„4-Needle-Knitting” - Jazz, Blues, Funk & Soul
In Paris last week — in Nantes today!
Having already arrived in France, and having been very happy to persuade "Les Yeux D'La Tête" to play at the Jazz Matinee last week, I continued my journey through "La Grande Nation" and headed for Nantes, close to the Atlantic. And not without good reason, because this is the home of a band whose music is no less exciting than that of their colleagues in Paris — and yet it is fundamentally different. We're talking about "Malted Milk". For 20 years now, they've been exploring a path between jazz, soul, funk and blues.
Da bereits in Frankreich angelangt und sehr froh darüber, in der letzten Woche »Les Yeux D'La Tête« zu einem Gastspiel auf der Bühne der Jazz-Matinee überredet haben zu können, setzte ich meine Reise in der “Grande Nation” fort und begab mich auf den Weg nach Nantes, nahe dem Atlantik. Nicht ganz ohne Grund, denn von hier kommt eine Formation, deren Musik nicht weniger spannend, als die der Kollegen aus Paris klingt - und sich doch grundlegend von ihr unterscheidet. Die Rede ist von »Malted Milk«, die unter diesem Namen seit nun 20 Jahren ihren Weg zwischen Jazz, Soul, Funk und Blues suchen.
The members of 'Malted Milk', who have always been accused by jazz purists of flirting with pop rather than fully embracing classical jazz, are : Arnaud Fradin - guitar and vocals, Igor Pichon - bass, Richard Housset - drums, Damien Cornelis - piano, Eric Chambouleyron - guitar, Pierre-Marie Humeau - trumpet and Vincent Aubert - trombone. From time to time they are joined by female voices.
Die Mitglieder von »Malted Milk«, die sich seit jeher den Vorwurf der Jazz-Puristen anhören müssen, mehr mit dem Pop zu liebäugeln, als sich uneingeschränkt dem klassischen Jazz zuzuwenden, sind: Arnaud Fradin - Gitarre und Gesang, Igor Pichon - Bass, Richard Housset - Schlagzeug, Damien Cornelis - Piano, Eric Chambouleyron - Gitarre, Pierre-Marie Humeau - Trompete und Vincent Aubert - Posaune. Gelegentlich gesellen sich auch weibliche Stimmen dazu.
In celebration of the band's 20th anniversary, they packed the former Stereolux factory in Nantes, which is now the biggest music palace in the "world". Not only the fans but also the critics were swept off their feet. One of the headlines of the next day read: "Now we know what it sounded like when the walls of Jericho were being shaken to pieces".
What I especially like about the band and their style is that you never get the feeling that you are getting a cheap copy.
Zum 20-jährigen Jubiläum der Band füllte man die ehemalige Fabrik »Stereolux« in Nantes, die heutzutage als größter Musikpalast bezeichnet wird. Nicht ausschließlich die Fans, sondern auch die Kritik ließ sich von der Performance mitreißen. Eine Schlagzeile am nächsten Tag las sich so: Jetzt wissen wir, wie es sich anhörte, als die Mauern von Jericho erschüttert wurden.
Was mich insbesondere bei der Band und ihrem Stil gefällt, ist die Tatsache, nie das Gefühl zu haben, hier ein billiges Imitat vorgesetzt bekommen zu haben.
The band's greatest success beyond the borders of France came between 2015 and 2017, when they launched the "Milk and Green" project with singer Toni Green, who was born in the US, and released the theme as an album. At the time, Malted Milk was a fixture at almost every European festival. The album sold more than 10,000 copies. This is quite impressive for a band that was only known regionally.
Über die Grenzen Frankreichs hinaus hatte die Band ihren größten Erfolg in den Jahren 2015 bis 2017, als sie mit der aus den USA stammenden Sängerin Toni Green das Projekt »Milk and Green« ins Leben riefen und als Album auf den Markt brachten. In jener Zeit waren »Malted Milk« nahezu auf allen europäischen Festivals vertreten. Das Album verkaufte sich mehr als 10.000 Mal - was für eine zuvor nahezu nur regional bekannte Formation sehr beachtlich ist.
Over the years, the number of members in the band has undergone a constant change. It started as a duo (harmonica & guitar). At one point there were 11 musicians. Now it has settled down to 6 or 7. With the album "Love, Tears & Guns", however, everything was rearranged once again by renaming the band "Malted Milk Soul Orchestra" and going on stage with 16 musicians.
Strings, percussion, horns, choir singers and guest musicians who bring the soul to the boil even more than before!
Im Laufe der Jahre hat sich übrigens die Anzahl der Mitglieder innerhalb der Band ständig verändert. Was anfing als Duo (Mundharmonika & Gitarre), wuchs zeitweilig auf 11 Musiker an. Inzwischen hat es sich bei 6 oder 7 eingependelt. Mit dem Album »Love, Tears & Guns« wurde dann jedoch wieder alles neu sortiert, indem man sich kurzerhand umbenannte und ab sofort unter dem Namen »Malted Milk Soul Orchestra« mit gleich 16 Musikern die Bühne stürmte.
Streicher, Perkussion, Bläser, Chorsänger und Gastmusiker, die den Soul noch mehr zum Kochen bringen!

The most organic thing about jazz is that it mixes different influences and creates new sounds and rhythms on one higher level.
