Broadcom develops custom chips for Google and other huge cloud companies. It also makes essential networking gear that large server clusters need to tie thousands of AI chips together. Within AI, Broadcom has largely been overshadowed by Nvidia, whose graphics processing units, or GPUs, power most of the large language models being developed at OpenAI, Microsoft, Google and Amazon and also enable the heftiest AI workloads.
Despite having a lower profile, Broadcom's accelerator chips, which the company calls XPUs, have become a key piece of the AI ecosystem.
"Why it's really shooting up is because they're talking about AI, AI, AI, AI," Eric Ross, chief investment strategist at Cascend, told CNBC's "Squawk Box" earlier this month.
Intel, which for decades was the dominant U.S. chipmaker, has been mostly shut out of AI. Its server chips lag far behind Nvidia's, and the company has also lost market share to longtime rival Advanced Micro Devices while spending heavily on new factories.
Intel's board ousted Pat Gelsinger from the CEO role on Dec. 1, after a tumultuous four-year tenure.
"I think someone more innovative might have seen the AI wave coming," Paul Argenti, professor of management at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business, said in an interview on "Squawk Box" after the announcement.
An Intel spokesperson declined to comment.
Broadcom is now worth about $1.1 trillion and is the eighth U.S. tech company to cross the trillion-dollar mark. It's the second most valuable chip company, behind Nvidia, which has driven the AI boom to a $3.4 trillion valuation, trailing only Apple among all public companies. Nvidia's stock price soared 178% this year, but actually did better in 2023, when it gained 239%.
Until four years ago, Intel was the world's most valuable chipmaker, nearing a $300 billion market cap in early 2020. The company is now worth about $85 billion, just got booted off the Dow Jones Industrial Average — replaced by Nvidia — and has been in talks to sell off core parts of its business. Intel now ranks 15th in market cap among semiconductor companies globally.
'Not meant for everybody'
Following the Avago-Broadcom merger in 2015, the combined company's biggest business was chips for TV set-top boxes and broadband routers. Broadcom still makes Wi-Fi chips used in laptops as well as the iPhone and other smartphones.
After a failed bid to buy mobile chip giant Qualcomm in 2018, Broadcom turned its attention to software companies. The capstone of its spending spree came in 2022 with the announced acquisition of server virtualization software vendor VMware for $61 billion. Software accounted for 41% of Broadcom's $14 billion in revenue in the most recent quarter, thanks in part to VMware.
What's exciting Wall Street is Broadcom's role working with cloud providers to build custom chips for AI. The company's XPUs are generally simpler and less expensive to operate than Nvidia's GPUs, and they're designed to run specific AI programs efficiently.
Cloud vendors and other large internet companies are spending billions of dollars a year on Nvidia's GPUs so they can build their own models and run AI workloads for customers. Broadcom's success with custom chips is setting up an AI spending showdown with Nvidia, as hyperscale cloud companies look to differentiate their products and services from their rivals.
Broadcom's chips aren't for everyone, as only a handful of companies can afford to design and build their own custom processors.
"You have to be a Google, you have to be a Meta, you have to be a Microsoft or an Oracle to be able to use those chips," Piper Sandler analyst Harsh Kumar told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" on Dec. 13, a day after Broadcom's earnings. "These chips are not meant for everybody."
While 2024 has been a breakout year for Broadcom — AI revenue increased 220% — the month of December has put it in record territory. The stock is up 45% for the month as of Monday's close, 16 percentage points better than its prior best month.
On the company's earnings call on Dec. 12, Tan told investors that Broadcom had doubled shipments of its XPUs to its three hyperscale providers. The most well known of the bunch is Google, which counts on the technology for its Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, used to train Apple's AI software released this year. The other two customers, according to analysts, are TikTok parent ByteDance and Meta.
Tan said that within about two years, companies could spend between $60 billion and $90 billion on XPUs.
"In 2027, we believe each of them plans to deploy 1 million XPU clusters across a single fabric," Tan said of the three hyperscale customers.
In addition to AI chips, AI server clusters need powerful networking parts to train the most advanced models. Networking chips for AI accounted for 76% of Broadcom's $4.5 billion of networking sales in the fourth quarter.
Broadcom said that, in total, about 40% of its $30.1 billion in 2024 semiconductor sales were related to AI, and that AI revenue would increase 65% in the first quarter to $3.8 billion.
"The degree of success amongst the hyperscalers in their initiatives here is clearly an area up for debate," Cantor analyst C.J. Muse, who recommends buying Broadcom shares, wrote in a report on Dec. 18. "But any way you slice it, the focus here will continue to be a meaningful boon for those levered to custom silicon."
Prior to 2024, Intel's worst year on the market was 1974, when the stock sank 57%.
The seeds for the company's latest stumbles were planted years ago, as Intel missed out on mobile chips to Qualcomm, ARM and Apple.
Rival AMD started taking market share in the critical PC and server CPU markets thanks to its productive manufacturing relationship with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Intel's manufacturing process has been a notch behind for years, leading to slower and less power-efficient central processing units, or CPUs.
But Intel's most costly whiff is in AI — and it's a big reason Gelsinger was removed.
Nvidia's GPUs, originally created for video games, have become the critical hardware in the development of power-hungry AI models. Intel's CPU, formerly the most important and expensive part in a server, has become an afterthought in an AI server. The GPUs Nvidia will ship in 2025 don't even need an Intel CPU — many of them are paired to an Nvidia-designed ARM-based chip.
As Nvidia has reported revenue growth of at least 94% for the past six quarters, Intel has been forced into downsizing mode. Sales have declined in nine of the past 11 periods. Intel announced in August that it was cutting 15,000 jobs, or about 15% of its workforce.
How do Bitcoin Ordinals work?
Bitcoin Ordinals assign a unique identifier number to the satoshis in any given bitcoin. Bitcoin developer Casey Rodarmor introduced the idea in 2023 and used a feature of Bitcoin’s 2021 Taproot upgrade, which allowed for data to be stored directly on the Bitcoin blockchain to make it happen.
Ordinals work by making each unit of a single bitcoin uniquely identifiable. When a bitcoin is mined, all one million satoshis are assigned a number in the order of their creation. Satoshis can be tracked individually across multiple wallets, meaning you can spend BTC and still keep track of individual satoshis or Ordinals.
"We are working to create a leaner, simpler, more agile Intel," board Chair Frank Yeary said in a Dec. 2 press release announcing Gelsinger's departure.
A big problem for Intel is that it lacks a comprehensive AI strategy. It's touted the AI capabilities on its laptop chips to investors, and released an Nvidia competitor called Gaudi 3. But neither the company's AI PC initiative nor its Gaudi chips have gained much traction in the market. Intel's Gaudi 3 sales missed the company's own $500 million target for this year.
Late next year, Intel will release a new AI chip that it codenamed Falcon Shores. It won't be built on Gaudi 3 architecture, and will instead be a GPU.
Whereas Ethereum NFTs sometimes require metadata to be stored off-chain, sometimes on a traditional web2 website, Bitcoin Ordinal data is all stored on-chain, reducing the risk of data loss. The SegWit and Taproot updates to the Bitcoin network allow for a lot of data to be stored in this manner.
Buying, selling, and trading Bitcoin Ordinals
To buy Bitcoin Ordinals, you’ll need to use a wallet that is compatible with Taproot addresses. Many of the most popular Bitcoin wallets, such as Trust Wallet, Mycelium, and Blockchain.com wallets, do not support this feature. You can use wallets like Sparrow Wallet instead.
"Is it going to be wonderful? No, but it is a good first step in getting the platform done," Intel interim co-CEO Michelle Holthaus said at a financial conference held by Barclays on Dec. 12.
Holthaus and fellow interim co-CEO David Zinsner have vowed to focus on Intel's products, leaving the fate of Intel's costly foundry division unclear.
Before he left, Gelsinger championed a strategy that involved Intel both finding its footing in the semiconductor market and manufacturing chips to compete with TSMC. In June, at a conference in Taipei, Gelsinger told CNBC that when its factories get up and running, Intel wanted to build "everybody's AI chips," and give companies such as Nvidia and Broadcom an alternative to TSMC.

