Weekend-engagement topic week 44: See || Hear || Feel - Win HIVE

in Weekend Experiences3 years ago

Where would you be without the ability to see, hear or touch...How would your life differ from the one you live now? For me it's a frightening thought as all three allow me to experience life, interact and record the priceless memories; Like for most others my life would be dramatically different and much less enjoyable so I'm glad I have them.

But what if I had to lose one of them, by choice - Which would I choose and why? This, for me, is a very difficult question as all three work together to offer me a more fulfilled life and removing one would change everything. I'd adapt of course, humans have a remarkable way of doing so, but it would still be a very difficult thing to accept.

Welcome to the weekend-engagement topic for week 44!

For those who may not be familiar with the concept all you have to do is respond to the topic below in the comments of this post. It'll be cool if you stay around and engage with some of the others too - That's the purpose of the concept to be honest - Engagement.

On Monday I'll have a bunch of hive to transfer to some of you who engage below, just for your commenting and engagement. It's pretty easy right? It's not a competition, just a chance to get engaged with a few other hivers and have some fun.

Weekend-engagement topic week 44

SEEING - HEARING - FEELING

dazz (1).png

In the comments below tell us which sense you would choose to lose, if you had to lose one. You can choose out of sight, hearing or touch - Make sure you explain your answer to us, your reasons why you chose as you did. There's no wrong answers, just your answer, so have a think about it and let us know which of those three senses you would give up if you had to, and why. eye image src

Read this bit so you know what to do, and what not to do. ☝️

That's the topic for this week folks. You have until very late Sunday night your time to get your response in and I hope you'll engage with it this week as it'll be good to see you around over the weekend. If not then have a great weekend anyway. I'll see you around.

Design and create your ideal life, don't live it by default - Tomorrow isn't promised so be humble and kind

My Friday track, just because.

Sort:

WHAT?!?! What a way to start the weekend 😖
I mean, where does one even begin???
First of all, I’m not giving up my sight, I love photography/videos and all that way too much. Visuals are important to me.
That leaves touch and hearing, which is still a terrible choice.
I’m going to lean towards losing touch, because I can’t imagine being at a party or a family gathering and not being able to hear the jokes, the music, the laughter.

But losing touch, I mean how does that work, can I still click my camera? How does sex even work without feeling anything? Can still shoot a basketball?!?!? Hahahah no man, this is a hard one. I was not ready for this! 😖😖😖
But if I’m absolutely forced to, I mean there is no other way, peoples lives are on the line, baby seals are counting on me to keep them safe, cuddly panda bears are looking at me, puppies are wagging their tails, then yes, fine…sigh….I would have to choose to lose touch.... 😌

Hi. This is my first time on THE WEEKEND. If I were forced to give up one, the person forcing me to give up one sense would have to choose as it would be too difficult for me.
Giving away one sense for any reason does’nt appear very sensible. As you rightly said sight is too important to just give it away like that. The ability to hear 👂 is pretty up there in the ranking as well. And touch is so important in giving and receiving affection. I would never make that choice ...but ...if I absolutely had no choice then in the end, I’d probably choose to give up my sense of touch as well.😎

First timer, huh???

Awesome to have you here man 😎

Whoa! another vote for touch huh? it's true, the choice is a difficult one for sure but that ripple of electricity when touching that special person. Holding my baby Daughters as new-borns, hard to give that up

But yeah, like ya say, none of the options can be decided on quickly or with certainty. If you come back next weekend and take part in your second weekend engagement topic, I think Galen may give us all our senses back again 😂

!ENGAGE 15

Oh no!!! I should have read this comment before making my choice! Actually edesde from where we look at it it's a tough choice. We have been brought a difficult decision this weekend.

I know right! However we choose we lose.

A beautiful Sunrise or smile from a loved one - Sight is the wrong choice.
A kind, comforting word when we need it or a beautiful song - Hearing is the wrong choice.
A hug when you feel down - Touch is the wrong choice.

Oh come on!!! 😂

🤣🤣 En realidad es así, no hay elección correcta.

I like the idea of @galenkp holding a magic wand or maybe a boomerang to give people back their lost ability. I agree the choice is difficult: > Holding my baby Daughters as new-borns, hard to give that up These are some good reason to stay with touch in your skillset.

My friend. That is absolutely the heartbreaking kind of thing I just could not give up. Touch could play a big part in making up for one or the other senses.

As for the idea of G-dog giving us back our senses at the end of the weekend, I don't care if it's a wand or a boomerang...

As long as he is wearing a pink, frilly, sparkly fairy dress with matching crown

Oh damn I would pay good money to see that!😂

You and me both, my friend 🤣

Anyways, I have seen people giving touch away without considering that without touch you can hurt yourself and lose the ability to feel it. And that means a lot of trouble. Even getting sick would be tricky. Imagine going to a doctor because you look ill and telling this person you don't feel anything 😅

Welcome @bearmol. You'll love it here. I'm fairly new and believe me, I look forward to the WEEKEND. Right now I’m still trying to figure out which sense I’d lose. Good luck on losing your sense of touch. Lol!

Not only that but I can always count on Galen notifying me when it's Friday. When I see the topic in my feed, 'Friday!' And this, I can just drop comments at random, some looo0OOong ones and some not so long.

Haha!!You’re right. A great way to ring in FriYAY. I love the little thrill of anticipating “the next topic”. I won’t comment on your not so short comments. Oops! I meant your sometimes loooong, sometimes not so long comments. 😜untitled.gif

Thanks for telling me about this community @fruityfruitz

No prob man. You probably just need to reconsider losing that sense of touch. 😂😂

Welcome man! These are the fun/ philosophical questions @galenkp asks on a Friday 😂.

Affection is important, but I just the the communication part of hearing and seeing (body language) plays to big of roll.

On the other hand, does losing the sense of touch also mean losing taste? Cause technically your taste buds use that touch right? I have all these questions! 🤣

Jeez! Stop trying to take even more of our senses away dude!!! 😂🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️😂

!ENGAGE 15

Thank God @galenkp did not throw smell in the mix...

I mean how would you know if..?

untitled.gif

Juss' Sayin'

Lol this could actually be a bonus in my house, lol we regularly stink each other out of the room so I wouldn't mind losing that so much in that regard hahaha

Haha my God, how terrible, losing your sense of smell would be great for you then haha.

I am really wishing He @galenkp would have given us another option also.

As the three to chose would all render me unable to do what pays my mortgage. (survival)

untitled.gif

Very funny! 😂 I think losing sense of smell is a good thing! Some farts are like an aroma 🚶‍♀️

But it is only sight, hearing and feeling...

Seems like an impossible choice to me right now.

untitled.gif

But then we would have to consider hearing as well. Some can be loud. I don't want to hear it either. 😂😂

Hahah her pleased face gets me. Some think it's weird but the wife and I don't share in the ass ripping behaviors when we are in the same room. I've had previous relationships where it went down and it was a little gross for my tastes, sometimes literally.

This girl was over the top on that shart though hahaha

😂😂I agree @stevenwood. Let's leave the other senses alone.

Mmhmmm! As if we haven't suffered enough already, making this difficult and traumatic choice! Galen hates us this week!!! 😂

😂 We don’t want to think about giving up anything else. I finally decided on giving up hearing. Just woke up and first checked to make sure I can hear.
Whew! untitled.gif

Hahha fine, we'll keep taste... But it is something to think about!

It is. 😃

Thanks for the welcome 🙏. Interesting questions to propel us to think about the importance of each sense. Making it even harder to choose to lose a sense.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

😆Please don't go there @gvkanten. The decision is tough enough. We're not bringing loss of taste into this unless it's a "timed" one where we give up a sense for just a minute. I wouldn't do it on "The Weekend' either. Not even for a minute. 😂😂

Hhahah no wait hear me out! Technically we might lose taste but... but!!! wouldn't that make it a lot easier for us to live healthy? I mean, no more fatting, sugary stuff, we'd just be happy with the nutrients we need... What do you think?

Haha!! I like your take on it but I feel like I'd be the one to eat them still. I'd probably have lots of ice-cream to see how many cones could bring my sense of taste back. 😂untitled.gif

I think I eat with my eyes too though... It's like I see it... I want it!

Maybe I should've given up sight!

Ah! You too chose the sense of touch? So you would give up receiving and giving affection? Woow, that's costly 😄

@kemmyb 😀lol. I agree it would be costly. As I said, Of course I’m only choosing under duress. In a real sense it would be hard to choose to give up one of my senses as it would be kind of ”senseless”. But if I had no choice then touch would be it. Not because it’s not important but the other senses are of greater importance to survive comfortably in our world.

I understand your choice but still, I believe touch is important. Then you can feel things. It's what makes us humans - we FEEL.

If we lose the sense of touch, it will be rough! 😄

Receiving and giving affection is a beautiful thing, but remember it works differently for some people. Affection is can be felt in the warmth of a gaze or in the softness of a voice, in the little things you do for someone. As a person who has traits of the autism spectrum I know about lots of people that don't understand the purpose of touch, kiss and hug and still show great level of affection.

Hi @brutalisti, you say -

... I know about lots of people that don't understand the purpose of touch, kiss and hug and still show great level of affection.

This response is enlightening for me. I'm curious, how do they show this affection? Like, do they understand their 'actions' of affection? I don't know if you understand what I am trying to ask.

Of course they do, They just express it in different individual manner, that often can be invisible for most people. Imagine you are dating a boy on the spectrum, so you understand it more personal. He can show you affection by sending you an e-mail with the exact names of people, the place and the time of a surprise birthday party, some friend are secretly preparing for you. He can reorder the colors in your make up box, he can watch at you finger tips in a romantic moment. He may panic if you gently brush his skin, but he may love experience skin pressure that is painful for people with low pain tolerance. It is always different and need attention and love to find it. It is like talking different language. Good thing is he can learn your language and you can learn his, still it is not an easy task.

I see you went with the sense of touch as well @bearmol
In this case, it seems the majority are making that pick with prior reasons.

Yeah @zanoz I’m sticking with my choice. Even though the opposition appears to have made some valid points, the negative effects of not being able to see or hear far outway the effects of losing our sense of touch.

Yes you do have a point and I am sticking with mine too lol

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Welcome to the weekend @bearmol, it's a very cool engagement group and if you read some of the previous weekend posts, you'll definitely get a few (or more) chuckles out of the responses. Have a good weekend ☺️

Thanks @andrastia. Looking forward to many more chuckles 😃. Have a great weekend.

Oh yes, there will be many more fo' sho'
Enjoy it bud :)

Welcome to the weekend community! This is one of the more serious topics but it's still a lot of fun! There's so many awesome people here, you'll have no troubles finding something to talk about!

Thank you @cmplxty. I’m glad I have my eyesight so I can read your kind welcome message.

Sex without touch? Not legit!

Yeah, it's a tough one right? I want to make people think about it. I mean life would be so dramatically different without one one of these three senses. Such a tough decision right? I'm really interested to see what people choose and their reasons why though!

Thanks for coming along. First cab off the rank again too.

!ENGAGE 50

Hahah this was main concern for some reason, I mean technically it would be possible to have sex but if we had no senses, nothing would 'work' 😂...
It's an interesting topic indeed, also in terms of appreciating what you have and not taking it for granted.

You might have scared / scarred a few people with this one though, it gets scary :).

Also what's your final choice? Are you planning a @krazzytrukker style reveal later?

This is why touch would not be my choice...

I'm thinking I'll do a post in the WEEKEND community to discuss the topic and reveal my choice and I'll link the topic post to give it some more exposure too.

Interesting! I'll keep an eye out

Keeping both eyes out...

untitled.gif

Looking forward to it. 😃I'm still thinking which one to give up. Good thing I'm not in a queue. The people behind me would have lost their patience and probably would have shown me how well their sense of touch works. 😆

Lol...This is funny! 🤣

Clearly you're not behind me in the queue. 😂😂

@gvkanten says KrazzyTrukker style reveal G-Dog.!!

Git er done son...

Make it...

