Why that name? Fat Freddy's Drop, a “silly name that stucks”
What we see on stage today is a formation, that is one of the best live acts in the world in the field of jazz / rhythm 'n' blues and reggae. The project actually began in 2006 at the Detroit Movement Festival. It was there that the band decided to leave the path of soul and psychedelic music that they had been following and to embrace the broad spectrum of jazz. And it is a spectrum that is exploited to the full.
Heute erleben wir auf der Bühne eine Formation, die weltweit zu den besten Live-Acts im Bereich Jazz/Rhythm ’n’ Blues und Reggae überhaupt gehören. Das Projekt begann eigentlich erst im Jahr 2006 beim Detroit Movement Festival, wo die Band beschloss, den bis dahin gegangenen Weg des Soul und psychedelischer Musik aufzugeben und sich dem weiten Spektrum des Jazz zuzuwenden. Und diese Bandbreite wird auch voll genutzt.

In 2022, Fat Freddy's Drop toured Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany and the UK in Europe alone, showing what can happen when a good band is in demand by audiences and promoters. Before returning to New Zealand, they toured Australia and the United States.
Wie es aussehen kann, wenn eine gute Band beim Publikum und den Veranstaltern gefragt ist, zeigte sich 2022, als Fat Freddy’s Drop in Spanien, Portugal, Frankreich, Deutschland, Italien, Polen, den Niederlanden, Irland, Deutschland und Großbritannien - allein in Europa gastierten. Danach folgten dann Australien und die Vereinigten Staaten, bevor es zurück nach Neuseeland ging.
The only time they really took a break from the stage was during the Corona epidemic. The band used this time off to write a lot of new material, which can be found on the albums 'Wairunga' and 'Lock-In'. But almost more important for the creative output of Fat Freddy's Drop was the 2019 album 'Special Edition Part 1'.
Now the band have announced that they are hard at work on 'Special Edition Part 2'.
Eine wirkliche Pause von der Bühne gab es eigentlich nur während der Corona-Epidemie. Diese Auszeit nutzte die Band für das Erarbeiten vieler neuer Kompositionen, die sich in den Alben ‘Wairunga’ und ‘Lock-In’ wiederfinden. Doch beinahe noch wichtiger für das Schaffen von Fat Freddy’s Drop, war das 2019 erschienene Album ‘Special Edition Part 1’.
Nun hat die Band verkündet, dass sie an ‘Special Edition Part 2’ intensiv arbeitet.
It is also remarkable that the first albums of Fat Freddy's Drop like "Blackbird", "Dr. Boondigga" and "Based On A True Story" were not recorded in a studio. They are all live recordings that were polished by the producer and engineers in the studio. Even today, the guys claim that the spontaneous live jams are at least as important as the work in the studio.
Bemerkenswert zudem, dass die ersten Alben von Fat Freddy’s Drop, als da wären ‘Blackbird’, ‘Dr. Boondigga’ und ‘Based On A True Story’, allesamt nicht im Tonstudio aufgenommen wurden. Es handelt sich samt und sonders um Live-Mitschnitte, die danach vom Produzenten und den Technikern im Studio den Feinschliff bekamen. Noch heute behaupten die Jungs, dass die spontanen Live-Jams mindestens so wichtig, wie die Arbeit im Studio ist.

Ich war anfänglich skeptisch, ob ich die Jungs auf die Jazz-Bühne einladen sollte, da der Einfluss des Reggae oft sehr dominant scheint. Aber, einmal live erlebt, schmeißt du alle Bedenken über Bord.
