Mit »Mustard n’ Onions« legen Ghoast-Note 2024 ein Album vor, das eine unmissverständliche Botschaft in sich trägt: Lasst uns Spaß haben und dabei das Leben in vollen Zügen genießen.
Das Resultat zeigt Einblick in das, wie es sich anhört, wenn Energie und gute Laune im Tonstudio Einzug halten. Somit sind die besten Voraussetzungen dafür geschaffen, die Jungs aus Dallas (Texas/USA) auf die Bühne der Jazz-Matinee zu bitten, um ein Teil dieser Stimmung hautnah einfangen zu können.
Drummer Robert 'Sput' Searight can probably be described as the head of the group (in terms of the musicians involved). The group is constantly changing. However, it was also percussionist Nate Werth who, together with Searight, came up with the idea of forming a jazz collective in 2014, which would also leave enough room for hip-hop and funk in the compositions. Their first album 'Swagism', released in 2018, was an immediate success, featuring bassist Mono Neon (formerly of Prince), keyboardist Xavier Tablin (of Toto), saxophonist and arranger Sylvester Onyejiaka (Snarky Puppy) and Bernard Wright on piano.
Der als Kopf der (was die mitwirkenden Musiker betrifft) sich ständig im Umbruch befindenden Formation, ist wohl der Schlagzeuger Robert ‘Sput’ Searight zu bezeichnen. Obwohl es auch der Perkussionist Nate Werth war, der zusammen mit Searight 2014 die Idee einbrachte, ein Jazz-Kollektiv zu gründen, das auch dem Hip-Hop und dem Funk genügend Raum in den Kompositionen gewährt.Mit dem Bassisten Mono Neon (früher bei Prince), dem Keyboarder Xavier Tablin (von Toto), dem Saxofonisten und Arrangeur Sylvester Onyejiaka (Snarky Puppy) und Bernard Wright am Piano waren die gefunden, die das erste Album 2018 »Swagism« direkt zu einem Erfolg werden ließen.
In 2015, the album "Fortified"was released, which caught the attention of music journalists, but never really caught the attention of the public (because live performances were few and far between). But that all changed very quickly with the release of Swagism. The release of 'Mustard n' Onions', with its 15 tracks, will inevitably have a huge impact on the group's ever-growing popularity. It is Sput' Searight's firm belief that the jazz public is thirsty for a little more rhythm.
2015 war zwar auch schon das Album »Fortified« erschienen, mit man die Musikjournalisten auf sich aufmerksam machte, jedoch (weil Live-Aufritte rar gesät waren) vom Publikum nie so richtig wahrgenommen wurde. Doch änderte sich das alles rasant mit »Swagism«. Das nun erschienene »Mustard n’ Onions« mit seinen 15 Songs wird unweigerlich an der immer größer werdenden Popularität der Formation enorme Wirkung zeigen. ‘Sput’ Searight ist nämlich der festen Überzeugung, dass das Jazz-Publikum regelrecht nach mehr Rhythmus dürstet.
And (and I can tell you this in advance) the thirst is going to be quenched. Be it with "JB's Out! (Do It Baby)"** or the groovy "Bad Knees" - it is straight to the point from the very first moment. However, in order to make sure that the compositions don't just go in one direction, the "spice" of Soul has not been completely ignored. The best examples of this are "Grandma's Curtains" and "Nard's Right". The latter is a song by Bernard Wright, who unfortunately died far too early in 2022.
Und (dies darf ich vorab verraten) der Durst wird gestillt. Sei es mit ”JB’s Out! (Do It Baby)” oder das groovy ”Bad Knees” - es geht vom ersten Moment an voll an die Sache. Um die Kompositionen jedoch nicht nur eine eine ganz bestimmte Richtung laufen zu lassen, ließ man das “Gewürz” Soul nicht vollkommen unberücksichtigt. Bestens zu verfolgen bei ”Grandma’s Curtains” und ”Nard’s Right” - einem Song von Bernard Wright, der 2022 leider viel zu früh starb.
Ghoast-Note themselves believe that with this album they have finally found the harmony within the group that they need to realise their vision musically in the way that was originally planned for 2014. This is also reflected in the fact that every member of the band has contributed at least one of his or her own compositions to the album.'Sput' puts it this way: "The way the recordings were made was authentic. But this time we took a more strategic approach".
Die Band Ghoast-Note ist selbst fest davon überzeugt, jetzt, mit diesem Album, endlich die Harmonie innerhalb der Gruppe gefunden zu haben, die es braucht, um ihre Visionen musikalisch so umzusetzen, wie es ursprünglich 2014 geplant war. Dies spiegelt sich auch darin wieder, dass jedes Bandmitglied mindestens eine eigene Komposition zum Album beisteuerte.’Sput’ drückt es so aus: "Die Art und Weise, wie die Aufnahmen entstanden sind, war authentisch, aber dieses Mal sind wir strategischer vorgegangen.”
