People like to talk about "Danish dynamite", which is more likely to be found in football or handball. But from now on, it's all about music – and only music of the finest kind. Arrangements packed with explosive surprises and promising. From 2012 to the present day, it's been an astonishing journey.
Man spricht allzu gerne von dem »Dänischen Dynamit«, das dann jedoch eher im Fußball oder Handball zu vermuten ist. Hier geht es ab sofort um Musik – und nur um Musik der feinsten Sorte. Arrangements mit explosiven Überraschungen und jeder Menge Versprechungen. Denn von 2012 bis heute ist es ein Weg voller Überraschungen.
It was a while ago that Hurricane Sandy devastated the east coast of the United States, civil war broke out in Syria and a musical group was formed in Denmark that included in its name the man whose work had been formative for them all. It was in 2012 that The KutiMangoes performed under this name for the first time. Their inspiration was, of course, none other than Fela Kuti.
Es ist bereits eine Weile her, als der Hurrikan Sandy die amerikanische Ostküste verwüstete, in Syrien der Bürgerkrieg begann und in Dänemark sich eine musikalische Formation zusammentat, die bei ihrer Namensgebung den Mann einbezogen, dessen Schaffen für alle prägend war. Es war im Jahr 2012, als The KutiMangoes erstmals unter jenem Namen auftraten. Das erwähnte Vorbild war natürlich kein Geringerer als Fela Kuti.
The music they brought to the stage was meant to cross borders in the world of jazz. Instrumental grooves with powerful horns and the rhythm of percussion. Not a Kuti cover band, as was often hastily assumed, but completely independent compositions with an intoxicating sound determined the programme.
Die Musik, die sie mit auf die Bühne brachten, sollte grenzüberschreitend in der Welt des Jazz sein. Instrumentale Grooves mit kraftvollen Bläsern und dem Rhythmus der Perkussion. Keine, wie man oft vorschnell annahm, Kuti-Cover-Band, sondern vollkommen eigenständige Kompositionen mit einem mitreißenden Sound, bestimmten das Programm.
In 2022 they decided to change their name to Sunbörn. Not necessarily to free themselves from prejudices and misinterpretations, but rather to shift the musical "pace" more towards their Scandinavian homeland. Since Mangoes can be loosely translated as "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", the listener could now experience how far this apple had fallen from the tree.
2022 entschloss man sich dann zu der Namensänderung - hin zu: Sunbörn. Nicht unbedingt, um sich von Vorurteilen und falschen Interpretierungen zu befreien, sondern vielmehr, die musikalische »Gangart« mehr auf ihre skandinavische Heimat zu verlegen. Da Mangoes frei übersetzt so viel wie der Apfel fällt nicht weit vom Stamm heißt, konnte der Zuhörer nun miterleben, wie dieser Apfel sich doch sehr weit von diesem Stamm entfernt hatte.
In this context, it seems worth mentioning that the band members are by no means all originally from Denmark or Scandinavia. We meet a very broad mixture here, such as: Caio Marcio (Brazil), guest bassist Ida Nielsen (Denmark), BIGYUKI (Japan/USA), DJ Opolopo (Sweden), Clap! Clap! (Italy), Moderator (Gabon), Gustav Rasmussen (Denmark). And all with the Danish passport.
In diesem Zusammenhang scheint mir erwähnenswert, dass die Bandmitglieder mitnichten alles aus Dänemark, bzw. Skandinavien stammen. Wir treffen hier auf eine ganz breite Mischung, als da wären: Caio Marcio (Brasilien), Gast-Bassistin Ida Nielsen (Dänemark), BIGYUKI (Japan/USA), DJ Opolopo (Schweden), Clap! Clap! (Italien), Moderator (Gabun), Gustav Rasmussen (Dänemark). Und alle mit dem dänischen Pass.