H U G E..!

untitled.gif

Nothing could be as huge as a KrazzyTrukker reveal...

Also, I'd fucking smash that burger and side of fries you know. All of it.

I just gotta figure out what one of the three I could do without.

Gonna take a good nights rest to figure this one out...

ZZZzzz,,,...

... baby seals are counting on me to keep them safe, cuddly panda bears are looking at me, puppies are wagging their tails,..

Really? 😂 I read your comment and I'm smiling here. Pretty hard choice to make eh? But why lose touch? Beyond feeling your camera or sex, touch is everything!

To me, it's like a person is dead without the sense of touch. Touch connects us to the world around us. Even when pricked with a pin, you may not feel it. 🤔 Now I'm thinking, losing sense of touch, does it mean no pain?

Hahaha I mean it has to count for something! Baby seals count!

I mean there are arguments to keep touch, I'm not saying it's not worth it. But music? Hearing your children laugh while they're playing? Jokes? Nature sounds? Birds? Waves splashing... To go on without hearing all that would be hard....

And yes, according to my theory no pain, at least not by touching something (see what I did there 🤣).

And also but this is debateable, does no touch mean no taste?

I'm 100% with you! I was starting to think I was crazy for choosing touch, but my reasons are the same as yours!

Haha i want to break out the old... "great minds think alike" here!

No feeling at all I would think, no hot or cold sensations, no clue if you burned yourself, or froze your toes because you went for a walk in snow barefoot.

Ah yes but luckily we'd have our previous experience to teach us no to walk barefoot in the snow. And I'm sure we can come up with some kind of biometric scan?

How does sex even work without feeling anything?

Probably like this:

Haha the Demolition Man! Classic!
That settles it, we can say goodbye to touch in that case 😂

Social distancing seemed rather ridiculous back then didn't it? Did anyone ever figure out what the freakin' seashells were for???

Did anyone ever figure out what the freakin' seashells were for???

I think that they are only useful for this:

0:53

Hahaha had a great laugh at this! Totally brightened up the weekend even more.

Hahahha, I get your point @gvkanten and it's funny I just read your entry after submitting mine already I too would choose to lose touch.
I know its the hardest decision to make but it seems better than the other two to me.

Hahahha, I get your point @gvkanten and it's funny I just read your entry after submitting mine already I too would choose to lose touch.
I know its the hardest decision to make but it seems better than the other two to me.

Wow, losing the sense of touch, a very difficult choice.

How does sex even work without feeling anything?

Soon as you said you'd choose touch that's what I thought. And I also thought you'd like to know all those puppies stopped wagging their tails and pissed on the carpet when you chose touch.

A yes, but @fieryfootprints already suggested the demolition man solution for sex...

And how dare you bring the puppies into this!!!
At least, we'd see the piss on the carpet and hear them happily running around 😂

L.. O.. L.

Dude that's funny. It was two days ago I left that comment so I didn't know what I said. Reading it again just now is funny!

Happy Sunday!

Always thinking of the seals and the basketball, and occasionally of basketball playing baby seals.

It's not an easy topic this week , is it???

I think G-dog woke up with a headache or something and thought, OK! I'll show them...🤷‍♂️😎

hahah that's how my mind works!
Baby seals are living in there rent free, ready to come out when needed.

Indeed, this one is a headscratcher, but I seems like a lot of engagement so I think we've all thought about this at some point

Wow! Rent-free... At least I charge the chimps in my head 3 peanuts each week.

Yup I imagine many people started to read the topic and think: "I can't choose!!!" After some thought and engagement I think people start to consider different reasons for each of our senses and form a solid ish decision. Still not a choice I'd ever want to really make though.

I agree I also go with losing sense of touch! As for how does sex work? lol well at least you can still GIVE it and see/hear your partner haha that should still give us a sense of fulfillment I'd imagine :P

haha okay i'm gonna give you some kudos for the selfless answer! You could still GIVE! (not all though, because not everything would 'work).

But check out the demolition man solution above! Virtual sex!

Hahaha yes there's absolutely a work-around to everything! 😂

The baby seals and cuddly bears won me over on this comment 😄

Did they help with your decision??? 😃

Lol yes hahaha

HAHAH I also chose to stop feeling and the first thing I thought was oh no, sex :( :( :( hahahahahaha but well, that's not all in life ... 😢😂

Hahahah I know right, I panicked a but at the thought.. But don't be afraid!!! Sex is still on the table! Check the "Demolition Man' solution in the comments above.

A difficult choice, to lose the sense of touch, how to give a hug and not feel it, how to shake hands and not feel their warmth and even more how to make love and not feel anything at all! A very difficult choice!

I know it's hard, but if we look at the current situation we're already kind of going that direction no? With all the social distancing and video calls?
Sad thought I know, but we've made it so far

Difficult but not such a difficult choice. I have to keep my sense of touch. 😂

😂 yes , it's touch Sense it's important

It is. 😃

A hard choice indeed, I chose to keep touch, and lose hearing. Hearing can be replaced by notes and reading, but touch? what can replace it?

I don't think any of these can be fully replaced, music, laughter, video calls are all going to be hard without hearing too..

Maybe virtual reality helps soften the blow in terms of touch? Like those VR sets that make you think/feel like you're in a roller coaster...

Technology is closer to hearing replacement than to any other sense, It, (technology), will have a difficult time replacing any sense fully, but there is the ability today to replace hearing via text, yes you will still be deaf, you will not get to hear the soft gurgles of a baby, or the sound of a song bird, but I have heard they are making pretty good progress on actually, from a google search for hearing replacing via bones

Bone-anchored hearing systems, also called BAHAs, are surgically implanted devices. They're typically used for people who have hearing loss in one ear, or who have outer ear or ear canal malformations, such as microtia. Surgery involves implanting a small metal device into the mastoid bone behind the ear.

I chose hearing too. Nothing can replace touch.

Oh, you don't want to lose touch, do you?

You can somewhat overcome losing your sense of smell, sight, taste, or hearing. But if you lose your sense of touch, you wouldn't be able to sit up or walk. You wouldn't be able to feel pain,

No bueno.

This question is difficult, but losing touch is not an option for me. And how would the hugs be given? Well although in these times of pandemic no one embraces

At least we can greet elbow to elbow and feel it during the pandemic.

Yes. Side by side. But nothing like hugging and feeling the warmth of the other person.

I totally agree. 😃

Hahah I had the same thing go through my head, the one up top of course lol. Sex would be brutal without a sense of touch! It would be one of the things we sacrifice though in order to continue living well! We could adapt but we better still have an internal sense of feeling!

I certainly couldn’t snowboard anymore without a sense of touch, feeling the chances in terrain with my feet is crucial!

hahaha nice save! I saw what you did there!

Maybe I've seen one to many series (e.g. the walking dead) but I'd feel so helpless without hearing. Like anything could happen around you and you wouldn't really know it.
....and I haven't seen a comment hear saying they could lose sight so that's obviously off the table 👀

Loosing touch also means you are prone to injure yourself and not being able to notice it. So it's a very dangerous thing to loose on itself.

As a gamer that's is pretty easy for me. When I have a hard to imagine problem, I love to make associations with games, as the world we live in is hard to distinguish from complex simulated reality even for the scientific society.

Some of the most enjoyable games I have played put me in the skin of a character that communicates pretty well with other players or non-player characters. That character can experience and manipulate his world pretty well. He can see, he can hear ànd except for some experimental games, he is missing his sense of touch. Expiriencing the tactile (a word I know and have never used, before I saw it in @manoldochev 'reply) property of the material world is in fact not only pleasurable, but also life-saving ability. We can really miss important sensory signals until, as Moni said, it is too late. Luckily, games have resolved this problem with something as simple as health/life bar. I can easily imagine having sensors that transfer heat, humidity, sharpness or other properties via augmented reality device to my hearing and vision.

Having said that I instantly thought: Can we also transfer vision and hearing signals to our sense of touch. It is actually done. People with impaired hearing experience music and even dance by feeling amplified vibrations. I have also read a book where they described an amusing experiment. They used cameras and a device attached to a blind man's back. The device was making pressure with different intensity on a low resolution square map on his back skin, that represents the light and dark object's in front him. After months of training the man aquaired a sense similar of low resolution b/w vision which let him "see" walls, doors, stairs and big objects.

And if we take "touch" in a broader definition like being a ghost... That would change one's life and definition of life completely. Still, maybe we all have dreamed to walk through walls 😁. Here I really can't imagine how I would feel...

After all said I will definitely conclude I would sacrifice the sence of touch and rely on technology to survive.

Ah! The use of technology to solve all our problems! We are definitely moving into the future.

But really, can technology truly replace the sense of touch? Yes, in the world of games, there are sensors that transfer heat, humidity, and other things through augmented reality device. Can this also work in tune with our bodies? I doubt it. 😁

Very interesting point of view. Science supported by technology has great advances and what you say is simply fantastic!

Remember that Smurfs-inspired movie where a man lost his ability to walk and they gave him an avatar? That kind of survival and sensory experience is not that impossible anymore, is it?

You said you liked sci-fi. And something in this conversation...I think it's the virtual life topic...reminded me of one of my most favorite series of written fiction — A Requiem for Homo Sapiens by David Zindell. A trilogy sequel to his Neverness. You will enjoy a lot of the concepts in there, I am pretty sure. There was even this practice of generating heat to warm one's body by mental control over the processes in one's body — the thing you wrote about yesterday. And a lot of real Earth mythology and philosophy translated many thousands or was it millions of years into the future.

Danlo had three items with him only — his father's pilot ring now his own, his spaceship capable of reaching the farthest places in the universe, and a flute of sorts.

It's an interesting question I htink as no matter what sense one gives up there will be loss of some kind. I can see you've thought it through and who knows, maybe technology will advance to the point where touch is replaceable.

A good thing you don't have to lose any though, it's hypothetical.

!ENGAGE 25

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

I think of all the senses to lose hearing would be the easiest to replace via technology. Touch/feeling involves far to much and covers a far wider range than either seeing or hearing, just my opinion. Hearing would be the simplest to replace even if it is with notes and paper only and you needed an escort with you at all time to be your warning ears. You wear a heads up display, your escort talks and his words appear on your HUD.

That's a good notion here and one that I didn't think of. It makes sense to use technology to augment what we have in order to achieve what is missing. I too chose touch as the sacrifice here!
I know what you mean by gaming and relating it to things haha. I've come across many a situation where I think that something is familiar about it from a gaming perspective like an object on the ground being in a particular spot and it might be important or something. Fun things to reminisce about!

Wow that's a very thought provoking question...

As an outdoorsman I don't think I could let go of my sense of sight or hearing. To not be able to see and hear the beautiful sights and sounds of the forest... I can't even imagine!

As a father and family man, do not be able to hear my daughter's angelic voice or see her grow up would be something I couldn't live with!

With losing the sense of touch, I think I could still perform all my daily activities properly. I mean sure, I would not be able to feel the embrace of my loved ones... but at least they can still feel mine... I think i could sacrifice losing my own enjoyment of receiving the feeling of touch as long as I can still give it.

I believe I could still be more useful to my family and society by losing touch while retaining the sense of sight & sound vs. losing either of the two latter.

Not saying that someone couldn't be "useful" if they can't see or hear AT ALL and I hope noone interprets it as that, all I'm saying is that for MY personal duties/activities that I think I PERSONALLY would not be as effective.

So yeah, I guess I'd go with losing my sense of touch! :)

Hey welcome to your second day on the blockchain @outdoorsanon. You picked a nice community to hang out with, this is a great way to meet people. I've been here quite awhile and it's safe to say this is one of my favorite times and I don't miss'em.

Weldome to Hive. 2 days and 4 articles is pretty ambitious. Keep it up!

@dandays thanks for the warm welcome! Yup I’m brand new here, had a buddy invite me and tell me about the hive and I was intrigued so thought I’d give it a shot! Still learning the site and the functions etc but I always try to be as engaged as possible :). I’m a content creator on other media outlets so respinning and resharing some on here isn’t too difficult hehe

Then you're gonna fit right in. I've been here going on four years and still learning all the functions. Let me know if you need any help. I don't know everything but I'll teach you everything I know.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Welcome!