Intel said in September that it plans to turn its foundry business into an independent unit with its own board and the potential to raise outside capital. But for now, Intel's primary client is Intel. The company said it didn't expect meaningful sales from external customers until 2027.
At the Barclays event this month, Zinsner said the separate board for the foundry business is "getting stood up today." More broadly, he indicated that the company is looking to remove complexity and associated costs wherever possible.
"We are going to constantly be scrutinizing where we're spending money, making sure that we're getting the appropriate return," Zinsner said.
Real-world examples and use cases
Bitcoin Ordinals can be used to represent the sale of digital or real-world assets, to act as a collectable piece of BTC network history, or to permanently inscribe data to an immutable blockchain as a form of censorship-resistant art, protest, or historic preservation.
At the moment, the main use case lies in artwork, much like with Ethereum NFTs. The market for Bitcoin Ordinals is relatively small, although not insignificant. Sales of BTC Ordinals reached over $170 million in March 2024.
Examples of Bitcoin Ordinals could include collecting ‘souvenirs’ from history, allowing users to own a piece of a bitcoin from a certain moment in time, such as a major world event or simply an interesting moment in Bitcoin’s mining history.
Potential Challenges and Downsides of Bitcoin Ordinals
Of course, we’ve already seen the market for Ethereum NFTs take a massive drop in recent years, with the value of NFT collectables falling around 90% overall. While the technology isn’t going anywhere, the market quickly became saturated with low-effort artwork, aggressive marketing practices, and shady or abusive trading tactics such as wash trading to artificially inflate auction prices.
It’s safe to say that the market has taken a step back from NFTs and that this muted sentiment may also carry over to Bitcoin Ordinals as well for the near future.
Another issue with Ordinals is one of privacy and surveillance. By allowing unique identifying data to be inscribed on individual millionths of every bitcoin, the fungibility and pseudonymous nature of Bitcoin is arguably threatened.
Ordinals allow for on-chain surveillance analysts to cluster wallets and identify Bitcoin users with greater ease, which some people may disagree with.
Finally, there’s potentially a risk of creating a derivatives market that could upset BTC prices. If Ordinals were to take off in a big way, there’s the possibility that users spending big money on specific millionths of a Bitcoin could have unforeseen effects on the price of Bitcoin and the health of the market, although this is merely speculation at the time of writing.
Whatever happens with Bitcoin Ordinals, the technology has been warmly welcomed by a great many cryptocurrency enthusiasts, and the market looks set to develop further over the coming months and years.

