It’s time to take a side trip to Belgium
Perhaps some lovers of good old rock music are familiar with the name dEUS? It is a Belgian band whose frontman is Tom Barman. However, this Tom Barman was already very experimental in the past and recorded several tracks for the record label [Blue Note] (https://www.bluenote.com/).
Möglicherweise ist dem einen oder anderen Liebhaber von guter, alter Rockmusik der Name dEUS ein Begriff? Es handelt sich um eine belgische Formation, deren Frontman Tom Barman ist. Jener Tom Barman war allerdings bereits in früherer Zeit musikalisch äußerst experimentierfreudig und spielte für das Plattenlable Blue Note mehrere Titel ein.
He continued to perform this balancing act until it no longer occurred to him to set up a jazz band of his own. It was with this plan that Barman ran into the open arms of the tenor saxophonist Robin Verheyen. Together, they formed TaxiWars. A quartet that not only breathes new life into the bebop of the 40's, which had almost fallen out of fashion. It also promises to be an experience on stage thanks to its fabulous, modern songwriting.
Diesen Spagat betrieb er so lange, bis er nicht auf die Idee kam, eine eigene Jazz-Formation zu gründen. Mit diesem Vorhaben rannte Barman bei dem Tenorsaxofonisten Robin Verheyen in offene Arme. Zusammen gründeten die beiden TaxiWars. Ein Quartett, welches nicht nur dem fast schon aus der Mode gekommenen Bebop der 40-er Jahre wieder neuen Aufschwung verleiht, sondern auch, durch den fabelhaften, modernen Stil des Songwriting, ein Erlebnis auf der Bühne verspricht.
In 2015, they released their first album with the band name "TaxiWars" as its title. Just one year later (2016) they followed up with "Fever". Subsequently, the guys slowed down a bit and took a little more time for the album "Artificial Horizon", which was released in 2019. What's striking about TaxiWars' productions is the consistency (unlike most tracks in the jazz genre) of packing lyrics and music into a package of no more than five minutes. But they are worth listening to!
2015 erschien ihr erstes Album, welches als Titel den Namen der Band trug »TaxiWars«. Bereits ein Jahr später (2016) legten sie musikalisch mit »Fever« nach. Danach ließen die Jungs es etwas langsamer angehen und nahmen sich für das Album »Artificial Horizon« ein wenig mehr Zeit und brachten es 2019 auf den Markt. Was bei den Produktionen von TaxiWars auffällt, ist die Konsequenz (ganz im Gegensatz zu den meisten Titeln aus dem Bereich Jazz), Text und Musik in ein Paket von maximal fünf Minuten zu packen. Aber die können sich hören lassen!
From slow, even contemplative, to a rousing groove and always with an emphasis on rhythm - that's how TaxiWars' repertoire can be summed up. There are music lovers who claim that this music is not only suitable for the jazz stage, but also for any party. But to each his own opinion. In any case, I look forward to welcoming them to the Jazz Matinee.
Von langsam, gar nachdenklich, hin zu einem mitreißenden Groove und stets Rhythmus betont – so ungefähr lässt sich das Repertoire von TaxiWars zusammenfassen. Es soll Musikliebhaber geben, die behaupten, dass diese Musik nicht ausschließlich für die Jazz-Bühne, sondern auch auf jede Party passt. Jedem, wie es ihm gefällt. Ich bin jedenfalls froh, sie bei der Jazz-Matinee begrüßen zu können.
In addition to Tom Barman and Robin Verheyen, the quartet is completed by Antoine Pierre and Nicolas Thys. I can only hope that it won't be an eternity before the follow-up to 'Artificial Horizon' is available for purchase. The biggest problem seems to be that all the members are still touring with other formations at the same time.
Neben Tom Barman und Robin Verheyen komplettieren Antoine Pierre und Nicolas Thys das Quartett. Ich kann nur hoffen, dass es nicht erneut eine kleine Ewigkeit dauert, bis der Nachfolger von »Artificial Horizon« zum Kauf bereitsteht. Das größte Problem dabei scheint, dass alle Bandmitglieder noch gleichzeitig mit anderen Formationen unterwegs sind.

Quite unique this proposal, I like it, my favorite part is the synergy felt between the drums and the saxophonist in the first song you show and the improvisations are of a high level, I love it.
