When the attempt to bring cultures closer together …
… becomes a project to be taken quite seriously.
It is the insatiable desire of a man who one day (for whatever reason) has had to leave his homeland and who suddenly finds himself uprooted on a foreign continent, with a culture that he does not understand. There always comes a day when you try to balance the new with the old, to reassess the past and create a unity between the two worlds. An important element in this endeavour is: the music.
Es ist ein unstillbares Verlangen des Menschen, der (aus welchem Grund auch immer) eines Tages seine Heimat verlassen musste und plötzlich sich wurzellos auf einem fremden Kontinent mit einer ihm unverständlichen Kultur wiederfindet. Es kommt immer der Tag, an dem man versucht, das Neue gegen das Alte aufzuwiegen, Vergangenes neu einzuordnen und eine Einheit zwischen den beiden Welten herzustellen. Ein wichtiges Element für dieses Vorhaben – die Musik.
Yahael Camara Onono, a London-born percussionist and the son of immigrants from West Africa, made this attempt with the formation of Balimaya Project 2019 to bridge the musical gap between his experiences in the UK and the still-living traditions of his parents. Not entirely unimportant in this was to focus attention specifically on the word, which is considered the pillar of the band's name.
Yahael Camara Onono, ein in London geborener Perkussionist und der Sohn Einwanderer aus Westafrika, unternahm diesen Versuch mit der Gründung von Balimaya Projekt 2019, um die musikalische Kluft zwischen seinen Erfahrungen in Großbritannien und den noch immer lebendigen Traditionen seiner Eltern zu überbrücken. Nicht ganz unwichtig dabei, das Augenmerk konkret auf das Wort zu richten, welches als Stütze des Band-Namens gilt.
In the Manika language, Balimaya has the ability to describe everything that constitutes the essence of a kinship. In countries such as Senegal and Mali, Balimaya represents the ideology of an extended family that goes far beyond blood relations, always standing up for each other, preserving the family's history together and never giving up pride in their origins.
Balimaya besitzt in der Manika-Sprache die Fähigkeit, all das zu beschreiben, was das Wesen einer Verwandtschaft ausmacht. In Ländern wie dem Senegal oder Mali steht Balimaya für die Ideologie einer Großfamilie, die weit über die Blutsverwandtschaft hinausgeht, immer füreinander einzustehen, gemeinsam die Geschichte der Familie aufrechtzuerhalten und den Stolz auf die eigene Herkunft nie abzulegen.
Growing up in London, Yahael began at a relatively early age to get involved with the music that his parents (a Nigerian and a Senegalese) seem to have put in his cradle. What could be more natural than to choose as his first instrument one of the drums that always define the rhythm of African music. At the same time, however, he was also influenced by Western music – and here he was particularly impressed by the expressive power of jazz.

Doch gleichzeitig strömte auch diese westliche Musik auf ihn ein – und hier beeindruckte ihn insbesondere die starke Ausdrucksweise des Jazz.
He has never seen jazz, in its definition, as something that is fixed and to which it is difficult to make changes. For Yahael Camara Onono, it was an ideal opportunity to express himself in many different musical forms. Of course, the colour of his skin did not play an insignificant role in this because on the streets of London, even the slightest nuance in the colour of your skin determines the possibility of boundless acceptance.
Er empfand Jazz nie in seiner Definition als etwas Eingefahrenes, an dem nur schwer Veränderungen zu vollziehen sind. Für Yahael Camara Onono war es die ideale Möglichkeit, sich auf vielfältige Weise musikalisch ausdrücken zu können. Selbstverständlich spielte dabei seine Hautfarbe keine unwesentliche Rolle, da auf den Straßen Londons auch die geringsten Nuancen, was die Hautfarbe betrifft, über die Möglichkeit einer grenzenlosen Akzeptanz entscheiden.
The attempt by Justin McKenzie and Adam Moses to start a movement within the European jazz scene with Jazz re:freshed was of great help in the realisation of his musical ideas. In England's metropolis, jazz was suddenly not only a musical style, but also a lifestyle, fashion, and art. The ideal basis for a rapprochement or even a unification of cultures.
Eine große Hilfe bei der Umsetzung seiner musikalischen Ideen war der Versuch von Justin McKenzie und Adam Moses, mit Jazz re:freshed eine Bewegung innerhalb des europäischen Jazz in Gang zu setzen. Denn plötzlich war der Jazz in Englands Metropole nicht einfach nur ein Musikstil, sondern auch Lebensart, Mode und Kunst. Somit die ideale Grundlage für die Annäherung oder gar Vereinigung der Kulturen.

I also like this kind of modern English jazz, although it's a bit different from what I know. But the videos are exceptional.
