Jazz-Matinee — Ibrahim Maalouf

When music can captivate the audience

...then let's meet the magician today!

If the name of an artist is to be mentioned who stands for world music like hardly any other musician, then the name of Ibrahim Maalouf should not go unmentioned. Born in Beirut in 1980 during the civil war, the instrumentalist grew up in France, where he is one of the most successful and popular artists ever.
Multiple Grammy winner Jon Batiste claims his colleague is a living legend.

In musical terms, it all began with the study of the classical trumpet. However, Ibrahim Maalouf soon discovered the world of jazz, where he quickly gained a foothold — but not to the detriment of other musical styles. His album 'Capacity to Love', which has been on the shelves since 2022, is proof that hip-hop is also part of his repertoire.

The specialised press (“Jazz-Fun”) gives the following evaluation “That Ibrahim Maalouf is an excellent trumpeter, whose style is reminiscent of the achievements of the great masters, has already been proven on his previous albums. That he is a visionary, an artist who combines a whole range of different influences, an experimenter, he has confirmed to us with this successful endeavour, which is undoubtedly 'Capacity to Love'. Will jazz lovers like this album? Let's hope so because it's well worth your attention.”

By the way, this is already the 17th album that Maalouf has released. A man who claims to be most at home in the basin of jazz, Latin, pop and world music, he fills the biggest temples of music in a very short time after announcing his appearances. It was none other than Quincy Jones who was responsible for his discovery and promotion, and who has been at the head of his protégé's career for many years now.

As always, Maalouf surrounded himself with outstanding artists who have achieved considerable popularity in their musical style for the production of “Capacity to Love”. They all came together in the recording studio: Erick 'The Architect' from the Flatbush Zombies, Matthieu Chedid, Shelea, the Brazilian Flavia Coelho, Gregory Porter and Tank and the Bangas from New Orleans.
It is a mixture that one would seldom expect to hear from a jazz musician. But in my opinion, it was well worth it!

I have one 20W Renkforce amplifier connected to the computer I'm listening to this from, and I think I have at least 30-year-old Sony speakers. The sound of the first song was really magical. But you have to work at it.
I was just at an MKNŽ concert where they had long guitar pieces...

This second song reminds me of Jan Garbarek's Hasta Siempre

What do I know, brass instruments and all that...

In the third one, I liked the violin and trumpet playing the best, somewhere in the 2nd minute and onwards ...

The fourth one is great funky/hip-hop rap/brass also the video is great, I saw the French frog/Citroen, over a million views...

This last one is a great film score, a wonderful basis for the visualization of the story.

Yeah, Beirut used to be a significant place but now it's a shithole.

Thanks for sharing, I learned something new again. I'm meeting top musicians through you. I have no other sources.

!DHEDGE

That's what I call the kind of constructive criticism that I love to put in the bathtub, soak in and enjoy the day.

Yes, enjoying the day is one such, highly valued value for me, a value that is shattered by the tens of interactions I have with people daily... 😵‍💫
