Keeping the Gypsy-Jazz alive!
Have you ever heard of a certain Jean Reinhart? Need some help? Born in Belgium in 1910. Later became French. But that's not so important, because Gypsies (Roma) never really know where they're welcome anyway. John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia or Al Di Meola, if you asked them (or could ask them) would surely be firmly convinced that it could only be Django Reinhardt, whose virtuosity on the guitar had always fascinated them themselves.
Schon mal etwas von einem gewissen Jean Reinhart gehört? Eine kleine Hilfestellung nötig? Geboren 1910 in Belgien. Später wurde er Franzose. Aber das ist weniger wichtig, da Zigeuner (Roma) ohnehin nie so genau wissen, wo sie überhaupt willkommen sind. John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia oder Al Di Meola, wenn man sie fragen würde (oder fragen könnte) wären mit Sicherheit fest davon überzeugt, es könne sich nur um Django Reinhardt handeln, dessen Virtuosität auf der Gitarre sie selbst seit jeher faszinierte.
Jason Anick, Olli Soikkeli, Max O'Rourke and Greg Loughman probably felt the same way when they chose Django Reinhardt's song "Rhythm Future" as the name of their formation. After all, the ensemble has only one thing on its mind – to keep gypsy jazz alive in its original form. And this in spite of the fact that musical trends from the Balkans or Spain seem to be more popular at the moment.
Gleiches fühlten wohl auch Jason Anick, Olli Soikkeli, Max O’Rourke und Greg Loughman, als sie sich Django Reinhardts Song-Titel „Rhythm Future“ aussuchten, um ihn als Namen ihrer Formation zu nutzen. Denn das Ensemble hat nur eines im Blick – den Gypsy-Jazz in seiner ursprünglichen Form beizubehalten. Und das, obwohl musikalische Strömungen vom Balkan oder aus Spanien populärer schienen.
On their debut album, they were still fully immersed in the compositions of classical gypsy jazz, but on their second album, Travels, their own compositions take precedence, which may also please jazz fans outside the gypsy zone. For in this album, the experiences that Rhythm Future gathered on their extensive tour have been reworked into music.
Im Debütalbum noch voll und ganz in den Kompositionen des klassischen Gyipsy-Jazz eingebunden, kommen mit dem zweiten Album “Travels” Eigenkompositionen einen vorrangigen Stellenwert, die ebenfalls Jazz-Freunde außerhalb der Gypsy-Zone erfreuen könnten. Denn in diesem Album sind die Erfahrungen ins Musikalische umgearbeitet, die Rhythm Future auf ihrer ausgiebigen Tournee eingesammelt hat.
Let's have a quick look at the musicians who have dedicated themselves to this form of jazz. One of the youngest professors at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Jason Anick, who has also taught Steve Wonder and John Jorgonson. Joined by the Finnish "Boy Wonder" (as he is called in the media) Olli Soikkeli, who now lives in the USA and who has long since made a name for himself as an excellent guitarist.

Als da wären, einer der jüngsten Professoren am Berklee College of Music in Boston, Jason Anick, der sein Können auch Steve Wonder oder John Jorgonson zur Verfügung stellte. Dazu gesellt sich der finnische Wunderknabe (so in den Medien tituliert) Olli Soikkeli, der jetzt in den USA lebend, sich längst einen Namen als ausgezeichneter Gitarrist gemacht hat.
Max O'Rourke, when he was just 19 years old, has been called one of the best gypsy jazz musicians in America. In 2015 he received the Django Fest Northwest Saga Award. He is also always a welcome guest when greats such as Gonzalo Bergara or John Jorgenson go into the studio with him. He is accompanied by bassist Greg Loughman, who is one of the most sought-after studio musicians around. His bass playing can be heard on recordings by Sheila Jordan, Curtis Fuller and George Garzone.
Max O'Rourke hat man, da war er mal gerade 19 Jahre alt, als einen der besten Gypsy-Jazz-Musiker Amerikas bezeichnet. 2015 wurde ihm der Saga Award des Django-Fest-Northwest verliehen. Auch er ist stets ein gern gesehener Gast, wenn Größen woe Gonzalo Bergara oder John Jorgenson ins Studio gehen. Dazu gesellt sich dann noch der Bassist Greg Loughman, der einer der meist gefragtesten Studiomusikern überhaupt ist. Sein Bass-Spiel ist daher auch bei Aufnahmen von Sheila Jordan, Curtis Fuller und George Garzone zu hören

There is nothing more to say. Top musicians themselves. There are quite a few of these gypsy jazz bands.
In this case, I particularly liked the classic, French style.
Where I grew up, the "Jazz Manouche" was part of every major event.
Whether Stéphane Grappelli, Sébastien Giniaux, Tornado Rosenberg or Schnuckenack Reinhardt – this music was always present.
