bostoner Hinterhöfen auf die Musikbühnen der Umgebung.

Thanks to curator Frances Falceto, the Debo Band was able to perform their compositions live in Zanzibar, Tanzania and, of course, Ethiopia, thanks to her special interest in music from the Horn of Africa. The first solo album (2012), which bears the band's name and is dominated by Ethiopian ethno-jazz, was followed in 2016 by Ere Gobez (Call of the Lion Hearts). This album also pays tribute to the countries of origin of the other band members. An absolute must-buy to me!
Meanwhile, the band has gained 10 years of experience. They are currently working on their third album.

Der Kuratorin Frances Falceto, die sich vornehmlich der Musik rund um das Horn von Afrika widmete, ist es zu verdanken, dass die Debo Band die Möglichkeit erhielt, ihre Kompositionen in Sansibar, Tansania und natürlich Äthiopien live zu präsentieren. Nach dem ersten Solo-Album (2012), welches den Namen der Band trägt und vom Ethno-Jazz Äthiopiens bestimmt ist, folgte 2016 das Album Ere Gobez (Ruf der Löwenherzen), auf dem auch die Herkunftsländer der restlichen Bandmitglieder musikalisch gewürdigt wurden. Für mich, ein absoluter Kauftipp!
Die Band hat inzwischen 10 Jahre Erfahrung gesammelt und arbeitet zurzeit am 3. Album.
