Liv Warfield has finally made the leap into jazz-funk with the release of her third solo album. It has been a long journey for this extraordinary artist with a distinctive voice.
Who can still remember “The New Power Generation”? Yes, we are talking about Prince. And one of the women who was part of “The New Generation” that he put together was this Liv Warfield.
Liv Warfield hat dieser Tage ihr 3. Solo-Album auf den Markt gebracht und hat damit den Schritt in den Jazz-Funk endgültig vollzogen. Es war ein längerer Weg, den die außergewöhnliche Künstlerin mit der unverkennbaren Stimme zurückgelegt hat.
Wer kann sich an die »The New Power Generation« erinnern? Ja, wir reden von Prince. Und eine Frau, aus der von ihm zusammengestellten neuen Generation, war jene Liv Warfield.
It was all about rock and funk of the noble kind – with Prince as an employer. Jazz seemed to be too complicated and certainly not suitable for earning a decent income. All of this seems to have faded into the background in the meantime. With the album “The Edge”, the artist, together with Bobby Sparks (keys), Mark Lettieri (guitar) and Jay McK (bass), convinces with a varied mix of Funk/Jazz and Afrobeat.

There was no way I could have predicted this career path. The daughter of a preacher who grew up in Peoria, Illinois, she was also considered a promising athlete while studying at Portland State University. That all changed when Prince saw a video of Liv Warfield performing her version of the Rolling Stones' classic 'Gimme Shelter' on YouTube. Soon after, she found herself at Paisley Park, Minnesota.
Vorherzusehen war dieser Werdegang eigentlich nicht. Liv Warfield has not only performed on three Prince albums, Lotusflow3r, 20TEN and Welcome 2 America, but also released her second album in 2014 called The Unexpected, which was not only produced by Prince. In 2017, Warfield and guitarist and singer Nancy Wilson (Heart) founded the formation "Roadcase Royale”. The resulting album “The First Thing First” served as a musical banner for the Women's March on Washington. The Illinois-born artist's popularity has benefited greatly as a result.

Das daraus resultierende Album „The First Thing First“ diente der Frauenbewegung „Women’s March on Washington“ als eine Art musikalischer Flagge, was der Popularität der Künstlerin aus Illinois sehr zugute kam.
It took another five years for Liv Warfield to completely reorganise and reorient herself, before taking the step towards jazz-funk with her third solo album, “The Edge”.
In short, the critics' verdict is as follows: "A well-thought-out and at the same time broad musical spectrum of powerful rock, catchy funk and deep soul, which reflects her experience of the last few years from working with various exceptional artists as well as the musical maturity she has gained from it.
Es hat dann weitere fünf Jahre gedauert, bis Liv Warfield sich einmal wieder vollkommen neu sortiert und orientiert hat, um mit ihrem dritten Solo-Album „The Edge“ den Schritt hin zum Jazz-Funk zu wagen.
Kurz zusammengefasst, beurteilt die Kritik das Resultat nun wie folgt: „Ein durchdachtes und gleichzeitig breit gefächertes musikalisches Spektrum aus powervollem Rock, eingängigem Funk und tiefgehendem Soul ihre Erfahrung der letzten Jahre aus der Zusammenarbeit mit diversen AusnahmekünstlerInnen sowie die daraus gewonnene musikalische Reife.“