Very kind of you, thanks a lot!

Four years! You are like one of the masters of this place then. 😄 Such wealth of knowledge....

Says KemmyB who's been here four months yet so smooth I thought she's been here longer than me shooooooot!

:insert TI gif:

Welcome to hive! It is awesome that you are new here and chose to check out such a vibrant community. Perfect timing for the topic here!

I agree with you on this one! I couldn't imagine not being able to hear our sons voice, or my wife's. Then not being able to see them and all of the things we do, take advantage of and enjoy together would be tough. Touch is a worthy sacrifice to be able to enjoy all of the other stuff for me!

@cmplxty Thank you for the warm welcome! Absolutely, I guess dad's have similar thinking haha :)

Interesting. I'd be lost without my trigger finger and so touch is something I need. Of course, for other things too.

It's a really difficult question I think and I wasn't sure it was going to work setting it as a topic but it seems to be going ok. I think it would be a great conversation to have with a group of people - So many different opinions and perspectives.

First time joining in for you this week. I hope you'll come back.

!ENGAGE 25

I'll be back for sure, weekends is when I'd have the most time to kick around on here so this weekend topic thing is perfect lol!

Yeah it's a great topic, good conversation starter. It's very much based on personal perspective so no answer is wrong and no logic/reason behind each person's answer is good or bad - I like how you can peer into the personality of the people by the answers & logic they put behind it.

Use the #weekend-engagement topic to open relationships. Engage here and then go over to the posts of those you've engaged with. Build and nurture relationships and you'll be on track for a great time.

Sounds good thanks for the tips!

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Thank you! :D

At least you didn't put a 150 word limit on this, cause I feel like I might have to wander around a bit before I answer.

It can't be sight. I actually have a really good idea what that is worth to me, having come close to not having it a time or two.

Touch or hearing?

I think a bit of that comes down to giving it up now or starting with out. I'm a really tactile person, I really am a hands on type. I seriously can't imagine not being able to feel.

I can imagine not hearing. It would be hard, but not impossible. Starting without it would mean I'd already solved the communication thing, and worked on finding alternate ways to be aware of my surroundings. There would be the advantage of having a service dog with me all the time.

I've known some deaf people over the years, and all of them got along pretty well in the world. I did work with a guy that was totally deaf from birth, and he did quite well. For people like me that didn't know American Sign he carried a pad and pencil all the time. His wife was also deaf from birth, and they had a normal hearing child. That was interesting, but even in the early 70s it was pretty easy to overcome.

He did have one problem. He broke the tach cable on his Triumph on the way to work one morning. He had me look at it and show him how to fix it. That night when he went to leave he over revved it and did an ugly wheelie that dumped him and the bike in the parking lot :)

True story. He played football at Michigan State University and loved to go to Hockey games with us.

So mark me down for hearing.

Hmm, good logic here, the process of elimination and for sure coming close to losing vision is always going to motivate one to want to keep it. Glad you did.

Hearing...Hmm, sounds legit and for good reason. IT's interesting though right? The hypothetical situation. I think it's fascinating to see people's reasons and what they ultimately choose.

!ENGAGE 25

Yeah coming close to losing ones vision is definitely a way to motivate you to keep it lol

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Thank you! Welcome to the group of 'hearing'. 😄 I chose the same thing too. I believe losing sense of hearing is easier to manage than lose other sense, especially touch. Why would I give up my ability to touch?

Being deaf can be managed with hearing aids, a service dog like you said, reading lips, sign language etc. Even if these were unavailable, our bodies will find a way to compensate for the lose.

I think losing sense of hearing should win the day.

Excellent reasoning Tom and you have Sam who would alert you to anything untoward, not sure how feely touchy he is, Woody knocks my arm constantly if wanting to alert me to someone on the driveway, or when it's time for food or a walk.

!ENGAGE 20

That was a fun read. This is one of those ones I can't risk jynxing myself by answering. New tach, can't hear.. recipe for a wheel stand for sure.

I'm with you on the hearing loss part. It would be the simplest to replace with technology. Google style glasses with a heads up display, voice to text translation, (heck you would even care if they were speaking Mandarin Chinese), visual clues to other sounds like foot steps approaching from behind, your heads up triangulating where the gunshots are coming from so you know where not to go, little bird icons with tweet tweet, to let you know he robins are rock-in it out, little cat faces popping up by a food bowl meowing feed me feed me.

Hearing would be the easiest to replace via technology that we have today, the bonus of no hearing is you can sleep through all the noise all the others complain about.

!ENGAGE 15

I can understand what you mean when you choose hearing over others. Being tactile is so important for me but in my early days here with our son and wife, I don't know if I could do without hearing! Thankfully I don't think I have a bitch nagging wife or whiny kids so hearing is important hahaha.

That's cool that the guy who was born deaf got married and had a normal hearing kid. You don't always think of those types of things with disabled people, them doing the normal things like getting married and stuff.

Interesting!
Can't knock the logic here. I was looking forward to your comment to see if you'd go for hearing or touch and for some reason I had already pictured the reasoning would involve a motorcycle 😀

Very well thought out reasoning...

That does it!

@bigtom13 is an alien or android posing as a biker.!

untitled.gif

No touchy-touchy then.

Does that mean I have no tactile senses or am I banned from touching the physical world as a ghost would be? Perception from a distance and communication with others is still too important. Tactile stuff is more egoistic and kind of something I can imagine I would be able to adapt to although that would change my behavior greatly.

In any case, such disabilities make you dependent on others. But living in civilization, I would stick to communicative stuff.

Were it a lone-wolf survival situation, though, I'd rather be manipulating thingies. I'd want my handses out of my pocketses. Manipulating thingies without the sense of touch — same as in computer games which include exploring the environment. Nothing tactile in the virtual world, yet, anyway. And we're kind of more used to it than we know, perhaps.

Tactile means skin, too, not just fingertips. I wouldn't know if I'm cold or hot, sunburned or wet, wind-beaten, etc...until too late and consequences come to the entire body. Sucks...

Banned from touching anything at all, though, then I'd not want that were i on my own more often than not. Hearing would have to go. Same as being in those games with speakers turned off, no? Beasties get you easier from the behinds but still...

A well thought out answer and the survivalist in me like the angle you too with the touch aspect.

I'm really keen to see what answers people come up with and why, their thought process, as with you here.

Great answer!

!ENGAGE 25

I guess I always consider that surviving in the wild thing...a thing. Such scenarios are always present in my head.

Even starting a fire with no matches or lighters is such a challenge...

Anyway, hunters need their sight unless they can echo locate or something. Smell is important to animals but it can't keep you away from rocks and holes, and wires...

I am drifting to another territory such as what would the one thing be if I could have only one item produced by civilization. A blanket? A fishing line? A lighter? A crowbar?

Hmm, now you're raising interesting questions...What one man-made item would you choose in a survival situation? There's so many options...I may do this for a topic!

This would be easier... than what you offering this week, all wrong...

Swiss Army Knife LOL a tool for every job required.... hopefully!

No avoiding the question now! 😉

Wicked! Kick-starting the broomstick....

Yes, @manoldonchev, you were one of the first people that I have interacted with when I first came to Hive. I liked your ideas back then and I still find them interesting.
@galenkp, I'd love to see a topic related to survival.
Hugs to both!

Thanks @regenerette let's see what the future topics hold...Maybe there might be a survival-related one.

I am drifting to another territory such as what would the one thing be if I could have only one item produced by civilization. A blanket? A fishing line? A lighter? A crowbar?

As a technology and sci-fi lover I questioning myself why people tend to chose items invented hundreds of years ago like knife, bow, blanket. I am always thinking - a cybertruck, Water Desalinator and cleaner, high tech body suit aka iron-man suit :D

Affordable, easy-to-find, light and easy to carry, basic-need-taking-care-of, etc.?

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

"Tactile means skin, too, not just fingertips. I wouldn't know if I'm cold or hot, sunburned or wet, wind-beaten, etc...until too late and consequences come to the entire body. Sucks..." - Hmm, I didn't actually think of that. I was thinking only of fingertip touches...

Well, it's both touching and being touch. People can touch each other bottom to bottom, for example. Belly to belly. Cheek to cheek. Elbow to chin. Who am I to judge?

The more I read these hearing choices the more I think I'm in that group. Not being able to touch is terrifying and I don't think losing my sight is quite as scary. I couldn't imagine not being able to touch.

Someone else was just saying they'd choose silence over darkness. Well said.

I guess I am currently attached to my "intellectual" senses and I would play the sentient ghost if others or tech could implement ideas that I have, etc.

I'm also in that group!

That's about as close as I can get to answering the question @regenerette. <-- Killin it on the leaderboards btw. I'm too fearful if I actually answered it I'd jynx myself and wake up tomorrow like 'I knew I shouldn't have answered that question!'

I've been killing it today because I had to stop a guy who's after me for more than 1 week....He almost put me down today, but I am a lioness...and he's paid to say shit around and voted:

Want me to add him to the shitlist then or?

Can effectively begin blockchain warfare if that is what you wish.

I'm not gonna lie. I could've continued the remainder of my blockchain days having not just read an entire blog with a packed comments section that's remarkably similar to a buncha drunk dials.

I didn't get into the history of whatever did or didn't happen and who didn't ask/answer something but I, personally, recognize your engagement and activity around here in less than a month—impressive. Whatever drama ya'all got goin on or him, them, you, whoever.... there's more important things to focus on.

This probably isn't the response you were looking for but I've never involved myself with internet drama, I wouldn't know where to start

Thank you for your words. Just before I go to sleep....it means a lot.
Yes, during this month I tried to do as much as I could. But I know I can do much more here, such as bringing my people from my groups on Quora, Empire Kred, and FB, but also people from minds, that I keep in contact with for a few years. At some point, I want to create a group for my Udemy students as well...I need more force for all...
Have a good night, @dandays, and thank you for being close!

Hearing can be replaced and actually improved upon via technology better than feeling or touch. Modern survival, it is difficult to triangulate where the gunshot emanated from, glasses with HUD and almost instant triangulation. People speaking a language you do not understand and they are looking in your direction thinking you are an easy mark because of your hearing difficulties, no problem instant voice to text translation and you can read what they are saying, any language that is installed.

Out in the woods pretty much the same thing, is it a bear, a cougar or just a rabbit that made that noise? In time would the sound tech be able to determine that? Can people in a city know what made that sound in that woods?

Touch is to important to lose.

It's also quite difficult to imagine. We all know silence and darkness but...the sense after I wake up in a tent with my arm senseless for a while because it has spent hours beneath my body — that's quite weird.

Interesting answer here. I like how it changes from the start to the end. It's definitely dependent on the situation. Survival, all three of these are crucial to have but they also depends on the place you are living in. I think if one doesn't have tactile input then you would come up with a system to know when you need to get out of the sun, water and other things. Would be very challenging and potentially deadly to perfect that type of system though lol

Aye, people are actually adaptive and they have various systems depending on their disabilities. Compensatory mechanisms. Remember Memento? Lol, that is the same as Memento Memento?

Hello weekenders. Gosh Galen this is such a deep one, it made me sad.

I simply cannot handle the thought of not waking up in the morning to my bright eyed, scraggly curled daughter gleaming at me with wonder for a new day. It would break my heart to not hear the giggles and belly laughs coming from the garden as my husband chases her around the lawn in a game of tag. There would be a massive void in my life to not have the warm cuddle hugs from my two favourite people in the world. So I am disqualifying myself here as yes we can adapt without one of our senses, but I am going to share my gratitude for making me appreciate these senses that I have.

If I absolutely had to choose one, it would probably be my hearing as you can still learn to lip read and sign, interpret things to a large degree from your other senses which would become heightened as a result and you can still "feel" music through vibration. But the world would be a less bright for me 😢

I'll be dedicating some time this weekend to experimenting with losing one of these at a time and see how it feels.

