Wenn aus den Wurzeln der Volksmusik Jazz erblüht

Before I go on to talk about the project, I'd like to introduce the man who not only lends his name to the whole thing, but is also largely responsible for organising it musically.
Herbert Pixner was born on 11th October 1975 in Merano, Italy. More precisely, on a mountain farm in Walten (South Tyrol). As far as his choice of musical instruments is concerned, he began his musical career with the clarinet. This was followed by the diatonic harmonica, the flügelhorn, and the tuba.
Bevor ich mich dem Projekt zuwende, möchte ich zuerst den Mann vorstellen, der dem Ganzen seinen Namen verleiht, sondern auch maßgeblich für die musikalische Gestaltung die Verantwortung trägt.
Herbert Pixner wurde am 11. Oktober 1975 in Meran /Italien geboren. Um es genau zu sagen, auf einem Bergbauernhof in Walten (Südtirol). Was die Auswahl beim Erlernen von Musikinstrumenten betrifft, begann er mit der Klarinette. Es folgten die Diatonische Harmonika, Flügelhorn und die Tuba.
But before Pixner decided to devote himself entirely to music, he went on to become a trained carpenter. It wasn't until 1995 that he began his studies at the Carinthian State Conservatory. He specialised in IGP Styrian harmonica and clarinet, but never finished.
He went on to work as a Radio and Television presenter and as a music teacher to support himself. In 2011 he moved from Italy to Austria and made his home in Innsbruck with his wife and two children.
Herbert Pixner wandte sich jedoch ursprünglich nicht ausschließlich der Musik zu. Er absolvierte eine Ausbildung (Lehre) zum Tischler. Erst 1995 begann er sein Studium am Kärntner Landeskonservatorium, Studienrichtung IGP Steirische Harmonika und Klarinette, welches er allerdings nie beendete.
Seinen Lebensunterhalt bestritt er als Radio- und Fernsehmoderator und Musiklehrer. 2011 zog es ihn dann von Italien nach Österreich, wo er mit seiner Frau und den beiden Kindern eine neue Heimat in Innsbruck gefunden hat.
Before the founding of the Herbert Pixner Project, he was a founder or member of several bands himself. To name just a few: Lechner-Kerer-Pixner Trio, the legendary St. Pauls Tschässbänd or the Südtiroler Tanzlmusig. It was not until the 2007/2008 season that the project to which Pixner has lent his name really took off. He has also composed for a number of wind orchestras and well-known regional bands. He has also worked on commissions for theatre and cabaret. Until 2012 he was artistic director of the traditional Steinegg Live Festival.

Um nur einige wenige zu nennen: Lechner-Kerer-Pixner Trio, legendary St. Pauls Tschässbänd oder die Südtiroler Tanzlmusig. Erst 2007/2008 begann es so richtig mit dem Projekt, dem Pixner seinen Namen verleiht. Nebenbei komponierte er für etliche Blasorchester und regional sehr bekannte Kapellen. Dazu gesellten sich Auftragsarbeiten für das Theater und das Kabarett. Bis 2012 hatte er die künstlerische Leitung des traditionellen Steinegg Live Festivals inne.
Herbert Pixner's endeavour to never lose sight of the folk music as the foundation of his work and his project in relation to jazz has always been and still is characteristic. For this he has not only been honoured many times, but has also been engaged again and again as musical director or composer. The music for “Die Hard, Brandner” was composed by Pixner. The Spielberg Festival was under his direction, as was the “Vertikal-Horizontal” in Neukirchen am Großvenediger. He is also the producer of the programme “Pixner's BACKstage” for Servus TV.
Das, was das Schaffen von Herbert Pixner und seinem Projekt im Hinblick auf den Jazz ausmacht, ist und bleibt sein Streben, die Volksmusik als Grundlage nie aus den Augen zu verlieren. Dafür wurde er nicht nur vielfach ausgezeichnet, sondern auch immer wieder als musikalischer Leiter oder Komponist verpflichtet. Die Musik zu »Stirb langsam, Brandner« stammt von Pixner. Das Spielberg-Festival stand unter seiner Leitung – genau wie das »Vertikal-Horizontal« in Neukirchen am Großvenediger. Zudem ist er als Produzent der Sendung »Pixner’s BACKstage« für Servus TV in Verantwortung.

With playful, lascivious tenderness, powerful rock and blues riffs, brilliant technique, a bold love of improvisation and borrowings from tango, flamenco and jazz, they have been delighting audiences for years. Herbert Pixner has expanded the project for the 2024 summer tour. In addition to the usual line-up of Manuel Randi (guitars), Werner Unterlercher (bass) and Ysaline Lentze (harp), Alessandro Trebo will also be joining them on the grand piano.«
Für das Jahr 2024 kündigt das Kunstfestival »Bell’Arte« an:

Für die Sommer-Tour 2024 hat Herbert Pixner das Projekt personell erweitert. Neben der gewohnten Besetzung mit Manuel Randi (Gitarren), Werner Unterlercher (Bass) und Ysaline Lentze (Harfe) wird nun auch Alessandro Trebo am Konzertflügel mit „on tour“ sein.«

I have no other words than pure aesthetics.
An interesting guy (a guy because he's much younger than me, haha), went from a high mountain farm to music and achieved a lot.
Although he plays different styles from all continents (tango, blues, etc) I like that touch of Europeanness that comes from all the tracks.