I'm not an EV enthusiast until I'm convinced which is exactly the way I am with everything and I'm sure most people are. I'm a real tech enthusiast though . What we've been offered so far and the prices we've been offered them at I've never made any sense to me. The battery technology has been woeful. What's coming along now coming along from China is clearly a game changer. The trend is there and the realization is there that it is really the best solution for most of us by a longshot and those that I’ve driven EV’s for a few years or more are extremely happy so that says a lot!
I think the first thing to be consolidated will be the car software, and possibly FSD. The car manufacturers that are looking at cutting cost are the same manufacturers that struggle with their software. For manufacturers with few in-house parts, the software requires integration with software included by suppliers, which means manufacturers have trouble sharing a supply chain if the cars don't use the same software. It's also easy to mess it up, I lost count on how many times VW switched between in-sourcing and out-sourcing their software.
The only two legacy auto firms that might have had a chance is Volvo (which is Chinese owned, so insulated somewhat) and Nissan/Renault. Nissan dropped the ball with the Leaf, had they done a proper refresh in 2018 rather than just ditching the two worst batteries and worst motor and new bodywork they wouldn't need to merge with Honda to survive. We would probably have a £20K Nissan Micra EV 3/4 years ago. Renault had a major hickup due to the Russian issue, but the Scenic and Renault 5 EV prove that they are on the right track if they can stay afloat
Tesla Q4 Deliveries Upcoming
The EV giant has said it expects "slight" vehicle delivery growth this year. But with the end of the fourth quarter fast approaching, Tesla finds itself looking for answers with unit sales lagging in the U.S. and Europe.
Tesla saw vehicle deliveries rise 38% to 1.81 million in 2023.
To top that in 2024, the EV giant needs 514,925 deliveries in Q4, far more than the Q4 2023 record of 484,507. Analyst consensus currently forecasts 498,000 vehicle deliveries in Q4 and 1.79 million for 2024, according to FactSet.
However, other estimates have Tesla's Q4 total coming in around 506,000 units.
Looking further out, CEO Elon Musk proclaimed on the Q3 earnings call that vehicle sales could grow "20%-30%" in 2025.
A note last week from Barclays estimated Tesla's total Q4 deliveries at 515,000 units. The analysts wrote this will keep the "stock's narrative momentum strong." However, the firm believes investor focus on Tesla's fundamentals is generally limited and that a light near-term volume miss "would likely do little to dampen" TSLA stock's rally, fueled by President-elect Donald Trump and optimism over autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence.