Enjoy your weekend everyone 🌸💚

It's such a difficult choice and we even when hypothetical! Imagine having to make it in reality? So difficult.

Sight and touch...Hmm, hard to lose I think. Less bright is certainly a way to describe what it would be like. Hearing? Also a loss...But your compelling reasons for the other two are sound, and valid.

Wouldn't it be interesting to blind fold ourselves for a week and see how it felt. Not so nice I think.

Thanks for joining in. Loved your response.

!ENGAGE 25

Absolutely Galen, what a loss. A very difficult question.

You definitely evoke some interesting responses with these questions 👍

Have a good day.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

What a lovely description of how important our senses are to us! I feel you.

I experiment with being blind sometimes, just for the fun of it or when I am bored. Still, it's difficult.

Which one will you experiment with? Loss of hearing? If you put on your earbuds, sounds will some how pass through and you will still hear something.

Hehehe, let's know how it goes 👍

Thanks Kemmy.

I don't know which one I'll do first, probably hearing and I'll use gun muffs or something. I can foresee a very irritated husband and frustrated daughter, but I'll see how things progress.

Have a good one :)

This answer is interesting. Learning to lip-read would be helpful so as not to lose the wonder of vision or touch.

I think we could all do well to do small experiments like these with ourselves. It's hypothetical for sure but it also prepares us for things that could happen to us. I've kind of made it a point to try out different things even though I don't need to such as brushing my teeth with the opposite hand. Have you tried it? It's not as easy as you think! It was a good exercise though because now I feel like I'm better with my left hand than of I didn't try that at all.

Good reasoning here! The thought of not hearing or seeing the little ones in our lives is really difficult to try to think. I like your compromise though, to learn sign language. You can still communicate with them!

Hi Cmplxty

Sorry for the late reply, my mom in law is visiting. Oh yes, I actually did try brushing my teeth with the other hand, it felt really weird and kinda alien, but apparently it activates different parts of your brain.

The experiment didn't go as well as planned, but I think it's actually something that will be a good practice to heighten your other senses every now and again. I discovered (while trying to sleep and being disturbed by mosquitoes), that as soon as you switch off the light, my hearing picks up immediately, switch the light on and your visuals take over, it is absolutely insane how lightning fast these changes take place.

Have a good week :)

I am going to have to say hearing.

You can somewhat overcome losing your sense of smell, sight, taste, or hearing. But if you lose your sense of touch, you wouldn't be able to sit up or walk. You wouldn't be able to feel pain.

That would be too much for me. I don't want to lose any buy, sight? I would never be able to see the world again, the face of my lover, the smile of my children...

Hearing? I wouldn't want to, but, having already known the hearing word, I could imagine what it sounds like, learn to lip-synch, or perhaps the cochlea would work on me.

I'm with you, losing any senses would be very challenging, not just from the physical aspect but from the emotional one also.

Hearing is my choice also, for the same reasons as you. Sure, not hearing the words I love you, the emotion and voice of the person saying it...Would be hard, but still, the other two senses are indispensable to me.

!ENGAGE 25

It would be difficult emotionally, but I would be able to read lips, so coping with life would be doable. At the very least, possible.

It's a logical choice for sure.

There has already been too much ENGAGE today.

Oh man! 'Sophies choice' almost!

I am blind as a bat without my glasses already so can possibly empathise with this to a degree, but not at all to the degree of total and utter blindness. I have experienced marked hearing decline over the last couple of years due to working in a noisy factory, even with ear protection and am having a lot of frustration at not quite catching entire conversations, or the nuance of lower register conversation.

But the idea of not feeling a hug from those most important to me, that's unthinkable! I am dangerously close to abstaining from a choice and being like a rebellious politician who will not vote in favour of a paycut, even though the country and the people are going to shit and have nothing...

I am gonna deflatedly choose to have a hearingectomy and hope that I have enough amazing music tracks memorised inside my head to play out the soundtrack to my life whenever I need them because the idea of living without music or my family's voices is a tough decision.

Let's all hope that the ravages of ageing spare us total loss of any of our senses even though we know there will likely be a decline in some of them. We really do need the combination of them all to live a full and fruitful life. I'm sure many will feel a surge of gratitude for the simple things in life that are actually not simple at all when contemplating this topic. Maybe also contemplate the lives of those not as fortunate but who have adapted in as many ways as they can to enjoy life to the fullest.

Happy weekend to you all, may it be one that sees you make the very most of all 5 senses alongside a liberal dose of fun, family, friends and fulfilment. 👍😎

So did you tell us which sense you'd shitcan? I'm not sure what I just read. Point it out to me would'ya!

I am gonna deflatedly choose to have a hearingectomy 👈👈👈

Jeez do I have to do all the heavy lifting for ya Days?

I am gonna deflatedly choose to have a hearingectomy? 👈

Do you see it now, already given up the eyesight??? Blink once for y...

Gahhh why bother, sometimes I think I'm the only one with any professionalism round here... mumbles incoherently while exiting the fray...

Blink once for y has never been so funny in my life! If I had to explain why I'm laughing right now they'd never understand.

THIS! 👆☝

Literally how I feel about the internal monologue or scenario of events being played out in my head constantly... Like ya say Brother, they'd never understand... ((Even after I explain)).

Lol he writes quite the long comments sometimes but that's the fun part about him!

I think loss of hearing is a popular choice and makes sense but there's arguments against it too. Let's hope we never have to choose huh?

!ENGAGE 25

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Yeah I think losing ones hearing could be manageable if you have a decent sound track to live your life by! I can say that the best music is probably behind us, so not listening to any of the horse shit that comes out nowadays is probably a good thing lol.

I think I would go mad though, only hearing my own voice inside my head! I hear it enough as it is lol

I can say that the best music is probably behind us.

Haha I was actually thinking that when I wrote it lol. I always have a tune whirling round in my head, so think the internal sound system would still work.

I think I would go mad though, only hearing my own voice inside my head! I hear it enough as it is lol

This made me laugh, I say to my family and workmates all the time, you think you have it bad, you can walk away from me, I can't. Even when I sleep I cannot switch this bloody annoying voice off!

Weirdly, I ponder this question a lot (though I choose between sight, hearing, and sense of smell lol).

So answering this is relatively easy because I have already thought about it!

I couldn't imagine being unable to see. There is too much beauty around, and I would miss sunsets, and clouds, and all of the quirkiness in the world.

Hearing seems like it might be easier to lose because you can use everything else to kind of make up for it. Except, you can't. I adore music and to be unable to hear it anymore would break my heart.

So, I would have to go with touch. Which is also a horrible thing to do as I am an extremely tactile person. But it seems like the lesser of the evils compared to losing sight and hearing.

Touch seems to be a common theme for the responses today! I chose it as well but there's great arguments for all of them, though I haven't seen anyone choose to lose their sense of sight. That's an easy one for all of us, not seeing is very difficult!

Hey there. Touch huh? Interesting.

I understand the sight and hearing thing of course...So much to miss out on...Music, sounds of nature, whispers from one's lover.

I was going to do smell but wanted to make it a little harder as I thought a lot would choose losing the sense of smell.

Thanks for joining in this week.

!ENGAGE 25

Hehehehe, you are right about that @galenkp if you included smell, a lot would have chosen that and I would be among the lot hahaha.
Anyways it seems many are going for the sense of touch so far

Most are, let's see how it goes for the rest of the weekend.

Yup smell would've been a 'no brainer' alongside the other options. I'm a little disturbed at how many are choosing touch so quickly. This was the one that I had to retain tbh. Alongside sight, these form so many of the meaningful moments of life.

I do wonder if age plays a part in the choice demographic. I think we value some things that may have been taken for granted a lot more in our younger days.

I'd never choose touch out of these three...I'd miss too much I think, and yes I think age and circumstance is playing a part in the responses. It's an interesting discussion though right?

Incredibly interesting, massively engaging too... Some may say that's kinda the point in an engagement initiative 😂

I think it's a quandary we've all contemplated at one time or another but never had to hone in on a definitive answer till now!

#nohidingbitchezzz

Oh dear, that hashtag was most out of character! 🧐

Kudos on that hashtag mate...But what have you done with the real stevenwood? Lol.

Gave him a kinda makeover, A bit like Olivia Newton John at the end of Grease, only I would've stubbed the cigarette end out on Travolta's baby-ass creased chin!

Wow! This 'life keeps kicking me in the balls', pissed off vibe is following me around on the blockchain this week ahaha

My new signoff is gonna be:

"When life gives you lemons, throw citric acid in the eyes of your enemies!"

Catchy Huh? 😂

I think I still would have chosen touch over smell... smells can evoke so many memories :D

Yes, olfactory senses are such a powerful trigger to the mind.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

I would say hearing, i do sign, back in the days we even did vlogs with the sign language online, letter at the time. So i can miss that one and still have the quality of life I guess, and the fact i have 40+ years with hearing i would remember what sound is like. I would definietely miss it and the fact that the three are here now i am grateful for, but you made me choose.

I just saw a baby getting a special hear aid and hearing his mum for the first time, that was so cool , he has a life in front of him, I would pass my hearing on to a one in need.

It's seeming to be a fairly popular choice and for a person who has had a lifetime of hearing it might make a lot of sense. I'd miss many things though, if I were not to have my hearing.

I've never seen it in real life but I've seen people on documentaries see or hear for the first time, as adults. It must be an amazing sensation.

I appreciate you stopping by.

Vriendelijk bedankt.

(I hope the translation works.)

!ENGAGE 25

If you meant to say I'm doing this blind you only missed it by three words.

Lol. I'll pay that.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

My niece was born with loss of hearing, many years later after learning to sign, got an implant, many times she purposely switched off in noisy places.

I think if you don't have something how will you miss it. Older age many lose hearing and/or sight which normally go first.

Thank goodness this is only a thought provoking exercise. Have a great weekend.

I think I saw the same video too! It was an infant and such a wonderful thing to see her smile and start to giggle when she heard her parents voices for the first time!

Having lived the way we have, I think reflecting on past experience could certainly help shape our choice here. Seems like it had for you!

I don’t want to think about it and have to choose but if I have to that would be the choice

Yes that video went viral and the fact that the baby reacted and the face when the sound apparently came in to the brain was magic

Hi! Happy Saturday to you. What a question this weekend, really difficult. All the senses are important, each one has something unique and essential so it is hard to choose to lose any...

But if I have no choice, I would choose to sacrifice (with all the pain in my soul) the sense of touch. Not because it is the least important to me, is because I would not want to stop seeing or hearing. It seems the 'least worst' to me. Even though I think I would miss out on a lot of great experiences if I couldn't feel anything anymore, it makes me sad just thinking about it. 😂 But at least I would have my vision and my sense of hearing to keep seeing beautiful places and listening to the sounds around me.

What complicated topic you have chosen ... I'll be thinking about this all day 😅.

Have a nice weekend!

I think that's a logical choice...The lesser of three evils. I chose hearing to lose. I mean I couldn't fathom not feeling the touch of my lovers hand or mine on hers...I'd miss whispered words of course, and music, but for me hearing was the loss.

It's a difficult question right? Thanks for stopping by.

Yeah sense of touch is one that is important but in some situations is expendable. I agree with your choice and reasoning here!

Team Touch represent! 🤣

Dear @galenkp and all the community members! Have a nice day!

If one of my senses that I want to lose in my eyes. Why?

My grandmother died and before it happened she became blind from hardworking for the welfare of the family.

My mother died and also became blind because of diabetes. They were the love of my life. They were so hardworking before and when their sights were gone, they able to relax, sitting down the whole day and night with my family members who took care of them. They felt our love. Yes, the last time I visited them in 2014, they were both blind but they both saw my feelings, my presence at that time with their tender touch. Oh, how I missed them both. They are now in heaven. And I know, they are no longer blind today. They see me, they see us and that's how I feel. That is why , if ever, I lost one of my senses.. That is my eyesight. Thank you..

Wow tough one. But you are right, having people around that love you and care for you it might be bearable. For those that don't it will be a different story I suppose.

