Coral Way - not only a Street in Miami
Not bad, for a completely untalented musician
As far as the new jazz albums released in recent weeks are concerned, “Coral Way” is one of my favourites. With his new album, Alfredo Rodriguez remains true to the principles of his compositions, which are based on his Cuban roots, but now introduces new aspects that we are not as used to. It is still jazz with a dash of timba, salsa and tango - but this time in a new outfit.
Was die Neuerscheinungen im Bereich Jazz-Alben der letzten Wochen betrifft, landet »Coral Way« in meiner Gunst in den obersten Rängen. Alfredo Rodriguez bleibt zwar mit seinem neuen Album den Grundsätzen seiner Kompositionen treu, die auf seiner kubanischen Herkunft beruhen, bringt aber nun neue Aspekte ein, die wir von ihm so nicht gewohnt sind. Noch immer der Jazz mit der Prise Timba, Salsa und Tango - dieses Mal jedoch in einem neuen Outfit.
Speaking about the genesis of the album, Rodriguez said: "I play what I live, and Coral Way is my new life. It's the name of the street where I've been composing this album for the last three years, and now it's me."
It seems to me that the pianist and composer has benefited from the move from Los Angeles to Miami and the birth of his daughter. No longer is there the Alfredo Rodriguez who often relied solely on his instrument to inspire him. No, all of a sudden there is a real life on the stage.
Rodriguez selbst sagt zu Entstehung des Albums: „Ich spiele, was ich lebe, und Coral Way ist mein neues Leben. Es ist der Name der Straße, in der ich in den letzten drei Jahren dieses Album komponiert habe, und jetzt bin ich es auch.“
Meiner Ansicht nach scheint der Umzug von Los Angeles nach Miami und die Geburt seiner Tochter dem Pianisten und Komponisten gutgetan zu haben. Nicht mehr vorhanden der Alfredo Rodriguez, der seine Inspirationen oft einzig seinem Instrument anvertraute. Nein, jetzt ist plötzlich richtiggehend Leben auf der Bühne.
"Coral Way" brings with it a full line-up of musicians of the highest calibre. In addition, Cimafunk and Alana Sinkëy as guest vocalists bring an extra dose of verve. Close your eyes and you can't help but feel like you're on the streets of Havana. Although, in terms of the diversity of its Latin American community and its individuality, Miami is probably not all that different from the Cuban capital.
»Coral Way« bringt eine komplette Formation hervorragender Musiker mit sich. Zudem bringen Cimafunk und Alana Sinkëy als Gastsängerinnen zusätzlichen Schwung mit. Schließt man die Augen, kann man sich dem Gefühl nicht erwehren, sich in den Straßen Havannas zu bewegen. Obwohl Miami sich wohl, was die vielfältige lateinamerikanische Gemeinschaft und deren Individualität betrifft, sich von der kubanischen Hauptstadt nicht mehr viel unterscheidet.
Rodriguez, who was considered by his teacher in Cuba to have no musical talent at all, found his way to the USA at the invitation of Quincy Jones. It was at the jazz festival in Montreux that he first heard the young Alfredo as a representative of his native Cuba. But it was not possible to make a quick trip to the United States from the island. Leaving Cuba also meant losing his citizenship. Nevertheless, he dared to go, and was rewarded by becoming successful. Not only has he been nominated for a Grammy for the song 'Guantanamera' from the album 'The Invasion Parade', but he has also performed on some of the most famous jazz stages.
Rodriguez, der übrigens von seinem Lehrer auf Kuba als musikalisch völlig untalentiert eingestuft wurde, fand seinen Weg in die USA über eine Einladung von Quincy Jones. Der hörte den jungen Alfredo nämlich in Montreux beim dortigen Jazz-Festival, auf dem dieser sein Heimatland Kuba vertrat. Doch einfach so mal kurz in die USA reisen, war auf der Insel nicht möglich. Kuba zu verlassen, bedeutete auch gleichzeitig die Staatsbürgerschaft zu verlieren. Er wagte trotzdem den Schritt und hatte Erfolg. Dazu zählt nicht nur die Grammy-Nominierung für den Song „Guantanamera“ aus dem Album »The Invasion Parade«, sondern auch Auftritte auf den bekanntesten Jazz-Bühnen.
Critics call Alfredo Rodriguez the "keyboard storyteller". And with good reason, if you take a closer look at some of his other albums. The Invasion Parade" was followed by "Tocororo" and "Duologue". They all reflect memories of Cuba. Being invited to perform on NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert is probably seen as a special recognition of his musical work.

Die Musik-Kritiker bezeichnen Alfredo Rodriguez als den “Geschichtenerzähler auf den Tasten”. Wohl zurecht, wenn man sich mit seinen weiteren Alben etwas intensiver beschäftigt. Neben dem erwähnten »The Invasion Parade« folgten dann »Tocororo« und »Duologue«. Allesamt spiegeln sie die Erinnerungen an Kuba wider. Als besondere Wertschätzung seines musikalischen Schaffens ist wohl auch die Einladung zum Tiny Desk Concert von NPR Music zu sehen.

Sounds like a teacher with no talent to teach. I'm so happy Rodriguez knew better, and followed his passions anyway. How many of us give up the first time someone tells them they have no talent?
