When an artist is the recipient of so many accolades from the music critics, their assessment of her should also be the beginning of today's Jazz-Matinée: “All the dialogues in the compositions are evidence of Rita Payés' great erudition and musical awareness, and the improvisations show the enormous imagination and technical ability of the entire ensemble. Her vocal artistry, the unique timbre of her voice with its sensual phrasing, the elegance, and the depth of her interpretation make this music both beautiful and phenomenal”.

In the spotlight today is Rita Payés Roma (* 26 September 1999 in Vilassar de Mar/Spain), who began her musical training as a child on the piano before picking up the instrument she still plays on stage - the trombone - at the age of eight.
The fact that both of her parents are professional musicians may well have played a part in this. Elisabeth Roma (her mother) is a classical guitarist. She has recorded two albums with her daughter: 'Imagina' and 'Como la piel'.

The charismatic presence of Rita Payés Roma on the stage is not only due to her playing on the trombone, but also to her voice.
At the age of 16, she released her first album, "Joan Chamorro presents Rita Payés", featuring Scott Hamilton, Dick Oats, Scott Robinson, Toni Belenguer, Jo Krause and Joan Chamorro, among others.
After this release, the young artist's fame spread far beyond the borders of Spain, as she was invited to perform in France, Switzerland, Italy, Morocco, Sweden, and Greece.
Die charismatische Bühnenpräsenz von Rita Payés Roma ist allerdings nicht ausschließlich ihrem Posaunenspiel zu verdanken, sondern auch ihrer Stimme, die den Gesang (als Instrument) so besonders macht.
Bereits mit 16 Jahren veröffentlichte sie ihr erstes Album “Joan Chamorro presents Rita Payés“, auf dem unter anderem Scott Hamilton, Dick Oats, Scott Robinson, Toni Belenguer, Jo Krause und Joan Chamorro zu hören sind. Im Anschluss an diese Veröffentlichung wurde die junge Künstlerin weit über die Grenzen Spaniens bekannt, denn es folgten Einladungen nach Frankreich, der Schweiz, Italien, Marokko, Schweden und Griechenland.
At the moment, Rita Payés Roma can be seen and heard on stage once again with her mother, Elisabeth Roma, but this does not mean (as in previous years) that the musical focus has shifted to the performance of Classical Music, Bossa Nova, Fado or Bolero. This time Elisabeth Roma is also involved in jazz.
This can be seen in particular in her collaboration with the WDR Big Band in Cologne. In her concerts, Rita Payés is now concentrating on her own compositions.
Augenblicklich ist Rita Payés Roma wieder vermehrt mit ihrer Mutter Elisabeth Roma auf der Bühne zu hören und sehen, was allerdings (nicht wie in den Jahren zuvor) nicht bedeutet, dass der musikalische Fokus auf das klassische Spiel, Bossa Nova, Fado oder Bolero gerichtet ist. Nein, dieses Mal bringt auch Elisabeth Roma sich in den Jazz ein. Besonders gut zu hören, bei der Zusammenarbeit mit der Big Band des WDR (Westdeutschen Rundfunks). Größtenteils sind es die eigenen Kompositionen, die Rita Payés bei ihren Konzerten nun in den Vordergrund schiebt.
Rita Payés' decision to go down this road and to bring fresh ideas to her productions with David Casamitjana (of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band), Juan Berbin and Carlos Freitas has led to a breakthrough in Latin America. The best proof of this is the Latin Grammy award that she won two years ago.
Elisabeth Roma explains her musical commitment to her daughter as follows: "The incorporation of my ideas about classical guitar into Rita's repertoire. This allows me to combine musicality and technique with my own personal sounds and Rita's melodies and improvisations".
Seit Rita Payés diesen Weg einschlug und auch mit David Casamitjana (Sant Andreu Jazz Band), Juan Berbin und Carlos Freitas frische Ideen in ihre Produktionen einbezieht, gelang ihr auch der Durchbruch in Lateinamerika. Bester Beweis dafür – die Überreichung des Latin Grammy im vorletzten Jahr. Elisabeth Roma erklärt ihr musikalisches Engagement für die Tochter so: “Meine Vorstellungen von klassischer Gitarre, in das Repertoire von Rita einfließen zu lassen. So gelingt Musikalität und Technik mit den persönlichen Klängen meinerseits mit den Melodien und Improvisationen von Rita zu kombinieren.”

A beautiful and lovely voice, and I think her mother is happy too, always by her daughter's side. A classic artistic family.
Though I'm not necessarily convinced that an active “family conglomerate” is particularly good for creativity? I think the “classical” influence of the mother is a little too formative in this particular case. A little more jazzy experimentation from the daughter is what I would like to hear more of.
What do you know, maybe daughter will break free from the chain ...
It is not surprising that she could also pick an instrument to play with at such a tender age. Her parents did inspire her, and her voice is lovely.