So your family was still blessed with love and care even though they faced loosing sight.

And they for sure are watching you now :)

Yes, I am so emotional today upon writing my comment here. Thank younfor dropping a good comments.

You'd prefer to lose your sight...I like how you've thought this through and have drawn upon the way your family looked after your grandmother and mother when they lost their vision.

Thanks for joining in.

!ENGAGE 25

Yes, I could accept losing my sight like how my beloved grandmother and mother lost it.
Thank you @galenkp

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Someone who chose sight! I didn't know if I would see one but it looks like you have a really good reason for choosing it. Thanks for sharing the information of these wonderful ladies in your life! They indeed seemed to relax and just enjoy themselves in their final years. Not too bad a way to live, I think!

Yes, because of thrir love to us, how they work for our family, the time they lost their sight.. we showed our love, care and tenderness.

Ah you're the first that I've come across that would that chose to lose sight!
Interesting perspective and I like how you working gratitude, caring and family into your logic. Thanks for sharing.

Nice meeting you my friend @gvkanten
Thank you for your nice words. If ever, I want to accept that if God will make me blind. He knows better what is good for me.

Oh god.. this is much more difficult question than I was expecting 😂

After reading your prompt, I went on a little hike and unintentionally started throwing this question around my head quite a bit.

At first, the answer was easy for me.. touch. My interests, passions, and life all revolve around sight and sound. I'm a fairly active person, and it would be very very difficult for myself not to be. Therefore I need my sight. I'm also extremely interested in the arts that both involve sight and sound. Film is a huge interest of mine. Music is arguably just as big for me. Photography. Painting. Back to film, not just the visual aspects but the ways in which the audio interacts with the video.

But, then, I started thinking about what losing touch actually meant. I don't think I could even type without a sense of touch. Romantic life? Gone. And I don't just mean sexually. But I feel that it would be difficult for romance to last on any real level without some form of touch. There can be so much meaning to even just a comforting hand or a hug. I couldn't cuddle with my dog. I couldn't enjoy taking showers. I feel like losing a sense of touch would eradicate most of the pleasures in my life.

Taking all that into consideration, I think I have to go with hearing. I would be devastated, but I could still continue to do the things that I enjoy and I'm sure eventually I would somewhat adjust to the loss of hearing. It was a close tie with sight. Feeling, however, went from my first to ABSOLUTE last choice.

That was a really interesting one.. and difficult.

What a great and thought out answer here man! I too first thought of touch as it is one I could live without. Having a romantic partner and all that though really complicated it and I think your choice is definitely a good one. We could certainly figure out a way to get the replacement of sound into our lives again! Could the same be said for touch though? Technology that helps somehow with visual or hearing stimulation for touch? Interesting thought experiment!

Imagine trying to skate without feeling in your body!? hahah. I mean, I guess maybe it would be interesting then though because you wouldn't feel pain? I guess there's a lot of open interpretation as to what loss of touch actually means!

I doubt any technological solution to touch would be nearly the same. I mean, I know it's not for hearing or sight, either, but touch.. I don't know. It would feel too artificial. I feel as though sight and hearing are functional commodities, however touch is a much more personal and emotional thing. It's difficult to imagine having a very personal experience in life without touch. The others, I could see myself adapting to. But it seems to me that touch is an entirely different thing. Sure, visuals and audio evoke emotions within yourself. However, touch is actually living that emotion.

Visuals and audio can often be passive while touch is always personal. Maybe that's what I'm trying to say?

I knew the topic would be hard this week but it's been so interesting to see the reasoning behind each person's choice, including yours.

Like you I would go with hearing, as per my last post. For the same reasons as you actually. Sure, there's so much to lose but sight and touch? No way I would want to go without them.

!ENGAGE 25

Yeah I stand pretty firm on my decision with that one. That was by far the toughest question of this nature I’ve had to think about in a really long time! Thank you!

It's pretty confronting. I mean imagine blindfolding yourself the moment after you read this comment. Imagine that blindfold on for 1 week...I think that would be an interesting week. Losing any senses would challenge a person's resolve I think.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

I would choose to lose my hearing.

It all depends on what new way you want to learn to process informationand communicate. For example, If you lose your sight, do you want to learn braille? If you lose your touch, do you want to rely on texnology to communicate. If you lose your hearing, do you want to learn sign language? Learning a new language is diffi ul so I would pick one that had the flatestest learning curve, and Im assuming tbat's sign language.

I think with today's technology hearing loss is the simplest one to lose and to replace. A pair of glasses modified with a Heads Up Display, and microphones on the ear clip pieces, and then soft ware to translate to text spoken language, and to translate to icons and lines of other items, like footsteps following, car approaching from the left, and triangulation of gunshots so one could avoid danger and yet still have a sense of their surroundings. I don't think the feel of a kittens fur can ever be replaced by technology, or the feel of a child's hug or kiss.

Sign language is indeed challenging but one of the best ways to learn it is just complete immersion in it. That's why traveling to foreign countries while speaking the language is the best way to learn it. Same here, though hopefully we don't have to lose our hearing!

Hi @galenkp, this is a very interesting question. If I had to choose I would choose to lose the ability to hear. Touch is the way of showing my love to my wife and my dogs, besides I use it to feel everything around me so I don't want to lose it. I love photography and nature so eyes are an indispensable part for me. Meanwhile, the loss of hearing is not something so terrible. I wouldn't have to hear noises or bad things around me. So I would focus more on what I'm doing and enjoy the life. Thanks so much @galenkp for this interesting question.

We have opted for the same option, touch and sight seem essential to me. Hearing is also important, but that way I wouldn't know if they speak ill of me haha

Yeah that's truth. Sometimes I think our life would be simpler if we coudn't hear what people say.

Yes. Sometimes it would be easier not to hear hurtful words from people.

The loss of hearing, in response to my questions seems to be popular although there have been those who have said sight or touch also. It's been interesting to see people's reasoning so that's for joining in..

!ENGAGE 25

I guess many people choose to loose hearing, also. It makes sense in my opinion. Anyway, thank you a lot for an interesting question.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

WOW, this has been a really difficult question, since yesterday I have been thinking about what sense I would lose by choice.
After so much thinking, I chose not to listen, although it is true that I would stop hearing great things, like my daughter's voice and her songs that make my life happy, the sound of the birds, the sea, the music. But I would also stop hearing unpleasant things like the terrible news that is happening today, like how devastating the pandemic has been, which has become part of people's everyday conversations.

Giving up any sense would bring loss and make one's life less enjoyable. It' has been interesting to see what people have chosen and the reasons behind the choice. Hearing has been a popular one for many different reasons. It would be terrible to have to chose in reality, but interesting to do it here as an exercise I think.

!ENGAGE 25

But this is a difficult exercise. It was very difficult for me to choose one. Many times one complains about things, but there are people who are born without any of these senses and manage to develop others to perfection.

Yes, we should be grateful huh?

Yes, we are truly privileged.

There has already been too much ENGAGE today.

Ah such a challenging one, really a thinker this week! I like it but don’t like it hahaha, it’s good to do challenging ones here and there instead of just light hearted ones I think!

I think I would have to go with feel.. as much as that would be challenging to deal with, I think feel is the easier of the three to lose. Without going into too much of the ways to adapt to the change in that, I think seeing and hearing are incredibly important for me for many reasons. Seeing is without a doubt one of our most important senses because we are very visual beings but for me, hearing is also crucial. In my line of work, hearing is incredibly important to have, both in what my job was before and what it’s turned into. I also would be sad to not hear my wife or sons voice anymore, particularly my son. That would kill me more than other things. I couldn’t hear him cry for me in the middle of the night when he gets his little night terrors and climbs in the bed, I also couldn’t be without Siena talking to me. I cherish the conversations we have and actual verbal conversations not through text or anything. We actually rarely text thankfully since it’s best to have a conversation.

My second brain though wouldn’t be too happy to lose the sense of feeling, I can tell you that though! Lol. Not feeling a boob anymore or anything great like that would be tough! Worthy sacrifice though for the other stuff!

Not feeling another boob in my life would not work so well...So it's hearing for me...😆

I've found it really interesting to see people's choices and their reasons behind them. I wasn't sure how the topic would go this week but have been really pleased to see people have jumped in and gotten out of their comfort zone.

Thanks for your great response, as always.

!ENGAGE 25

There has already been too much ENGAGE today.

Wow, this one really surprised me in a way that I didn't expect.

As you say the human being has a capacity for adaptation and it is impressive, I was delighted in those people who despite having some lack of these senses lead normal lives. I had a teacher on a diploma course who had a hearing loss, and although it is a partial loss, I was motivated to see her fulfilled and enjoying teaching classes (with her hearing devices).

How can I do without something so important and enjoyable? Seeing sunrises or the expressive smile of children, feeling the textures of life or not hearing the melody of a voice.

If in some hypothetical case I had to choose between them, I would choose to feel, it is not less than the others, however the other two connect me personally with my soul and my spirit.

Many have chosen the loss of the ability to touch and feel...Not something I think I'd be able to do but we all have our reasons. It's been cool to see everyone's thoughts on this question and thank you for yours.

!ENGAGE 25

There has already been too much ENGAGE today.

Well, we definitely agree that it is a difficult decision to make. I would rather prefer to be touched by inertia, without having the need to choose.

Because when I think about each of these senses, I ask myself, would I be able to do without any of them? And the answer is a resounding no. Not to feel a good plate of food! Naah impossible for me that I like to eat so much, I see that many talk about sex and this is important, but for me food is more important hahahaha. Hearing and seeing are different scenarios, I try to qualify which one is more indispensable but I fail to categorize.

Now, if put between a rock and a hard place to choose, I would decide to lose my sight, I've been thinking for several hours and I think I could cope with it, since I would still have my imagination and those beautiful memories. Although I would live with the regret of what was, I would not only lose my sight but also the harmony.

A few others have choses sight also...It's a big call in my mind and not one I'd be able to give up. I chose hearing. We are all different and have different ideas on things and so will always have differing opinions. Thanks for yours, I appreciate you joining in.

!ENGAGE 25

It is something very interesting and atypical what he is proposing that we choose. The senses are a fundamental pillar in our lives and just thinking about losing one of them is a reason for sadness and affliction.

There has already been too much ENGAGE today.

Interesting choice!
I think you're the second to team sight!

Food over sex huh?
What kind of food are we talking here? Burgers? Pasta? I have so many questions 😂

Wow! Wow!
It has been like an eternity. I can't even remember the last time I stopped by here and I am glad to have stumbled over this one.
Well for the question, just like every other person, it's difficult to choose or lose any.

My mom always says that none is better off than the other. This is because when I was a child, when I see blind people and how difficult life was with them, I would just quickly conclude that it's better off to be deaf or dumb than to be blind and also when I see one without legs, I would imagine being blind yet having legs to walk.

It's always one thing over the other and I always tried to compare which is better and as I grew up, I realized none was really better than the other.
So this question is really hard for me and I really don't think I would wanna lose any but for the purpose of this question, I would go with the sense of touch, that is feeling.

I do know that as humans, we are expected to feel things cause we are more like a working corpse without it but then come to think of it, I rather lose that than the other two. And in a way, not having a feeling or losing my sense of touch means I wouldn't feel pains or hurts or whatsoever, either physical injuries or emotional ones.
Apart from this, I never would wish to lose any for any reason whatsoever 😅
I need my feelings too as a human being lol.

So, you'd be happy never to physically feel another thing in your life? I guess with sight and hearing you'd still have a way to interact.

It's a fairly tough question I guess because losing any sense would severely inhibit a person's life. Make me respect those that have actually done so.

!ENGAGE 25

Yes, so much respect for those guys, I can't even imagine a life or even a day in their shoes

@galenkp Precisely, with sight and hearing you can still interact and be able to help/engage others. Losing feeling, you only take away your own enjoyment but doesn't mean you cant give touch/enjoyment to others... also at the same time you take away any pain for yourself! It's basically a win-win lol

Seems legit logic.

