Slovakia + Jazz = Peter Lipa
Lipa, who studied construction engineering and later became a journalist, was born in [Prešov] (https://slovakia.travel/en/presov) in 1943. During his school years, when he learned to play the guitar, trumpet, trombone and violin, Lipa was deeply involved in various styles of music. It was during his studies, however, that his passion for blues and jazz began to crystallise.
Der studierte Bautechniker und spätere Journalist wurde 1943 in Prešov geboren. Bereits während der Schulzeit, in der er neben der Geige auch Gitarre, Trompete und Posaune erlernte, beschäftigte sich Lipa intensiv mit den verschiedenen Stilrichtungen der Musik. In der Zeit des Studiums kristallisierte sich dann jedoch die Leidenschaft zum Blues und dem Jazz heraus.
From 1960 onwards, he played in several different formations. These included the Blues Five, the Gustav Offerman Orchestra, the Revival Jazz Band, the T + R Band and the Lipa-Andršt Blues Band. Although honoured with the Blues Five as best newcomer of the year in 1968, Peter Lipa was prevented from producing his own records until he was 40, as he seemed politically unloyal to the communist rulers and jazz seemed irrelevant to the system.
Ab 1960 spielte er in den verschiedensten Formationen. Unter anderem bei den Blues Five, Gustav Offerman Orchestra, Revival Jazz Band, T + R Band und Lipa-Andršt Blues Band. Obwohl 1968 mit den Blues Five als beste Newcomer des Jahres geehrt, blieb es Peter Lipa bis zu seinem 40. Lebensjahr verwehrt, eigene Platten zu produzieren, da er den kommunistischen Machthabern nicht politisch linientreu erschien und der Jazz ohnehin nicht systemrelevant erschien.
What is so remarkable about Peter Lipa when it comes to composing? It is the lyrics that he adds to his music. There may be musical approaches to Ray Charles, Al Jarreau or Bobby McFerrin, but the lyrics remain a product of the Slovak heart. Before him, there was no jazz performer who used the Slovak language. If you ask the European jazz scene, Peter Lipa belongs to the crème de la crème.
Was ist an Peter Lipas Kompositionen so bemerkenswert? Es ist die Lyrik, die er seiner Musik zur Seite stellt. Da können musikalische Annäherungen an Ray Charles, Al Jarreau oder Bobby McFerrin unbestritten sein, doch bleibt die Lyrik ein Produkt aus slowakischem Herzen. Vor Ihm gab es überhaupt kein Jazz-Interpret, der sich der slowakischen Sprache bediente. Befragt man die europäische Jazz-Szene, gehört Peter Lipa in die Rangliste der Crème de la crème.
In 1976, with Miloš Paška as his partner, he began an attempt to establish the Bratislava Jazz Days as an event in his home country. The Slovak Jazz Community was founded to support this initiative. Peter Lipa is still a member of this community. One of his closest friends is Bobby McFerrin, who asked Peter Lipa to join him on stage during one of his concert tours.
Mit Miloš Paška als Partner nahm er 1976 den Versuch in Angriff, die Bratislava Jazz Days als Event in seiner Heimat zu etablieren. Dies unterstützend wurde die Slowakische Jazzgemeinschaft gegründet, der Peter Lipa bis heute angehört. Besonders innig ist die Freundschaft zu Bobby McFerrin, der bei seiner Konzert-Tour Lipa mit auf die Bühne bat.
Although he is now in his 80s, Peter Lipa is still active in the jazz scene. He still works with the Višegrad Blues Band, EU4 and Traditional Club, in addition to his own band, The Peter Lipa Band. So, if one day I get the chance to see Peter Lipa live - certainly, take advantage of it!
Obwohl inzwischen 80-jährig, ist Peter Lipa noch immer aktiv in der Jazz-Szene. Neben seiner eigenen, der Peter Lipa Band, arbeitet er noch immer mit der Višegrad Blues Band, EU4 und Traditional Club. Wenn also eines Tages ich die Möglichkeit auftun sollte, Peter Lipa live zu erleben – unbedingt wahrnehmen!
