Although born in Montreal, Canada, Jowee Omicil was influenced early in his youth by the culture of his parents' native country, Haiti. After his mother's early death, his father, Joseph Omicil, a university professor, was in charge of his son's education. This included access to the spiritually influenced music of Haiti. He picked up an alto saxophone for the first time at the age of 15 and has never let go the instrument like the clarinet, flute, or the saxophone since.