I think all the replies on the post all had good legit logic behind em too, it's such a personal preference which is why the post was so thought provoking and an interesting topic! 🤓

Thanks mate, I wasn't sure how the topic would go, but people are getting involved so it's all good.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Very nice response Zanos. Welcome to The Weekend hangout, I haven't seen you before. If this isn't your first time here, I must be blind.

You've made quite a splash since registering your account three months ago, well done! Welcome to Hive, the joint wasn't the same without you.

Lol, no you aren't blind but then this isn't my first time here either.
When I joined Hive three months ago, I was introduced to the weekend engagement by @trangbaby I don't see her often again but she does come around once in a while, I guess she is just busy with offline duties.
Thank you for the warm welcome

Oh yeah @zanoz, let's me introduce @dandays to you someone that I have no idea who he is but the weirdest and the most humorous person I have met on the blockchain so far. Check out his article and I'm sure you can't stop laughing when reading them. ( Who knows, he may be an American Comic actor from Hollywood, right? )

I bet he is😅😅🤣 just reading his replies made me laugh and to even think he said he has never heard of you lol.
That sentence was a little too tiny and almost invisible to be true lol.

My pleasure.

@trangbaby? Little Vietnamese wanderer chick with a new Xiaomi phone, great sense of humor, shares her travels on Pinmapple and sometime gets to writing so much whatever this is we forget what we were saying?

Never heard of'er

Hey heyyyy what's up @dandays.. I almost drop my new phone Xiaomi on floor because of ..you...I was laughing crazily and people around looking at me like I'm an alien. Oh yeah I'm going to post on pineapple soon later.
Wait guys, I'm devouring my seafood dinner 😝😜
Will check out the topic and get back to you guys soon.
Stay awake :) We have some fun later

Copy that, soon later. See you then!

Hahahah lol, I am glad you made her laugh but dropping her phone wouldn't have been so nice lol.
And I see she is here 🙂

Hey @zanoz, how is it going? Thanks for the mention, and it's great to see you here this weekend. 3 months ago, it was still a bad virus situation here and rainy days; I had no job and had much spare time to be around here and engage. However, life is back to normal here, tourism getting crowded, summer season around, and I'm getting super busy at the moment. Working night shift and going out day time...😆😃
Sorry, I don't check your posts very often. I hope you are doing well and having fun blogging on Hive.

Losing the sense of touch and feeling altogether is tough indeed. I don't know if I would include feelings on the inside of our body such as pains or thirst into the category but that would be incredibly difficult to learn to live with I think!

While I am an audio visual kind of person, I would rather give up the hearing than the seeing or the ability to touch, feel, taste. I would miss some of the sounds of the world, but would I miss the sounds of the cars in the street? The sounds of gun fire in the streets? the sounds of lover quarrels? There are a lot fewer sounds that bring pleasure to me than the number of touch things that bring pleasure.

Hearing has the future potential to be fixed much easier than the complete loss of touch. As people have pointed out in comments below there are a lot of things covered by touch.

Seeing is something I would not want to loose, even though my eyesight is beginning to decay some with age, I still like being able to see, and can still see well enough for now. I would miss not seeing the clouds drift across the sky, see the birds fly in for a snack, or see the antics of the squirrel teasing the cat behind the glass.

The reality is there just is not that much to miss with hearing loss. Some music, the voices of loved ones, the sounds of the wind chimes in a gentle breeze, or the sounds of nature,

With touch, I can not imagine loosing the sense of feel. To me that would be the most irreplaceable of the three. I would miss the taste of food, I would miss the feeling of hot and cold, the feel of a kittens fur, or the fur of my dogs, the happy swish of a tail against your ankle as you come home to a happy pup that is glad to see you. The feel of wiping away tears of sorrow or joy from a loved ones cheeks, the feel of the lips kissing you, or the feel of a childs hand in your squeezing as they get a little bit scared.

It is a touchy call, but touch would be the most difficult to replace by science.

Good topic choice for the weekend

!ENGAGE 15

Well thought out here and I agree with a lot of your points even though I chose touch. It would be interesting to see what technology could come up with as a way to supplement the touch sensation in the form of sight or sound.

I haven't looked since his morning, but it seems that not many if any would give up the eyesight. So it has been a toss up with touch and hearing. Some great answers all around.

I thought-provoking topic this week and one I wasn't sure would be responded to very well, but I was wrong thankfully. I guess I wanted to get people thinking, and maybe grateful that they have all their senses.

What's really cool is that people are justifying their answers, really thinking about it, like you above, and that's great. I'll be revealing mine in a post today so let's see how it goes huh?

!ENGAGE 25

Seems to be going pretty good in the comments, I'll take another gander, (since I saved my eyes), and see how the trend is then. It is pretty interesting some of the answers.

I know...Some cool answers and thought-patterns...I didn't expect people to get so into it so I'm pleased they're enjoying the topic.

Protest!! - Loss of See Or Hear Or Feel - All Wrong....

See - See new ideas, then file into memory bank to reflect on during boring moments or tedious tasks.
Hear - Enjoying friends conversation you may feel emotion. Hear bad news you may need to see a silver lining....
Feel - Unable to use one sense how would you relate. Not able to conjure up an image, or sound how would you feel?

So you see the story, hear the story, how do you feel about it?

"Where would you be without the ability to see, hear or touch"...... Now physical....

Choice.... If I HAD to Select one, it would be hearing, massive void in ones life, perhaps become over imaginative never hearing birds song, all three would render one missing a lot in life.

I agree Joan, there would be a massive void in life without any or all of these senses...But hearing, I'd say is a decent choice. I'm doing a post in the WEEKEND community tomorrow with my choice. It's a difficult question huh?

Thanks for joining in.

!ENGAGE 25

That's is worse than pulling the short straw, one can not even start to imagine life without one of your senses.

I will be back to see more tomorrow, yes one long walk, much pondering then decision time 🙃 Have a great evening!

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

I'm just so golly jee prouda all ya'all with enough nerve to answer the question.

Hello @galenkp! It's been a while but I have some few hours this morning so I decided to join in. I see it's an interesting but difficult challenge this weekend!

Give up my sense of sight, touch or hearing?! 👀 This is difficult! Very. This is the reason I admire disabled people especially those who had their senses intact but lost it along the way maybe due to accident or sickness. It's a painful journey for them.

I schooled with blind students and became friends with some of them. So I can understand a little of some of their challenges. In excitement I would want to explain what I see before me then realise they cannot enjoy the sight like me.

If I am forced to choose, I would go for sense of hearing. I need my sense of sight and touch. They are everything. Now hearing, I love music but I do not appreciate noise of any kind. Also, there are hearing aids that I could get to help amplify sounds. Means I'll have to learn sign language as well. 🙂

In this case, this hypothetical situation, what if I said no hearing aides would be able to amplify your hearing? Would you still choose to lose hearing knowing you would never hear another thing in your life? No music, sweet words from a loved one, the sounds of waves on the beach, birds singing...Nothing.

Still choose hearing?

!ENGAGE 25

O dear! That would be HARD! 😖 I was kinda banking on the hearing aid to cushion the effect of hearing loss.

Yes, I'll still choose hearing. 😔 Then I will watch people's faces and read their lips to understand what they are saying.

You know what this also means? I have noticed that people lean on other senses when they lose one. Somehow our bodies have a way of making up for the loss of any parts. So I'm sure my other sense will pick up the slack and I may end up honing my other sense to somehow detect sound.

🤔 Don't ask me how? Lemme think first 😄

It is true that when one sense is lost the others become keener...Let's hope we never have to find out though right?

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

There is no way I am losing my sense of hearing. That is totally out of the world.
I literally can't do without sounds and good ones at that. No way!.
What a pretty hard choice you made, I wonder if you would have been able to survive that but thank God this is just but a topic to be discussed @kemmyb 😁

It's almost an eerie hypothetical to think about. Without smell you can't taste. Without touch how are you gonna know when dessert is in your mouth? No way I'd give up my eyesight.

I'm hoping he gives us a fourth option before the end of the weekend.

Hehehe, I chose hearing! I'm thinking sense of hearing is easy to manage. Then again, is it really easy to manage? I would not want to find out. Also, I need my sense of touch and sight, just like you too!

Will he give us a fourth option? I doubt. But this exercise is good. Helps us understand what people in this position go through.

You have not chosen an option yet. @dandays
!giphy okay!

You have not chosen an option yet.

I'll have what she's having. That makes it so much easier, I'll just follow your lead.

untitled.gif

Ok. That's the second time you've sent that TI gif, I was confused the first time.

Totally makes sense now.

Fourth choice is to give up your sense of apathy.

Although... Without this I would have nothing, this is my one true companion along the journey of life... Damn I will try and think up a 5th option before the weekend is over...

5th option STAT!

I thought a fourth option would be a good idea. Thanks a lot, Steve! You ruined everything you apathetic bastage!

Ahahahaha Edward nihilism is my middle name, what can I tell ya?

What about sense of self importance?

Aahh crap no, what self respecting Englishman could ever do away with that and you've spent too long here, you're probably infected by the British variant of that... To the batcave drawing board it is once more 😒

Dear Sir Steven Edward Wood and his majesty:

You're making it a lot easier to say eye sight.

Cheerie-0, chap!

Ask my family, my colleagues my non-existent friends, they would tell you that after 5 minutes in my company and you would circle the hearing option three times!!!

Although they also despite my gratuitous overuse of cross it out strikethrough too, so what do they know?

😂😂😂 Now you want a 5th option??

So I'm a Princess, big deal!!

The more options he's making available, the easier it's getting to say eye sight.

Could you image losing your apathy?!? And then he just listed a fifth option—self respect. No way. I'd rather feel my way around in the dark.

So now your got me thinking... dangerous!

Consider options; song just popped into my head, so you need sight to be reading this, touch to type an eager retort, and them ears to hear it... think that's what they there for Chose....

Cat Stevens - Moon Shadow - Yup from YouTube....

I know, right? Its like the mans greed is insatiable, I'm glad you are seeing this @kemmyb everyone thinks he is 'such a nice dude' they don't get to see this side of him! 😂

I do agree that not hearing the annoying things would definitely be a bonus in this scenario lol. I don't know if hearing aides count but we could certainly adapt to a life without hearing!

I would give up hearing. It is so much noise anyway lol. I value sight and touch and I would not see myself without them. But if I would have to pick.... Silence is not as bad as darkness

Hearing huh? It would be good not to hear all of societies bullshit I think although...Nature, the sounds of nature...I'd miss that for sure...Music, the whispers of a lover...It's a tough question right? No matter which you chose there a great deal of loss.

!ENGAGE 25

Yes, there would be a loss. But not as big as not seing. I can't imagine that. Especially because I love to paint. A lover could draw me stuff or touch me. In some cases that might be more sincere than words. But I want them all 3 lol in real life

Yes, I'm with you...All three work.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Hearing is noise to you? Okay that's a very serious point made 🧐🤔
Trust me if you are surrounded with what feels like heaven on earth then hearing wouldn't really be so much noise to you again hahaha.

It can be sometimes. We live in a noisy society. Everywhere noise. People dislike silence or find it awkward so they always try to speak to fill the void. Unnecessary blabber. I enjoy sounds a lot, good music, good quality conversations, nature sounds. But to pick from the three, I thought what would I rather lose. I can't imagine a world where I could not see as I am a painter.

Lol, now I get your point. Yes, you are right. Some people like find it very difficult to seal their lips even when they are making ridiculous and unnecessary blabs.
It's still a difficult choice though.

For sure. I always admired people who know when to shut up and enjoy silence. Not in a weird way, but rather in a calm manner. It is very pleasant to be comfortable enough with a person that you don't have to have small talk just to kill silence. Very powerful.

As horrible as it sounds I understand your position: Silence over darkness.

Yup, exactly what I thought. Pick the best from the worst

Some loss can be managed that's for sure. Not hearing might not be too bad, though when we are older and can think quite well, would we go mad by listening to our own voice all the time? Since we had it up until this point, one might go mad not hearing another voice!

