When the roots of Mauritius mingle with the roots of Britain and a young tree grows out of it, what kind of fruit will it bear one day?
With Joseph Deenmamode, those who love to listen to music no longer have to wonder. Before releasing his debut album in 2014, which caused a sensation among lovers of modern jazz (which mixes hip-hop, jazz, and electronics), he first gave himself a catchy name. He called not only himself, but also the album Mo Kolours to get his “musician's name” into the conversation more quickly.

Wenn sich mauritische Wurzeln mit britischen vermischen und daraus ein junger Baum erwächst, darf man gespannt sein, welche Früchte er eines Tages tragen wird? Bei Joseph Deenmamode muss sich der Musikliebhaber diese Frage nicht mehr stellen. Bevor er 2014 mit seinem Debütalbum für Furore unter den Liebhabern des Modern Jazz (eine Mischung aus Hip-Hop, Jazz und Elektronik) sorgte, gab er sich zunächst einen einprägsamen Namen. Um seinen "Musikernamen" schneller ins Gespräch zu bringen, nannte er nicht nur sich, sondern auch das Album Mo Kolours.

So what is it that distinguishes the compositions of Mo Colour from those of his colleagues (especially in the English jazz music scene), who have long since incorporated rap and the possibilities of digital technology into their sound?
It is unmistakably the traditional Sega music that is at home in Mauritius. On the one hand, there is the sound of Fela Kuti — but as if he were in the studio with J. Dilla. But 2024 Mo Kolours sounds like Mo Kolours because both Kuti and Dilla are dead.

Da aber sowohl Kuti als auch Dilla schon tot sind, klingt 2024 Mo Kolours wie Mo Kolours.

In any case, I do not know of any other jazz musician who has experimented so intensively with instruments such as the djembé, the ravanne and the caxixi.
But there was also a time when it was impossible to ignore the strong influence of Paul White in the productions of Mo Kolour. Where percussion had previously been the rhythm, drum computers were suddenly in use. All of this changed when Deenmamode went to Japan for five years in order to question himself: “I had time to really find out what makes me tick musically. Japan helped me get back to those subconscious tendencies, to really dig deep and think about the aspects that make up my story.”

Ich kenne jedenfalls kaum einen Jazzmusiker, der so intensiv mit Instrumenten wie Djembé, Ravanne und Caxixi experimentiert. Es gab aber auch eine Zeit, in der der starke Einfluss von Paul White in Mo Kolours Produktionen nicht zu überhören war. War es zuvor die Perkussion, die den Rhythmus bestimmte, so kam plötzlich auch der Drumcomputer zum Einsatz. Das änderte sich, als Deenmamode für fünf Jahre nach Japan ging, um sich selbst in Frage zu stellen:”Ich hatte Zeit, wirklich herauszufinden, wie ich musikalisch ticke. Japan hat mir geholfen, zu diesen unterbewussten Neigungen zurückzukehren, wirklich in die Tiefe zu gehen und über die Aspekte nachzudenken, die meine Geschichte ausmachen.”

Now Mo Kolours is back with the album 'Original Flow', which he has filled with eleven songs, recorded with musicians from all over the world.
It has been described by critics as a nouveau of British-Soul-Nouveau with an Intimate Fusion of Jazz and a Dash of Hip-Hop. He says: “I'm proud of the creative process behind this album. I come from a tradition of spending hours listening to records, and I wanted to create my own samples to find the perfect loop that no other producer could get their hands on. I decided to invite a group of friends and acquaintances, who also happened to be incredible musicians, to a studio in Crystal Palace to improvise on some loose ideas I had. We spent the whole day recording.”

Nun legt Mo Kolours das Album ”Original Flow” vor, das er (eingespielt mit Musikern aus aller Welt) gefüllt hat. Kritiker kategorisieren es als britischen Street-Soul-Nouveau mit intimem Jazz-Fusion und einer Prise Hip-Hop. Er selbst sagt dazu: "Ich bin stolz auf den kreativen Prozess dieses Albums. Ich komme aus einer Tradition, in der ich stundenlang Platten durchgehört habe, und ich wollte meine eigenen Samples kreieren, um den perfekten Loop zu finden, den kein anderer Produzent in die Finger bekommt. Ich beschloss, eine Gruppe von Freunden und Bekannten, die zufällig auch unglaubliche Musiker sind, in ein Studio in Crystal Palace einzuladen, um auf der Grundlage einiger loser Ideen, die ich hatte, zu improvisieren. Wir verbrachten den ganzen Tag damit, alles aufzunehmen.

I don't know this musician because I don't listen to this kind of music, but the third track Time is interesting to me because it has a great mix of African instruments.
And the improvisation in Sofar London, I've watched a few of those guys, I call them troubadours, because with one instrument and a whole bunch of electronics, they pull out the most they can.
And the last one, Biddies, is a perfectly synchronized video backing! (I used to do that, but it was never at that high level).