Initial building materials for construction began arriving on-site in March, ahead of Tesla gaining official approval for construction in early May. Bitcoin Ordinals are Bitcoin’s answer to NFTs, allowing a way of inscribing data onto a specific satoshi (one-millionth of a bitcoin) in a way that makes that satoshi distinct from others or non-fungible.
So why is this important?
Originally, Bitcoin was launched as a fungible form of digital cash. Like a US dollar, one is much the same as the other as far as the people transacting are concerned. However, Bitcoin Ordinals allow users to identify satoshis from one another.
For example, a collector might be interested in owning a satoshi from a crucial moment in Bitcoin’s history, like the Bitcoin halving that takes place every four years, and thus be willing to spend more than the market value of one satoshi to buy it.
This leads Bitcoin into the realm of digital collectables and NFTs. The Ethereum NFT (non-fungible token) market exploded in 2021, with over $24 billion in sales of NFTs. These NFTs are typically digital assets on the Ethereum network with unique identifying numbers and were used to represent ownership of assets like art and music.
Bitcoin Ordinals could be used for exactly the same thing, with the added benefit of being associated with the most popular and long-standing cryptocurrency on the market.
Ethereum‘s long-term outlook appears to be quite positive as ETH sees a wave of bullish predictions about a move to unprecedented heights in the ongoing market cycle.
According to data released by SWIFT, the use of the euro as a settlement currency for international payments has fallen significantly. Its utilization share has decreased by 6.83% compared to 2014, with only 22.29% of global payments employing it.
The future seems bleak for the euro, as its popularity as a settlement currency is waning in international markets. Recent data released by SWIFT, the de-facto standard messaging system for making international and interbank transactions, indicates that the euro is now the currency that has lost the most usage share in the last 10 years.
SWIFT numbers show that in 2014, the euro’s share reached close to 30%, accounting for almost a third of the payments made inside the system. However, only 22.29% included the euro, declining by nearly 7% in November.
Other fiat currencies also showed a decline in utilization, but none as large as the one experienced by the euro. In opposition, the dollar’s share has increased by 4.68% during the last decade. This might signal that the de-dollarization actions and calls from several non-western-aligned nations have not had the desired effect.
Nonetheless, some of the largest international players have been banned from using SWIFT, so the landscape depicted by this data might be incomplete. China and Russia, for example, are conducting most of their international trade in national currencies, and these volumes would not be included in this report.

Tesla (TSLA) vehicle insurance registrations in China rose sequentially last week, as demand in China continues to be a bright spot for the EV giant with analysts awaiting official fourth-quarter delivery data later this week. TSLA edged higher early Tuesday.
Tesla insurance registrations in China totaled 18,600 for the week of Dec. 23-Dec. 29, up about 5.7% from 17,600 the previous week, according to data compiled by CnEVPost. The fourth quarter ends and official delivery numbers are expected Thursday. Tesla registrations in China, a rough gauge for deliveries, are up 8.3% compared to last quarter and have increased 13.6% vs. a year ago.
Tesla's year-to-date China registrations, which lagged earlier this year, turned positive in the third quarter and are now up about 7.7% compared to the same time frame in 2023.
Tesla China has been a strength for the EV giant in Q4 while the company has experienced generally weaker EV demand in the U.S. and Europe.

The car manufacturers that are looking at cutting cost are the same manufacturers that struggle with their software. For manufacturers with few in-house parts, the software requires integration with software included by suppliers, which means manufacturers have trouble sharing a supply chain if the cars don't use the same software. It's also easy to mess it up, I lost count on how many times VW switched between in-sourcing and out-sourcing their software.

Tesla (TSLA) vehicle insurance registrations in China rose sequentially last week, as demand in China continues to be a bright spot for the EV giant with analysts awaiting official fourth-quarter delivery data later this week. TSLA edged higher early Tuesday.
Tesla insurance registrations in China totaled 18,600 for the week of Dec. 23-Dec. 29, up about 5.7% from 17,600 the previous week, according to data compiled by CnEVPost. The fourth quarter ends and official delivery numbers are expected Thursday. Tesla registrations in China, a rough gauge for deliveries, are up 8.3% compared to last quarter and have increased 13.6% vs. a year ago.

Tesla's year-to-date China registrations, which lagged earlier this year, turned positive in the third quarter and are now up about 7.7% compared to the same time frame in 2023.
Tesla China has been a strength for the EV giant in Q4 while the company has experienced generally weaker EV demand in the U.S. and Europe.
In separate China news, Tesla's Shanghai megapack factory has been completed after seven months and has begun trial production, according to state media. Mass production will start in early 2025. The plant will package batteries from CATL, BYD (BYDDF) and others for Tesla Energy's storage products.

Happy New Year's Forky. I'm still thinking through about what you said about your HIVE node and the amount of data. That makes sense though since it is text data.
Text is very compressible... if very repetitive, then it becomes almost a zero problem.
Currently blocks get compressed by itself...
I am not saying this will be a feature, but on storage technology, there are technologies advancements called similarity and deduplication. Once these get implemented on top of decentralized technologies like blockchains, these problems disappear.
Will take some time for this to be "standard" but eventually it will come because the hardware will enable it enough.