Hahahaha funny. I guess that we are very used with our own voice but I guess that what we area hearing is not what it is. Usually when somebody else hears our voice, it is perceived differently. When I record myself and hear my voice, it sounds differently lol.
I like silence but I also like the sounds. It depends on the mood

Oh nice. I don't particularly enjoy darkness, but I guess it is all about the mind and what we imagine that darkness might hide.

My hearing. This is a bit weird choice because my hearing is better than my sight. But I can't give up either my sight or touch- I think that both of them are greater part of who I am. Also I believe that after losing hearing I would have to rely on others less than after losing sight or touch. I could still communicate with notes or maybe I would learn to read from lips...

I would have chosen hearing too but... I can't imagine a world without music!

@magenta24 you know this feelings 💫😌💯
What is a world without music? I can't give up that either.

If you lose your hearing at least you won't ever have to put up with people nagging you...The boss at work telling you're late or people in the line at the bank when you cut in!

Good choice!

!ENGAGE 25

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

@fieryfootprints you know at some point I thought the same, reading lips and using notes but then when I remembered music, the rhythm that aids my dance, the cord from my piano? No no no, I just can't let go of that.
Music is life, sound is living and it's very essential too.
What a tough choice there 🧐

I can see why some people would not want to lose their hearing. But at times I spend months without listening to any music(and at times I listen to music all day...). So maybe I could survive without it.

Lol, I see. One man's food is another man's trash like they always say.

Well thought out and maybe you don't need to rely on others as much with a loss of touch. It depends on the situation a lot though so it might need some help from others then!

it is true that people and their situations are different. Some might be more successful in dealing with a lost sense while others could have more problems.

This a really tough question. I think if I had to lose one of those abilities right now, it would be seeing. That's my choice as I do more with my ears and feeling stuff is really important. I wouldn't be able to get the enjoyment of watching cartoons or anime, not even new places or my beautiful friends, but loosing any of the other two would be a worse things. I love textures and I love listening.

Interesting. Losing sight hasn't been a popular choice but a few have said it and all had their reasons as do you. That's been the interesting part of the topic this week, reading about peoples justifications of their choice.

Thanks for joining in.

!ENGAGE 25

Yes, some people have interesting ideas about this. Their reasons make the topic compelling. I've been missing a lot of this and that's a shame, but it's good to be back.

Good to have you back! Hope you've been well.

There has already been too much ENGAGE today.

I could not live without seeing. I would miss out on many beautiful things, for example seeing my daughter's development, even seeing how I age

It's just a thing of perspective. I'm a musician, so hearing and feeling is way more important for me than seeing.

That is another point, for you it is essential to have good ears. It's understandable.

And also I have no kids and not missing anything if I'm not looking at my face 😂

As I am starting to write my answer, I just realize that I still haven't decided on which of these 3 senses I would prefer to live without.
I remember Anica, my Bulgarian great-grandmother asking to feel my face and hands when I was little because she couldn't see me, asking to hear my voice while I tell her a few words, a poem, or a song. I was scared of the situation, being about 5-6 years old. But I felt her love and kindness, while she was touching me and cuddling me...and from the tone of her voice. I still wonder how she could live so many years being blind...
At less than 1 year, I had surgery behind both of my ears for otitis. In time, I lost hearing from acute otitis a few times. Last summer, it happened for 10 days while I was living in a tent at the seaside. My senses were sharpening...kinesthetic, olfactive, gustative...I was enjoying life but couldn't hear ...nada!
For the last 5 months, I have been doing 3 RMNs trying to find out why some of the doctors I have seen said I might paralyze...the answers are still not very satisfying.

Therefore, I'll go for HEARING.
Why?

I still want to walk, run, swim, do deep-dives, enjoy making love in any position that I want :) I want to FEEL life.
I am a visual learner, 60% so seeing is very important for me, as well. I'll keep that :)

Hearing is an attribute of our heart in my opinion, just like the other senses. And, I have managed to understand non-verbal communication since 2003, when I first started my neuro-linguistic Programming training. I know now that "I hear you" might often stay for I understand you and what you're feeling. I can understand people even if they don't tell me everything, even if it happens for them to lie, or even if they don't talk at all. Sometimes, we can see in their eyes what they want to tell us. I might miss one of my best friends, which is music. I might miss my beloved ones' voice. I might miss my own voice, my singing moments, my crying moments, my soul might want to verbalize through sounds and hear sounds to connect with.
For now, I am grateful for the health that I have and hope to improve.

Thank you, @galenkp for yet another exceptional topic for this week.

With appreciation,
@regenerette

alina_tudorache_guiding_coaching_at_the_university.jpg

PS: That speaking conference I have been delivering training and workshops for 2 days was the highest challenge for my auditory system. Those microphones didn't work and not all the participants could hear me. It happened the same for me, I could hardly hear them. So I asked them to get closer and be less formal. It was more frustrating than all the cases of otitis that I had :))

Thanks for this really cool response and an insight into your personal troubles around hearing.

I have to say that for me losing hearing was my choice also and for pretty much the same reasons you say as well. Not having hearing would be terrible, but sight or touch? No way, I' would never give them up...Again, for the same reasons you mention.

All of our senses are so vital to our experiences in life and losing one, or all would be so tragic and limiting on life. Losing hearing is probably the lesser of evils in my mind as the other senses, sight, touch and smell for instance would be able to compensate a little easier. Losing my sight isn't something I would feel comfortable with at all.

!ENGAGE 25

It is true that all of our senses are vital, but it is strong when you have all your senses well, and due to some circumstances you lose one.
I know a boy who was born without being able to see, but he gets on very well, he walks alone in the street, and he is also an excellent and well-known flutist. This is how they manage to develop other senses.

Yes, there are many such cases. But losing sight after having it for so long must be terrible.

Yes it is. My grandfather once lost his sight and it was strong for him, I think for everyone at home, he was upset, but he managed to cope, then they operated And he saw again.

They fixed his eyes? Amazing what they can do these days!

No hahaha. I had a cataract. And they could correct the sick.

@galenkp thank you for another challenging post. It has created great interaction and I loved to take a break yesterday from what I was doing and read other people's responses and comments to some. I am so curious about this weekend's topic!

For this week...You mentioned survival a while back...But I can't say more. :)

I am a Leo (a curious cat as well). I'll ave to be patient until next week-end and see. Which is quite a challege in itself for me.

 3 years ago (edited)

They say patience is a virtue but shut up with all of that and tell me now! Lol.

Haha!

I shall practice it and if I cannot anymore, I'll write you during this week...begging, probably, that you disclose more!
Hugs and good-night!

There has already been too much ENGAGE today.

Nice just because track dude. 👍🏿 It's early, not certain I've ever rocked a country jam this early but that was refreshing.

This hypothetical is never an easy one. We always take for granted what we have. My wife gives zero shits about candy type stuff cuz she's blessed with a grill that's never had an issue her whole life. Myself, however, I'm a twice a year dentist visitor so I don't partake in candy type stuff and I brush my grill after every meal. Take a guy with one leg, for example, when he sees all you two-legged people walking he's: "why are they walking when they could be running?!?"

I swear there's a point around here somewhere I'm trying to make

I have a buddy who's son is deaf. Brother I feel terrible for him! I dated a chick once who had some extraordinary thyroid thing going on so she couldn't taste food. I feel terrible for her.

I've never been able to fully weigh in on this debate but the point I'm trying to make, I guess, is I feel more heartbroken for the deaf guy or the chick who can't taste than I do the blind guy/chick.

I'm a country lad my man, I rock it all the time. Glad you liked it.

I'm writing a post now with my choice, for tomorrow...It's a tough question for sure.

Firstly, thanks for your consistency Cuz I knew I could count on you responding. Had I left this just because track the first time, it likely would've been a lot more concerning than funny.

Just make it through the first 11 words, that's all you gotta do!

That's pretty good actually. Also the video reminded me of my roller skating days back in 1982.

YES! Now you really did it!! I got that bad wheel thing but you know I was at World On Wheels on Fridays for breakdancing night!

Really cool you gave that track a listen. 👍🏿 I'm a big fan of that d-d-d-d-d really fast type rap. And anything Mr. McGraw's wife sings of course.

Tim McGraw visited our bar back then and left 100€ tip for everyone, I took that day off...sucked bad for me lol.

Yeah you really know how to spoil a good story.

I listen to a lot of music, appreciate many different types and so I'm always happy to hear something new. And yeah, I agree with you she's a great singer.

Finished up a ride just now and snapped this shot to tell you good question, I couldn't part with my hearing and miss that bird. The things we take for granted.

I’ve thought about this. Saw the question from last night but couldn’t decide. Somehow it seems clear to me now. First of all, if I had a choice, I’d want this “giving up a sense” thing to be a timed activity.😂 I could bear it for a few minutes or seconds. If permanently...
Sight has to stay. I need to see all the colors of this life. Love to travel, see different places, see people, see family, see my burger when it’s ready, all the colorful fruits, see all the beautiful flowers, watch a movie...
Touch has to stay too. I’m actually a bit surprised so many gave it up. Lol
I need to touch and feel the water at the beach, that warm blanket, that fuzzy teddy bear, warm water, warm cup of tea. Nothing like a good hug, cuddle, kiss...I could take this further but let’s stop here. The sense of touch is very important.
Hearing, if I’ve thought about it well enough, I could do without. I love music and would miss hearing it but I could rely on those songs with specific dance moves, I’d see the moves and know what to do. I’d already know how to respond to flashing lights from an ambulance. I’d do better at reading lips. Would be able to “see what one’s saying”. Could always use, “Say that again”. I had/have the experience of living in a system with a language I almost totally didn’t understand. I could hear but was basically “deaf”. Couldn't understand a thing but sight helped a lot. I imagine that like losing any other, I’d just learn to cope and the other senses would become sharper.

I chose hearing too! The thing I would mIss the most would be music.

Posted using Dapplr

Yeah. I think we'd really miss the music. Guess we'd have to rely a lot on memory and create our own rhythms. 😃

It would be such a difficult choice to have to make in real life right? There's so much to lose with the loss of just one sense.

Yes, it would really be a difficult decision. It's good to actually stop and think about it. Good brain activity. Feeling grateful for my senses.😅

Epic..!

Oh man...

This is gonna be...

H U G E . . .

untitled.gif

Haha. I dunno why that tickled me quite as much as it did lol. Sitting here giggling like an idiot 😂

"Like one????", I hear you cry

I wonder what blind people would think if they could see that gif?

Yooj!

Huh..?

Bit deaf here, could you speak up..?
untitled.gif

You know what usually helps with that?

Soap and water

TP needed... most definitely!

They got q-tips, them earwax whatever they are things that clear your ears or whatever.

He has no excuse for not hearing!

untitled.gif

So long as it's not their phone....

Lol...I can't wait!

Yer gonna have to my friend...

I am 600 miles out. Home in 10 hrs.

Teaser..!

untitled.gif

Keep ya fucking eyes on the road ya mad bastard! Not on your phone. Lol.

Keep the shiny side up bro.

Can't help thinking if you focussed less on building the tension and suspense ((honestly, worse than Spielberg!!!))

You could make it home in 8. 🚛 Safe driving my friend, we will see ya when you're back 👍😎

Are they really bathroom breaks..?

Or text room breaks?

Ask the guy at the rest stop waiting to poo...

Lmao

phonetoiletchart.png

Wash your hands after retrieving it!

Don't send messages dripping in 💩💩

Oh man! I think there is a legitimacy in fishing it out of your own loo but at a rest-stop... Oh I think I would have to declare that as 'man down' chalk it up to collateral damage and move on...

There are places I refuse to fish. Sir you found my limit!!! 😂

What box would we √ on the insurance replacement form..?

Dog ate my phone..?

untitled.gif

On the other hand, losing all 3 would probably put you into a complete godly zen-like state and achieve enlightenment lol 😇

Lol...Yeah possibly. I'd be buggered though.

Where would you be without the ability to see, hear or touch?

Interesting. If I don't have these abilities, then I will always be seen as an innocent person. A person who hasn't seen the ugly faces of reality. A person who never heard unpleasant remarks from other people. A person who never experienced accidentally touching unwanted objects and surfaces in a crucial situation. Sadly, to me, these are what can define an innocent person nowadays.

Are these disabilities a blessing in disguise? I say, if you're a person who's tired of what life is becoming to the world day by day right before your eyes, then it's not a surprise that you'll agree and wish to have it instead. However, if you're someone who hasn't seen and sensed the beauty of the world, you might consider it a curse. And no one will blame you for that. And lastly, if you're someone who lost these abilities and still managed to believe that it is a gift, then you are blessed. To think that way, I think it needs a lot of courage and a strong faith that everything has a purpose.

Sometimes, any of these three is a wish from someone in any other part of the world. To this modern-day reality where conflicts exist, someone might see it as a blessing rather than a curse. Although someone might wish to have these abilities disappear, someone might be desperately asking for it.

If there's black, there's white. If there's good, there is evil. The world has to maintain its balance. And life acts as an overseer to that balance. Faith, destiny, and beliefs will all come together to make up life and create a way of living. Some will be courageous, while others might slowly give up.

But at the end of all this, there is a person who has the right to pave the way towards what he/she believes to be true - YOU.

Interesting and deep response...Have you decided which you would wish to lose if you had to lose one?

That got me thinking, and I debated a bit for this one but I think, I would go losing my sense of hearing. I spent much of my time being in the corners. And I'm fond with the thought that I've been an observer ever since.

Hearing is a popular choice I think, one can still communicate without it. Although, there would still be things I'd miss so much. Lucky we don't have to make this choice in the real world.

I thought of that too, and yes, we're lucky that we don't have to choose beween the two. just thought that I'd prefer a mute world rather than not see it's reality. There's a big difference than how you see it and how you imagine it to be.

Every negative situation in our life can turn into a blessing because of circumstances after or because we focus on what they bring in on the positive side, refocus pragmatically and gratefully on the positive, on its advantages. We can adapt and improve.

I wish it's as easy as said. But don't worry, it still a good thing to experience the bad sides of life. It makes you aware that not everything in life is a blessing for granted. I think knowing what is pain can make a strong person stronger. Endure and you will win.

Thank You to G-Dog for not throwing smell into the mix...

I mean how would you know if..?

Is she sitting on the only jet that works? None of the other ones are on. She picked a strange place to sit.

If that is the hot tubs jet system, it has a dead skunk stuck in it.

That too then. It could use some maintenance.

So in a fish type of perspective that would be like a human blowing just air...?

I loved the face of that girl in your gif...as she was preparing to ...
The fish is me when I do free deep dives and cannot breathe anymore so I quickly go to the surface :))

You're a bigger knucklehead than I am! Good work, it takes effort!

3 Senses...

I am sitting here, head still spinning from an 11 hour 600 mile ride.

All my senses are fucked right now, I am exhausted from a long trip and I have a chest cold. I will have to think about this one on Saturday as my brain is fried.

I made thousands of life and death decisions today. As every day. Nobody died, so the trip was a good one.

my brain is fried

This is excellent progress—model patient. It's nice to see you opening up in group therapy, embrace it! Next week we need to work on acceptance but this is a good start.

What a ride that musta been.

Someone did a woopsy.

I remember that episode.

That canned jump footage was every episode during the 7 seasons. And they trashed over 321 (1968/69/70) cars!

68 Charger (1984).jpg

I owned 2 of them when I was 19 years old, It is STILL My ultimate dream MOPAR.!

My dream Mopar too Randy...What a beast huh? There's a few here, some very nice ones...But my favourite is the one painted up like the General Lee. Love it.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

I came by intending to participate in The Weeknd topic and although I have really enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts, I am going to skip this week.
MS has already robbed me of so many body functions, and although I know it is a very real possibility, I don't even want to imagine losing one more. If I begin to speculate about which one might be next or what it would be like to live without it, I could very easily fall into a deep depression. So I'm just going to enjoy today and appreciate all the things that I can still do and be grateful that I still have sight, hearing and some touch. Happy Weekend!

Understand. Don't put yourself on the dark side again, picture yourself in a warm, embracing light. So bright that it doesn't matter where you are at right now, because it is just pure energy.

Have you ever wrote about the MS? It could be informative for people that don't know about it or only little. The Natural Medicine Community could be a right place to do so. I would certainly read it, cause I know what it is but not what it really means for anyone having to live with it.

Hope you have a great day 🤗

I mention it occasionally but have never written a post about it. I don't want pity, and maybe it is my way of staying more comfortably in denial if I don't talk about it! 😁

Fair enough 😊 But it doesn't have to be about pity. More about raising awareness, but of course, if you don't feel it you shouldn't write about it 🤗

You're loved. I talk about psoriasis and my spine issues here in Hive. It helps me ...talk...I have kept pain inside so many years but whenever I feel like it, I write about my health challenges here in Hive. I have created 2 FB groups 6 years ago for people with psoriasis, we are helping each other. I receive phone calls from some... weekly and try to help. It's about support and care. I cannot say how large my heart is...but I care. So, if you ever need me, I am here, Melinda. If not, be brave, enjoy life as much as you can.
I might be intrusive again and I apologize if so.
I am hugging you with my heart, in my thoughts.

Oh yeah, that's a good point. I'm sorry, I guess I didn't think if this topic may be a bit hurtful. My apology.

It's a great topic and no apologies necessary. It made me think about why I couldn't choose, but I really enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts and thinking that I would have thought much the same back before all this MS nonsense!

Thank you...I might have to come up with something to lighten the mood for next week.

God bless you Melinda! I hope today was the best day of the whole dang year. Nice to see you here. Galen comes up with great topics each week, I'll meet you back here next weekend, deal?

Thanks, @dandays! I've gotten really good at living life one day at a time and I'm quite content if I stay away from speculating about the future! I love Galen's Weekend posts and try to get over here whenever I'm not up to my eyeballs in birds and shadows!

I have no idea wha you're talking about.

Oh yeah, AND Reflections AND curating for CineTV and Ecency! Oh, and sorry I missed your Ecency boost last week. If that happens again feel free to shout me. I wish I could be in all the places I want to be at the same time!
That's a lovely reflection photo! ♥️

No problem. You guys have always been on point, gotta expect some strikes here and there.

If there are a lot of boosts I sometimes run out of voting power, especially if I'm the only curator around. Everyone was busy over Easter week.

@melinda010100, do you take sulfurous, MSM, Astaxanthin, b12, d3, k2? Please, forgive me if I am too intrusive by asking. ...you are the 3rd person in Hive that I know with MS. The 1st one is a dear friend from Empire Kred that called me to Hive. ...I am so sorry...I am going in and out to the clinics and they still don't know if I am about to have MS or not...I am so sorry...I am sending you a warm hug and force, strength!

Yes to all of the above. I also take OPC. I was diagnosed with MS 20 years ago and over the years it has gotten progressively worse.

I'll look for OPC. I am afraid I might have it but the doctors in my country are not that competent..Time will tell. I have huge pains in my arms and legs that are not justified even after brain RMN.
Ok, Melinda... thank you so much for replying to me.
My arms are opened and my soul is too. I am sending you love and appreciation for what you do here in Hive and how much effort you put in.

Good luck to you! I have never had pain, just numbness and occasional muscle spasm. Lack of response from my brain to my hands and legs has been my biggest battle. I hope whatever is going on with you is fixable.

Numbness is daily before the pain appears.
Thank you so much, Melinda.
Be strong. I will be too!

Back when I used to work for a living I was topping up the oil on a large diesel generator and a set of rings failed. Unlucky for me I ended up with a face full of hot oil and exhaust as a consequence I was blinded for a whole week until the ship got me ashore to a doctor. Looking back, no pun intended it was one of the most frightening experiences of my life and if I had to lose one it certainly wouldn't be my sight.

Sounds pretty bad...Which sense would it be though?

@diveratt. Were you just servicing a generator for someone else or was electricity your forte?

used to be a Marine engineer on tankers

Hello everybody.

A difficult question and a more difficult choice. Sight, sound or touch. The truth is that my being doesn't want to choose, because all three are important.

Just imagining not being able to see the face of the loved one, not being able to see the green of the trees and the beautiful clouds resting on the mountain, is something that my brain does not process. Sight is a magical gift, which gives us the entrance to a beautiful world full of colors, shapes and dimensions.

Listening to the voice of the one I love makes all my cells vibrate with happiness, it is a magical frequency and that wave that comes through my ears fills me with joy, how can I willingly give it up? Having the possibility to listen to "Entre dos Aguas" by Paco de Luccia, is priceless, that rumba accelerates my heart, certainly it is still difficult to renounce to this sense as well.

And touch, magical, sublime, silent communication where every fiber of our being is conjugated with the other, just imagine making love, without having the sense of touch, it loses all sense. And then why, if I don't feel? To shake a friendly hand, to feel the warmth of a sincere embrace... ufff How to give up of my own free will.

At this moment I declare myself incapable of renouncing any of these three senses. So to be able to give an answer, the only thing I can say is that I am totally subject to the designs of my creator.

Hello happy weekend...

I hope you have a happy Sunday, today I woke up and when I looked out the window, I saw blue sky with few clouds, I felt the cold morning breeze but also the warm touch of the sun's rays, I heard in the distance the birds singing but also the noise of my neighbors moving dishes. And then I go to the kitchen to brew the coffee and I feel its aroma waking me up and its taste that makes me sigh and give thanks for all my senses to have and to be able to perceive everything around me.

It is true, the senses put us in contact with reality, with them. We perceive everything whether it is present or remembered or imagined stimuli.... Our brain keeps in memory every sensation that allows us to live again the moment.

To be left without a sense would be a terrible loss, I don't know which one is so important to you. However, I experience the loss of one of them.

Since I was very young, I have had the need to have glasses... To be able to modify my sight and focus it from far and near, it has been a quick adaptation because the glasses are miraculous. Without them, I see only moving spots. With them, I see life in motion.

If I lose my glasses, at home, I can get around because I know the place, I would lose some details. If I am on the street, I would be standing on a corner, feeling my way, afraid of falling...

Vision is an indispensable sense... They all are... However, our brain is able to adapt easily if one of them is missing. As a teacher, I have had to deal with blind, deaf and speechless children. And they overcome every situation, learn other ways of perceiving the world and communicating...

Our brain is a marvelous machine....

Nice logic. Twisted but understandable and I think I'm with you. Lose all three would probably be better than having to choose one.

This is always a tough one. I've never been able to answer it. I don't wanna jynx myself and wake up one morning like 'I knew I shouldn't have said that!'

How you doin man? Did I miss any clicks in that? Got any plans this weekend?

That's three question marks... set... GO!

Losing all three simultaneously huh? I think if anyone could make that work it'd be you!

!ENGAGE 25

That's forward-thinking indeed!

Touch is one that some could get away without, I'm not sure if I could though.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Damn! That's intense lol I think you'd be able to reach a monk-like ZEN state FOR SURE if you lost all 3! Hello enlightenment!! lol

Hahaha that's crazy. Whereabouts are you located? Pretty rural I'm guessing

You know what though I'd probably trade my city life for a mountain life like that pretty quick lol! I'm a pretty avid outdoorsman, so all my hobbies consist of being out in the bush. Yet life always drags me back to civilization but I've always wondered what it'd be like to just live out there ya know? :)

ɹɐǝʎ llɐ pǝuɹɐǝl ǝʌ,I ʞɔᴉɹʇ ʇsǝlooƆ

Now that would be one hell of a crazy situation to be on! I can't imagine you would live long with that hahaha. Can't see, hear or feel the food, water or other things to keep you alive. I guess just take a bunch of drugs and enjoy it!

Thanks for the great flashback your post just gave me. I posted that video cuz it was one of my faves growing up with a drunken bar fly mother, so I spent many hours with my fingers on the paddles of a Bally Table Pinball Machine, and was quite good at it. You Made this old KrazzyTrukker smile even tho I am feeling kinda shitty right now.!
